There is a good story and a nice rule-based combat system that is easy to learn and fun to master. It might not be as good as the real thing but as a GBA title it's a solid title with a few pleasant surprises.
-
The learning curve is a little steep and not everyone may enjoy losing dozens of battles before they finally get the hang of it. However, it should be noted that with 120 cards from the original card game as well as 60 cards from the expansion pack, Atari is extremely faithful to the source material.
-
Duel Masters is a fun and fairly addictive game and the GBA version is faithful enough to be worth a look-in if you really want to play it solo on the move.
-
Despite it's aesthetic weaknesses, Sempai Legends is a good trading-card game and definitely a match for its competitors.
-
Duel Masters throws one duel after another at you with little reward beyond a new card and making it one step closer to the end of the game. You've got to really like the Duel Masters card game or else this will get old and fast.
-
Pocket GamesIf you're a fan of the trading card game, you should find this enjoyable enough for practice or when no opponents are around. [Summer 2004, p.28]
-
The duel system is solid, but poor production values (ie, no artwork for the cards) and slow-paced gameplay drag down the game a notch or two.
-
Nintendo PowerA welcome tutorial teaches the basics, and a gradual ramping up of difficulty guarantees that you'll have t a chance to develop your skills before you take on tough challenges. [Aug 2004, p.123]
-
If you already like Duel Masters, have lots of the cards, and like its game mechanics, go ahead and get the GBA version. It sports a whole lot of what you already like. But if you are like me and are getting quite burned out on the whole card battling scene, this game most definitely will not change your mind about it.
