Gorgeous art, an excellent soundtrack, a massive epic narrative that actually feels earned thanks to the strength of the writing and characterisation, and an exciting, tactical combat system. Yeah, it is, quite genuinely, an 80+ hour game, but that’s what the Christmas break is for, right?

An unexpected delight, Octopath Traveler 0 isn't just a superbly polished addition to the franchise, it's one of the best RPGs of the year.

Octopath Traveler 0 is, in my opinion as a series fan, the best installment so far. With its gripping plot points, astounding villains, and a litany of gameplay improvements, I’ve been hooked on this game to a major degree. While the town building could have been better, it’s far from bad and just adds to a game that’d be stellar without it. An excellent RPG, through and through.

Octopath Traveler 0 asks you to stick with a 100-hour journey, and it rewards you with the kinds of moments only lengthy RPGs can pull off with its overarching story, an intricate turn-based combat system, and a soundtrack that'll leave you absolutely floored.

Octopath Traveler 0 is one of this year’s best RPGs in a banner year for the genre. It’s also weirdly not an adventure for the faint of heart as it’s one of its grimmest ( and I include the likes of Silent Hill f in that appraisal) and could do with a massive trigger warning at the opening. However, despite the dire circumstances our heroes often find themselves in, there’s still a lot of hope in Octopath Traveler 0. Its themes of community and people uniting to build a welcoming home for anyone who wants to live there are admirable. In a time where the rich and powerful are urging the rest of us to shut others out, it’s a message that’s needed more than ever.

Octopath Traveler 0 might be a rebuild of a gacha game, but it's a fun, engaging and excellent stand-alone JRPG. There's no trace of the microtransactions and monetization, and what remains is a game that captures much of what makes the Octopath franchise so beloved. I expected something half-baked and got what might be my favorite entry in the franchise to date, and it's a title that I'd consider to be a must-play for fans of turn-based RPGs.

I truly thought I was done with the world of Octopath Traveler after the second one, but this prequel blew me away with how it brought an excellent mobile-only story to the forefront and leveled up the combat, exploration, and structure of this RPG series into something far better than what came before. I have a few small issues, whether it’s the late stages of the town building questline or the lack of class changing for all characters, but those are ultimately small potatoes to the successes that echo throughout the world of Orsterra in Octopath Traveler 0. The eight-player combat rules, the vignette-esque storylines are fascinating, and the overall world building is top notch. This is one of the best traditional turn-based RPGs I have played in ages and it makes me excited for what might be next from the folks involved with this excellent adventure.

In many ways, Octopath Traveler 0 feels like a ‘victory lap’ for the beloved series, remixing various elements that you’re familiar with from the past games while introducing some interesting new ones to spice things up a bit. Importantly, this prequel does not feel like a proper Octopath Traveler 3, but that doesn’t mean that it isn't still an incredibly good time and a much better JRPG than most genre peers…Even if it's a retread in some ways, though, an absolutely monstrous amount of content, interesting new gameplay elements, gorgeous visuals, and compelling storytelling all come together to make Octopath Traveler 0 a must-buy.

Octopath Traveler 0 isn't a flawless game; there are moments where the pace dips, but overall, its strengths balance this out quite well. If you enjoy turn-based JRPGs, especially if you've enjoyed other games in the series, this adventure is definitely worth checking out for its music, story progression, and pixel graphics.

Octopath Traveler 0 presents itself as a game that, despite originating from a mobile game and forgoing certain key aspects of the franchise, manages to deliver a solid experience, with a unique narrative that stands on its own and gameplay that, although somewhat limited, retains the essence that defines the series.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a fascinatingly unique RPG, taking the skeleton of a free-to-play mobile RPG and adding enough substance through a detailed town-building feature and deep party and skill customisation to make it the most mechanically engaging Octopath Traveler game yet. While the plot isn’t the most compelling, it was good enough for me to want to see where each arc was leading. Whether you’re an Octopath Traveler fan or a series newbie, Octopath Traveler 0 manages the balancing act of being a great jumping-on point while also providing enough fan service that just about any RPG fan will have a great time with it.

Octopath Traveler 0 is much, much more than a simple remake of a mobile game. It uses that as a base, but still feels like a full fledged RPG in its own right. It’s a different take on a lot of Octopath’s usual systems and tropes, and feels incredibly refreshing in that respect. Its plot can flounder at the start and middle chapters, but can be enthralling once it finally gets going. The battle system is just as fun as ever, being bigger and yet more restrictive in a very interesting way. Whether you’re after revenge or restoration, there’s fun to be had in either path.

We travel back to the continent of Orsterra in Octopath Traveler 0, but the franchise doesn’t just return to its old ways and slap a new number on it. 0 is full of new features, companions, and collectibles to find, making for a gameplay experience that truly pushes the series in a new and exciting direction—and it's all done against a gorgeous backdrop that will have you hooked for hours to come.

The town-building arc new to 0 resonates because you're renovating an idyllic town you see being reduced to ash and rubble in the game's opening hour. [Issue#419, p.121]

Zero perhaps repeats its formula a little too often and stretches the storyline beyond its merit. For lovers of JRPGs, however, this prequel/sequel/whatever will do a number on you if you give it time.

Overall, Octopath Traveler 0 is a worthy prequel to the first two games, and the new town-building setup is an engaging addition to an already very solid role-playing game.

Octopath Traveler 0, despite its conservatism, once again provides a magnificent lesson in how to unite the past and present of the genre. A superb JRPG, with significant new features within its own series, but whose lack of translation poses a huge barrier to users.

Octopath Traveler 0 reinvents the series with an exceptional combat system, memorable villains, and a deeply strategic structure. The created protagonist, the rebuilding of Wishvale, and the Mastery Skills inject welcome freshness, although uneven pacing, simplified Path Actions, and an inconsistent narrative hold it back. Even so, it remains an ambitious JRPG that shines brilliantly at its best.

Octopath Traveler 0 is another excellent RPG in this new-era classic franchise. But while there's an awful lot to love here, this entry also shaves off some of the unique identity that Octopath has carved for itself. Tell me this is Final Fantasy, and I'd believe you.

Octopath Traveler 0 blends a stronger story with revamped combat that utilizes a team of eight characters. It combines a rewritten gacha plot with an original story arc, resulting in an intense, varied, and well-crafted experience.

Octopath 0 maintains the series’ gorgeous pixel-art aesthetic, while its adapted and evolved take on Champions of the Continent’s gameplay ensures that it feels like a worthy console release.

Yes, Octopath Traveler 0 can feel a bit bloated at times, but it’s also the best thematic use of the series to date of the “anthology” style of storytelling, all held together by deliciously dark villains and an uplifting core message. More than anything, it’s astounding how ambitious this game is in terms of transforming a mobile experience into a single-player RPG — on a level that we’ve quite honestly never seen in video games before. It’s experimental and messy in many ways, but so much more compelling because of that exact reason...In a world where mobile games end service and ultimately disappear from history, I genuinely hope this is a blueprint both Square Enix and others can continue to use. But in the meantime, I can at least say Octopath is on the right track.

Despite its quirks and oddities, I think Octopath Traveler 0 is a worthy entry in the series. It’s genuinely impressive to take the bones of a mobile game and turn them into such a beefy, console experience. If you played this without ever knowing anything about the game it was based on, you likely wouldn’t even be able to tell. All of the strengths and weaknesses of the series come together to make for a fascinating experiment, and one that works more than it doesn’t. I genuinely recommend it if you’re looking for an interesting and long RPG to dedicate your winter to. More Octopath Traveler is always a good thing, and this particular game makes a strong case for Square Enix to give their mobile game teams the chance to make full-on console games again. I’m glad that the core story of that game was able to be preserved, and I hope Square Enix considers another one of these conversions of its catalog of mobile games.

This is how it feels to play Octopath Traveler 0: a seemingly endless pattern of ever-deeper combat challenges and strategic wrinkles, slowly revealing themselves to you over and over through dozens of hours. I've seen credits, in a sense, but there's still so much more to do and explore. It feels like a game that could go on forever. I just might let it.

It's honestly a shame that the story quality takes such a dip compared to previous games and can't complement the combat improvements. This is a game that trades in eight captivating character arcs for one mediocre one, and quality-of-life improvements like "The Story So Far" recaps at the start of each chapter can only help so much. There are very few exceptions in this game where you feel like a companion Traveler character has a satisfying storyline, but the rest of them feel faceless and interchangeable. Honestly, this series deserves better than that, especially given how much I enjoyed the game's town-building component. It's one step forward, one step back for Octopath Traveler 0. Or maybe that's eight steps forward and eight steps back? Really, who's counting?

Although retreading a familiar nostalgic path, Octopath Traveler 0 improves its JRPG formula, while also being an enhanced and unabridged adaptation of the series' mobile spin-off without the grubby monetization. The cast may not have the same limelight as the original (flawed) premise intended but they still shine in turn-based battles that are among the genre's finest.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a slightly different approach to the series, especially since it’s made up of readjusted elements from the Champions of the Continent mobile game. Despite the inflated cast, the main characters are likable, and smart changes to the core battle system and the town-building aspect differentiate Octopath Traveler 0 from its predecessors. It's got a solid story and combat that puts a captivating twist on the classic turn-based formula. With a staggering amount of content, Octopath Traveler 0 will keep you entertained for dozens of hours.

Octopath Traveler 0 is as much Final Fantasy from the past as it is something new that sharpens and tweaks a familiar concept with fresh features. This is new old-school in all the right ways.

Octopath Traveler 0 gives the series a different twist with its blend of classic JRPG and the reconstruction of Wishvale. It doesn’t reach the scale of the main entries, but it offers a fresh, distinctive experience full of personality that works far better than its mobile origins might suggest.

Octopath Traveler 0's boldness in changing up the formula should be commended, even if some of those changes can feel like a step backward, especially when it comes to the characters and writing. Still, this game is proof that with a powerful soundtrack and an innovative combat system that has you making interesting decisions at every turn, you can be forgiven for just about anything.

Despite some frustrations, it’s hard to deny that Octopath Traveler 0 is yet another successful and enjoyable entry in the series. It’s fantastic that the excellent story content previously locked behind a mobile game is more available and even improved, and new additions to an already wonderful combat system make it a joy to play.

A great old-school RPG, long, enduring, and with interesting new gameplay features, although greatly hampered by the lack of a Spanish translation. If you are not fluent in English, better think it twice, because the level required is quite high.

A step forward and a step back: that, in essence, is Octopath Traveler 0, a work by Acquire and Square Enix that presents itself as a sweeping tribute to the medieval fantasy tradition and that—miraculously—manages to turn what was once a mobile gacha title into a fully fledged JRPG. With an extraordinary wealth of content—over seventy hours of story campaigns and more than thirty playable characters—it opens a window onto the series’ past while offering an ideal point of entry for absolute newcomers. Yet it continues to suffer—partly for reasons of age alone—from several of the very issues that affected the original instalment. This is a colossal adventure that excels in many of the genre’s essential elements, particularly on the artistic front, and yet there is no facet of the experience that does not cast a faint shadow, from the narrative presentation to the ensemble cast, all the way to certain anachronistic systems. In short, it is Octopath Traveler in its near-purest form—but rather than looking ahead, it opts to keep its roots firmly planted in the past.

While Octopath Traveler 0 scratches the JRPG itch in some satisfying ways, I found it often never feels as captivating as the first two games. Our protagonist doesn’t feel as connected to events as the companions for the campaign quests, even with what happened to Wishvale. The heroes from Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 get stronger stories. I miss being able to play around with character builds like I did in past games too. The town building element is fantastic, constant access to all Path Actions is handy, and the eight-character party in battles allows for some fun strategic options. But I do hope the next entry in the series is more like Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 than 0.

Octopath Traveler 0 is a kind of cozy and solid pastime for curling up on the couch during the cold season. But it's certainly not the next big JRPG.
  37. 60
It’s certainly a better alternative to the mobile game that inspired it, but what few new ideas Octopath Traveler 0 has do little to give it its own identity and paint a worrying picture for the series’ future.

When taking its narrative, combat, and town management separately, Octopath Traveler 0 can make for a perfectly enjoyable RPG experience. But when you consider how all of those elements come together to form a whole, the cracks become more explicit. Below the dysfunctional amalgamation of a questionably transposed narrative structure, an unjustifiably large group of characters, and an underused town-management system, there's still RPG gold to be mined.
