Keep your expectations in line, realize this is a handheld game, and you will probably have a fun time with IronFall Invasion, much like I did.

IronFall: Invasion is a solid game, but one with problems in its opening act. You will have to get used to the controls and toy around with the options to make it all work for you.

Overall, however, the experience is still fairly solid, so we recommend giving the free content a shake and then deciding whether or not you want more of it.

It features a very good graphical component by most accounts and its gameplay mechanics are compelling enough…but it lacks the extra flair to make it stand out and its lack of originality make it yet another generic shooter in the market.

Multiplayer is the saving grace of Ironfall: Invasion. Although it doesn't offer anything new, it should scratch that itch for arena shooter fans who are looking for something to play online long term on 3DS.

If you can accept IronFall as dumb fun, then you might derive some enjoyment from its multiplayer – but it has too many issues to fully recommend it. [Issue #14: Old vs. New – March/April 2015, p.28]

An interesting attempt to make a third person shooter exclusively for 3DS, but its numerous issues left the game in the dust.

Ironfall: Invasion attempts to plug the rather vacant hole in the 3DS' shooter lineup and with its technically impressive, smooth 60fps, Gears of War-inspired gameplay it very nearly does that. Unfortunately, its campaign is hollow, cliched and ultimately boring.

Boring, hard to control and with an insipid level design. You could probably have some fun with the online mode, but nothing more.

Simplistic game and level design make Ironfall Invasion a boring and dull third person shooter. A wasted opportunity.

It's good to see a shooter on Nintendo's handheld, but, on the other hand, Ironfall Invasion reminds us why so few made their way to the double screen: controls feels awkward. What's more, the game is not a great shooter per se, so you'd better consider sticking to other genres.

It's clear that developer VD-DEV wanted so badly to bring a Gears of War-like experience to Nintendo 3DS, but the result is a game with way too many flaws.

A unique proposition on the 3DS it may be, but Ironfall Invasion has a long way to go to trouble the classics it emulates.

Ironfall Invasion looks (a bit) and plays (a lot) like a mobile game. It lacks the depth and refinement of a “premium” console title, and overall ends up being an extremely generic and unappealing gameplay experience.

IronFall Invasion is probably the most boring game on the Nintendo 3DS. There is some fun to be had in the multiplayer, but the terrible voice acting, mediocre graphics and lack of depth make IronFall a complete waste of time.

It is simply just generic and does not justify itself enough to stand tall in the forest of third-person shooters on the market.

While the visuals are nice and seem to push the hardware a lot of times, you can hardly say that about the mechanics or AI, which are just a tad over the common mobile game on your phone.

Technologically impressive, Ironfall Invasion suffers gameplay problems that will certainly prevent you from buying more content after downloading the first free level and multiplayer mode.

Ironfall is a terrible third-person shooter with clunky cover mechanics, shoddy controls and even worse voice-acting.

A technical showcase for the 3DS but artistically speaking this gets almost everything wrong, from the banal action to the laughable storytelling.

A brutally generic and uninspired game that's let down mightily by hardware that is simply no good for it. It works, and as a tech demo for a Gears of War clone on 3DS it would even be exciting, but as a product to pay real money for, there's nothing that redeems IronFall as something worth playing.

I only made it a few minutes into the demo, but the controls are so unbearably bad that you couldn't pay me to play further.

The controls are utter garbage - there are two modes, C-Stick and touch screen. The C-Stick on the New 3DS isn't suitable for aiming, so getting the crosshair to settle on something is an exercise in futility. You will find the C-stick isn't sensitive enough while looking (it takes over 2 seconds to do a 360) and is too imprecise when aiming. Touch-screen aiming *should* work (it worked very well for Metroid Prime: Hunters) but the *maximum* sensitivity is unbearably slow. Unless you're frantically swiping across the screen, you can barely even get the crosshair to move. The touch screen aiming is also implemented the wrong way - it should behave like an analog stick (further from the center making you turn faster) but instead it's implemented like a mouse (requiring you to repeatedly swipe your finger along the screen to turn).

In the campaign, gameplay is frequently interrupted by stupid cutscenes. You enter a room, and there's a cutscene of enemies slowly plodding into the room and walking into position. Your character just lets them get situated before bothering to attack them? You press a button, there's a clunky cutscene. You kick down a door, there's a clunky cutscene.

The voice 'acting' is excruciating, the graphics aren't anything to write home about, the weapons are generic, the enemies are extremely bland, and the pace is slower than a crawl.
