MikeAfter many years, Donny Yen finally comes back to the role that made him a big name in my book at least and it's pretty much a failure. The movie almost feels like 2 smaller movies put together with a small bridge combining the two. Mike Tyson makes an appearance as a bad guy in the film and his fight scene is certainly the highlight of the film. However, where it was placed in the movie and the "outcome" feels extremely dull. All the build up to that fight made it disappointing at how it ended. I have to also mention the fact that, while everyone else in the movie has clearly aged, Yen's Ip Man clearly has not, even though he should be about 60 years old in his life during the timeframe of the movie. It definitely stands out. In the end, Yen should have taken his own advice and not played Ip Man again. The first two movies are some of my favorite Kung Fu movies of all time. This one just felt like a total waste of time. Expand

Although not as tightly plotted as its predecessors, the Kung Fu scenes and drama compensate that. Thus, this movie is still a worthy addition to the Ip Man Trilogy (2008-2015).

Donnie Yen returns as Yip Man, reprising the role for a third time.
The film is a step down in quality from the original and its sequel. Although it doesn't feel like a cash in, as there's plenty of decent elements to it, the overall sense is that the story has been put together simply to facilitate a third movie.
The film also suffers from not having Sammo Hung acting as the fight choreographer. Yuen Woo Ping is instead tasked with putting together the action scenes and, whilst he's competent enough, the action lacks the ferocity and directness of the first two films. Woo Ping is acclaimed for his stylisations, rather than his realism.
Overall the acting is good. Yen is worth watching as always, as is Zhang Jin who plays a rival Wing Chun master who Yen battles in the finale. Amazingly, after being terrible in the first two films, Lynn Hung actually displays some real acting ability. Mainly because her character develops cancer, and she has to express a deep sense of emotive despair.

The direction of the film is adequate. I was hoping for some sweeping establishing shots, like those in the Wong Fei Hung film Rise of the Legend (even if those were CGI, they looked impressive!!), but instead everything is tightly filmed, with very few extended shots at all.

The fight scenes are well shot though, Woo Ping makes great use of wide angles, overhead cameras, close ups etc. But as mentioned, the choreography just isn't as good as Sammo's, which is a real shame.

So, good acting (including former undisputed Heavyweight World Champion "Iron" Mike Tyson, who plays a Triad boss who Yip Man fights in a 3-minute contest), decent direction, decent enough choreography/fight scenes....

Then why only a 5 out of 10.....

Simple. The film takes the piss in terms of the known timeline and what we know about Yip Man.
Couple of examples (out of many!).... Bruce Lee is in the film (played by Danny Chan), who is attempting to get Man to take him as a disciple. It's well known that Lee was taken on as a lay pupil by Man, and trained part-time through his teenage years, before leaving Hong Kong in 1958 (the film is set in 1959/60).
Another glaring mistake (and integral to the plot) is having Man's son (Ip Ching) as an 8 year old. It's well known that Ching was born in the 1936, and that Man had an older son (Ip Chun, born 1924) who isn't in the film at all. That discrepancy really annoyed me, as when the opening credits revealed the year, I was hoping we'd get to see Man (and both his then adult sons) getting into some action!

Overall, it's a passable kung fu film. The fight scenes are decent enough, and the completely fictional storyline bowls along nicely. It's just a bit of an insult to the memory of one of Hong Kong's (and China's) folk heroes.

Script is bad, plot is bad, some actor's acting skills are non-existent, Tyson appears only for 3.5 minutes in the entire film. Nothing like previous Ip Man films.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

"Ip Man 3 will possibly be interesting, right?"

Not exactly as I wanted it to be but it still works anyways. It can live up a few moments of kung fu, but the rest of us will have to watch it again to understand the plot of Ip Man 3.

It gets closer to the legend's personal life.

A few movies about Yip Man were made in the past, but Donnie Yen's 2008 version rewrote the history. Because the craze about martial arts in the last two decades and of course digital world made it to reach every corner of the world. Followed by a sequel and its massive hit, then came many unofficial versions to this series that set in a different timeline of the martial art legend's life.

With this movie, the narration gets lots closer to tell the personal life of Yip Man. But in the first half, like the previous two films, focused on the social issue. Yip Man is fighting for the children's education, when a real estate tycoon plans to replace the school building to a commercial complex. That's it, later the story begins to take us to the random events like a man who's hungry for the best fighter in the town title who end up challenging Yip Man to face him. From there, it's all about Yip Man and his ill wife where the movie switches from action mode to sentimental.

That's not what we expected from a man who's famous for his martial art. Surprisingly, this different approach in storytelling was refreshing. Saving school, the clash for the title and ill wife, so the overall movie was like had three episodes and each dealt on a different motive. Being a biopic and also a martial art movie, it exploited the theme fairly.

I can't say Mike Tyson's acting was so good because it was weird him to speak Cantonese. He was in a minor role, but his presence was a big boost for the movie. If we see him in an action movie, then we all know what to expect and it did not fail to fulfill our wish.

"There's nothing more important than the love of those by your side."

The stunts were not as good as the previous two films and they were too short as well, but technically looked so perfect, especially locking horns between Tyson and Donnie Yen was like head-to-head confrontation between Hollywood and Hong Kong. The other reason to shorten stunts in the movie was to get closer to the legend's personal life. After the survival and fighting the foreign forces, now the time to focus on his own life issues.

The first two films were breathtaking, no one can doubt that. I don't know why it took so long for this third movie, but it still worked. Yet not the best in the trilogy, but remained very close to them with unlike storyline and action sequences. I was disappointed for not continuing from where it ended in the 2nd part. I mean the story has a clean flow, but not what I expected, like, I wanted Bruce Lee and the grand-master coming together.

Actually, I never expected the third installment, I considered it was one of the best duologies you could find in world cinema. But I'm happy they made this one and I'm very much sure there will be fourth. So at least I can expect the Bruce Lee's part in the Yip Man's life story. I was waiting for that from a very long and I believe it won't let me down this time. All the above, I'm looking for the official announcement.

I never thought it would top the original Ip Man, but that is exactly what happened. Ip Man 3 ranks up there with the best martial arts movies of all time and I really believe this will be seen as a classic in the years to come. Where to start? If I would choose one reason why I love this film (other than the incredible action scenes), is that it has heart. The film is actually about something meaningful and the importance of family above all else. I was seriously tearing up during a few scenes and anyone who is a father, husband or has close family will feel the emotion that was on display here. It really caught me off guard as I thought this would be just another typical action movie. What can I say about the fighting? Absolutely incredible, the elevator fight scene and the final fight will be seen as two of the best martial arts sequences ever put on film. If you thought The Raid: Redemption fight scenes were good, these fight scenes top them in every respect. And I love that the Mike Tyson fight is really just a side event fight and not the main event which any other lazy director would have done. I plan to watch this film with my kids because of the great moral lessons taught in this film. Expand

Ip Man fights a dozen men on a stair, fights in a construction area and fights a Muay Thai boxer in a claustrophobic elevator. Rather than just be open areas like the first movie, this movie incorporates different environments to create very unique fight scenes. For example, IP Man uses the hand rails during the stair fight or having him protect his wife during the conflict within the small area of the elevator. It's very creative and also very exhilarating fight scenes. One of the biggest advertisement for this movie was IP Man's fight against Frank played by Mike Tyson and despite being just 3 minutes, the fight is still really amazing. While in IP Man 1 he was invincible and there was no threat in the fights and in IP Man 2 where he actually fought physically struggling fights, IP Man 3 does something different. IP Man is still rather invincible in the fights but its the meaning to these fights that are the real suspense. It's a very interesting way of keeping IP Man as the all-mighty superhero but still, make it seem like he is genuinely in trouble in these fights.

There is also a very interesting rival and antagonist for IP Man in Zhang Jin as Cheung Tin-chi who is also a Wing Chun user. It's not like a lot of the movies in which the antagonist is like the main character but evil, Cheung Tin has a lot of depth to him. He will protect innocent people like IP Man and has someone he cares about but is a lot more aggressive compared to IP Man. Zhang Jin and the action director manages to show this contrast by having IP Man fight with more elegance whereas Cheung Tin with more ferocity even though they use the same fighting style. Cheung Tin is also very sympathetic in that he doesn't get the same respect and recognition as IP Man even when he does a good deed and it plays a part in his jealousy towards IP Man which eventually builds up to an awesome climax fight scene. He is a very interesting character and it is no surprise that he eventually gets his own spinoff movie.

Ip Man himself still manages to get his own character arc in this movie in which the major focus is his relationship with his wife Cheung Wing-sing (Lynn Hung). IP Man throughout the first two movies was mostly calm, modest and restraint but in this movie, we get to see more emotions from him as he has a vastly different struggle compared to the previous two movies. In IP Man 1 he struggled with surviving WWII and in the second movie, he struggled with adapting and physically struggled in fights. In IP Man 3 the struggle is mostly dealing with his fame and his wife's cancer. Unlike the second film where there is a problem, he can fight directly, in IP Man 3 the problem can't be solved by fighting. It gives IP Man a unique character arc in which he doesn't come out by the end of the movie better than before but gaining a new perspective and lesson on what is most important in life. It's why I really enjoyed the second half of this movie with its more emotional scenes which is praise given to Donnie Yen for giving a great performance in these heart wrenching moments. While the second half was great, the first half is not so much. The first half is about dealing with a triad gang working for the antagonist Frank played by Mike Tyson. Firstly, Mike Tyson is not an actor and it really shows in his really cheesy performance. It's even more gear grinding when they make him speak Cantonese and it is just really bad. Secondly, his character is never really explored even though he is the main antagonist for the first half. They don't explain his origins or his motivations whatsoever. It gets really dumb when this whole gang fiasco gets magically resolved somehow by IP Man engaging in a fistfight with Frank which contrasts the whole theme of the second half. It doesn't make any sense but it all just gets resolved and brushed under the rug with no one ever talking about it at all in the second half. There is also this plot thread about Tsui Lik (Louis Cheung) who is a student of IP Man who has feelings for this school teacher which amounts to nothing. It doesn't add anything to the overall narrative but somehow was put in the movie to just pad time. His relationship with IP Man isn't even explored. The plot is stitched together poorly with a bunch of different plot lines somehow all connecting. Cheung's jealously, Triad leader being a student of some martial art master, police corruption, foreigners being in control, Frank in general, Ip Man's wife, Tsui Lik crush are all stitched together in the first half to create a very messy plot which just doesn't work. Thankfully the second half is more focused and consistent.

Overall, I still enjoyed this movie a lot. It's not as bad as many say it is and I think there is a lot of good in it.

I didn't expect this franchise to try something new since we already are at the third instalment of the 'Ip Man' saga. With such low expectations I was not disappointed.

The first scene is really dumb and drafty even if Bruce Lee's lookalike is more than correct. It's a shame that he doesn't appear more in the movie even if he has way more space in 'Ip Man 4: The Finale'. Seeing Mike Tyson in here was a pleasant surprise but his acting is not even better than Donnie Yen's (Ip Man). As Tyson seems to pursue an effortless and predictable acting, Yen in his side is satisfied by its totally boring placidity and emotional impassivity. By the way Tyson's plan (I mean the villain's plan) is really stupid and inconsistent. Several characters with varied bad intentions make the scenario look really drafty and incomplete. In overall the turns of events are truly predictable all along even if the logic of 'Ip Man 3' is quite strange from time to time. Fortunately the scenarists took some time to eventually give some depth to Ip Man's wife who especially appears to be the star of this feature. The plot around her and the couple is interesting and bring some variety in what we are used to see in a 'Ip Man' movie. Some scenes honestly are moving.

However about two thirds of the way through the film the rhythm breaks down and becomes quite annoying. Special effects are okay in general. Some fighting scenes are quite weird even if choregraphies are great. I guess they couldn't prevent themselves to insert some truly ineffective and terrible combat moves here and there.

As always I appreciate the way the movie combines real historic facts and fiction but here it looks like they took too much freedom as some events don't match at all with past reality.
