  1. I found the Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi for the Nintendo DS a slightly below average action game that just had too many small problems adding up to a not fun game.
  2. Like a poisonous mushroom, Rise of the Fungi looks good but makes you feel bad.
  3. In fact, the aesthetic and fun weapon building elements save this title from utter mediocrity.

If there's a sequel, maybe the developers will spend as much time fleshing out the game as they did their concept art.
  5. Even though the controls and gameplay are basically broken, the game isn't entirely without merit.
  6. The worst thing is, there was tremendous potential here. The art style is fantastic, and the campy, B-movie concept is golden. And the way you make new weapons out of garbage you find – sticks, needles, broken shards of glass – is really fun. But once you add the gameplay in there, ugggh. Mushrooms grow where living things have died – in this case, the underlying corpse belonged to fun.

Cribs some good ideas from the Wii title but implements them badly - much like every other element of the game. [Mar 2009, p.69]
  8. Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi is juggling too many play styles at the same time. Instead of coming together into a fun package, the platforming, RPG elements and real-time combat get in each others’ way.
  9. Having a platformer that punishes players for missing jumps would be fine if determining where a jump begins is clear or even grappling areas, but that's not the case here. Couple that with the combat system that has frequent problems registering hits and you have one frustrating to play game.
