One of the best in the series with exciting gameplay and clever mission objectives.
  2. It's by no means an original experience, but it still manages to entertain from start to finish. Army Men fans are going to love it.
  3. Nintendo Power
    72
The backgrounds are beautifully rendered and the action runs nonstop. [May 2003, p.138]
  4. Though it lacks any original mechanics, and has a somewhat shallow premise, Sarge’s War is very finely polished. So polished, in fact, that you may just slip up (grasp the pun?) as a gamer and ignore the game outright.
  5. Game Informer
    60
For all the improvement Sarge's War shows over its predecessors, it's still only average at best. [May 2003, p.86]
  6. There are literally dozens of better third-person-perspective, run-and-gun shooters on the market right now.
  7. Play Magazine
    50
The game is still traeemark Army Men clunky, but you can look past the sloppier qualities - it still smacks of low-key production value - and enjoy the ceaseless combat for its base appeal. [June 2003, p.56]
  8. Electronic Gaming Monthly
    45
Any aspect of the game that apires to distinction is negated by mediocrity. [May 2003, p.126]
  9. GMR Magazine
    40
Bomb-collection out the wazoo, a grim but bland story line, and everything old packaged as if it were new. [June 2003, p.75]
  10. 40
Improvements to the solo adventure and the addition of some basic multiplayer modes elevate the game above its predecessors, but it can't turn the tide of battle in the franchise's favor.
  11. GameNow
    25
The games controls are clunky, the camera is spazzy, and the action stutters like crazy. [May 2003, p.41]

I have fond memories of playing this game back in the day, but in the modern day there is nothing here worth going back to. The levels are incredibly simple and mind numbingly boring. The graphics are awful compared to other games from the same generation, the frame rate on the gamecube is atrocious, and the amount of game content is incredibly lacking. The game also has a propensity to freeze when you input too many buttons at the same time. It only happened to me twice during gameplay, but I could consistently get it to happen when I tried. My biggest gripe, however, is with the camera controls. Although you can control the camera independently from the movement, the camera also adjusts in the direction that your character is facing so you are often fighting with the camera to get anything accomplished. All of this leads to a complete mess of a game that while mildly enjoyable back in 2004, is a painful waste of time in 2023. Full Review »

I would call this a spoiler alert, but since it was basically advertised all over the game, can't call it much of a spoiler. Essentially every main character save for Sargent Hawk is left dead or MIA, which alone caused much of the fanbase to revolt. To ad to that, Hawk has become a serious, no-nonsense soldier with a grim outlook on life; as opposed to the playful, joke cracking hero we always had before. Environments are dark, dank and forlorn... weapons are metal instead of plastic... the list of changes here is endless. In my honest opinion, story and ascetic changes aside, Sarge's War is only and okay that limps to a 7 due to a great multiplayer. Gameplay feels much less 'fun' than the previous installments, it's a very short game (only about a dozen or so levels), and the soundtrack is almost nonexistent. Not to say it's a bad game, it's one of the better installments Army Men got in the 6th generation of consoles tbh and has its moments. But it's almost purely for the hardest of hardcore Army Men fans and military shooter fans, and even then feels lacking(sans the multiplayer). Also if you grew up with Sarge's Heroes and Air Attack and all those great games, might wanna skip a cut-scene or two. You may end up with some man tears. Or just bawling in general. Full Review »
