This game manages to be a lot of fun because of the variety and lots to do. There are lots of different kinds of enemies. You'll have a lot of items to collect too. To top it off, this game even has some great voice acting.

STORY: after the opening, there isn't much story to speak of aside from a few cutscenes with the gang here and there, but, as it is a Scooby-Doo game, expect your usual Mystery Inc. hijinks.

STORY: after the opening, there isn't much story to speak of aside from a few cutscenes with the gang here and there, but, as it is a Scooby-Doo game, expect your usual Mystery Inc. hijinks.

GAMEPLAY: For the first half of the game, I had a lot of fun exploring, fighting a variety of monsters, and discovering new areas and new powerups. But in the second half of the game, my enjoyment quite dramatically lessened. As the well of discoverable areas started drying up, so did the game's hints of what do or where to go next. More than once I had to consult a guide to figure out where I should be, as the in-game map is just not very intuitive or helpful at all. The (oddly) fixed camera angles do not help, often obscuring doors or passages that would've otherwise been obvious, and makes seeing bottomless pits and upcoming enemies much harder than it needs to be. Other than that, it is your standard platforming game with a few puzzles here and there.

GRAPHICS: Heavy Iron continues its tradition of nearly perfectly translating the source material from cartoon to screen. Every texture and animation looks very much like the Scooby-Doo audiences have come to know and love over the years.

SOUND: the music, voice cast, and sound effects all sound like they were ripped straight from the show, and the game gets bonus points for including a laugh track depending on what Scooby is doing. However, Scooby himself loves to point out enemies by name and does so for every single one. Expect to hear "Roh no, it's a headless specter!" or variations of this many more times, long after it's already become massively irritating.

REPLAYABLITY: as a Metroidvania, this game's replay value is fair, pretty much bolstered by the nature of the game's design. There are collectible monster coins and Scooby snacks to find, some obvious, some very well-hidden. This surely squeezes a few more hours out of the game, though whether that's your idea of fun is up to you.

VERDICT: Night of 100 Frights is an okay platformer that is hurt by a few confusing design decisions, but massively helped by Heavy Iron's excellent use of the Scooby-Doo license. Though the later Battle for Bikini Bottom is a much better game, I recommend giving this a try at least once.

  1. A good action game that actually manages to make excellent use of its license.
  2. In the end the Scooby Doo license is well served.
  3. A rare gem that only uses the license as a tool to build a very good platform game.
