OK, I admit I'm a huge fan of the original book series. I loved the games too. But I'm not judging the season just on its differences vs. the source material. I can also accept some alterations to the main storyline to make it more "compact" or "robust" (althoughOK, I admit I'm a huge fan of the original book series. I loved the games too. I can also accept some alterations to the main storyline to make it more "compact" or "robust" (although after timeline magic confusing to people not knowing the original books I wouldn't say the show creators cared about it much).
But my problem (and not only mine - my wife who knows only some of the first short stories agrees with me completely) lies elsewhere. The writing is so absurd and chaotic that you scratch your head and murmur "wtf?".
The first season parasited on the source material and pushed woke culture on us but at least the main characters had _some_ character.
In season 2 the writing is so off that you no longer know what the hell is going on, who's where and where this where is, characters meet at random and noone knows why... the list goes on and on. It's no longer the original saga based on greatly written characters - there's almost none of that left. It's not even a hack and slash show. It's some weird GoT wannabe written probably by some interns.
The only thing I liked about the show was the visuals. I liked the cyan-yellow colour range, I like the lighting in most of the shots. It was pleasing to watch. But that's all.
    I didn't like Geralt's new contact lenses!

I have a big grudge against the creators of this series, the source material was treated by them without respect and understanding, there are no emotions between the characters, only pompous lines spoken to each other...no world building... they took the easy way and made a generic fantasy series without the depth of source material

This is pure crap. The new story is just boring and stupid, it might be acceptable if it weren't for the original stories which are there for the taking, but they decided to go their own way which is very bad. You had one job Netflix, and you failed.

The only way season 3 might recover from this is that the season 2 was just a nightmare that Geralt was having, he wakes up and says

There was one thing that Made The Witch Season one good, Henry Cavil as Geralt , every gruff word, every sword fight ,was compelling and entertaining. Henry gave his all for the performance and pulled of The Witcher perfectly.. The show was riddled with other issues , but Henry made it great.
SOOOOO what do they do in the Second season??? Focus of the female side characters!!!! It is 2021

It is quite difficult to watch if you read the book. Main characters are missing depth and motivation for their actions. The main story from the book is simplified but idiotic new story is introduced. What is Baba Yaga doing here? She is from Russian tales, probably they read the wrong books by mistake.

Witcher in name only. This does not have anything to do with the books or games. The intersectional feminism and bad CGI duel for being the worst part of the show, but are just elements of the entire team making this. They chose to corrupt a great story just for their own person agenda like a cultural cancer.

Season 2 is bad. Save for episode 01. Also for Geralt and Ciri, both actors fill their roles perfectly.
My two cents, the series is called The Witcher, so put more witcher in it. Also, there is no need to censor boobs in a TV show not aimed for children. Finally, the author of the books and the developers of the games wrote interesting stories, why don't you bring those to the screen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s just bad. I read all book and payed games long before the series. Creators told us about books but the series has nothing to do with them. Terrible attitude of the authors. Many illogical moments in the script. Very bad graphics. The death of Eskel, constant teleports of the characters over long distances, the loss of Yennifer's magical abilities, and so on, much can be said. I am very sorry that my favorite universe was destroyed in Netflix’s creation. After watching the eighth series I was extremely disappointed and there was only one thought “Just how? How?”. Only people that didn’t read books or played games can barely enjoy the series. But even as a stand-alone product it’s awful. Of course 140 million views (2 minutes of watching counts as view already lol) is an indication of good job (no). Funny that nothing will change and they will continue to make another strange things in their series. Expand

Contrary to the books, they created an incoherent world filled with shallow characters. The writing and pacing is terrible. The show is all over the place as they try to squeeze in as much as they can in too few episodes instead of focusing on the main aspects of the story. It results in cheap shortcuts, lack of character development, lack of context of many scenes, superfluous side stories that don’t make sense when it’s not straightforward butchery of the books and characters. I understand taking liberties from the source material when you adapt a book to make a tv show but here is it done very poorly and it doesn’t make sense.

Netflix likes to "consult the algorithm" and see how many random demographics they can attract while making the show just good enough to be not good but passable. you would think with GoT being so huge and LotR being the best trilogy of all time they'd actually hire someone who isn't a dullard to make the show. some of the acting is so bad my head hurt as I thought I was in some sort of distorted mental hell but realized this is just the current state of tv. they should have just given geralt blue hair, made him trans, and then cast anyone from a google search of "woke actors" and called it complete because they're not far off. dummy bird brain **** for little guys.

All what was good in season 1, season 2 is lacking. Yes few things improved like CGI, costumes but that is all. After 1 episode of season 2 i was exited, yes they change a lot but it felt ok and I was hoping for more. However, the following episodes were some kind of misunderstanding. All characters except Geralt and Jaskier depict completely different characters that have nothing to do with Sapokowski's prose. The same goes for the story, the writers stick to the overall frame of the story, but at the same time turn everything else into empty and weak stories. When Henry Cavill who is a huge fan of the witcher world, in interviews says that he had to intervene in order to smuggle more Geralt from book, you should know that something is going wrong with the show. If in subsequent seasons they continue to maintain the level of departure from the source material and a simultaneous misunderstanding of it, the series will be a disaster or another weak Netflix adaptation.

But instead of adapting the source, the authors consciously decided to use a famous franchise to tell their own (very mediocre) story.

Even if we put aside that the series is not true to the source, the show completely flops as a standalone material. Character plotlines are completely made up and lack motivation, the pacing is so chaotic that trying to figure out what's happening is exhausting, and there is no logic in character dialogues or actions whatsoever.

When the show was announced, it was expected to be a successor to the Game of Thrones in the fantasy genre. The books and games proved it has such potential. With Netflix's budget baking up the series, it had everything necessary to define the genre... besides the showrunner who would love the world and the characters as the fans do. Unfortunately, it is not the case.

    As another reviewer here mentioned:
"Everything that I loved was worn out and mutilated before my eyes. For those who have read books, it will be very painful to look at it. I have one question: Lauren, why did you treat us so cruelly?"

I sign under every word. Us, fans, had one chance for the true TV adaptation of the story and characters we love. There will be no other series, not after this disaster the show turned out to be. Why Lauren? You just had to adapt what was already there. Did you think that you may handle twisting the characters so badly to push whatever agenda you had instead? Well, that didn't work out. Crafting a cohesive story requires some storytelling skill, so it would be better for us all if you just stuck to the source.

Well....Henry did a good job to interprète Gerald, thank you for that....but the show is garbage, why ? because it's not an adaptation, it's an interpretation, a fanfiction. The story, character background and personality are changed so deeply that is not The Witcher story anymore, 90% off the show is a total rewrite and never happened in the book and it's not even a good rewrite : so generic, boring and lazy fantazy stuff with many fail in narrative schem or events.

Let take few exemple (spoil alert) : - Yennefer saving Cahir in front of many magiciens and kings of the north with all their guards because of (????) ....nobody do anithing to stop Yen, she just run away so easly that is just....THE POWER OF THE SCENARII
-Vesemir wanted to made more witcher, seeing the new generic witcher being killed so easly, getting mad about the possessed ciri and try to kill her....and 2 min later totaly forget about all of that because of THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP....What a bipolar character !!!!

    - The evil cabin in the wood sorceress who manipulate powerfull sorceress to being deliver to take possession of Ciri (one of the main character) to make them kill eachother but fail because of THE POWER OF MAIN CHARACTERE.....

ARGGG COM ON !!!! and there is a planty of moment like that

If anyone expects to see in this thing... a good Witcher story in a cruel, racist, greyish world full of deep moral dilemmas and intrigues, it is better not to even start it, and best to forget that such a thing was ever made.
The plot is completely chaotic and nonsensical, while the first episode is quite good, the following episodes make people completely brainless (do you really have to explain every emotion and event to the viewer because the viewer is, according to them, so dumb that he does not understand it?). Construction of characters and the world does not exist, it lacks any authenticity, the kings are shown as total pigs without brains, generally the image of the world saying "look how patriarchal and chauvinistic it is, but women are strong and the greatest" and probably that's all that **** focused on, but the best thing is this, But the best part is that the effect is completely opposite, as a viewer it felt like the women in this fanfic were ridiculed, shown in the most stereotypical way possible, devoid of any elegance, seriousness, calculating and intelligence that in the book basically controlled the world from the back seat. This series only leaves some of the more clever donkeys in the form of women further portraying them as annoying mood swings. Also if Lauren's goal was to promote strong women then something went wrong.
Another issue regarding world building is. the distance, all the scenes feel like they're just across town. For the uninitiated, kaer morhen was far to the north in the keadween, the only people who knew the way there were the witchers of the wolf school and those to whom the witchers had told the location of their habitat, the rest of us could not have known, but anyway it took months to get to kaer morhen from cintra, and according to the series it was a small castle maybe 20 minutes away from the larger cities that even the whores knew the way to.
All of the above are just the tip of the iceberg of **** that this series is. Lauren is telling fans of the books and games that she doesn't care about their opinions, that she doesn't care about making a good series based on the book and keeping the level. It was created by a person who doesn't understand the Witcher phenomenon, doesn't understand why people love it so much, she despises the source material, doesn't give a damn whether it's going to be good or not, it's obvious that she has no idea what this world looks like, so she created another generic fantasy series as if it was based on Xene or Hercules but with the Witcher tag attached to it, so it's just a cash grab and it's just a way to kill the popularity of the title.

The good part is of course Henry trying to save it as much as he can, but he can't do it. The special effects are also on a good level, and that's about it, because everything else is hopeless if you still call it The Witcher, but if you call it something else and don't refer to the world of The Witcher then it's just a generic fantasy series that you can play in the background.

A gruesome creation that slays the beautiful legacy of the book and game series. The authors simply mastered the money allocated for the series, simulated the workflow. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all I have to say I have read the books, so it will be hard not to compare the series to them.
But as the creators promised to stay close to the originals, it's only just and reasonable to do so.
I don't care for all the diverse cast changes, women in charge and wokeness stuff people complain about. If the actors get a good script and do it right, I'm fine. I would be glad if the show's only problem for me would be some forced real world politics and characters that don't fit my personal imagination.

Leaving this aside, the show is a very bad piece of generic fantasy writing with awful pacing, logical errors, dull dialogues, bad jokes and (mostly) uninspired cast. I wonder how people can not see that and pretend it's a great show? I have spoken to some friends that have never read the books but watched season 2 and wondered why it's such a piece of trash. When I asked them what they think, they answered: it must have been written that way in the original books...

The script is so horrible, I don't know where to start. I can live with the decision to deviate from the books because it's a TV show, they didn't have time and money to show everything to us or else.
So create something exciting. Something that fits into the world and makes the characters shine. No, they failed and we got awful storylines.
They have ripped out good and coherent parts of the original story and replaced them with made up, unpolished and forced "ideas".
The confusing multiple timelines storytelling from season 1 was replaced with ridiculous fast-travel where the protagonists jump from one city to another in seconds.
The huge world created in season 1 suffers badly from this, you have to guess hard if scene take place in Cintra, Oxenfurt or Nilfgaard - everything looks the same and is only a day's ride away. Does it even matter? Everything could have taken place in the same town. This reminds me of the final seasons of GoT, when the world was shrunk, so the protagonists could move from one part of the continent to another in the blink of an eye. There are even two saddled horses ready for Yen and Ciri after they teleported to the hut - how convenient, luckily they didn't starve to death after their owners were killed weeks ago.
The remote and secret Kaer Morhen has been transformed into a clubhouse where wandering whores and teleporting mages stream in and out? What the hell?!?

Some scenes are bare of any logic: How did Rience know where to teleport to find Ciri? Why did he imediatelly knew to take the new created witcher-potion? Yen helps Cahir to escape, but no one even tries to stop them. There are no guards in a place where all northen kings meet, and all the master mages are so surprised they forgot how to cast spells.
The actors, except HC who IS Geralt, hardly try to breathe life into their characters. Ciri wears tons of make-up whether in training or wandering in the woods.
Characters have been changed in such a way they don't even deserve the names of the originals. Vesimir and all the witchers are a good example - pathetic.
Scenes that were meant to be emotional and forge bonds between the characters are lifeless and spoiled with stupid jokes (Ciris nightmares in episode 1).
Even the nice locations lose their beauty if actors pretend to walk in a cold winter night seeking shelter from a snowstorm but wearing a shirt and a gown.
The dialogues are childish, written by immature writers for an immature audience. Dialogues consist mostly of explaining the confusing story, bad jokes or swearing.

In my opinion, they missed a great chance to bring the Witcher universe to the screen. It's a pity, because there was much hope after season 1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The director and screenwriters decided to imagine that they are better writers than Sapkowski, so they decided to radically change an excellent story and make THEIR CREATION. Geralt all season does nothing but talking to much (according to his statements, one might think that he is a philosopher), it seems that in the Netflix series, his main vocation is not to kill monsters, but to talk. There is practically no fight, they look inorganic, the stories are fictional (the arc with Ciri is just a laughing stock, they invented some kind of ancient old witch who was nowhere else, told us a meanless story about Fringilla, which does not affect the on the plot in any way, invented monoliths with monsters, oh gods you are just "great" writers, you've created what we never seen at Witcher's books and games.
Key characters (Eskel, Myszowór) have already been killed in two seasons. How Eskel was killed - oh, what an absurdity it is, supposedly he got infected from Leshy and became Leshy. Do you even know why witchers are tested with herbs? They are immune, and can never be infected from monsters and become monsters. (vampires, brooks, Leshys, and so on) They came up with an uninteresting story with Yennefer, made all the sorceresses unattractive (which fundamentally contradicts the book, where they made beauties out of themselves with magic, specially).
And God, why did you put a 20-year-old guy in the role of Emhyr? Do you even understand that he must be 40 years old as least? By adding stubble, you haven't made it look older, because in the scene before, he was a 20 year old boy!
Liberal elves - a separate chapter in this absurdity invented by the director and screenwriters. Why would the elves changed their skin color? Why do the inhabitants of the Arabian East and Africa play elves?

Just 0 out of 10, absolutely deserved, as the authors think they are better writers than the author of the original story. Everything was rewritten, everything was changed from original The Witcher.

Amazing how my critical reviews of woke political nonsense movies and shows get deleted, but thousands of 10/10 bots supporting this trash do not.

Season 2 improves over season 1 in one singular aspect, CGI got a decent upgrade. Everything else is a downgrade. Episode 1, which was based on a short story within Spakowski's novel called "Grain of Truth" was the only episode in this throwaway of a season that has any relevance or faithfulness to the source material. The love story between Nivellen & Vereena is one of those parts of a book that become memorable years after reading it, and while the show does a good job of depicting it, there are even a few errors and missing elements (albeit forgivable ones) that take away from the darkness of it all.

After that, the creator takes the show in a completely different direction, a story she feels she needs to tell. Problem is, your audience isn't a bunch of progressive sissies without an ounce of comprehension or understanding for narrative storytelling... your audience are loyal fans of Sapkowski's work, whether by his books or CDPR's adaptation of the games, you did not earn this fanbase or following, what you did is get thrown into a position you have no business being in because you are a progressive female "producer" and coast on the coattails of a writer that actually possesses talent.

You are the female version of DB Weiss & David Benioff, except you are starting at Season 8 of GoT and pulling the IP down with you. Henry Cavill is the only saving grace from this disaster you call an "adaptation", and when he has to step in and remind you that Geralt is the main character and should probably show up on the screen more often, perhaps it is time to acknowledge that you lied when you said you were going to "remain faithful to the source material”. The diversity casting, altered characters, awful pacing, terrible storytelling, political injections, and even this user score and universal condemnation from the community, tell me you are not a “Witcher fan”.

Step down, delete this abomination, keep Cavill, hand the keys to HBO or someone with some sense of awareness, and go make your own IP with your own ideas and let us know how that works out. The only reason this show has not been canned is because of the gigantic fan base and its loyalty, again, something you did not earn. Oh, and this upcoming spinoff? Cancel it. Nobody cares about your diversity hire fan fiction.

    + CGI improvement
+ Henry Cavill is an excellent Geralt and actually cares

    - Terrible writing
    - Terrible casting (outside of Geralt & Dijkstra)
    - Character portrayals are inaccurate
    - Source material abandoned
    - Contrived plot that is a jumbled mess
    - Story is riddled with plot holes and none of the plots make sense
    - Diversity casting makes no sense for the relations in the narrative
    - Creator's political views are pushing important characters to the side
    - Pacing is all over the pace, show gets really boring
    - Another beloved IP torched by Netflix

Overall, it is what you have come to expect from Netflix shows & showrunners, talentless hacks that have no business being in the position they are in and decimating beloved IPs in the name of political positions and money. Originally a 2/10, but Metacritic deletes my reviews because they have progressive bot moderators who delete well-deserved criticism, here’s a zero.

It feels rushes, the worldbuilding is almost non existent. All different cities in different kingdoms feel culturally the same. Dialogues are more a generic declaration of intents by the characters, rather than confrontations on issues or feelings. Travelling feels like teleportation, and the whole pacing is off. Rushed, almost like the showrunner is afraid of boring the viewer. They are treating this show as a generic teen fantasy made for CW, rather than the mature dark fantasy it's supposed to be. The Sapkowski's saga is one where the characters take center stage and drive the plot forwards. But this show doesn't take its time to establish the characterizations of its characters and their relationships with each other. In some way, it's reaping the fruits of what they did in Season 1. Skipping important character moments to rush the story forward.

Season 3 cannot save this, because the entire show is build on rotten foundations. A terrible show, and a terrible disappointment.

    Garbage.
First season at least tried to be a "Witcher", now it's just another generic netflix fantasy series.

Netflix, why has it got to be this way? I feel sorry for Henry Cavil & Freya Allan who were great in their roles.
But how can you possibly make the Witcher boring as hell? Way too much time given to secondary characters, or if they are not secondary, they are actors with zero charisma to hold your attention. Fringilla, the Elves, Aretuza all had me checking my phone (and I never do that!)

Maybe it was the very poor writing which seemed to make everyone behave very one dimensionally.

    Yennifer - Ruined
    Vesimerir - an idiot
The haunting Slavic/Celtic music - Gone!

Someone else mentioned this, that key to the characters that is they are loyal to Geralt. He has earned this loyalty by being the man we know and love. To think that Yennifer or Vesimerir of all people would put Ciri (his daughter basically) in harms way is ludicrous!

That's ruined those character interactions for me, how can Geralt ever trust them again?

I will say episode one was good, it felt like how the Witcher universe should feel, but that was a one off. The rest of the season felt like it was made but a completely different team.

I don’t understand it! I loved season one.

I did notice the scene when Jaskier was sneaking onto the ship, and there was a telling comment along the lines of “that if you don’t like my entertainment, create your own”.

Gives us some indication that the writers seem to be more interested in fighting a culture war, rather than creating a great TV series.

Yet another atrocity. They really loosely used books. Changing the meaning of stories, added more and more. The script is really bad, dialogs are horrible, characters are butchered. Dialogs are written once in the tones of fantasy and in other times modern talk. The political correctness that changed the plot and characters in season one now just makes it unwatchable. The story of Ciri was a story of a child and clearly here she is a woman. I do not see redemption for this series. I like Henry but he should know better not to be part of this atrocity. Expand

It can't be adaptation because it's not a Witcher. Except names all rest have no sense .

I feel sorry for Henry Cavill because I know that he tried his best to make it a worthy show. Great respect for him for that.

Watching the foundation get laid isn’t always exciting, but it does feel like showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is building toward rousing sequences and cares about each of the characters equally. Whether you feel the same doesn’t really matter. “The Witcher” is in it for the long haul, and even if Season 2 feels longer than it should, you won’t regret the ride.

“The Witcher” constantly struggles to balance its dialogue-driven scenes with pushing the plot forward. It can be an exhausting show in terms of pace—every single episode feels longer than it actually is.
