BUT, this season had major deviations from the book (and not for the better) and worse than that, Vesemir and Yennefer acted out of character, moreover Yen's made up story arc was uninspired and cliché.
The writing and dialogues were stupid, cringe and out of place a good couple of times.
And the ending.. like WTF? Literally nothing in the last episode was from the book this season was based on (Blood of Elves), the story the creators made up was just an unimpactful mess, that did not add any real value to the whole, while they left out important relationship moments between certain characters. They also made a big reveal at the very end of the last episode, but it was something that should've been secret until the last book/season.. and the way it happened will most likely ruin how the stories of the characters will lead to where they're supposed to.
Oh and the unique Slavic/eastern European vibe is now totally gone, and turned into a generic, Americanized pile of c..
This show has become a display of the "I know better"-attitude from the showrunner's and the writers part, but they do NOT know better, it's just ego and arrogance. Don't fix what's not broken.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This season builds on the one before but the problem is season 1 was a mess. The best episode this season was its pilot. And the end plot twist could've also been done better. Since the end fight with the demon lady just fails to make any sense. Setting aside all these issues the actors did a great job seeing as they are honestly passionate about this show. The best element of this show is its sceneries. Expand

Even genres - sci-fi and fantasy, that skirt the confines of our imaginations are not exempt from this. Season 2 Witcher excelled in this. It dealt with Ciri’s reluctance, the burning need to flee from the truth about herself (her quest for something other than what she truly is, her desires to learn the sword, her desires to be a great fighter, her even more damning desire of wanting to be a Witcher). It reeked of escapism. Anything to deny the past that haunts her still. Her fear, her denial defined her. Geralt’s thread is singular, one pulled taut during the fading embers of the prior season. He has come to rue his initial forsaking of destiny. For the character whose name is on the door, his storyline emerges as the dullest of the characters. But this is deliberate and it is obvious Mr Cavill played his role to the T. Just as diehard fan of the game would have loved.

This season adds colour to fringe characters. Turns wooden elements into bundles of flesh brimming with mixed emotions. It showcased faith v personal ambition. (Fringilla). Highlighted the pain of maternal loss (Francesca). Accentuated Yennefer’s hunger for relevance even at the expense of her grey morals. In the end The Witcher 2 is ticks all the right boxes. It is a resounding 8 for me.

Nothing special! Avarage on everything. The first season had some character and it was worth to watch. There was great music, deep character stories, variety of original monsters, amazing places and costumes and furthermore every detail were sexy and charismatic. There is none of them in the second season. It feels like a stretched 2nd class movie not a full season series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watched both seasons. Read the books and played the games. I loved them both. I heard they didn't intend to adapt the games, which I thought was a good decision. The books are solid enough on their own.

First, the positives. When adapting specific bits from the books, this show is fantastic. Although it starts rough, the more immersed you get in the universe, the less noticeable some of the bad acting becomes. For season 2, it's probably genuinely good for most people with no background in the Witcher (books or games).

    Cons.

The timeline of season 1 was mishandled and unnecessary. I get it. They were adapting two books based that were collections of short stories. But rather than accepting the challenge and telling a coherent story, the writer's cheaply went for the "it's all different timelines" gimmick. Still, get through the first 3 episodes and season 1 was enjoyable. If I recall correctly, 2 episodes were mostly made up of content that was not in the books. However, not a huge concern as the events of these episodes were events that did occur or were hinted at in the Witcher books.

Season 2 has me at a loss for words. The content was solid if you haven't read the books. However, I understand the concern/frustration by people who have read the books. There was so much additional content. I'm comfortable saying 80% of the content was not in the books (or the games). Considering there were 5 more books to adapt, plus a slew of unadapted short stories from the first 2 books, I don't know why new content was deemed necessary. This is incredibly unusual as most movies/TV shows based on books get into hot water for cutting content rather than adding unnecessary content. There are also some concerning deviations from the books - that started really in season 1. These can still be redeemed, but looking back on previous seasons will make little sense if/when redemption occurs. On that note, I'm incredibly concerned with the future of the show. Between the new content and deviations, it seems like they are telling a story in the Witcher universe with the same characters from the books that's just close enough to the books to maintain the "based on The Witcher books" without actually bringing this magnificent tale to life - which is what the fans of the books were excited to see. Lastly - and again, probably not a huge concern for people who didn't read the books - the season 2 finale twist was very disappointing to see. This twist isn't revealed until near the end of the final book. It was a huge moment that explained so many past events and gave a third dimension to Nilfgaard's invasion of the North/Cintra. Not sure how the writer's intend to maintain relevance of this huge reveal over the remainder of the show. Again, it feels like a cheap trick by the writer's that will ultimately look wasted later on (as I think things will for a few characters that are being incorrectly written based on their character arcs in the books).

Ultimately, I still give it a 6 out of 10. It's still watchable. It's not doing a good job of bringing to life the characters and events laid out in the books. However, it's introducing new people to this universe and the quality of season 2 was much more consistent than season 1.

One last thought: The show runner says Eredin is going to be the "Thanos" of the Witcher universe. Please stop. He's far more relevant in the Witcher 3 video game than the books. In fact, he's barely in the books. Eredin is still a huge threat. He doesn't orchestrate anything. He interacts with Ciri but not Geralt or Yennefer. He's fairly one-dimensional. I don't recall him ever even making it to the same realm as the Continent. There is another character in the books that's pulling all of the strings and is incredibly formidable. Focus on being faithful to that "big bad" and you'll have a complex, brilliant show.

I've read the books, and I've just finished up Season 2, and I have to say I'm really impressed with both. Both are works of art in their own right. It is true that the show deviates from the books in a few areas, but I think that is the point of art. If you don't interpret and make it something new, nothing is gained. I thought the show was spectacularly acted, the plot was really engaging in new ways, and its inspired me to go back to the books because the world, the lore, and the characters are so interesting.

At the end of the day, the show is fantastic. I hope it inspires a new generation of readers to pick up Sapkowski's books, and CD Projekt Red's games. It's quite an amazing universe they've built, and I can't wait to see what they've got lined up next.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Even if we pretend the show is something on its own and has nothing to do with the source material, its still a bad show.

-ACTING: Other than Geralt and Jaskier everything else was bad to mediocre. No joke, Fringilla is the worst actor I have ever seen. She has the same dead emotionless face throughout the whole show.

-WRITING: Absolutely terrible, weird unnatural and cringe dialogues (with a few exceptions) and a story full of plot-holes and holywood cliches. The pacing of the series is horendous. I am sure like at least half of the people who watched the show have no idea wtf is going on with the politics, the mages, the races and stuff cause the writing is so weird and confusing you dont even bother trying to anderstand.

-CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: Absolutely trash for the most part. Yen spends the whole season trying to get her powers back and is willing to secrifice Ciri to a **** demon. Then we have Vesimir, who has zero personality in the show and is portrayed as an old weak dumb Witcher who has no idea what he is doing, then for some reason he wants to use Ciri as a blood vessel to make new generation of Witchers and doesn't mind **** poisoning Ciri to see if works? Triss ,after all the bonding scenes with Ciri, is disgusted with her all of a sudden because she is powerfull? Also Geralt uses Ciri as bait at some point? Like wtf is this? All the other characters (except Jaskier) have no character development or personalitty. Tell me do you even care about any of the characters of the show other than Geralt, Jaskier and Ciri?

-PRODUCTION: Other than some landscape shots, maybe Kaer Morhen and the city which looked pretty good everything else is laughable. Like seriously can't they afford some qualitty contact lenses instead of using the 2$ version from Walmart? Also the costumes look like they came out of a fairy tale Barbie show. They look super clean and fancy and that makes it super akward to watch. Some special effects also looked so so weird and badly made. Like when Geralt chopped the head of that monster and it rolled in front of the camera or when Geralt punched a dude's tooth off.

-ACTION: How much action was there? Like 4-5 scenes in the whole season 2? And were they even mindblowing or something? No, they were just ok.

I would give the show a 6 or maybe an overated 7, but if you watch this show having in mind the source material the books and the games this is a 3-4.

It's a shame cause Henry is a great actor and a really good Geralt but almost everything around it is just bad. Don't even know if I will watch season 3, probably not.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Even after only watching until episode 5 i can already tell where Netflix is taking the series... The episodes so far have been pretty boring for the most part, the only characters that are kind of interesting are Geralt and Ciri. I couldn't care less about Yennefer's storyline, it's a shame what they did to her, her character had so much potential. Apart from that there are small (but noticeable) logical flaws throughout the season so far. For example characters that are supposed to be dead are suddenly... not dead anymore?? And why is it proof that if Yennefer kills some random nilfgaardian knight in front of everybody that she's not spying for Nilfgaard?
Many things aren't explained very well or not at all; it's hard to see a meaning behind a lot of decisions characters make or how things eventually turn out.
I expected a lot more tbh but then again... it's Netflix. And Netflix tends to ruin quite a lot of series after the first season, mainly due to a "woke" or in this case just a bad script.

I think, especially in contrast to Season 1, S2 is amazing and delightful. The haters miss that The Witcher world and mythos made the story special, not the reverse. The show perfectly protects and projects the gnarled gritty heart of why we love The Witcher, while remaining true to the overall arc. The true crime committed and shame is the haters unable to understand these cosmetic plot changes augment the authentic archetypal beauty behind the series. The arc of the narrative and it's form (short stories, novels, POVs) is disjointed in the books, and as we saw in season one that doesn't translate well to the screen. The superficial plot changes serve to incorporate the world in a way that serves the arc- or at worst is entertaining without hurting it. Sadly, haters miss out on this in order to nitpick. Also, let me say I've read the books more than a few times, to establish my cred to criticize the critics here. Expand

For the first half of the season I was totally confused about what's going on, who all these people are and what they want. By the end of the season you have a better idea, but then I was rather annoyed by the cheap B movie narratives and the shallow and unconsistent characters. All woman suddenly find their soft spot and become nice. Geralt becomes almost boring in his flat good guy role.

Special effects are much better than in the first season. But this doesn't help if the story is not interesting. This series lost me, I probably won't watch a third season.

Knowingly making huge adjustments from the source material when a good proportion of the fans have been brought in due to that source material Seems foolish. it makes a disconnect between the material and the show thus meaning that the show must fall back on its simple quality.
Here it isn't all bad, because of noticeable improvements in acting, costume design, set design and visual effects, meaning it doesn't fall flat on its face.
Reading the reasoning behind an unexpected death in the series, probably the most notable change from the source material doesn't provide any clarity.
It just seems that they were unable to do proper character development and fell back on people knowing the character from the source material and the games to make that death more impactful.
Though season 1 was a testament to character development especially for Yennefer It's absent here.
Although, it's still entertaining and will bring in the views. The showrunners seem to have divided its view base to no clear gain.

Season 2 does an excellent job of fixing whatever season 1 slightly confusing with the different timelines much like westworld (which didn't bother me, but I get why some people I talked to didn't like that), they fixed the characters so they look more like what I was familiar with. Henry Cavill is still perfect as Geralt. He also talks more now which is a welcome change. Freya Allan as Ciri is starting to fit her role. She is gorgeously badass but there are still scenes where her acting seems a bit dry. I like Jaskier's songs here. The CGI and fight scenes are nice. I still hate how the writers make up their own **** Seriously? Ciri will burst this world in flames? She's supposed to end everything in Frost. None of that is present here and none of the overall solid acting and set-design can gloss over that.

The show really needs to do a better job at establishing the different kingdoms, their relationship to one another, their different leaders and their respective agendas, a clear explanation on the rules and limitations of magic and what is at stake.

Without this ground work, it won't ever live up (or even improve) on the source material.

But I started to like some of those Aretuza characters (mainly just Fringilla) in season 2. I wish there were more episodes in a season to get more monster hunting/Geralt stuff. You have Henry Cavill who is perfect for the role. Don’t waste that. Give me more of season 2 episode 1 type of episodes.

Netflix will never give this show the budget it deserves because they have a formula that every show is going to follow, for max profitability. Netflix should never have taken on the Witcher if that was their plan for this.
