Replayed OoT recently. It's amazing how the game can feel fresh, despite today's tech standards. This is, for me, the most optimized "Zelda Formula" experience, and I'm sure I'll replay this, again. And maybe again.

While I would ultimately recommend playing the remaster on the 3DS, I think it's important to acknowledge just how much of a beloved and irreproachable good game this is.

At the time of reading this, it's currently the highest rated game of all time here on metacritic. I don't think that's likely to change in the foreseeable future; and for good reason. No other game earns a 10/10 as easily as this does.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ocarina of Time is acclaimed to a level that few other titles are. Years after it's original release, it still holds up. Every quest, every village, every dungeon is an adventure in itself. Locations such as Lon Lon Ranch and Kakariko village are some of the most memorable in any video game; due to their distinct inhabitants, and memorable music. There are tedious sections, like the infamous Water Temple, and the escape from Gerudo Fortress, which do impede on the experience somewhat. Despite this, OoT remains an incredibly entertaining game, and one that will likely remain one as long as video games exist. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. personally i enjoyed the game it is a fun game of progression and knowing Zelda is stuck in her castle is always a motivation throughout the game that really makes you forget it is just a game. but it does have its flaws. half of the puzzles are easy along with the combat but there certainly are difficult parts but some of the difficult parts are either tedious or just out right annoying (water temple). And while this part I'm about to mention gets better when you become an adult but it is still a flaw of the game, all i can remember from the part of the game where you are a child is side strafing and rolling across Hyrule field because there was nothing to do in Hyrule field. It just felt like an empty space made to make the game feel bigger.

Now don't get me wrong this game is still great but it is just little bit nostalgia based fun.

Another thing is that, since the game is so linear once you've played trough it, you will most likely not play it again any time soon since aside from some tricky side quests you will most likely have done pretty much everything. But even though it has some problems the game is a blast to play trough (save some boring sections) and since a normal playtrough can take months, by the time you finish you will most likely want to replay it! So do you get it? Yes, definitely. But keep in mind that even though the game is great its still a N64 game so dont expect 4k or HD.

Navi is a little annoying piece of garbage and I was happy when she left. You get Epona way too late, being a child without her is too tedious. Saria was also annoying. Overworld progression is way too obtuse. Who would think to feed a fish to Jabu-Jabu or play Saria's song to Darunia? And the Song of Storms on that tree for the golden skulltula? Despite with almost no voice acting the story is showed by text like the previous entry in the series and with the use of body expression or even a little bit of face expression does help the story. The story is your usual save the princess with a few problems in narrative along the way. The character models look blo-cky while others look amazing especially the bosses. The draw distance is a huge improvement over Body Harvest the game that came out a mere two months earlier. The scope of the game may not be bigger than Body Harvest but it sure is more detailed. The mix of puzzle solving in the dungeons with a tight sword combat system helps the game to be more fun. You can only jump automatically but it barely gives a problem while also the camera is better than Super Mario 64 overall by staying behind the silent protagonist then the camera does zoom in to much, when you lock on an enemy. Not letting you see the edges of a cliff for example, another small problem is since you don't have a horse at first you will be walking a lot in which might bother a few players but not a real flaw. The Soundtrack is fantastic and still holds up even today also the game adds items to collect, rewards, secret areas, power ups, magic, the use of an arrow in first person view and it truly shows the effort being put in the game when you see the enemy being variant that makes the world even more alive. The reason I don't consider this game a total masterpiece is because of the water temple making you use the menu way too many times for just changing your boots and that you need to go back to a shop if you don't have any arrows for example making you spend more time than it should. Even on some platforms it does feel like you are waiting a bit but overall this game is amazing it deserves to be loved. Expand

OoT revolutionized the entire gaming industry and I can happily say I was there when it happened. For those who haven't played it, I'd say don't. Wait until the remaster comes out (if it ever does). No matter how awesome a game was back in '99, it most likely will not meet your expectations after reading all of these reviews - unless you have a penchant for old games. However, if Nintendo does a remaster, make sure you are first in line for it!

From story, to puzzles, to dungeons, to music, this game had it all. It gave all of us a look at where the gaming industry could go and I am thankful I had the opportunity to be in the right place at the right time!

Ocarina of Time is quite possibly the greatest game ever made. The gameplay, particularly revolutionary for its time, still holds up today. The story tells the grand adventure, that although told many a time through various media, continues to be used to this day. The matter of fact is: Ocarina set forth many of the trends that are still present in video games today. It is a masterpiece that most certainly lives up to the hype.

Ocarina of Time is considered by many to be the greatest video game ever made. I first played this title over 15 years after it came out. It was not my first Zelda game, nor did I grow up playing this game. Thus, I had zero nostalgia for this game and nothing but high expectations from repeatedly being told that this was the peak gaming experience of all time.

The story, feels familiar and follows the basic Zelda formula (hero learns of danger to the world, does some dungeons, something drastic changes in the world, Zelda is a captured by Gannon, hero frees her, etc.) however at this point said formula was still new. There is just enough story to keep the player invested in the world and its characters, but so much that it becomes the focus of this game. Instead the game chooses to be about adventure and exploration, a goal it accomplishes masterfully in a variety of ways.

First, the game’s level design is fantastic. Each dungeon has a unique theme and even those with similar themes (i.e. The Great Deku Tree and Forest Temple) have vastly different mechanics that makes each dungeon a unique experience. The puzzles are clever, but not stupid, and the Ocarina is a fantastic tool to solve such puzzles. The bosses for the most part are fun (a few seem like item sponges). The character encountered in each of the game’s areas feel relatable and the world feels alive (except when its not supposed to).

The music in this game is superb and the music also conveys important information to the player such as when to prepare for danger and when certain enemies are in the area.

The exploration in this game also feels fantastic. Although Hyrule field pales in comparison to many modern open worlds, it was not only revolutionary for the time, but is still fun to explore. The world and each dungeon is full of hidden secrets that give Link optional upgrades to his gear, health bar, etc. The game rewards exploration, but does not require the player to run around the world interacting with everything until they are able to move on.

The combat was also not only revolutionary but is still present in many of today’s games. Dark Souls and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey borrow Ocarina’s Z-targeting lock on combat system that made combat in three dimensions satisfying to participate in.

Overall, Ocarina is a masterpiece that was not only revolutionary for its time, but still holds up to this day as one of the greatest games of all time. It is a must play for anyone who enjoys video games at all. It might not be your favorite game, but it will most definitely be worth your time.

This game may have been revolutionary when it came out, but nowadays it doesn't hold up that much
Traversing through the oversized and empty overworld is the most annoying thing ever without Epona, instances where looking up a walkthrough is probably the only way you'll figure out what to do (like the Hookshot side quest in Kakariko and that one temple everyone hates) and other antiquated

It's definitely not an awful game by any stretch but some things done in this game have been done better in other Zelda games. (My favorite thing is of course is the soundtrack, definitely one of the game's saving graces.)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will not disagree with you that Ocarina of Time (Oot) is one of the most influential games ever mad. Is it an amazing game? Yes. Is it extremely fun? Absolutely. But is it perfect? Hell. No.

Oot came out 20 years ago, and yet there are many things people flat out refuse to admit. The game is repetetive, often seeming like a fetch quest most of the time. The dungeons are under whelming if you ask me. The game often becomes boring at times, and most of it is due to one thing: the story.

The story has a whole ton of potential. It could have been a touching story about a boy growing up too early. What we get is nowhere near that. The story is a halfassed string of coincidences. The pacing is terrible, as the game isn’t about exploring. Instead, its about dungeons. It’s linear as heck, the overworld is a barren husk, and your actions have very little impact on the world around you.

However, the game for the most part is loads of fun. The areas and characters are very memorable. The music is for the most part great, at its worst being boring, and at its best been used in nearly every single Zelda game since.

The best part of Oot is not the game itself, but instead, its impact on gaming. An aspect from your favorite games, if it came out 1999 onward, was likely started in Oot.

It is a phenomanal game, but not the greatest game of all time. I love this game, but it would not be warrented any higher than a 7. I can’t do that. Great game with several flaws
