Overall, the 2nd season of "The Witcher" takes a very good step forward. The narrative structure is now clearer (although the first season also had a charm with it). Bad news!...instead of creating the world and characters that we viewers can identify with and share the journey together, Netflix has gone for cheap tricks of shock and awe (killing of Eskel -by Geralt, what's more -Geralt would never do that, last resort he would offer himself)and then Yennefer cutting her wrists!...Again!...well, shock is there bvut no awe...disgust is what we are left with.
One good change...Geralt looks delicious the girls say...and the boys would like to be like him!
The ugly scar is gone...and Geralt is not an arrogant prick and an imbecile to boot, lioke he is in the game Wild Hunt.
One thing though about the scar...when we get to Skellige i'll miss ("nice scar, want to see mine")

This season destroys more original characters than it kills monsters.

This thing can only be called a profanation of Sapkowski's work, the script looks as if it was written by a 12-year-old on the basis of the book's cover. This thing can only be called a profanation of Sapkowski's work, the script looks as if it was written by a 12-year-old on the basis of the book's cover. If anyone expects to see in this thing... a good Witcher story in a cruel, racist, greyish world full of deep moral dilemmas and intrigues, it is better not to even start it, and best to forget that such a thing was ever made.
The plot is completely chaotic and nonsensical, while the first episode is quite good, the following episodes make people completely brainless (do you really have to explain every emotion and event to the viewer because the viewer is, according to them, so dumb that he does not understand it?). Construction of characters and the world does not exist, it lacks any authenticity, the kings are shown as total pigs without brains, generally the image of the world saying "look how patriarchal and chauvinistic it is, but women are strong and the greatest" and probably that's all that **** focused on, but the best thing is this, But the best part is that the effect is completely opposite, as a viewer it felt like the women in this fanfic were ridiculed, shown in the most stereotypical way possible, devoid of any elegance, seriousness, calculating and intelligence that in the book basically controlled the world from the back seat. This series only leaves some of the more clever donkeys in the form of women further portraying them as annoying mood swings. Also if Lauren's goal was to promote strong women then something went wrong.
Another issue regarding world building is. the distance, all the scenes feel like they're just across town. For the uninitiated, kaer morhen was far to the north in the keadween, the only people who knew the way there were the witchers of the wolf school and those to whom the witchers had told the location of their habitat, the rest of us could not have known, but anyway it took months to get to kaer morhen from cintra, and according to the series it was a small castle maybe 20 minutes away from the larger cities that even the whores knew the way to.
All of the above are just the tip of the iceberg of **** that this series is. Lauren is telling fans of the books and games that she doesn't care about their opinions, that she doesn't care about making a good series based on the book and keeping the level. It was created by a person who doesn't understand the Witcher phenomenon, doesn't understand why people love it so much, she despises the source material, doesn't give a damn whether it's going to be good or not, it's obvious that she has no idea what this world looks like, so she created another generic fantasy series as if it was based on Xene or Hercules but with the Witcher tag attached to it, so it's just a cash grab and it's just a way to kill the popularity of the title.

The good part is of course Henry trying to save it as much as he can, but he can't do it. The special effects are also on a good level, and that's about it, because everything else is hopeless if you still call it The Witcher, but if you call it something else and don't refer to the world of The Witcher then it's just a generic fantasy series that you can play in the background.

Not enough action, not enough tension, not enough epic moments, not enough humor, not enough Geralt.

Too much filler, too much build up, too much information thrown at the viewer, too many actors that don't fit the part (Yennefer).

By the end of the season you have a better idea, but then I was rather annoyed by the cheap B movie narratives and the shallow and unconsistent characters. All woman suddenly find their soft spot and become nice. Geralt becomes almost boring in his flat good guy role.

Special effects are much better than in the first season. But this doesn't help if the story is not interesting. This series lost me, I probably won't watch a third season.

S2 was hard to follow because of all the factions introduced and their motives, think of GOT with all the players and motivations squeezed into eight concurrent episodes with endless dialogue forcing the issues. Also, I found the whole witch possession overwhelming and lacking explanation. Now for some good, the last two episodes did manage a decent buildup for promising next season (hopefully). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who only played the games, I didn't hate this season, but I didn't love it either. The show looks good and the acting, for the most part, is great. The writing however just doesn't always do the story a lot of favour.

I understand that some changes need to be made in order to translate a story from a book to the screen and, to be fair, some things I understood were changes are definitely for the best. I think showing Ciri's teleporting abilities and foreshadowing the Wild Hunt was very necessary, and Voleth Meir provided a much needed and very Witcher-esque antagonist that could tie the season togather. However, how Eskel was handled was a completely unnecessary slap in the face of anyone familiar with the franchise.

While most people zoom in on Eskels death, the worst change in my eyes was Yennifers arc, which just doesn't make sense even to someone unfamiliar with the franchise. Stregobor casually interrogating Yennifer and getting away with it was **** Yennifer turning against the brotherhood and Aretuza was **** Yennifer making her grand stand, of all opportunities she had, in front of a delegation of sorcerers and kings was **** Yennifer, after completely whiping out a complete Nilfgaardian army, deciding spiring Cahir was necessary was **** Yennifer and Cahir actually getting away completely unarmed and without magic from what has to be an impossibly tightly guarded area was **** Yennifer trying to sacrefice Ciri to a demon was **** and puts a lot of strain on her relationship with Ciri and Geralt that future seasons will have to try very, very hard to rectify.

If you're going to play around with the source material, please look at the games for an example of how to do it sensibly and respectfully. Don't have characters make decisions that are completely out of character. Don't break the internal logic of the world. And while you're at it: Stop making unnecessarily diverse casting choices. Xenophobia is a big deal in the Witcher universe. Lean into it. I would've 100% preferred all black elves and white nords over every race being completely random real-life ethnicities.

I think Henry Cavill is portraying a great version of Geralt still. It is rumoured he did have to influence some of the writing of his own character during filming, which is likely why his character is the the most enjoyable and consistent throughout but highlights he himself saw how flawed the writing was.
No other characters stood out unfortunately, mostly keeping me bored anytime Cavill was off screen.
Ultimately wherever all that extra budget money went for the second season, it definitely wasn't put towards the writing, and the show suffers because of it.
A real shame as with better thought out writing for their new plot or alternatively just sticking much closer to the original source material the show had the potential to be something special. I won't be tuning back in for a third season

Season 2 was all about character arcs corruption, and also of the Witcher universe. The stories are meaningless, character choices are irrational, the world means little and less considering the characters just simply go to extreme distances in a scene cut (and no, not using the conventional teleportation methods laid by the show).

The worse character development (if you can even call it that) was by far from Yennefer. Not only she lost all the build-up from Season 1, from wishing to be a mother so hard that she'd almost kill herself to protect a random baby, to go to extreme lengths to chase a dragon for that kind of power, even to consider giving up HER OWN CHAOS to do so. What does she do instead in this Season? - I'll spoil it for you, because it's that bad - when she loses her power, she decides the only thing that is reasonable is to sacrifice a child to get the chaos back. Not only a simple child, Geralt's child.

And why did Lauren do that? Because, as she said herself, she wanted "women to be at the center of the story" and to "create another story for Yennefer" which she found more fullfilling. And by doing that they created a terrible, meaningless, clueless, irrational story, in which the script is so bad the acting feel like a submediocre soap-opera.

Exploring that many storylines and treating them like cogs in a "chosen one" plot machine means you don't treat any of them in a meaningful way. Additionally, I think that the way scenes were shot was pretty bad - e.g. seeing how Geralt was standing in the background doing nothing in the final fight scene was ridiculous. Many characters are done Injustice and the tone of the show has shifted to almost boring and predictable. Feels more like game of thrones season 8 rather than season 1. A mistake I hope can be remedied before the soul of everything that made the show great is ruined completely.

Contrary to the books, they created an incoherent world filled with shallow characters. The writing and pacing is terrible. The show is all over the place as they try to squeeze in as much as they can in too few episodes instead of focusing on the main aspects of the story. It results in cheap shortcuts, lack of character development, lack of context of many scenes, superfluous side stories that don’t make sense when it’s not straightforward butchery of the books and characters. I understand taking liberties from the source material when you adapt a book to make a tv show but here is it done very poorly and it doesn’t make sense.

The only decent thing in this show is Cavill’s acting.

I will dive directly into the ****

1-Vesimir is weak in morals, physic, and personally. And gess what...he wants to make NEW witchers !!!.
2-Elskel starts a whore party at Kaer Morhen...really!!!, Kaer Morhen should be kept secret and only very selected few have access to it. The get killed by Gerald. A major wicher get killed in one episode by Gerald. This is bad joke.
3-Yennifer has weak non arogant personality, she almost betrays Ciri under the effect of a Gaunter O'Dimm-like female devil. That devil then possesses...gess who...the Wild Hunt.
4-Cahir gets arrested and tortured then saved by.. Yennifrr…WTF.

Only point goes for Henry C. Who puts his best in this show...but that will not save it unfortunatly.

For me this is a dead series. It seems to me that NETGLIX stuffed the writers mouth with dollars that he can’t speek about this terrible drama

This reminde my how another ''modern era female'' show runner destroyed STAR WARS. This will happen again.

My hope: non exist, but to make my last wish: wished the show was run up by a fan who played the games and read the books and made a faithfull adaptation, coz as they keep saying ''there is alot of source material''' yet they keep inventing a pale non-exciting drama out of those epic materials.

Feel really sad to witness my beloved franchise being mutilated and twisted.

These people came to you to watch the story they know and love because someone BEFORE you worked hard and made them fall in love with it. These are not your achievements! You should respect this fact. People watched your show because they love the games and books + because you released it for Christmas, in perfect timing for an already created fanbase. Not because they loved what you did to it! WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO YENNEFER is unforgivable, the Yen we know would never have done this to Geralt because she is smarter than that! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, well, well. Where to start? I will ignore the fact that we cannot call it adaptation as beside main characters names there is nothing in common with books - I can ignore that if quality of script and narration would be good. But it's poor as hell. From logic gaps, instant transportation or people and horses, poor dialogs and idiotic conversations by weird weak play with light, general plastic of whole world, and general poor reliability (simply yeah - bunch of elves is coming into big city and kill children with magic - I'm sure that all people decided to remove themselves from the street... it's so idiotic that it reached level of parody at this point). There is no climate, inside world is not interesting and sadly there is no inside world logic in it. It's just boring - I literarily felt asleep on it. I'm done with the Witcher series - there is no point waiting for another season. I rather like to wait for someone else to buy the rights from Netflix in 30 years as it's obvious they decided they want to produce B/C class fantasy shows. And for B/C class fantasy show it's good. But you know - B/C is not something I watch to watch. I would say it's like Xena - but Xena had much better narration and at least a little bit of storybuilding behind it - here I fear the show writers (and showrunner) were on drugs - it's so chaotic and without inside logic - that I can only receive it as parody at this point. Considering it all old Polish (look for it) one was weak because of lack of money. Netflix one is weak because it's a show about teenagers imprisoned in adult bodies, written by adults with the mentality of teenagers. Expand

If they wanted to attract the folks who loved the games to take the advantage of the hype The Wild Hunt generated, then they missed terribly. If they targeted the novel fanbase, then they misfired even more dramatically, since not a single character in the series even remotely represents those from the books. And that`s the problem we have with modern trend of "lets try to push in several books into an 8-episode TV series". The narrative feels underdeveloped and rushed, the number of characters vs the number of episodes ratio denies their proper exposure, a terrible miscast alienates you from feeling sympathetic to at least somebody on a screen. I have a lot of respect to Henry Cavill, but he is just not a proper Geralt, he just isn`t. He`s too buffed, too brutal, too handsome, too perfect. That`s not how a witcher must look. And when you fall short so hard with your main character, there`s no surprise the rest will go even worse. The only two I can sorta comply with are Ciri and Jaskier. And what the hell happened to Eskel? Why does he look like a mentally unstable, 17-year old junkie who is in the middle of his puberty? WTF? And what about Vesemir? Where is that old, calm, and experienced witcher who replaced a father and became a mentor to the rest in Kaer Morhen? What we got insted is a middle aged man who seems to have a drinking problem and is incapable of holding his **** together, making one bad decision after another. WTF, Netflix?!
So, the show fails to deliver the atmosphere and experience the books and the games were able to, leaving to core fanbase unsatisfied, while simultaneously being too rushed to explain anything to those who know NOTHING about the Witcher universe. It is just ok enough to sit through it for a couple of evenings while having a snack, but has nothing to add upon or improve regarding books and games, making it completely not worth your time.

    * Selective cast diversity continues, with many darker-skinned actors with weird accents being part of a dark, cloudy and wintery land, yet no Asian actors.

But it's far from a "bad show" as many angry fans are labeling it. The plot pacing and direction have improved a lot from Season 1. There is definitely a continuity in the episodes, and sense of direction.

Acting is generally ok, I personally enjoy Cavill's Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer, Jaskier, Triss, Vesemir, Dijkstra, Cahir are all very easy to watch.
Fringila, Vingelfortz, Triss, Tissaia and the other mages are very mediocre.
Francesca, Filavandrel, Dara, generally the elves, are very bad, thankfully they don't get a lot of screentime.

I don't agree with the cast selection and the producer's "diversity for the sake of diversity" policy, it's annoying at times (Dara, I'm looking at you), but in my eyes it's not enough to condemn the show.

Overall, it's about 10 hrs of entertainment, we've had a lot of fun watching it, and I'd say it's definitely worth a watch. Probably it's not going to be memorable, but it doesn't have to be.

Knowingly making huge adjustments from the source material when a good proportion of the fans have been brought in due to that source material Seems foolish. it makes a disconnect between the material and the show thus meaning that the show must fall back on its simple quality.
Here it isn't all bad, because of noticeable improvements in acting, costume design, set design and visual effects, meaning it doesn't fall flat on its face.
Reading the reasoning behind an unexpected death in the series, probably the most notable change from the source material doesn't provide any clarity.
It just seems that they were unable to do proper character development and fell back on people knowing the character from the source material and the games to make that death more impactful.
Though season 1 was a testament to character development especially for Yennefer It's absent here.
Although, it's still entertaining and will bring in the views. The showrunners seem to have divided its view base to no clear gain.

I've read the books, and I've just finished up Season 2, and I have to say I'm really impressed with both. Both are works of art in their own right. It is true that the show deviates from the books in a few areas, but I think that is the point of art. If you don't interpret and make it something new, nothing is gained. I thought the show was spectacularly acted, the plot was really engaging in new ways, and its inspired me to go back to the books because the world, the lore, and the characters are so interesting.

At the end of the day, the show is fantastic. I hope it inspires a new generation of readers to pick up Sapkowski's books, and CD Projekt Red's games. It's quite an amazing universe they've built, and I can't wait to see what they've got lined up next.

It's really owfull.I can understand why did they decide to make from dark fantasy a childish stupid story? It has no scene! I'm an audience for this story, not middle school children! They haven't got brave to make real harsh story with personality's in characters.

Создатели явно решили пойти по какому-то своему особому пути. Если хотите настоящего ведьмака, то лучше книжки почитать или ознакомиться с серией игр, но никак не с этим порождением отбитого наглухо графомана. Expand

As an adaptation of a book, the series is terrible. As a generic fantasy - at best mediocre. Nice filming and CGI, but very poor script full of logical inconsistencies. Also, it shares with the books only character names and 3-4 minutes per episode (except for the fisrt one). I'm dissapointed!

That's not witcher. Plot is f***ed. Miscast and no books atmosphere. Netflix, please, change showrunners.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ngl my boy Henry Cavill is pretty much the only good thing about Witcher season 2. vesemir acting was so bad.. Story has nothing to do with either the books or the games, Triss and Yen feels like woke propagenda because we cannot have white women nowdays on Netflix shows now can we..
and why the hell did they kill eskel so early on. Season 1 was pretty good but 2 is pretty much **** up big time. Can't wait for black Letho and Indian Shani

I have very negative emotions after watching the season. The plot is completely broken. The main messages are displaced. The characters are not revealed. There are a lot of bloopers throughout the entire series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s just bad. I read all book and payed games long before the series. Creators told us about books but the series has nothing to do with them. Terrible attitude of the authors. Many illogical moments in the script. Very bad graphics. The death of Eskel, constant teleports of the characters over long distances, the loss of Yennifer's magical abilities, and so on, much can be said. I am very sorry that my favorite universe was destroyed in Netflix’s creation. After watching the eighth series I was extremely disappointed and there was only one thought “Just how? How?”. Only people that didn’t read books or played games can barely enjoy the series. But even as a stand-alone product it’s awful. Of course 140 million views (2 minutes of watching counts as view already lol) is an indication of good job (no). Funny that nothing will change and they will continue to make another strange things in their series. Expand

Every single episode besides the first one is just plain stupid and boring. Decisions made by some characters are hard to explain or justify. All that in addition to wooden play by actors, absolutely no tension between characters and no idea how to enrich the story. In conclusion, poor tv show with questionable cast decisions, probably tried to make a tv show for everybody and came up with a tv show nobody will want to watch. I only feel sorry for Cavill as he was the only one giving somehow positive feeling. Expand

I enjoyed the first season enough to re watch several times. Sure, it was a bit hard to follow at first, but otherwise the quality was just barely enough.

This is nowhere near that "good". The casting is somewhat better but the acting has dropped through the floor Metacritic's mobile site is as bad as this season, so I can't finish that sentence. I can't add any more below this either,

    2/10 at best.

Besides first episode, which still has some flaws and controversial elements in my opinion, it was overwhelmingly boring, bland and convoluted mess with no regards to consistency, conciseness etc. Cheap Hollywood entertainment in a nutshell. From adaptation POV it was mostly unforgivable. A bad fanfiction at best.

It'll be much quicker to share the positives:
-Geralt played by Henry Cavill is really good, I see Geralt on screen when Henry is shown and that is really something considering how much Henry differs visually from Geralt described in the books. He feels what Geralt is and it shows. Great actor. Same thing goes for Joey as Jaskier. These are great casting choices, and I really wish they

-First episode "Grain of Truth" was pretty good. It showed what adaptation is all about: It doesn't have to be exactly like in source material, some freedom is needed but if the show is called "The Witcher" it should stay true to the atmosphere of the original and don't change the story at it's core. Wasn't awesome, but it filled my heart with hope.
And that hope was gone after 10 minutes of watching the second episode of this season. Bad storytelling and usage of characters from the original story without understanding their personality and values (not gonna mention changing whole story of some them, cause that could be fun if done right) Boring dialogues, boring music. Maybe the fighting scenes were pretty fun but that's it. Show is rotten, I truly wish someone else would make series about the Witcher, it deserves much better.

Not sure about all these negative reviews. I'm guessing some aren't happy with the diverse casting? It's a solid, entertaining bit of fantasy goodness, ignore the haters.

The show has earned a sizable amount of goodwill in an impressively short time, and even if we can no longer see the destination, The Witcher still feels like a hell of an adventure.

Watching the foundation get laid isn’t always exciting, but it does feel like showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is building toward rousing sequences and cares about each of the characters equally. Whether you feel the same doesn’t really matter. “The Witcher” is in it for the long haul, and even if Season 2 feels longer than it should, you won’t regret the ride.

“The Witcher” constantly struggles to balance its dialogue-driven scenes with pushing the plot forward. It can be an exhausting show in terms of pace—every single episode feels longer than it actually is.
