BioWare are frauds and they pulled the scam of the year. If you don't understand why I'm saying it, watch and read all the marketing related stuff from EA and tally against how many of them have been fulfilled.
Piss poor pathetic broken incomplete piece of garbage released by BioWare followed by running away while tucking their tails between their legs.

This is a joke. Im never buying EA game again. This is a boycott now. Promising so much, and lying. Just learn from Schrier article the way it was created.

Matchmaking seems to pair you up with players when you would rather play alone and fails to find any players to help you when you would like some help from a squad. The difficulty varies from stupidly easy (in main quest missions) to stupidly hard (if you begin the wrong side mission) The worst part of this difficulty discrepancy is that the enemies you are facing all look alike. I didn't get any enjoyment out of finding new loot or defeating tough enemies. The whole experience was joyless. Expand

So glad I didn't buy it, but played it with a friend first.
It looks great and all, but man, this is more a messed up demo than a real game

Anthem is a online first person looter shooter.

Graphics: Average. Exactly what one would expect in a triple A game in 2020.

    Audio: Average. See graphics.

Maps: Average. Can be repetitive at times.

User Interface: No mini map therefore difficult to maintain situational awareness. There is a compass ring but it is inadequate.

Character Creation: Poor. Very Basic. Race and Gender have no effect in game outside of appearance. Character has very little back story. Dialog choices do not seem different.

    Inventory management: Average but functional.

    Economy: There isn't one.

    Social: Poor, no world chat

Weapons: Very Good. Lots of different types of weapons but some seemed designed for a very special set of narrow circumstances. Aim point on weapon's sights are difficult to see.

    Crafting: Very basic.

Tactics: Run, and gun, rinse repeat.

Enemy Tactics: Poor and simplistic. Endless waves of the same enemy (which can appear from anywhere) who have no regard for there own lives.

Coop/Matchmaking: Easy to find a group, but social aspects are minimal.

Writing/Voice Acting: Falls above Destiny 2 but below Star War The Old Republic. Voice acting is good. Writing is average.

Technical Issues: None that I could see.

Game play: Gun play is fun. I got flying down but swimming I could never get the hang of. Game needs an up and down keybinding.

Reputations system: Not a revolutionary system but it works.

Bottom line: Game is fun and the loot system is OK until you get to the end game. At that point it seems rather pointless. Game needs some serious work, will reevaluate upon the release of version 2.0. Evaluated version was 1.7

This game is in its second year of release and they STILL haven't fixed something as essential as using Raw mouse input so if you move the mouse slowly the input doesn't get registered in-game.

Reminds you every second that you can be bothered to play that it's a bad console port.

Worst optimization ever. It's just a scam on PC. Stuttering with low graphics settings in I7 7800x, 32GB ram, 2070, SSD 4GB/s. So have in mind, that you have only 24 hours to refund the game if you want to give it a try.

In 2019 the game had a rough launch. You can educate yourself and learn about the hell the developers were forced to go through making this game, blame EA, if anybody. It had a lot of bugs and the developers were forced to rush a launch after months of crunch hours. It's not that they didn't care, they were burnt out against their will. Many had to take months of leave due to mental health issues.

Throughout 2019 many issues were addressed, but to many gamers, it was too late. Many Mass Effect fanboys were also butthurt that the development of this game "ruined" Andromeda. Gamers are some of the most entitled, spoiled people you will meet. Some even harass and make death threats towards developers over a video game(which are basically modern toys) not being to their liking. Absolutely pathetic.

2020 saw more bug fixes, QOL improvements, and a promise of a rework that wasn't necessary. Unfortunately, COVID-19 happened making game dev's jobs even harder and by 2021 EA saw the rework as too much of an investment.

As of right now, this game is a lot of fun. Most of the content planned for the game wasn't launched. A rework wasn't necessary, it just needed more content. There were a total of 9 strongholds planned and at least 3 cataclysms. Had these been released, the game would be significantly better. The player base isn't very large but there are a decent number of dedicated fans still playing and new players constantly checking it out thanks to being part of EA Play.

Bioware could easily breathe life into this game without a full rework. They would need to just launch the planned content. Add the additional strongholds and cataclysms. Add a few more story missions for the 3 factions. Add a few more varieties of scenarios for world events and contracts. A few more weapons(especially melee) would be appreciated and an increase in the level cap to 40 would also be welcomed(and maybe a GM4 difficulty to go with the power increase). It's not something they can fix overnight, but it doesn't require a full redesign of the game.

I'm not a veteran Anthem player, I've only got almost 200 hours invested, but I haven't completely given up hope on this game or IP. The gameplay is a lot of fun and the lore(if you dive deeper into it in game) is actually pretty interesting. Maybe as more people try it out, more people will realize that it's actually a fun game and EA/Bioware will see there is still something to salvage and money to be made(because we all know that's all they care about). If they roll out some more content, more people will come back.

If you haven't played it yet, don't be a sheep. Play it yourself and be the judge. Don't let other people do the thinking for you. If I hadn't tried it myself I would have missed out on what quickly became one of my favorite modern games.

Now that I have a mighty Gigabyte RTX 3080 Ti Gaming OC, I loaded Anthem.

The game is beautiful (in most areas) especially the beginning waterfall and flying a javelin over it is a dream. Love the roaring burning sound of the javelin too.

The sad thing is the game stutters a lot, mostly its 60fps but in some areas it dips under 35fps. So I turned HBAO normal and Lightning High but still getting under 45fps in those areas. All else is maximum and DLSS is turned off. DLSS is too sharp and some effects go missing when turned on.

I am surprised for a game that uses only about 6GB or Vram for its Ultra textrures would dip under 35fps.

And only Vsync ON with Scanline sync -140 gives a smooth framerate on my TV. All else fails... I have tried everything I found on reddit. EVERYTHING.

This game engine really sucks. But so far I am having fun playing it as long as it does not dip under 45fps.

EA as usually killing studios has BioWare in their Crosshairs and therefore now they have released the **** game they could. I always knew the hype was too good to be true. The Central Hub is dead and lifeless, character models are standing around seeming to chat but you hear dead silence. DLC isn't going to fix these issues. i give 1 point for the mobility aspect being fun but even that feels awkward when transitioning from flying to shooting etc it breaks the fast-paced feel you get when flying through combat or retreating.

This is essentially a pay to play free to play game, kinda like pubg. i found scant customization off the bat (which was promised recolors at least but NO) Warframe does all the same stuff anthem does BUT ITS FREE. This is another over managed cash grab pet project driven by EAs execs and unfortunately IS NOT EAs point of redemption at all. I am starting to think the execs are preparing for bankruptcy and have no care in the world about the state of the company or its new products because they're gonna get theirs!

The gameplay loop is not for everyone much in the same way Diablo, Destiny, Warframe, Division, etc. has gameplay that isn’t for everyone. I personally enjoy the combat mechanics and don’t find it boring despite being repetitive. The story isn’t Oscar worthy, but the list of games that have that kind of story are very few and far between anyway. The story is decent, but I will say that I’m really liking the world that this game takes place in. It’s very interesting to me. In the end, before you give this game a straight 0 because it’s EA and some Youtuber said it’s bad, give it a shot and be objective. I thought I’d hate this game. I ended up loving it. Once again there are so many people who were ready to jump onto BioWare's next game and rip it to shreds without actually having played it, or knowing much about it.

I will start by saying yes there are issues like bugs, and for many people there are annoying loading times, especially those still using old computers, but BioWare already issued a day 1 patch that began to address many of these issues, and appear to be moving very quickly in response to criticism about the state of the game and any gamer knows these kinds of things are always present at the launch of new games, and are, in most cases, addressed pretty fast so my review will mostly be about the gameplay, story, and core game itself.

First I will start with where Anthem shines,

Combat: The combat is my favorite part of Anthem, it's fast paced, action combat that works fluidly with the flight mechanics, performing combos, dodging things flying at you in the air (or ground and leaping up like Ironman) is extremely fun and well designed. When I first tested the game i was nervous about these mechanics because they were a fair bit more awkward than they are now.

Flight: This is what I was most nervous about with Anthem because when I tested the game earlier on I found the flight mechanics to be nothing short of a nightmare as they were clunky, awkward, and I was literally running into mountains and trees over and over. However, BioWare did an excellent job addressing the flight mechanics between then and launch, as I do not have that problem any longer and flying around the game has been a great deal of fun, again it works fluidly with combat, and has become a much more natural feeling mechanic.

Story: The story is surprisingly good, I won't get too deep into this because I don't want to spoil anything, but I was not hyped for this game (as I really love story driven games, like other BioWare games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect, but also other narrative driven games like the Witcher series, etc) and I did not expect the story for this game to be as good as it turned out to be, in fact if you are a fan of story driven games I think Anthem is worth buying for that alone.

Graphics: Stunning. Literally nothing else to say about them, this game is gorgeous.

Fort Tarsis: This is your personal city in the game, and it changes as you progress through the game, I find the potential in this to be exciting as I love games where the world changes based on what I do in the game.

Customization: This is extremely important to me in online games, and they do not disappoint in Anthem. Customization for your suit is extremely extensive, you can choose literally every piece (torso, hands, legs, helmet, etc) and they provide an extensive dye system where you can even create your own custom colors, as well as different designs (they call them vinyl's) that you can stick onto your suit, you can choose the type of materials you want your suit to be made from (plastic, leather, metal, cloth, with varying texture options as well as wear and tear, etc) I could go on, but it's a lot and I think you would have a great deal of fun with this.

Shop: The cosmetics shop where you can buy emotes, skins, etc is really well done as there are literally NO pay to win options, and you can get everything in the shop for currency you earn in game, and that currency is not hard or grindy to come by so you don't need to spend any money here unless you don't feel like doing missions to get something you really want from there, if you don't have enough coin.

The negative aspects of the game (not including bugs as I said before, because virtually every new game has them) are things like the UI.

User Interface: The UI/User Experience for this game is a bit better than it was during testing, but still pretty bad. This is one of those issues that I hope gets addressed more extensively ASAP. It's not so bad that it doesn't function properly, but it's not very intuitive, there's not even a real proper character sheet unless you go to the Forge to alter/upgrade your suits, and the expedition/mission menu is awkward and clunky. This is my biggest complaint because it is honestly annoying at times, especially when you've spent the last 20 minutes having conversations with all the characters in Fort Tarsis and you want to just jump back into doing missions and playing the game. Having to run back to the forge to be sure you're ready can be kind of annoying.

There are other things I may revisit this review for later but I have to stop procrastinating and get ready for work now. Overall, the game is very fun, well designed, and the things that aren't can and should be addressed so I'm not overly worried about them. I give the game an 8/10 because I genuinely have been enjoying it far much more than I thought I would (I was not hyped for this game much at all) and I have been pleasantly surprised with how good the game turned out to actually be.
