Jan 5, 2016In many ways, this game reminds me of the bane of my gaming existence, Goldeneye: Rogue Agent for DS.
It's:
- Based off a popular shooter
- Control is mainly stylus-based
- A massive disappointment
The DS stylus is a good piece of hardware. But it's not for action games like this.
If you're looking for an awesome sequel to the MechAssault series, this isn't it. -
Jun 6, 2023This mech-based style game has some rather ropey cut scenes, but the game itself is a fun 3D blaster with a nice variety of mechs, enemies and missions. It's never spectacular but always solid in every department and certainly worth a look for fans of the genre.

#69 Most Discussed DS Game of 2006

Even if the game had a good development schedule, MechAssault does feel just a little rushed in places. But ultimately, the end product is a cool and kickass battle, both in single and multiplayer.

Game InformerWhile technical limitations hold the game back from greatness, when you look past the downgraded visuals there's a lot to like. [Oct. 2006, p.114]

Although MechAssault: Phantom War isn't necessarily the worst game to ever pop up on the DS, it's pretty close to the bottom of the pile. The poor controls and bland graphics are a far cry from everything that made the original MechAssault game on the Xbox such a success.
