It gets painfully uncomfortable, particularly in the two “Covenant” episodes, but although “trauma porn” is often used to describe such renderings, there is nothing gratuitous or pornographic in its depictions of Black trauma. The first few episodes of “THEM” are the strongest and sharpest, diving headlong into the fragile mental states of both Henry and Lucky, while also dealing with the issues their children face. However, over the course of the show’s 10 episodes, the proceedings begin to drag. ... Though it doesn’t lose sight of racism exactly, the show’s mind seems more firmly placed on the ways in which it might make us jump than make us think or feel. It’s an unfortunate reversal of the way series that look like it use genre to investigate race: “Them,” in the end, takes the far less interesting path of using race to investigate genre. Them primarily feels empty during the first half of its run. But episode five, “Covenant I” — which is, notably, directed by the show’s only Black director, Zola’s Janicza Bravo — turns the show from a grating, hollow depiction of Blackness in America to one that revels in degrading its Black characters in a way that left me questioning both the Black creators involved and the studio system that is eager for this kind of work. The series was a great story of real life migration for black americans with a twist of Horror that relly touches black american viewers. Most of the negative reviews are purely because it touched an emotional trigger with black americans that feel the idea of 'black trauma porn' isThe series was a great story of real life migration for black americans with a twist of Horror that relly touches black american viewers. Most of the negative reviews are purely because it touched an emotional trigger with black americans that feel the idea of 'black trauma porn' is offensive to them and dont wantto experience watching lback people murdered anymore. I can totally undestand BUT as a black man myself I want non viewers to see themselves in this light. To see the trauma that actually existed. This is different from most movies that just kill black people with no regard. There is true context in this story of why we as black Americans cant just accept America, because in it's total history it never really accepted us. It pulled an emotional response out of many of it's viewers and that alone should be a tell sign that it actually did a good job at telling the story and being a TRUE horror story for black Americans and a cautionary tale for white Americans to how we got here.… Expand

The show is horrifying. The cast shines like the sun on an already perfect world. The story is clear and makes sense. The racism is horrifying the ghosts are also horrifying. The show is plain win for the horror genre. I don’t know if I have been this effected by a show of film for a while.

It’s amazing but not surprising of the negative reviews like any other reviews, status, award, or any accomplishment controlled by white audience and white platforms. So many black movies and black actors never get their flowers and as showcased in this series, no matter where you live, go,It’s amazing but not surprising of the negative reviews like any other reviews, status, award, or any accomplishment controlled by white audience and white platforms. So many black movies and black actors never get their flowers and as showcased in this series, no matter where you live, go, or what class or stature you carry as a black person, you are not invited, accepted, or seen as equals in this nation, even today! This show is epic in so many ways that it gives a mental, physical, spiritual, out of body, and supernatural approach to the reality of black people! The acting, theme, story, realness plot, and attempt to give an authentic and surreal experience will miss the mark for the obvious to the same people the serious is TRULY ABOUT! THEM!… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Promising but coulda trimmed it down to 5 episodes or tossed in more juice. Like What? I’m not sure just feel like something was missing! Great performances by all actors! A horrifying twist on racism. Yes similar to Lovecraft and Us but isn’t that Hollywood at every corner... copy n paste ?! Socially and economically historically accurate from my research (even the pledge of allegiance) taking place in 1953. The added splash of complex subtle humor (white Compton) mixes well with the reality of that time. Making the supernatural horrors far more spooky! Being white and from SoCal, I never really knew what racism even was until we moved in the late 80s. So I pay close attention to these types of social issue movies n shows. Not to feel lower about my own race but to gain perspective. And having this in horror flicks!!? Woo ! thanks to JPeele for getting the ball rolling!!… Expand

I thought the acting, cinematography, production design were all top notch and so I'll give a few positive stars for that. But as for the show itself I went into it thinking it was going to be sort of a twilight zone/horror show. But what disappointed me was it just seemed like a big corporation (Amazon) trying to exploit a terrible and tragic situation in the the US for profit for what they think is would sell right now.
Racism should be the topic of serious discussion not for ratings and selling advertising space for Amazon Prime memberships.… Expand

BOOOOORIIIINNGGGG. there should be 2 episodes instead of 10. quite empty and it was full of emotional abuse. please do not make public service broadcasting like series anymore in 2021.

To the reviewers stating that the negative reviews are because people are somehow against black actors, black shows, and black movies....I say WOW. I can list a great number of very popular black actors, films, and shows; the problem is in the fact that the last few years have basically hadTo the reviewers stating that the negative reviews are because people are somehow against black actors, black shows, and black movies....I say WOW. I can list a great number of very popular black actors, films, and shows; the problem is in the fact that the last few years have basically had black Hollywood to exclusively address the witch problem...oh sorry, I mean the racism problem. And isn't it funny how in order to fight racism, you have to attack an entire race (white people)? I am sick and tired of it and I am waiting for the rest of society to be sick and tired of it too. I hope this show fails because it deserves to fail. Not only is it racially divisive, it is just not enjoyable.… Expand
