If you need a simple refuge from overly complicated strategy games and you remember Command & Conquer fondly, 8-Bit Armies is a cool little game for you. [07/2016, p.60]

Petroglyph, the modern maestros of RTS, have created a fun, accessible new entry that is a great way to get into the genre. There isn’t a lot of complexity here but the friendly art style and generous difficulty curve make 8-Bit Armies the perfect RTS for beginners.

One of the best RTS in recent years shows that simplicity is the power. 8-bit Armies commemorates the first Command & Conquer game, features an addictive gameplay and has a great chance to charm the community.

Despite the lack of unit diversity and disappointing multiplayer situation, 8-Bit Armies is a tremendously fun explosive bundle of radiant voxels.

Petroplyph captures the spirit of Command & Conquer almost perfectly. Nonetheless it feels unfinished: 8-Bit-Armies offers only one faction, not a lot of troop types and generally not enough content.

8-Bit Armies minimalistic approach to real-time strategy makes it a good gateway for people wanting to sample the genre, enabling those to get in and instantly pick up the game without worrying about complexity.

After the interesting Grey Goo, Petroglyph delivers an old-school strategy game with a retro look. Don't expect the complexity of the masterpieces you played in the 90's, though: 8-Bit Armies has a poor strategic value and all the matches looks the same.

We can’t remember the last time a game disappointed us so much. Petroglyph are a gifted RTS developer filled with industry veterans, and their last title Grey Goo was superb. 8-Bit Armies though is not.

But is it any fun? The single-player campaign is rather forgettable and just like RTS games of old, there really isn't much strategy required to win. If there were still people playing the game I'd probably recommend it as a decent multiplayer title but alas, there hardly seems to be anyone around. Full Review »
