Mario Party: Star Rush is far and away the most fun I've ever had with a Mario Party game. [Issue #24 – November/December 2016, p.17M]

A fresh take on the series, with new mechanics that keep things quick and unpredictable. The level designs are perhaps a little bland compared to the older titles, but the mini-games, boss battles and additional challenges bring together an enjoyable little package that can quite easily be played solo, with solid multiplayer and an eShop download option for those with a single copy of the game.

Mario Party returns to 3DS with Mario Party Star Rush. The game offers lots of fun to be had with friends due to various game modes and mini games. No more waiting for your turn either.

Mario Party Star Rush could be considered as a new start for the franchise, due to huge and deep changes in the gameplay. The turn based system is abandoned and makes room for a more dynamic and fun real time system. You can play up to four players and one copy of the game through the freeware software Party Guest, and multiplayer is really fun.

With Mario Party: Star Rush the classic and static mechanics of the series finally changes (for the better!). Overall, it's a decent party game, and it's fun to play by yourself, too. Its weak points are a lack of minigames, which make the main mode boring after few hours, and some slow loading times.

Mario Party Star Rush’s gameplay design is definitely played on the safe side.

Mario Party: Star Rush is a fresh take on the Mario Party franchise. There’s a lot of familiarity here – many of the same Mario Party characters are re-used and none of the environments stood out as really unique compared to previous games – but even the most die-hard Mario Party fan will find something new here.

Its gameplay is more adapted than ever to portable experience: the modes are fast-paced, and Party Guest lets us enjoy the full multiplayer with just one copy of the game. But it has too few minigames, and the game becomes repetitive quickly.

It's inherently limited by the handheld format, but this is a smart reinvention of a faltering series. [Dec 2016, p.64]

A strong package overall. It has a lot of smart ideas that will hopefully be used in future games, and there’s a good variety of modes to play with.

Mario Party: Star Rush is a little step ahead in the series. It still lacks in contents, but NDcube added a brand new pace in the game mechanics that would be useful in the future.

Mario Party Star Rush may be a turning point for the franchise, fastening the game mechanics and letting players enjoy its minigames even in short bursts. Just don't think you can play it alone: its single player is still relatively disappointing, but all the rest is well done.

Mario Party: Star Rush is a step in the right direction for the Mario Party series, but still a few steps short of achieving it. The gameMario Party: Star Rush is a step in the right direction for the Mario Party series, but still a few steps short of achieving it. The game offers many different game modes to play, many of which are rather fun to play. The Toad Scramble mode is an interesting twist to the series and isn't all that bad really of a mode, though it has it's cons. While the idea of collecting stars has finally returned to the series, Toad Scramble goes through a different method of obtaining them, this time being through the boss mini games seen in the past few installments. It isn't a bad thing, but I still prefer the board hunt method of the first 8 games. On top of that, Toad Scramble doesn't offer much in terms of excitement really. There are little to no board events, which makes traversing the board simplistic and boring, with nothing holding you back from getting to your destination. Everyone taking their turn at once does make the game go faster, but it does have a few issues, such as deciding who gets a Coin Balloon if two players pass it at the same time.

Other modes I've tried include the Balloon Bash mode, which I think is the best mode in the game. It's the closest gameplay to the original style, with players moving around a board to collect stars. The rules are a bit different and stars are not only easy to obtain due to the small boards, but also plentiful, as you can gain up to three stars at once at half the original star price. On top of that, collecting a Coin Balloon will always result in a mini game and the fact that the balloons are common means you'll likely play a mini game after each turn, which further feels like the original gameplay. It's not perfect, but it's close enough and that works for me at this point.

While I haven't played much outside those two modes, I can say that Mario Party: Star Rush is better than 9, 10 and Island Tour combined. It hasn't quite reached the height of Mario Parties 1-8 or DS or even Advance (yes, I loved that game), but it's good in it's own sense. A step in the right direction, even if it's a little by little process. Not the best, but not terrible, I'd recommend it for those who don't mind a bit of mindless, single player fun.

With friends it's an absolute blast and everyone moving at the same time makes the games move quicker, skipping the time of boredom, waiting for others to move. With so many new modes there is a lot of variety here too. The best Mario Party by far, I think. Full Review »
