A great game that you can’t go wrong with. But unless you’re prepared to play the multi-player modes for months on end with your buddies, (remember there is no online play), then you’d be advised to rent this.
-
Nintendo PowerNonetheless, the action is well-balanced and production values(especially an unprecedented amount of voiceover)are top-notch. [Nov. 2006, p.85]
-
It's not without a few problems here and there, but if you liked the console MechAssault games, or are just looking for a solid mech action title on the DS, MechAssault: Phantom War won't disappoint you.
-
Game InformerWhile technical limitations hold the game back from greatness, when you look past the downgraded visuals there's a lot to like. [Oct. 2006, p.114]
-
Apart from the lack of online play, MechAssault: Phantom War brings all of the mech combat action from the Xbox to the Nintendo DS without losing much in translation.
-
Even if the game had a good development schedule, MechAssault does feel just a little rushed in places. But ultimately, the end product is a cool and kickass battle, both in single and multiplayer.
-
Kudos to the developer for squeezing this much game into a DS cart.
-
All in all, as a single-player experience, Phantom War is short, fairly sweet, and utterly unremarkable. The saving grace and the final nail in its coffin come from a single point: the multiplayer mode.
-
Too short, but MechAssault Phantom War is an engaging robot combat game.
-
Nintendo GamerLearn to work with shonky controls and there's a decent game within this lumbering exterior. [Sept 2007, p.71]
-
The graphics and multiplayer options should've been weighed out more, but are made up for with excellent gameplay and decent Wi-Fi against a friend. If robot bashing is beating heavily anywhere in your body, it's time to settle in with a few rounds of this game. You won't be sorry.
-
A decent diversion for the casual fan, though hardcore players are likely to find it a bit on the short side.
-
Though the campaign will pit you against clusters of foes at every turn, the games’ less than stellar combat mechanics will greatly dull the experience.
-
I tried to find something to like, I really did, but at the end of the day I just plain didn't like it.
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyBut mostly the gameplay comes down to trading fire with enemies who have way too much health and not ennough variety in battle tactics. [Nov. 2006, p.140]
-
Although MechAssault: Phantom War isn't necessarily the worst game to ever pop up on the DS, it's pretty close to the bottom of the pile. The poor controls and bland graphics are a far cry from everything that made the original MechAssault game on the Xbox such a success.
