    Who would have thought that going out on a walk could be so fun. I know many people will be dissappointed because some areas are emptier than others and there is in app purchases, but what do you expect from a free to play game? Its one of the most addicting and fun games i have played in a long time and going for a walk with friends is really fun.     Get mugged. Find real dead bodies. Have your gmail email intercepted. Maybe get hit by a vehicle as you pay more attention to your handheld than your current surroundings. Couldn't have asked for a better game!

    While not without flaws, Pokemon Go has been an excellent experience for me so far. I've gotten out far more than I would have otherwise, and I've met tons of new people! Servers were pretty buggy at launch, and battling was almost impossible on day one, but the improvements have been incredible. Niantic has really done a bang up job!

    Pokemon Go is one of the most fun and addictive games i have ever played. It's a really neat concept for a person to walk around in REAL LIFE to catch some Pokemon and it works well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

    I've seen music websites write re-visited reviews of iconic albums years in the time because they had been mistreated in their time, and maybe this should be done with online services videogames too. If it is the case, Pokémon Go surely deserves it. The server errors have been long gone and the bugs are scarce at this point, in january 2021. The fact that almost five years later the game retains a HUGE playerbase tells you it is, if not a, per se, masterpiece, a tremendous success. The main mechanics have not changed, but the game now has lots of features, including the long-demanded trading and PvP, plus mega evolutions, daily tasks, and discovery missions. Sure, it has microtransactions, but I belive this is a legit monetisation method in free to play games, contrary to in 60-dollar games. Of course in the experience makes an impact the fact that the game has been able to form local communities and anyone who has made new friends while playing it will probably tell you that, despite some milor flaws (I have to mention an inconsistent anti-cheat enforcement) Pokémon Go is already a remarkable and iconic game in the franchise.… Expand

    My grandpa has been dying for the past several years, and he had a bucket list to go to many different places around the world. This changed once I showed him Ipogo and PGsharp. He could visit the beautiful streets of Zaragoza or Seattle, or walk around the middle of the ocean doing nothing, it was everything he ever asked for.     The issues are the servers being down way too often and the app freezing every now and then. But when it's working, it's great. It's bringing people of all ages and all walks of life together for a bit of harmless fun. And it's getting players off their asses in a less awkward way than dance games.

    this game is clearly a remarkable idea. it's not only fun but it brings people together, the fact how a smartphone has now made people kind of an individualistic people who don't care about their surrounding, this game fixes that. what's more fun then goin out with some friends and capture them pokemons?

    This game is fun and addictive. Niantic has mostly fixed the server issues, and new features are scheduled to be rolled out.

    The game is not perfect, but it is enjoyable and fun.

    Such a simple and enginious concept. The only reason it does not receives a 10 is because the problems with servers and crashes. So many people are addicted to this game... It is a true social phenomenon that rarely occurs.

    I grew up with the old / first gen pokemon. I am not a super huge fan of the franchise but I love it enough to know enough. Got a pikachu hat and a talking plushe. Used to be mental on the N64 with poke stadium. However... When I first started PokeGo it was pretty awesome. But now... since after the release and more countries added... EVERYTHING sucks!!! I cant believe something THIS BADLY DESIGNED is out on the market without any word of fixes. I understand the hacks made it difficult. But stop FEKKING putting the game out in other countries because your servers aren't stable yet. This game could be sooooooo much more than it is right now. I am more than frustrated. I am truly angry because I am so let down. And my enthusiasm is a weak point. But for the love of God and everything that is holy. FIX THIS GAME COMPLETELY! AND LET US HEAR FROM YOU!     A companhia tem muito o que melhorar, o jogo tem muito do que melhorar, mas ele esta se esforçando bastante para a melhoria do jogo e conseguindo, o jogo ta mais divertido do que nunca, as RAIDS fazem você procurar pessoas e tu realmente faz amigos novos, e ta tendo eventos mais de uma vez por mês, alem de ser saudável, tem seus defeitos mas cada dia mais esta melhorando.

    With Pokemon Go, you will get both excitement and frustration. Although not without its flaws, this game has immense potential. Unfairly, those with more expensive mobile devices will inevitably have more fun.

Pokemon can be found all over the world but after some testing it seems that Pokemon tend to appear more in public areas especially near PokeStops and Gyms, the more stops and gyms in a given area the more likely Pokemon are to appear. PokeStops will also generate 3-6 random items for users every 30 minutes this includes anything found in the shop except gold, and the loot table seems to heavily favor Pokeballs as around 85% of the drops I received where Pokeballs.

    The most major change is the complete overhaul of the battle mechanics and capturing Pokemon. Turn-based attack selection is no longer present, instead users click on the target to attack and swipe their own Pokemon to dodge. This makes combat much more involved and action oriented than in previous versions. Capturing Pokemon is also much more different instead of first weakening the Pokemon the odds of capturing one are based off of its strength (CP), evolution, timing, accuracy of the thrown, and any tricks added to the toss.

    In-app purchases have also made an appearance, however there don't appear to be any items for purchase that you can't earn in-game. There also aren't any "fast-level" items for sale however the Lure Modules can be a little OP especially when used in a dense area of PokeStops. On the whole however the in-app purchase items have NOT made it Pay to win, good news for all of my fellow cheapskates.

    Score Breakdown

    Innovation: 9/10

    Pokemon in the world is a huge achievement the programming and effort that went into this is astounding. However the implementation does cause some problems on some mobile devices, extended use will drain your battery in very short order, it may cause your device to become uncomfortably hot (+40C on a Samsung Galaxy S4), I also had trouble where my GPS location would shift around 5-10m at a time which was slightly annoying. The VR is also an amazing feature it's really nice to see Pokemon wandering around the world, it would be nice if once caught we could view our Pokemon in VR mode.

    Creativity: 5/10

    The lack of new Pokemon, while nice for the First Gen-ers, does mean that the only "new" addition to the game is Pokeshops. Also the lack of interaction with Pokemon we have already caught is kind of a step back after the most recent 3DS games.

    Technical: 8/10

    For the most part the release is stable and the only issues I had was caused by my device overheating slightly. There are some bugs present in the game (no not the Pokemon type) but none of them seem to be game/phone killers. Most of these bugs and heating issues are expected to be patched out "soon"TM. The menus are a bit laggy and the exit button can overlap with other things making it a bit of an annoyance at times.

    Overall: 8/10

    Overall the changes are rather interesting and add a decent update to the series. However the game is currently lacking some key features that could make it absolutely amazing. Some features we'd like to see: A PokeCenter since currently only items can restore your Pokemon, more interaction with Pokemon (ex. allow us to view them wandering our homes with VR), classic battles as an option for 1v1 battles, trading, and public 1v1, 2v2, etc. battles.    … Expand

    A very enjoyable and fun game. Spent many hours walking around with my spouse catching Pokémon in the park and downtown. Saw many other people doing the same thing, even ran into old friends. The game is very simple and very fun, walked nearly 15 km's so far. Even battled in some gyms. Cons: Can get slightly repetitive with another Zubat, end game is only gym battles.
    Well worth playing.

    The biggest introduction to popular culture this decade and one of the most addicting games ever released on a mobile platform, I've now went and deleted the app because I just didn't have time to play it but that's no criticism of the game itself. Its sense of community is quite unlike anything you'll ever, EVER see. It's pretty good, believe the hype.

    It's a social app with super casual gameplay, I'm enjoying it for that and not expecting some official game experience until Pokemon Sun and Moon come out.

    For version 0.29, this is heading in a great direction and will only get better over time.

    Many reviewers have commented that the game mechanics present a lack of depth, particularly from the perspective of a seasoned gamer. In my opinion, this is a valid point. However, this is counterbalanced by the widespread appeal and positive aspects of the game as set forth above. Pokemon Go presents the familiar challenge to explore and grow in level/strength that has the potential to really motivate players. This is part of what makes this game, like many others, successful. But Pokemon Go is somewhat unique in that I've seen parents and their kids enjoy the game together, and I've observed other individuals, who are generally not inclined to play video games, that just can't seem to put this one down.

    Another criticism reported by some reviewers is that the game is excessively buggy, crashes/freezes with surprising frequency, or doesn't even load at all. I can say from experience that those observations were correct within the first couple of weeks after the game's launch. However, recently, I've noticed vast improvement in this regard. The game has been updated; and for me, it now boots and runs normally. Battery usage on my phone (Android) still does seem a bit high; although on another user's phone (IOS) there doesn't seem to be any battery issues with the game [it is also possible that my battery issues may be due to other variables].

    In sum, Pokemon Go's success speaks for itself -- and it is well deserved. Is it a complex and sophisticated MMO -- no, of course not. However, is it one of the most approachable and fun to play for gamers of all skill levels -- I would say, yes. 8/10.    … Expand

    What a good game... Pokemon go is not just Nintendo trying to please parents by getting their kids outside. Its an amazing AR Pokemon game. The catching system is wonderful! The only downsides i can find are that it only gen 1 (However there is room for improvement here as with a few updates this could include gen 2,3,4,5 endless amounts of updates could come here) and the battling system.What a good game... Pokemon go is not just Nintendo trying to please parents by getting their kids outside. Its an amazing AR Pokemon game. The catching system is wonderful! The only downsides i can find are that it only gen 1 (However there is room for improvement here as with a few updates this could include gen 2,3,4,5 endless amounts of updates could come here) and the battling system.     I mean, it's Pokemon Go. What else is there to say? It's a cultural phenomenon, and there's a reason for that. As an entry point for the world's largest franchise, it does its job exceedingly well. The game has helped my wife and I get into the series as a whole (In my case, getting back into it). Yes, it's a phone game with many of the trappings of phone games. However, it was innovativeI mean, it's Pokemon Go. What else is there to say?     A lot of people are rating this game low because of the glitches that plague it. Usually you don't have a problem, and you can always check before you leave to see if the servers are down. I would rate it a 7, but it has promise and potential. I would rate it a 9 but it needs to deliver first. Overall, the game requires grinding, and I think that's what most people are really upset about.

    Great game that makes walking fun and the microtransactions are not to intense but there are some flaws such as Gen 2 and 3 which is just too many Pokemon.

    A great game which provides a unique method of user engagement and interaction. Wither it's catching Pokemon, competing at a local Gym or teaming up with other people for Raids, Pokemon Go has a lot to offer for veterans and new fans alike! The launch had several connection problems which were reduced, but at times can still occur to disrupt the experience of the game.

    This is one of those games you download and get hooked on. When you get a bit better you just keep playing it. Every morning you start this sucka up and you just catch some mons when you're bored. But the game is 10 times more fun when you have friends to play it with.     I do have one other thing to say about this game tho. It DEFINITELY WASN'T worth playing in 2016-2017. The game felt like it missed so many features and there wasn't really any reason for playing it at all. Just to catch some pokemon felt like a lame reason to play. Now we have trading, a friend system with gifts, a buddy system, raids, an online battle mode. The game just feels so much more finished now and much more worth playing. So reviews from 2016 are pretty much invalid considering how much the game has changed over the years. So I would say when life gets a little boring, and you want something to get hooked on. Just try this game again. Chances are that you played it a few years ago and then dropped it. But the game is just so much better now that it really deserves another shot. But the other day, 3 of my news app's 4 top gaming stories were about Pokemon Go, and a couple of those made the Top Stories section.

    Last week, the game had more active users than Twitter and people spent more time on Pokemon Go than on Facebook. Both presidential candidates have talked about it. There’s already a divide on the Internet about whether the game is a complete time waster (“people finding Pokemon when they should be finding jobs”) or a miracle game that’s pushed more unhealthy people off their couches than anything in recent memory. A friend of mine convinced her manager to let her expense Pokemon lures to attract people to their store. All this despite the fact that the game constantly froze and crashed for the first week of release because the servers were swamped (not just for me but for everyone, if the memes are to be believed). Wow.

    If you don’t know the premise, it’s a GPS-based game. When you boot it up, you’re told to physically walk around trying to catch Pokemon and visit Pokestops, real-world landmarks that give you in-game items like Pokeballs if you’re close enough to them. Bigger landmarks are called “gyms” where you can battle Pokemon that some other player left there. Camping out in front of a gym or Pokestop isn’t going to help you the most though: the Pokemon eggs you collect won’t hatch unless you’ve walked some number of kilometers. Almost every mechanic in the game is designed to get you off your couch.

    As is typical game fare, the goal of the game is to make numbers go up. Get more Pokemon, give those Pokemon higher numbers, level up so you can have a higher number yourself, get medals for having high numbers, etc.

    The mechanics aren’t great. Keeping your Pokemon at a manageable number is tedious since you can have duplicates and you have to release Pokemon you don’t want manually. I’ve stopped walking just to give myself time to sort through my Pokemon. I don’t think that’s in anyone’s best interests.

    Oh and a server call is made every time you release a Pokemon, so if it’s a bad day for the servers then good luck doing that in a reasonable amount of time. In fact, every action in the game requires a network call. Patience is a virtue, and one required to make the most of Pokemon Go.

    But despite all that, people still play this game. I still play this game. Why? Maybe it’s pure nostalgia. It could be that exercising and getting fresh air has never been more enjoyable. Maybe it’s because this is a way for people to socialize with others without getting too far out of their comfort zones.

    Or perhaps it’s nice to believe that there’s a little magic in the world; a Charizard sitting on your table if you only were looking closely.    … Expand

    As an app, it's great. But even the best app isn't as good as an average console/handheld game. With future updates it may be able to expand its lifespan, but this game is to just hold fans of the franchise over until Sun & Moon come out.

    Pokémon Go is a game that has died with time. I feel like it has lost its appeal. In the beginning, everyone was out to 'catch em all,' but that does not seem to be the case anymore. That's a shame, because many of the new content updates have added substantial new content.

    Pokémon Go allows players to capture, battle, train, and trade virtual Pokémon who appear throughout the real world. But the servers are crashed more than I expected, there are a lot of bugs when you are trying to capture a pokémon. I hope Pokémon Company or Nintendo fix them.

    Although it can be really fun, it also can be really buggy. My game has crashed numerous times even when encountering rare or high CP Pokemon. Battles are nothing special and aren't anything like the actual Pokemon games.

    I admit I never had a problem with the second issue because there's a poke stop only 100m away from my house and a poke gym only another 100m after that and my collage has five poke stops in it so I maybe a little bit byest (I wish my luck was used for better things like winning the lotto)

    time of this review the tracking mechanic is glitcted every Pokémon on the tracking list comes up 3 steps no matter how close you are which is annoying it was working on the first week of its launch but now its not working so you have to walk around the area and just hope for the best that you come across it

    however though its fantastic that you can find Pokémon in the real world battle other people Pokémon at the gyms and visit your towns landmarks to get the poke stops and you also learn some info off what its propose is its really cool I may update this review when its crashing problems and the tracking glitch gets fixed (if it gets fixed) if it doesn't I don't see this game being relevant for long    … Expand

    -As you probably know Pokemon is very real-world/map based, so if you live in a city you will be better, have better Pokemon, have better/more materials. This actually doesn't drive me    I'm going to start out by saying that I, as a Pokemon up to the current generation, thoroughly enjoy Pokemon GO. That being said the game has inherent flaws that are bound to drive any Pokemon fan CRAZY.

    -As you probably know Pokemon is very real-world/map based, so if you live in a city you will be better, have better Pokemon, have better/more materials. This actually doesn't drive me crazy despite the fact that I live in the middle of no-where because everyone else who battles at the gyms and such is on a level playing field since they live in a rural area, so you really have no excuse for being bad. What does bother me a tiny bit is that they are kind of putting us people who live in rural areas behind a paywall since there aren't a lot of pokestops in most rural areas.

    -The battle system is all about A: What type of Pokemon you have, and B: Who can tap their screen faster. This isn't the normal turn-by-turn battle system you may be accustomed to, which bothers me a little bit. Easy to get over though because winning gym battles is still extremely satisfying, but even then, if you have a higher leveled Pokemon, you're bound to win, which brings me to my next point the leveling system or CP.

    - CP system works VERY well surprisingly. You have to use stardust and candy to level up a pokemon's CP, while this isn't the normal way you level up Pokemon, I personally think that it's a great compromise because since stardust can't be bought using real money and you have to actually work by catching Pokemon to obtain the candy, it balances it. Also you use candy to evolve Pokemon so there is a choice you have to make when deciding how to allocate your resources occasionally.

    -Some people have varying complaints about Pokemon GO not working with their phone since they don't have a gyroscope, but frankly in 2016, why don't you have a phone with a gyroscope? I haven't owned a phone without a gyroscope since my Samsung Instinct in 2009, and that didn't even run Android so at this point complaining about not having a gyroscope is like complaining about an online game lagging because you have dial-up internet. It's time for you to upgrade.

    -The mechanics and the way the game works work great for the most part. I do, however, have one main gripe. So when there are Pokemon near you it shows you their silhouette and then footprints under it to show how far away the Pokemon is away from you. My issue with this is that the game doesn't give you a direction to walk so it takes way longer then it should to find Pokemon nearby.

    My final verdict on Pokemon GO is a 7/10. You really need to think about it not as a Pokemon game, but as a mobile game with Pokemon in it. It's fun, I enjoy it, but it's very different from anything we've seen Pokemon in. By the way, you also need to remember there have been other non-mainline Pokemon games that have came out over the years that have strayed far from the original Red and Blue games' formula, such as Ranger and Mystery Dungeon. I recommend you give Pokemon Go a go, and if you don't like it, delete it, that's the glory of free-to-play games.    … Expand

    While it’s not really something you can play for hours at a time, there’s really something that keeps bringing me back over and over again. I already walk a lot during the day when I take out my dog, but now I’m going out even more by myself often just to see what’s lurking around my house.

    Had a lot of fun with it at it's peak! Its a lot more social than it seems and encourages you to get out there and walk around. But as it got more complicated it got more predatory and i can only semi-recommend it

I fear such a shallow offering is doomed to fade away into oblivion much sooner than the developers expect, ending up as merely an elaborate piece of marketing for the main title sun/moon games. I doubt Niantic realizes that they will never repeat this success of these first few days and that income will drop sharply in the weeks hence.     -Fix server issues (of course)
    -Make the AR option available on phones without gyroscopes, or at least a simplified version of AR
    -Implement generation one battle system across the board (flicking should be restricted to throwing pokeballs, and rocks.)
    -Implement the gen one leveling system. Current leveling system screams cash grab.
    -Allow users to suggest/vote on better locations for poke stops, gyms, etc. (Nearest stop location for me is a church...)
    -Allow users to vote for additional pokemon being added, and don't add any more until the game play is decent.

Pokemon Go is flawed at best but it is an endearing project that, similar to Bungie’s Destiny, has evolved over time into something much greater and relatively smoother than it initially was when presented. Over the past week (and potentially still going on) Niantic has been slowly but surely releasing new pocket monsters into the wild. Although not all Generation 1 and 2 Pokemon are in the game as of yet- many monsters of the legendary variety have yet to ever show up and be confirmed, this is definitely good for publicity as well as for adding content to the alternate reality simulation.

    I was never personally big on Pokemon Go, but I recently started watching the original Indigo League again for old time’s sake- more on that later, as I was considering blogging about it and my impressions as well. Needless to say, this led me to want to scratch my Pokemon itch- something that I haven’t felt in a good long time, and rather than shell out the forty bucks for the newest game(s) I deigned it an appropriate time for the hefty download to my iPhone instead.

    It’s only been a couple of days and I’ve played sparingly here and there between work and other responsibilities, but I’m finding that it is easily one of the most accessible titles, if a bit frustrating thanks to several glitches and bugs here and there. The most annoying aspects come from random GPS and server failures as well as the fact that the app takes about six or seven tries to even get started. Besides three moments where my app crashed right when I captured rarer monsters, it’s been fun and games so far. I’m a solid level ten and already have some nice second generation additions with over five or six hundred combat proficiency and power.

    My basic impressions are probably pretty close to any and everything else you’ve heard about the game and the update in the past, however I still think some things merit credit or explanation where credit or explanation are due. The most recent update has added some other elements besides simple boosts to the roster and the mechanics. Pokemon now more actively and realistically try to evade capture- often knocking even well-aimed pokeballs away if you’re not careful in your timing. Several new items have been added as well to further expand the lore and the universe of Pokemon Go. All in all, the update itself lays a solid layer upon the shaky foundation of the game and actually makes it a little more balanced and playable even for its flaws.

    Sure, it’s annoying as ever that some of the rarer Pokemon, no matter their level, will break free of most any pokeball and virtually ignore your berries and charms- I’m talking to you Togepi and Totodile. But all in all it’s a rich experience and one that, despite being limited to only some three hundred of the total eight hundred plus Pokemon now available in the known universe, is fun and encompasses the feelings I imagine Ash, Brock, and Misty must’ve felt in the original series. I’m interested to see where the app goes from here and hope that it gets the continued support it and fans deserve as well. It’s a worthy goal to want to meld interactive gaming and health benefits, after all.    … Expand

    I had a ton of fun with GO for a decent amount of time. Collecting Pokemon was fun and addictive. But many of the combat elements and overall long term stance with this game falls flat.

Well, basically anything. However, iOS has a giant piece of touching in one screen while the 3DS only has one touch screen making its gameplay a bit difficult to handle over. Maybe release this game on the eShop for free? Maybe things could work out a bit better. A change of plans should've been done, but instead, you've given those iOS freaks a Pokémon game that just doesn't seem to work on any iOS device.     This game isn't fun, it's just addictive. There are still improvements to be made, but otherwise, it's a good game. Pokemon are so hard to catch sometimes, especially flying ones and on the trailer, it was more epic, but it's alright still... I made that point twice but who cares.

    Catching pokemons is basically what the games wants you to do, go out of your house and catch as many mons as possible. In my opinion it is the most boring aspect of the game, you just throw balls at wild pokemons and hope they stay in. It gets repetitive really fast and Niantic knows it well, that's why there are constant events with exclusive new/shiny mons every time, to make the game feel fresh every week or so. Inside of events you only find the 10 or so featured event pokemons. What that means is most pokemons are locked inside of random events that happen once a year if you are lucky, and if you want a specific mon as soon as possible you will have to wait a lot. Outside of events you only find rattatas or the equivalent of rattata for the next gens.

    Raiding allows you to catch rare mons and legendaries, they will appear as bosses inside of a gym and you have to defeat it before the time ends and you can try to defeat them with a group of people or alone. It is again, incredibly repetitive as you just need to tap the screen on the same point of your device until the boss is defeated or the time runs out. 99% of legendary pokemons are impossible to defeat alone and you will need a large group of people to defend them. No matter how good you are at the game, there is absolutely nothing you can do to kill the boss faster, or to outplay in some way the boss to deafeat it, all you can do is click the screen of your phone until it dies. The only difference between day 1 players and new players is the pokemons they own, if you give a fully maxed account to a new player, they will be as good as a day 1 player, because they will have to tap the screen the same way.

    Pvp (also known as go battle league) is by far the best part of the game, however it is the least played. In pvp there are three main rotating leagues, each one allows pokemons of a different combat power, you pick 3 of them and queue into another guy using 3 pokemons. Up until they show the mons in battle, you have absolutely no idea what they are playing. Most teams are built around this blind pick, and some times no matter what you will just be hard countered by your opponent's team. That's because of the mechanics of pvp: it's a "turn" based game, with each turn lasting 0,5 seconds. If you touch the screen, your pokemon will use a fast move (that can last from 1 turn of 0,5 second to 5 turns of 2,5 seconds), this fast move damages the opponent mon and generates energy for your own mon. Once you have enough energy, you can throw a charged attack, which does a lot of damage. Because charge attack are so strong, you can choose to shield your pokemon from it (2 times per match) and make it take only 1hp of damage istead of the full damage. If you swap pokemons, you can't swap it again for the next 60 seconds, meaning that if you lose lead, swap, and they swap into a pokemon that counters yours, you will have to play a bad matchup for 60 seconds. This is again, what makes it impossible to win some games and some and why I wrote earlier that " sometimes no matter what you will just be hard countered by your opponent's team". Experienced players will know how to play out of a bad lead and a bad swap, and will still be able to win the game. While at first glance it will look like just another tapping simulator, it is so much more than that, you have to make split seconds decisions according to your opponent, you can swap your pokemons with a precise timing in order to take their charge move on a different pokemon and waste all their energy, you can bait their shields with a weak and unexpensive charge move to then hit them really hard with a more expensive one... I absolutely reccomend you giving it a shot or at least watching some video of it on youtube, especially the ones where the highest rated players explain their gameplay, you will understand just how complex a game like this can be.
    However, there are just so many problems with pvp, and I'm not just talking about problems caused by game design, the gamemode is full of bugs. Even catches and raids are full of problems and bugs, but because in pvp a turn (0,5 seconds) can be the difference between a win and a loss, having a bug occur during a game can cost you the game. These bugs have been around ever since pvp came out and haven't been fixed yet, and combined with the already present problems of pvp makes for an incredibly frustrating experience. I would like to list every single problem this gamemode has, but unfortunately I don't have enough characters left to do so.     The game has some great potential, sadly the developers are not utilizing these.
    The formula of this game was a seed for succes (Nostalgia + New Technology + Social Interactions) but the execution is pretty poor, which is a shame. It could've been more than what it currently is.

Pokemon density is based off of data gathered from an earlier application called Ingress that mapped where people used their phones most.

    - Due to this obstacle, players have overlooked the point of the entire game and started driving around in their Mercedes to get from location to location or downloading the APK off of GitHub so that they can fool their Android emulator into positioning them anywhere on the map they wish without moving. This sort of tactic is against the ToS but so far no mentions of anti-hack have been made. The game is quickly becoming a wasteland of carbon emissions and broken, gentrified gameplay with high barriers of entry for children and the less advantaged.

    - Progression is rather slow, and for some reason the quality of the Pokemon you encounter depends on your time playing. This means that the game supports early adopters. If you didn't start on July 6 then it's quickly approaching the point to where you might as well not even play at all, since there's no cap to the Pokemon quality that I'm aware of and you will never catch up. The only hope is that leveling up becomes so logarithmically hindered that everyone will be able to reach the same approximate level within a few days and no one will make it much further.

    - There are premium (paid) items that increase the speed of this progression, once again giving an advantage to wealthier users.

    - Battles are nothing like the other games other than selecting the right Pokemon types; they are more passive in a way that again favors those who are statistically superior (i.e. those who have shelled out more money, had the luxury of spending more time on the game, got lucky, etc.) The takeaway message here is that personal skill is practically irrelevant to battling.

    - There is very little explanation of game mechanics and none of the above will be particularly obvious to you unless you're familiar with video games and have already invested several hours into the game.

    So in conclusion the game greatly favors urban-or-suburban-dwelling, well-to-do users with a great deal of free time and/or money, who started playing early in July. Having a car and living in an area with light traffic helps also. Living in a place with temperate weather where you can actually use your phone outdoors or walk around for several minutes without absorbing unhealthy amounts of radiation helps.

    Basically unless you are rich, have a car, are already in good shape, live in a suburban area with low population density and lots of public meeting places like parks, are between the 40 degree and 50 degree latitude lines, and started playing last week, you might want to rethink bothering with this thing unless you're fine with working way too hard to catch a bunch of Rattatas and Pidgeys for a week.

    It's unfortunate because this is the most original and interesting Pokemon game since the original. The "game-ification" of getting out and walking or running around - assuming you aren't polluting the atmosphere by using your SUV or sports car to catch digital vagaries - is extremely effective and I've jogged 12 km in the last day alone just for this game. I would like to say these issues are going to improve but this is a Nintendo subsidiary we're talking about here; these guys aren't exactly known for finely-tuned gameplay unless you spend a lot of time in college dorm lounges.    … Expand

Also--you don't even have to battle the Pokemon to catch them--which is dumb. Dust off your DS and play Pokemon Y instead. Graphics and sound are nice though.

It's just too limited right now to be more fun and I'm in an area where the application works fine.     With no battling involved during the capture, there is only one option for combat in this game, namely, Gym battles. This is probably the worst part of the game. Where the original games required strategical thinking, Pokémon GO just needs to tapped repeatedly on the screen to defeat your enemy.
    Another complaint is the amount of Pokémon that are available for capture. As of now, there are 721 different species, with new ones in the upcoming Pokémon Sun & Moon later this year. Of these 721 Pokémon, only the original 151 are available in Pokémon GO.
    The battery and data usage of the game also pose a problem. The battery usage does not seem out of place, since most mobile games tend use a lot of energy. The data usage could be fixed by using wi-fi, but since Pokémon GO requires you to run around the world, wi-fi is not always available. Having to use data to play this game optimally makes it less free to play, since you have to pay for your data usage.
    Weirdly enough, despite the lacking game play, the relatively small amount of catchable Pokémon and the battery and data usage, this game is a lot of fun. It makes people go to places they have never been to and meet like-minded individuals that are also on the hunt for virtual critters.    … Expand

    i really love playing the game its addictive, but only when its working. I have put some actual money into it and a lot of the time and when i apply an item such as an incense or lucky egg, it glitches on me then i have to restart, for it them not to load for an hour, wasting my actual money spent as the item has then worn off.     - Relatively useless if sitting at home with no in-app purchases & useless for a lot of rural players that have no pokestops, gyms, or rare Pokemon spawns.
    - Lack of tutorial or guidance for newcomers that can make it daunting to start your adventure. In a way, this mirrors the usual lack of guidance or support from Niantic.

    Final Verdict:
    DO: Download it, make a GOOD username (choose carefully) and give it a try by casually including it in your daily commute.

    DO NOT: Buy microtransactions because
    a) This is an average/mediocre app at best

I don't like socializing, I am pretty antisocial so that aspect of the game is totally lost on me. When I log on, I catch the Pokemon within my radius, try to complete some tasks and then log off for who knows how many days. Honestly, at this point, the game is just taking up space on my phone.

    The combat just sucks. There is no strategy unlike the actual pokemon games, you just tap the screen. But I'm not much of a battler, I'm more of a collector and enjoy capturing shinies more than anything else in this game.

    Basically, if you have other friends interested in playing this, you can have a fun experience and do some trades and raids together. If you plan to play this alone, don't even bother. It's a waste of time. Unless you walk a lot and want some distraction to pass some time.    … Expand

Do they take the game away from Niantic and revamp it to be more like traditional Pokemon games (I can hope!). Or do they double down on the Ingress-style gameplay?

    Doing the former may mean the complete revitalization of Pokemon. Doing the latter will, in my opinion, lead to ultimate failure as the novelty wears off.

    Where will they go from here? They can make this something great, or they could drop the ball big time. Only time will tell.

    The first issue is if your favorite pokemon is not the common ones around your area then you probably wouldn't be able to use it in battle because of its low stats (point no. 2). This is apparent when I see almost all the gyms around my area being controlled by commonly found pokemons. Rarely can someone power up their starter pokemon unless it can be consistently found around their area.

    Another mechanism of this game is as you level up the strength of the wild pokemon that you find also increases. This deters trainers from investing time and effort to train older pokemons. Why spend the resources to level a pokemon from 50 CP to 300 CP when the next pokemon one finds in the wild is 300 CP?

    Finally, the gym mechanism doesn't work for casuals. Around my area the gyms are guarded by pokemons over 1000 CP. Casuals with few hundred CP pokemons would be obliterated trying to battle at gyms.    … Expand

The launching of the app came with a myriad of problems: awful crashing, using lures to get people to be robbed, raped or beaten up, putting pokemon in holy and respected establishments that caused outrage, rural areas had virtually no diversity in pokemon, terrible rng based pokemon catching that any main Pokemon title could do better and maintenance that kept players away from the app when it was supposedly ready for launch.

    The influx of downloads might have been a reason why it was unprepared, but when you take a iconic name and know that many who are downloading are the same people that played the originals as kids (along with being one of the most popular franchises of all time across most of the world) you should have anticipated more and refine your systems to handle it better. Making a team based allegiance on top of that (with stupid memes and competition) is just downright pointless. Because it is free and a mobile game, it also sells lures and other microtransactions that go through your time duration even if you are not on the game! It is stupid and should never be allowed.

    The updates of adding the Johto region is admirable, but with over 700 Pokemon now, it is much easier to just play on the 3DS of any of the new or latest Pokemon games and trade and catch there. Also it's combat is better too, and if you can't get THAT right, then you defeated your own concept entirely. Overall, Pokemon GO is a subpar app that has cool concepts that are mired by technical and social problems that plague it to this very day.    … Expand

    It's hard to deny the overwhelming success of Go and the impact on popular culture, however, as a game, its far too starved of content. The sucess of Go to me was the simple early game progression as the community as a whole slowly grew in power and gained more cooler and rarer Pokemon, watching Gyms go from Pidgeottos to Charizards to Dragonites. Once that community progession halted and levels would theoretically take around a month and your Pokedex was filled it really lost its charm and became a grind for that extra bit of CP or evolve that final rare Pokemon which you already know your Dragonite is superior to and youll never use it.

    Gen 2 helped but adding new Pokemon along the road in a game like this isnt going relight that flame.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was promising when it was advertised/first came out, but now it's just gone down hill. This game probably had the most potential and most hype in the history of games, but absolutely failed to deliver.

    - Rural areas, and even some suburban areas, are completely screwed over because barely any pokémon spawn there. This effectively cuts out a good chunk of their playerbase, and a good chunk out of their score. (-2)

    - The battle system is only kept for gym battles. (-1)

    - Everything is repetitive. I don't know anyone, online or offline, who still plays Pokémon Go. There's nothing fun or anything new to do any more. (-1)

    - There's no major updates (besides generation updates, which are going to happen every blue moon). (-1)

    - Niantic is too afraid to modify the game (in terms of actual gameplay, not pokémon) after they published it. No Pokéstops/gyms have been added/removed from Niantic, and there's not much players can do to modify/improve the game (-1)

    - Speaking of Niantic, let's face it, Pokémon Go is just a reskinned Ingress with pokémon involved. (-1)

    Overall, they did have a good idea (which I'll give a +1 for), but they ultimately failed to bring it to what it was expected to be.    … Expand

    The thrill of walking around, exploring was awesome, really unique and innovative. But the battling gameplay was rubbish and the app drained battery life too fast.

    Pokémon GO is the result of not listening to your community + heavy monetization of your game. The change to Remote Passes was the nail in the coffin, and it just showed how little communication there was between Niantic and the playerbase. The game doesn't feel rewarding enough to motivate you and go out to get some new Pokémons, and Niantic knows that.     While it's fun to catch and collect the Pokemon, ultimately the game is a total waste of time. There's no reason to evolve or level up Pokemon, when you can just catch fully evolved ones later on. Your starter Pokemon ends up being the weakest one because you won't find them anywhere. No real battling, leveling, trading, interaction of any kind with other people.

    The concept is a 10/10, seriously this could make billions as a project, the whole idea is amazing.
    The game is **** up tho, basically you wait for the phone to vibrate, click on the pokemon, throw a pokeball, stop. This is all you have to do. No pvp, no pokemon exchange, no friends list, no personalization, pokemons have no skills, no levels,    Biggest upset in videogame history for me.

    You don’t even have to like Pokémon to enjoy Pokémon Go. During the previous year, Pokémon Go has tuned its ideas and it’s now even more original and addictive. This is a one-of-a-kind game.

    Improvements and additions over time – including the Raid-style events for catching legendary Pokémon, as teased in the original trailer – as well as ongoing tweaks to fundamental systems stand to improve Pokémon Go as a game, but the quality (and novelty) of the experience of playing, particularly as part of a group, is already there. Go could still one day be the legendary game its immense potential hints at.
