With a touch of endless runner, a dash of MMO, and just a sprinkling of puzzles, Sky: Children of the Light soars to lofty heights.

Ultimately, it’s a game best experienced for yourself, and we recommend it to literally every single person who owns an iOS device. Sky is a breathtaking, heartwarming, and incredibly rewarding experience.

Sky: Children of the Light is the latest effort from Thatgamecompany, who succeeded in creating a game that feels both like a spiritual successor to Journey and like something completely new.

The successor to beloved Journey is larger and more courageous. Sky is innovative, magical, boasting a unique multiplayer system straining to make us courteous and… good. It is simply incomparable to any other mobile game.

Thatgamecompany has created a great game with Sky, having a strong emphasis on discovery and friendship. The game regularly feels like an ode to Journey. The in-app purchases hardly affect this magic, but the bugs and sloppy controls sometimes do.

One of the most sofisticated and imaginative games for mobile platforms, Sky wants to fly high but it's stopped by unsuitable touch controls and an inconsistent framerate.

Sky: Children of the Light is a breathtaking follow-up to thatgamecompany’s previous hit, Journey, that surprised and delighted me from start to finish with its subtle story of exploration and healing. Visually, it’s breathtaking to behold on a mobile device and it delivers one of the most memorable and purely joyous multiplayer experiences I’ve had in recent memory. This is an adventure for anyone and everyone.

Sky expands on the successful gameplay ideas of the developer’s previous games, but with a greater sense of progression, replayability, and a far more involved social component. Conceptually, this new project is a deeply felt meditation on empathy and the connections between people, couched in the same unpretentious and thoughtful presentation we’ve come to expect from the studio. Sky is a refreshingly moving and robust game on the iOS platform, and one best shared with others – especially folks who might not normally pick up a video game.

While using a similar format as 2012’s Journey, developer Thatgamecompany manages to deliver an experience that feels genuinely new by implementing more communication mechanics and adding more diversity in its gameplay. At launch, the more complex package does make Sky feel less refined and not as pure as Journey, but we are excited to see how this online experience evolves from here.

Sky : Children of the Light's composition spreads elegantly both in style, sublime and poetic, as well as in content, through traditional principles, yet harmoniously breathed into it while deeply meaningful to carry such an elevated purpose. Some touchy turbulence overshadow this ideal picture, when ThatGameCompany ventures across down to earth themes, or tends to lose its lantern among the mist created by this ever-evolving universe. Its humble existential, altruistic message stays nonetheless limpid, the economic model expressing rare generosity, like an open hand.

In Sky, knowledge can be a powerful thing, an asset that makes you more useful to those who seem lost, as you lead them toward the light. [Issue#336, p.116]

Sky is both different to everything thatgamecompany has made before but also a smart evolution of what makes its games special. It's simple to play while feeling incredible at the same time, making the act of flight exciting every time your feet leave the ground. It also features a fascinating spin on in-game purchases, locking its most alluring rewards behind the action of making friends and making a positive enough impression on them. That means you have to play a lot of Sky to eventually work towards what you want, which saps some life out of the gorgeous vignettes you're free to explore. But it's no less memorable for the ideas it presents or calming in the way it gives you the freedom to pursue them, making it another journey worth seeing through.

Sky feels like an evolution of Journey: it shares some similarities, but also adds its own personality. They also share that magic, that something unique that you can’t find anywhere else.

Beautiful like a painting and touching just like Journey was, Sky : Children of the Light turns all the previous games from thatgamecompany into a magnificent trip designed for social interactions.

Sky: Children of Light is an emotional adventure, a journey through men’s bounds and life. Interaction with other players is original, deep and functional, but the experience in mobile version is partially stained by a problematic fluidity an inaccurate touch controls.

I would need to grow a few more hands to count how many times I had to stop playing Sky out of frustration. Whether it was the game not allowing me to move off a ledge or sending my character spiraling down the side of a mountain when all I did was slightly touch the digital joystick, the touch controls and often excruciating camera gut what should be an awe-inspiring vision of discovery. I absolutely believe Sky: Children of the Light is a game most everyone should experience because it is blissful, imaginative, and a sight to behold. I just think most everyone should wait for a console or PC release to do so.

I can’t even begin to imagine how Sky was made. It’s ultra-smooth visuals and seamless multiplayer feel like they can’t work on a mobile device, yet they do. This is indeed an achievement, and I cannot deny that. Once I start playing it though, it feels like I’m smearing a painting. Everything is so beautifully composed, and then I come along to fly into a wall or get hung up on a ledge. This happens so frequently that I don’t really like spending time in Sky, which is a real shame.

First, why on Earth do a "sequel" to Journey on mobile with this horrible touch controls? Why not use a controller, as was some so brilliantly done before? But the answer is short and quick: micro transactions. Although console games are becoming more used to this practice, mobile games are quite at home with them, since it was invented in the mobile market. Although with packs going to as much as $50 a piece, there's nothing micro about them. Some dazzling presentation to hide a perfunctory plot and a rotten core of greed to join the "live services" scam Full Review »

A disappointment is an understatement. I wonder what Jenova Chen was thinking, to make something so ordinary, so bland and frustrating, and on top of that to fill it with nasty micro transactions. In sky, you spend most of your time opening big doors, lighting candles, and following blue light. That’s it. This game is a complete mess. It’s like they never figured out what they wanted it to be. It’s a platformer, but a very bad one with horrible controls, it’s a flying game where flying is more or less restricted to a path, it has bits of an rpg where your character can evolve, but systems and UI are so convoluted and clumsy that you never really see what’s the point of it. We are very far from the pure, brilliant minimalistic UI of Journey. And admitting you play as a social experiment, you don’t get anything out of it either. Every encounter with another player allows you to unlock...emotes! Emotes really? The little bonus feature that any decent rpg has. In Sky, gaining emotes like point, clap, or any other, is your reward for playing this disaster of a game. And I won’t mention the lore which feels both pretentious and uninspired, with shaman type characters and ancient temples directly inspired by Zelda and the countless basic rpgs since video games exist.
I really wanted to love this game. I tried hard to find the motivation to play, but after 10 hours I couldn’t keep fighting the miserable controls and the boredom. I really wonder what happened for the creators of Journey to put out such a mediocre experience. I can’t believe the same people that made Flower and Journey spent years to come up with something so bad as Sky.
So if you’re a fan of Journey, or if you’re not for that matter, do yourself a favor and don’t waste your time on this shiny turd.

Journey is one of my all time favorite games. So I was extremely excited to play SKY.

Once I realized I could not stand the game for a few minutes - while playing the beta - I knew something was wrong.

The concept is amazing, magical, beautiful, haunting. And the art, music, all that deep, dreamlike atmosphere thatgamecompany is so good at; it's all there.

But the execution is not good, I'm afraid. It's clunky as hell to play on a small, mobile device. This game should be played in full glory, on a big TV, with all the sound and space it needs. Also, using a controller.

Downloaded SKY and could only play for 10 minutes. Look forward to playing this on consoles, though.
