Dec 3, 2025While Octopath Traveler 0 scratches the JRPG itch in some satisfying ways, I found it often never feels as captivating as the first two games. Our protagonist doesn’t feel as connected to events as the companions for the campaign quests, even with what happened to Wishvale. The heroes from Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 get stronger stories. I miss being able to play around with character builds like I did in past games too. The town building element is fantastic, constant access to all Path Actions is handy, and the eight-character party in battles allows for some fun strategic options. But I do hope the next entry in the series is more like Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 than 0.

Dec 3, 2025Octopath Traveler 0 is a kind of cozy and solid pastime for curling up on the couch during the cold season. But it's certainly not the next big JRPG.

Dec 3, 2025It’s certainly a better alternative to the mobile game that inspired it, but what few new ideas Octopath Traveler 0 has do little to give it its own identity and paint a worrying picture for the series’ future.

Dec 3, 2025When taking its narrative, combat, and town management separately, Octopath Traveler 0 can make for a perfectly enjoyable RPG experience. But when you consider how all of those elements come together to form a whole, the cracks become more explicit. Below the dysfunctional amalgamation of a questionably transposed narrative structure, an unjustifiably large group of characters, and an underused town-management system, there's still RPG gold to be mined.
