Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi is a decent platformer that tries a little to hard to put as many features as possible into the game and ends up over complicating itself. A few odd design and control choices hamper the moody and unique atmosphere and pales in comparison to its console counterpart.
-
Rise of the Fungi is unique and building scav is rewarding, but the awkward combat and cheap kills sour the experience.
-
Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi for the NDS had some potential to be an interesting title and provided some neat concepts, but unfortunately, it stumbles in the execution. The controls are very clunky, and the unfair deaths due to poor platforming make it very difficult to enjoy this title.
-
Like a poisonous mushroom, Rise of the Fungi looks good but makes you feel bad.
-
If there's a sequel, maybe the developers will spend as much time fleshing out the game as they did their concept art.
-
The worst thing is, there was tremendous potential here. The art style is fantastic, and the campy, B-movie concept is golden. And the way you make new weapons out of garbage you find – sticks, needles, broken shards of glass – is really fun. But once you add the gameplay in there, ugggh. Mushrooms grow where living things have died – in this case, the underlying corpse belonged to fun.
-
Having a platformer that punishes players for missing jumps would be fine if determining where a jump begins is clear or even grappling areas, but that's not the case here. Couple that with the combat system that has frequent problems registering hits and you have one frustrating to play game.
