Highly recommended, I have not been this scared while playing a game in a long time, it is definitely not for the faint of heart! For a game that came out in 2014, it looks visually stunning on the highest detail setting, which really helps with improving the atmosphere even further. It can get a bit frustrating at times when you have to repeat progress from the latest save point. It can get a bit frustrating at times when you have to repeat progress from the latest save point. I decided to tune the difficulty down to medium after a while, which made it more enjoyable in this regard. I did not have a problem with the game length, it took me about 14 hours to finish with some optional content done, but not all. This might be a side effect of the medium difficulty. Also, I recommend giving the first two Alien movies a watch because it will make you appreciate all the little details in the game a lot more. Expand

It's not perfect but damn close. Yes there's some repetition, but they could have easily avoided that by making it same length as other games. So, in fact there is no repetition, in comparison with normal (shorter) games.

It rarely felt so realistic to be in a place and to be in danger, the designers really translated the spirit of the original Alien movie excellently into a game mechanic that works! This game is a (terrifying) love letter to any person who prefers the original Alien movie to its also fantastic sequel. Even players who don't usually like horror games will feel compelled to go on and explore the picture-perfect recreation of the dark, low-high-tech sci-fi vision of the 1979's movie, filled with CRT screens, mechanical computers and steam vents.

This is not a shooter, so be prepared to hide, crouch through vents, and peer in horror at your motion detector as the beeping green blip comes closer and closer to you while you try to hold your breath and not make a noise.

The game is difficult, occasionally unfair, and has a checkpoint save system that reminds me of Dark Souls' bonfires. It all works great to build an incredible level of tension and fear, but it will also be frustrating to players who don't want to try something different to modern straightforward shooters with quicksave systems.

Technically, the game is a wonder. Graphics are the best I've ever seen, and they feel very well optimized for PC. Sound is even better. Every mechanical noise will bring you back to the original movie, and the music feels dynamic and oppressive, including some cues from the original movie soundtrack. The surround audio is also brilliant, and it's just as useful as your motion detector when trying to guess where the creature is.

I can't recommend this game highly enough for fans of the first Alien movie, OR fans of horror games. For everyone else, it will probably not be their cup of tea.

This is a must-have game.

Yes, there are some issues, like having to restart the first mission a couple of times till you got the sequence 'wrong' and managed to move on. Watching the alien walk through walls and furniture a few times was amusing … up until it was able to bite my face off through a closed locker.

But regardless of some issues, the support was superb and always pretty quick to get back to you on the forums – in my experience anyway. Origin, Ubisoft and definitely EA could take a leaf out of their book.

I am enough of a man to admit that the ‘poo your pants’ factor got the better of me and I had to drop the difficulty down to easy from the Medbay onwards. But the replayability of the game is clear as I am presently leaving other, newer, titles collecting digital dust as I play my way through on medium. I can only imagine the horror of hard. Yikes!

I cannot recommend this game enough to people. I would also highly recommend getting surround headphones as it makes the experience all the more terrifying as you hear a door open behind you and that SSHHHHHHH as the alien spots you trying to save your game progress. Again, not afraid to say my sphincter has tightened many a time as I try and make a mad dash for a locker or tool cart.

    A truly brilliant experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow! I must say that I'd never expect the creators of Total War to make such a masterpiece in such a genre! Alien Isolation is indeed a true Alien game and it completely surpasses its predecessor in every field! The story is extremely loyal to the original Ridley Scott movie, Alien (1979) starring Sigourney Weaver as Amanda Ripley who turns out to be the very last survivor of the Torrens as go farther in the game! Creative Assembly has undoubtedly succeeded in creating a Survival-Survival-Survival-Horror game!!! It's all about survival! It's true survival! You'll find it reasonably difficult to gather ammunitions. Ammunition is pretty limited (I won't say extremely, because it's still enough to get rid of a good number of the bad-ass androids-in-orange which aren't vulnerable to EMPs!). This is not Dead Space! You most probably will prefer to walk under shadows rather than making a mess around! Everyone, Everything in this game has got keen ears! Shoot a bullet and everyone will come to find you! The Alien on the other hand is a totally different hostile! the most intelligent and the toughest enemy you could ever have is the Alien itself! It can get into the vents above you, in the ceiling and surprise you in a very bad time! It's undefeatable! When spotted you won't be able to move farther than a few meters, it'll get you! Whatever it takes, it'll get you! So creeping slowly on the ground is way safer than running quickly from room to room!
Play it! Save it a lot! Enjoy! Hide! It's all survival! It's all survival!

2:00 AM: It's been a long, long, long time since I played a game that made me scream and curse so loudly that I thought the neighbors would call the police. This game is a masterpiece of suspense and has a soundtrack that amps up the drama exponentially. It should have a warning label when you start it. I'm 47 and fat. I thought I might be having a heart attack at times just knowing the monster was coming for me and I was a sitting duck. Boom, boom. Boom boom. Boom boom.

The expansive space station is meticulously put together. It has a huge amount of polygons in the many models, highly detailed textures, and tremendous lighting and shadow effects. All of which runs at a smooth frame-rate in high detail on my old dual Geforce 470s (in 3D Vision - Oh yeah. It plays well in 3D with a Helix mod patch). I think it runs so well because so much of a level is occluded; it's a result of the narrow passageways on the space station.

As much as I liked it, I have friends who berate it because it's a stealth thriller. You're not going to go running around shooting things and survive long. This is a beautifully told horror film game mash-up and is easily the best game I've played this year. It looks and feels like it's the second chapter in the series. Watch the movie (first one) and then play the game. The mix of early 80s tech and hyper-light-speed travel is surreal.

    Creative Assembly, thank you.

The gameplay may not be for all, it is a survival horror where you are largely unarmed, but it is worth it even if you don't, just to experience this marvel. As an Alien fan, this is a must buy, you must experience this game's environment and meet the xenomorph it portrays, even if only for a short while.

This is the sort of game we as gamers have been missing out on between all the nickel-and-dime AAA carbon copies and half-done indie games, this is how games should be. OK, the genre might be one you hate, and fair enough, but if you yearn for games made by decent folks who care about their work, do not deny yourself at least a try.

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
