I loved the first two seasons and felt that season 3 was a bit lacking. The new season is all over the place though. I get that the story needs to spread out and incorporate new characters (and time jumps) to further the story but its just getting ridiculous. The new central narrative focuses on all the new characters and very little on the original cast.

The first two Seasons of Vikings are excellent, Season 3 was mediocre (aside from the siege of Paris), but now Season 4 is, oh boy... The story is all over the place, the Vikings became a supporting cast instead of main characters, and even when the Vikings are on screen, it's just not the same, the magic is gone!

The writing has completely tanked and the storyline has gone to trash. I could write better episodes on my lunch break. All of the good characters have been lost, and those that remain are struggling with the terrible script. Hearing these fake viking accents stumble over words like "probably" and "supposed to" is painful, and the author could have easily avoided this with better writing. The writing has completely tanked and the storyline has gone to trash. Has Hintz hired interns to write these? And now they're even copying game of thrones in many ways, from the design of the throne to Ivar's "wings". Very sad because this was a fun show once upon a time, with an incredible performance by Fimmel. Expand

Well, where to start? Hmm, Season I and II were really good, at least trying to depict the the scandinavians somewhat accurately, although a lot was missing in a historical sense. Still good and entertaning though, with strong characters, some good acting and above all, a proper STORY... Season III, and the show starts to go all downhill. Two good things though.. Season IV, and the show has gone from mediocre to awful. They sort of killed the main characters, in spirit that is, and made them extras in their own show. Who cares about the horribly bad acting "Franks" and "Saxons" and their stupid wifes. The show is called "Vikings", is it not? Misplaced filler lovestories and ridiculous anachronistic scenes with a chinese concubine...!? For real? I guess the show was too popular depicting what people actually want to see, so now they want to kill it off entirely. No, people DO NOT want to see multicultural, falsified history with an obvious agenda of miscrediting scandinavian people, promoting the "higher" monotheistic culture (that I expect will happen soon in the show..) Sadly, I fear it will go from horrible to pure parody as the characters are "developed" into mere cartoonfigures.

From bad to worse, I'm not going to watch anymore. The show is fluff and lies, it's embarrassing that it's on the "History Channel". By fluff I mean pointless things that have no meaning but fill the time. By lies I mean the deliberate misrepresentation of that world - read the sagas, they ELECTED kings! There is no attempt whatsoever at authenticity. And I find it extremely peculiar thatFrom bad to worse, I'm not going to watch anymore. And I find it extremely peculiar that the only Scandinavian actors are cast as villains.

Rome and Black Sails show that authenticity can be achieved even while taking unlimited creative license, but Viking completely fails - it conveys nothing. Black Sails isn't even historical yet captures the world it is based on flawlessly. Tudors shows Hirst is capable of better, so my only conclusion is that his prejudices were incompatible with telling this story honestly.

The only thing obvious from Critic Reviews score is that Variety and Boston Globe reviews are written by bots or lazy or overworked critics that obviously didn't watch the show.

I started watching this series with great hopes, since the period is one of my favorites and this is the "History"channel. What a big disappointment. Besides borrowing some names and pieces of stories from the Volsunga Saga and from the Gesta Danorum, the series has the politics wrong, the ships wrong, the weapons, the armor, wrong. The clothes are ludicrous. Paris is wrong in any possible way. Every historical movie or show has to take liberties, we all expect it. But this is far too much. The church crucified people (not one recorded case), women were not allowed to illuminate (there are whole lists with the names of women that illuminated manuscripts)... I could go on. What is the point of call yourself the History Channel if you do not give a... peanut about history? Expand

Enjoyed the show until the porn scenes. I don't watch porn, don't wish to watch it, especially on TV shows. I accidentally posted this in season 3, which I was very tempted to stop watching due to the sex scenes, but after the latest episode tonight, I gave up on it. Didn't finish watching the show.

It’s consistently well-made, entertaining, and held aloft by thought-provoking ideas.

Most impressively, Vikings captures the grim reality of these times and the limitations of these characters--barbarous, superstitious creatures that they are--in a manner that draws one into their world without necessarily evoking sympathy for it. And even the ostensible good guys, like Ragnar, are prone to do very bad things, without making them any less watchable.
