Perhaps Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will eventually find a way to be a show worthy of all this talk and expectation, rather than the B-/C+ attempt at a network show that Fey and Carlock have delivered. There’s not much special about it, so far, except the lucky circumstances of its survival.

There are plenty of typical sitcom misunderstandings and miscommunications, and some of the humor is disappointingly tame coming from Fey and Carlock. But the looming darkness is what makes Unbreakable worth watching.

The net effect, though, has a slightly tired feel to it--or at least, one that doesn’t feel wholly worthy of Netflix’s premium-TV niche. Indeed, in terms of laughs, the show essentially peaks in its first few minutes.

It seems like its target audience is adults, but the style of humor is reminiscent of something on the Disney channel. It's quirky, full of energy, and occasionally very funny, but I generally don't appreciate intentionally bad puns, which this show relies on heavily. The characters are also extremely one-sided and animated. I understand that's part of the effect they're going for, but honestly, every character annoys me to some extent, and they're all just really, really stupid. Maybe it's just my preference, but I think comedy is best when it exaggerates real life while still maintaining some level of believability. This show, however, relies too much on extreme caricatures of real people making inane decisions. I'm sure some people find that hilarious, but most of the time I think it's cringeworthy. The humor is almost as "unbreakable" as it's protagonist. The jokes are diverse and occur at an almost non-stop rate. Not all of them knock it out of the park, but I still found myself laughing a lot.

The characters and situations are odd. That not only amplifies the humor, but the charm as well. These first 13 episodes have been a real treat and I can't wait for more in the future. The repetition of the lessons it tries to teach is noticeable and I wish certain characters would have stuck around longer (humorous side-characters leave just as quickly as they arrive), but that doesn't stop this from being a great first outing for Kimmy Schmidt. There's plenty of charm and laughs to find with this show.
