Meat Loaf: In Search of ParadiseMarch 12, 2008Actor, performer, and multiplatinum rock icon Meat Loaf reveals surprising shades of himself--and a fertile, creative mind in constant flux--in this intimate and highly entertaining theatrical feature documentary. The time is early 2007, one of the most stressful in Meat Loaf's career. He's about to launch his most ambitious tour ever, an 18-month-long marathon to support "Bat Out of Hell III", the final album of the legendary "Bat" trilogy. The earlier "Bat" albums were two of the biggest sellers of all time, with combined sales of over 55 million, so a lackluster but respectable performance on this new tour just won't measure up. Meat Loaf's exhausting and often poignant journey takes him from grueling rehearsals in Burbank, California, to the Canadian portion of his tour. Along the way, an unexpected media controversy erupts over the staging of one of his songs--a controversy that raises questions about his art, his age, his relevance--and brings into focus the drive (and demons) that have fueled his over-the-top stage persona for almost 40 years. TroubadoursFebruary 2, 2011In the wake of the turbulent 1960s, a new style of song and songwriter came to the fore. In Los Angeles, the emerging center of the American music scene, young songwriters come together to express, to inspire, to complete, to love. That scene largely revolved around an old beatnik club with capacity of a few hundred people, The Troubadour. The seed idea for this film, came out of a series of landmark reunion concerts James Taylor and Carole King played at the Troubadour in 2007, to mark the club’s 50th anniversary. The Finest HoursJanuary 29, 2016On February 18, 1952, a massive nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and wreaking havoc on the ships caught in its deadly path, including the SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound for Boston, which was literally ripped in half, trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly-sinking stern. As the senior officer on board, first assistant engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) soon realizes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and inspire the men to set aside their differences and work together to ride out one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast. Meanwhile, as word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders a daring operation to rescue the stranded men. Despite overwhelming odds, four men, led by Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and little, if any, means of navigation, facing frigid temperatures, 60-foot high waves and hurricane-force winds. The Seasons in Quincy: Four Portraits of John BergerAugust 31, 2016The Seasons in Quincy is the result of a five-year project by Tilda Swinton, Colin MacCabe and Christopher Roth to produce a portrait of the intellectual and storyteller John Berger. In 1973 John Berger abandoned the metropolis to live in the tiny Alpine village of Quincy. He realized that subsistence peasant farming, which had sustained humanity for millennia, was drawing to an historical close. He determined to spend the rest of his life bearing witness to this vanishing existence, not least by participating in it. Berger’s trilogy Into their Labours chronicles the peasant life of this Alpine village and its surrounding countryside. Our portrait places Berger in the rhythm of the seasons in Quincy. The four essay films which comprise The Seasons in Quincy each take different aspects of Berger’s life in the Haute-Savoie, and combine ideas and motifs from Berger’s own work with the atmosphere of his mountain home. Each film was created as an individual work of art but they combine to make a feature film. The Seasons in Quincy shows how film can move beyond text, and beyond fine art, to offer a multifaceted and multilayered portrait.

Tommy's HonourApril 14, 2017Set against the early days of the sport and stunning landscape of Scotland, Tommy's Honour is based on the intimate and powerfully moving true story of the challenging relationship between “Old” Tom (Peter Mullan) and “Young” Tommy Morris (Jack Lowden), the dynamic father-son team who ushered in the modern game of golf. As their fame grew exponentially, Tom and Tommy, Scotland’s Golf Royalty, were touched by drama and personal tragedy. At first matching his father’s success, Tommy’s talent and fame continued to outshine his father’s accomplishments as founder of the Open Championship in 1860, playing record and as a local caddie master, greenskeeper and club & ball maker. But in contrast to Tommy’s public persona, his personal turmoil ultimately led him to rebel against both the aristocracy who gave him opportunity, led by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews chief Alexander Boothby (Sam Neill), and the parents who disdained his passionate relationship with his girlfriend-then-wife Meg Drinnen (Ophelia Lovibond).
