Really immersive/atmospheric, true to the films, great graphics and challenging/long gameplay. What more can a Alien fan/gamer ask for?
I recommend playing it after watching the first two movies.

I perceive the dip this causes in the suspense and pacing of the game to be totally intentional by the devs.
By doing this the player's attention span and edginess lowers quite a bit, almost to the point of feeling empowered. This is where the brilliance shines, because just at the moment where you start feeling safe and strong, the game just tears you a new hole, and you can't even be mad about it, because you just blew your old one... If you like the atmosphere of the original film, don't mind investing a lot of time in a game, and dealing with some slow parts in the game, GO AND GET THIS GAME, it is awesome! And people talking about the Alien A.I. being unfair? I call hogwash! I finished the entire game without dying ONCE (my third playthrough) And no, you can't just learn the Alien's patterns, because it doesn't have any scripted patterns, it reacts to YOUR behaviour. AWESOME GAME 10/10!

The best survival horror game I have EVER played.

I thought dead space would be tough to beat but alien isolation manages it! They took the concept of a boss that stalks you thoughout the level (dead space hunter) and made and entire game out of it. I haven't been this terrified since running from nemesis in 1999's resident evil 3. Great gameplay, great story, absolutely stunning

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow! I must say that I'd never expect the creators of Total War to make such a masterpiece in such a genre! Alien Isolation is indeed a true Alien game and it completely surpasses its predecessor in every field! The story is extremely loyal to the original Ridley Scott movie, Alien (1979) starring Sigourney Weaver as Amanda Ripley who turns out to be the very last survivor of the Torrens as go farther in the game! Creative Assembly has undoubtedly succeeded in creating a Survival-Survival-Survival-Horror game!!! It's all about survival! It's true survival! You'll find it reasonably difficult to gather ammunitions. Ammunition is pretty limited (I won't say extremely, because it's still enough to get rid of a good number of the bad-ass androids-in-orange which aren't vulnerable to EMPs!). This is not Dead Space! You most probably will prefer to walk under shadows rather than making a mess around! Everyone, Everything in this game has got keen ears! Shoot a bullet and everyone will come to find you! The Alien on the other hand is a totally different hostile! the most intelligent and the toughest enemy you could ever have is the Alien itself! It can get into the vents above you, in the ceiling and surprise you in a very bad time! It's undefeatable! When spotted you won't be able to move farther than a few meters, it'll get you! Whatever it takes, it'll get you! So creeping slowly on the ground is way safer than running quickly from room to room!
Play it! Save it a lot! Enjoy! Hide! It's all survival! It's all survival!

    Very slow gameplay,

    console single-slot save system,
little no none decision-making for the player.

Totally overhyped by the universe lovers and so. Totally not worth the 20-30$.

E' fatto tutto benissimo, dai comandi all'Alieno. Expand

However I was only able to get 4 or 5 chapters in before I was annoyed into quitting. The game had devolved into one long stealth mission. Which can be good when done right, I loved the Thief and Hitman franchises and the accomplishment of working through your surroundings to accomplish your goals. But in Alien there really wasn't much to DO other than creep from one side of the room to the other to go to the next macguffin. By the time I quit, the opponents were cyborgs and the namesake Alien.

Cyborgs are slow and slow-witted, more an annoyance than a proper enemy. I spent a lot of time sneaking past them, but realized it's just more effective to run past them and get to your objective. They have very uneven levels of intelligence, sometimes you can duck under an open table and they can't find you sitting right in front of them, sometimes you can hide inside of a closet after losing them around several turns and they just b-line straight to your closet, open it up then beat you. Just... so annoying and dumb. So maybe I'll try and take one out? Oh, I unloaded all six shots of this revolver into your face and it didn't matter? That's great. Why do they even give you the pretence of holding a weapon?

Then there's the Alien. Once he joins in, the never-ending stealth mission now has frequent random losses where he appears from nothing and stabs you for instant death. So you end up creeping along very slowly to make less noise which helps a small amount, except now you're moving so slowly he'll just wander over you and kill you because apparently he wants to kill you more than everyone else combined. So it's a slower, more boring death that takes way more time to get to. Despite the hugeness of the station there's never a moment where this #*(@ is more than a room or two away from you. Why is he camping my character specifically? How is he able to always be around me even if he can't find me while sitting under a desk the same room? Do I have some sort of Ripley connection to the monster that makes him so much more interested in me than everyone else? What was I supposed to know to avoid these obnoxious instant lose surprises? Why do all doors open automatically if you're on their half of the room, announcing to the Alien that here you are, please kill me now? How is any of this avoided? How long does it take for him to leave a room when you're hiding in a locker? 5 minutes? 10? He just endlessly keeps pacing back and forth in front of you, prolonging this failed attempt.... ugh.

So between dumb, slow and pointless or dumb, fast, magnetically attracted to your location and instantly game ending, the enemies are not satisfying to work against. Tension gives way to frustration which gives way to annoyance. Plus the game ONLY saves when you specifically go to a save terminal. You will have all your progress rewound to the previous zone if they don't give you a save point in a sensible location before your next alien one shot death. If I had to describe this game in one word, it would be "annoying". Lots of potential, lots of atmosphere, but the game just isn't fun or satisfying to play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Straight Forward. The Xenomorph is my spirit animal. The first movie heralded a new outlook on the scifi genre, as well as for the horror genre. This thing has haunted me since I first experienced Alien as a kid. Everywhere I went at night, in the dark, I was extra silent, in case one lurked in the trees or around the corner. Even, under the bed. In closets. Dark sheds in the daytime.

It scared the piss out me. So much so, that I began to emulate it -short of killing people and using them for food or alive as hosts for my offspring- as a way to know thine enemy.

I've lived among human monsters, hiding in plain sight.

While there are those of you who would avoid predation in the city by keeping your keys in your fists, and only walking among street lamps, I avoided predation by those monsters by moving silently in the darkness embraced. Watching the watchers... and the watched. So, Spirit Guide.

That being said, On to Isolation.

No game or movie since the first has chilled my bones more.

The Ambiance, the music, the well-placed lighting, the all-forgotten temporary morgues... This is the game for which I've long awaited.

The game-play mechanics are simple, yet fit well with the keep-moving-or-die vibe Creative Assembly was aiming to impose upon the player. The same can be said of the crafting system, of which certain other reviews have claimed to be shallow.

It pretty much has to be, in order to keep up with the pace. Once you catch your stride in dodging the primary antagonist without feeling the need to hide in a wall locker for hours on end, and learn what it means to truly be conservative -or liberal- in the use of crafted or existing items, it becomes more of a case of Tom and Jerry, rather than ordinary cat-and-mouse. The fun is in the tricking, dodging, and outsmarting of the Xeno.

If you're good enough, quick enough, and fast enough, a well placed flashbang can be deadly for your enemies. This is Xenomordia, Signing off.

The one thing I don't like are the fixed save points. I know it's to increase the immersion, but I hate losing progress.

One tip: When you switch on the power, it opens doors for the alien to attack you. When you leave it off, the alien sneaks up behind you in the dark. Either way, you're screwed.

The Alien itself is very interesting for a long time (until you learn how it thinks, even though it also learns how you think sometimes) and it's nice that you really get to explore the space station. The visuals are terrific with all the old school, Alien style tech and industrial feel of everything. That carries the game a long way. The story, the background, all of that is excellent.

This game could well have been a clear ten if not for a very few things:
Only two things wrong, really. One is that the game is a bit too linear. You lack the tool for door x, you know you'll come back to door x once you get that tool. Sometimes you can explore other areas and you'll be rewarded with loot (important for survival) but most of the time you follow a path. Sometimes takes a bit out of the exploration. Two is that the game over-extends slightly near the end. It should have stopped a bit before it does. One or two too many twists and turns and in the end you just want to get it over with which is a shame but doesn't severely damage the overall impression of having played an excellent game.

Yes, there are some issues, like having to restart the first mission a couple of times till you got the sequence 'wrong' and managed to move on. Watching the alien walk through walls and furniture a few times was amusing … up until it was able to bite my face off through a closed locker.

But regardless of some issues, the support was superb and always pretty quick to get back to you on the forums – in my experience anyway. Origin, Ubisoft and definitely EA could take a leaf out of their book.

I am enough of a man to admit that the ‘poo your pants’ factor got the better of me and I had to drop the difficulty down to easy from the Medbay onwards. But the replayability of the game is clear as I am presently leaving other, newer, titles collecting digital dust as I play my way through on medium. I can only imagine the horror of hard. Yikes!

I cannot recommend this game enough to people. I would also highly recommend getting surround headphones as it makes the experience all the more terrifying as you hear a door open behind you and that SSHHHHHHH as the alien spots you trying to save your game progress. Again, not afraid to say my sphincter has tightened many a time as I try and make a mad dash for a locker or tool cart.

    A truly brilliant experience.

Most of the story, just like many first-person games, is told by Amanda Ripley's eyes, save for some cutscenes. As the game progresses, you get involved in the mysteries concerning the Sevastopol, its crew and survivors, and Amanda's mother fate. You get anxious and nervous every time you see the alien, but the fear easily goes away once you get the flamethrower. You're going to want to finish the game fast, since there are many long and tedious objectives, but you'll also get nervous and exhilarated when the alien shows up and when other climax scenes occur. The story also serves as an entree to newcomers, and also a reminder for enthusiasts to watch the movies.

Following horror games should follow Alien's example and create an involving atmosphere and a sense of anticipation. The Creative Assembly managed to redeem the franchise in video games and also serves as an example for other games. Alien: Isolation was definitely the biggest surprise of 2014 and will always be an unforgettable experience.

Alienn Isolation, on the other hand, creates awesome tension and great moments of being scared very much like watching a good horror movie. You will be on the edge of your seat i almost every scene/ chapter. However, the game doesn't have a very solid story line throughout and what little substance there is of a story is protracted through a very long game with "additional tasks" added on on the very moment you complete a task. So, my biggest problem with the game is that the main character you play has to solve a single problem in the chapter and when you as the player reach that goal the chapter is stretched out by additional tasks that are contrived to create more game play. so for example if my task is to get a medical kit to bring back to someone its not that I just get through the obstacles and the enemies to get the medical kit and return but that once i get it there I will be presented with one more problem that will turn out to be 10 more problems with getting back to complete the overall goal. This is annoying because when you feel like you are going to reach a point of accomplishment and satisfaction the game is contrived to stretch it out and give you more to do. This wouldn't be a problem if it only happened a couple of times. However, The game uses this design of taking every single task you are presented within the story and fixing some broken computer or powered down generator to get to yet another contrived problem. This is a clear sign that they didn't have much of a story to work with so they tried to take a very simple premise of getting from point A to point B and back to A and stretch it out by making you go to additional points A.1 through A.9 before you even get to point B. Its frustrating because the game is fun otherwise and scary but i wanted a better more thought out story to support the illusion of being in this world and being this character. the game could have been very very short with this story they wrote for it and it felt like they needed it to be longer so they just made every thing you work with turn out to be broken. The other problem I had was one that I'm sure pertains to most 1st person shooter games. when you want to turn your head top look around you seem to move in slow motion. This does't reflect anything IRL at all. If I hear a sound IRL I can look to my left in a fraction of a fraction of a second. So That means in this FPS game you end up dying because the game mechanics are sluggish. Another really irritating part of the game is the confusing design of the ship and the maps... Even after you have the maps and have been through several levels you can be totally lost as to where you are in relation to where you need to go. There's a function that allows for you to see your goal on a map but since you dont know what floor you are on in relation to the goal you can end up lost trying to figure out how to go down or up on the ship. I spent several hours walking around in circles trying to figure out how to get off a level or two and this was not fun. getting lost for an hour is a waste of time that could have been avoided if the maps built to show you the full layout of the ship had clear indications of levels through a vertical standing map as opposed to an overhead view only. I hated this aspect of the game. Lastly, the logic that the Alien's senses are more acute and can find u better than humans can is false. I can be hiding behind a block and the humans instantly address me and shoot at me but the alien is clueless unless hes looking right at me. It does come runnning for sounds and if your anywhere in sight when he hears you then you are dead but other than that its a false premise in the game advice. But I was fine with it once I figured that out. This game is still not up there at the level of The Last Of Us or Tomb Raider reboot but its pretty dam good overall. I just wish the story was better written. Expand

When the survival horror looks doomed, when nobody got a game to call terrifying, when nothing gives a light of hope, there comes Alien Isolation to save the day. Not a game for a n00b who doesnt want to have cold sweat or a challenge in the screen of your pc or console, definelly a great game worth playing and deserves to be in the Alien franchise Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game, is truly outstanding, the mechanics, gameplay, and the atmosphere, overall, it was epic. Let me start a review on the gameplay.

The mechanics are very simple yet sometimes, it's kinda hard but not that hard. The crafting is useful for 'heavy situation' and the movement of the character is smooth.

The story is beautiful also, it gives a nostalgic effect when you watched it's film, the tense, the character, the survival, everything about it. No wonder I got few nightmares when I encounter 'black' creatures like insect or animals. However, the story is so long that you've wasted enough hours to play but if you're a big fan of Alien, you can finish this game in no time.

The graphic is amazing, the aliens, the character, the androids, everything about it. Last..

The creatures... Gosh, the creatures are magnificent, I remember one time when I was kid, I had a huge nightmare about this monster when I grew big and played this game, the nightmare, came back to my life again. Once you encountered this creature, I'm sure you're gonna stay in the lockers, vents, or anything that the creature won't find you and pray that the monster won't eat you, seriously..

This game.... Is truly amazing. I can't find the perfect word for it but I'm sure, you'll enjoy this game but be warned... Don't play this at night, that's all :)

It is important to begin the review by saying that this game is not a dark corridor shooter such as Doom, Quake and similar. Even though developers seemed to aim to provide the similar experience, two important differences stick out. First, you will achieve little or nothing at all in AI by deploying offensive playing only. In another words, you cannot shoot your way out of the problem in this game. And, second there is higher degree of exploration freedom offered to the player, extending their operational area beyond just linear corridor. I picked those two examples of old games because; my perception of AI was that it will be similar experience. As it turns out, AI offers more, although some of the additional game mechanics may not have been done well enough to be considered a value. Before listing the weak part of the game, I would say that game is very true to the original Alien movie, which I think is the other main goal developers try to achieve. First, the environment is incredibly well done and detailed. This makes it very immersive, and invites exploration. Second, the character animations are superb and on level one would expect for game in 2014. Game is something between sandbox and linear action. It is goal driven, which is consistently changing based on the story development, nevertheless, it is still possible to venture outside the forward path and trace back your steps, or just explore area you missed before. Here is where one of the negative aspects of the game comes out. As mentioned before, the environment is incredibly detailed and offers multiple level of exploration. The problem is alien. Yes, this game is about Aliens and their presence is absolutely required, but the issue is that at one point in the game, Alien is constantly above your head, frequently making trips down to the floor to seek and destroy. This means that player will spend a lot of time hiding in the closet. Literally! This off course turns the experience into cat and mouse game, which I think is overbearing and distracting of the wonderful other experiences player, could have had. Devs try to mitigate this by introducing even lower difficulty settings where Alien spends more time dwelling in the sealing, and less on the floor where it directly impacts the player, but the essence still remains the same. What devs could have done instead is create oasis of different experience, such as humanoid opponents without Aliens or different level of challenges. The problem is that the game is not bad by any means; the problem is that at some points, it is very easy to quit playing because the joy diminishes quicker then what new level or task can provide. In the worst case, I have heard and nearly experience myself rage quitting, just because try to replay 20minutes of game over and over, tends to get very annoying, especially since there are more fun alternatives. That being said, and without the obvious Alien “stalker” issue, this could have been game of the year candidate. I really like the lack of offensive ability at most points through the game as well as limited save ability, but as said, the experience of leaving the movie is overtaken by experience of hiding. From my standpoint: Graphics =9 (with sweetfx with very little effort), Map and levels = 9, Game play = 7, Animations and movies = 9, Reparability = 6.

Alien Isolation is a game sequel to the first Alien movie and that is a very important aspect in itself. Wanted to love this game so bad. Love Aliens and all the lore that goes with it and hated the disrespect the Xenomorphs were given in video games that basically made them fast zombies. However, this game goes too far the other way by making the Xenomorph a loud, stomping, unstoppable killing machine that never goes farther then 10 meters away from you. However, the game also makes the Xenomorph a blind idiot that will follow you into a room with no exits but not bother to check each locker or even under each table. As a result you will spend a majority of the game crawling around from one table or locker to another while the Alien stomps around and makes loud noises. You know, like it NEVER did in any of the movies. The Xenomorph also does a great job of taking away any joy you may receive from exploring this awesome spaceship and all the lore it is packed with. For example you will find several computer terminals with email and audio files that provide background information on how the space-station went to hell and how the Xenomorph got there. However, the game doesn't pause when you access a terminal so you have to speed read every thing and then hide in a locker to listen to the audio file. What makes matters worse and why I am writing this negative review is the save system. The games uses a checkpoint system which may result in you having to replay segments of the game for 20-30 mins (depending on how long you have to hide in a locker). I am willing to die in order to explore the space station but not if it results in having waste 30 mins of my life replaying the mission. Every time I had to walk by a computer or a room for the sake of finishing the mission or finding a save point it made me sick. This game has a great story and environment too bad you can't enjoy it because you are either crawling around the floor or hiding in a locker. The best way to enjoy this game is by watching someone else play it on Youtube. Expand

This game makes you crawl like a goddamn worm, in constant fear of being squashed. I was scared to leave the closet I was hiding in, because the monster was somewhere out there. [Dec 2014, p.68]

The Creative Assembly’s game, however, is cooked; left to boil so long it loses all flavor and texture. For 10 hours, Isolation is one of the best horror games ever made, until a second, poorly made game bursts out of its heart.

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
