The willful ommision of nudity, especially in scenes where the source material clearly staded nudity, is a shame among the franchise.

This show isn't good. No one could possibly argue that it was anything other than poor. Cavill carries it to some degree, but the amateurish story telling and action is just too much.
Having said that, giving it 0 or 1 is just ridiculous; these are rage scores. I'm giving it 3 because Cavill is good and because bad as it was, I still sat through it all. This is a below average tv

Insufferably long and uneventful. This season butchered the character development of so many and did nothing with a lot of them. This could have easily been cut down into 4-5 episodes. Dragging it on as long as they did with such a mediocre story did far more harm than good.

I don't know why the writers thought it was a good idea to rewrite this story. The original books and video games were all well received by fans, this season 2 not so much. What does that tell you? The writers need to be replaced. Without Henry I don't think this show will last. Also, the positive critic review are suspicious. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The director and screenwriters decided to imagine that they are better writers than Sapkowski, so they decided to radically change an excellent story and make THEIR CREATION. Geralt all season does nothing but talking to much (according to his statements, one might think that he is a philosopher), it seems that in the Netflix series, his main vocation is not to kill monsters, but to talk. There is practically no fight, they look inorganic, the stories are fictional (the arc with Ciri is just a laughing stock, they invented some kind of ancient old witch who was nowhere else, told us a meanless story about Fringilla, which does not affect the on the plot in any way, invented monoliths with monsters, oh gods you are just "great" writers, you've created what we never seen at Witcher's books and games.
Key characters (Eskel, Myszowór) have already been killed in two seasons. How Eskel was killed - oh, what an absurdity it is, supposedly he got infected from Leshy and became Leshy. Do you even know why witchers are tested with herbs? They are immune, and can never be infected from monsters and become monsters. (vampires, brooks, Leshys, and so on) They came up with an uninteresting story with Yennefer, made all the sorceresses unattractive (which fundamentally contradicts the book, where they made beauties out of themselves with magic, specially).
And God, why did you put a 20-year-old guy in the role of Emhyr? Do you even understand that he must be 40 years old as least? By adding stubble, you haven't made it look older, because in the scene before, he was a 20 year old boy!
Liberal elves - a separate chapter in this absurdity invented by the director and screenwriters. Why would the elves changed their skin color? Why do the inhabitants of the Arabian East and Africa play elves?

Just 0 out of 10, absolutely deserved, as the authors think they are better writers than the author of the original story. Everything was rewritten, everything was changed from original The Witcher.

Amazing how my critical reviews of woke political nonsense movies and shows get deleted, but thousands of 10/10 bots supporting this trash do not.

Season 2 improves over season 1 in one singular aspect, CGI got a decent upgrade. Everything else is a downgrade. Episode 1, which was based on a short story within Spakowski's novel called "Grain of Truth" was the only episode in this throwaway of a season that has any relevance or faithfulness to the source material. The love story between Nivellen & Vereena is one of those parts of a book that become memorable years after reading it, and while the show does a good job of depicting it, there are even a few errors and missing elements (albeit forgivable ones) that take away from the darkness of it all.

After that, the creator takes the show in a completely different direction, a story she feels she needs to tell. Problem is, your audience isn't a bunch of progressive sissies without an ounce of comprehension or understanding for narrative storytelling... your audience are loyal fans of Sapkowski's work, whether by his books or CDPR's adaptation of the games, you did not earn this fanbase or following, what you did is get thrown into a position you have no business being in because you are a progressive female "producer" and coast on the coattails of a writer that actually possesses talent.

You are the female version of DB Weiss & David Benioff, except you are starting at Season 8 of GoT and pulling the IP down with you. Henry Cavill is the only saving grace from this disaster you call an "adaptation", and when he has to step in and remind you that Geralt is the main character and should probably show up on the screen more often, perhaps it is time to acknowledge that you lied when you said you were going to "remain faithful to the source material”. The diversity casting, altered characters, awful pacing, terrible storytelling, political injections, and even this user score and universal condemnation from the community, tell me you are not a “Witcher fan”.

Step down, delete this abomination, keep Cavill, hand the keys to HBO or someone with some sense of awareness, and go make your own IP with your own ideas and let us know how that works out. The only reason this show has not been canned is because of the gigantic fan base and its loyalty, again, something you did not earn. Oh, and this upcoming spinoff? Cancel it. Nobody cares about your diversity hire fan fiction.

    + CGI improvement
+ Henry Cavill is an excellent Geralt and actually cares

    - Terrible writing
    - Terrible casting (outside of Geralt & Dijkstra)
    - Character portrayals are inaccurate
    - Source material abandoned
    - Contrived plot that is a jumbled mess
    - Story is riddled with plot holes and none of the plots make sense
    - Diversity casting makes no sense for the relations in the narrative
    - Creator's political views are pushing important characters to the side
    - Pacing is all over the pace, show gets really boring
    - Another beloved IP torched by Netflix

Overall, it is what you have come to expect from Netflix shows & showrunners, talentless hacks that have no business being in the position they are in and decimating beloved IPs in the name of political positions and money. Originally a 2/10, but Metacritic deletes my reviews because they have progressive bot moderators who delete well-deserved criticism, here’s a zero.

But this season is not an adaptation. It contains a lot of fan fiction od dubious quality, which create plot contrivances and changes characters compared to Season 1 or the anime spin-off. It feels rushes, the worldbuilding is almost non existent. All different cities in different kingdoms feel culturally the same. Dialogues are more a generic declaration of intents by the characters, rather than confrontations on issues or feelings. Travelling feels like teleportation, and the whole pacing is off. Rushed, almost like the showrunner is afraid of boring the viewer. They are treating this show as a generic teen fantasy made for CW, rather than the mature dark fantasy it's supposed to be. The Sapkowski's saga is one where the characters take center stage and drive the plot forwards. But this show doesn't take its time to establish the characterizations of its characters and their relationships with each other. In some way, it's reaping the fruits of what they did in Season 1. Skipping important character moments to rush the story forward.

Season 3 cannot save this, because the entire show is build on rotten foundations. A terrible show, and a terrible disappointment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Even after only watching until episode 5 i can already tell where Netflix is taking the series... The episodes so far have been pretty boring for the most part, the only characters that are kind of interesting are Geralt and Ciri. I couldn't care less about Yennefer's storyline, it's a shame what they did to her, her character had so much potential. Apart from that there are small (but noticeable) logical flaws throughout the season so far. For example characters that are supposed to be dead are suddenly... not dead anymore?? And why is it proof that if Yennefer kills some random nilfgaardian knight in front of everybody that she's not spying for Nilfgaard?
Many things aren't explained very well or not at all; it's hard to see a meaning behind a lot of decisions characters make or how things eventually turn out.
I expected a lot more tbh but then again... it's Netflix. And Netflix tends to ruin quite a lot of series after the first season, mainly due to a "woke" or in this case just a bad script.

I don't know what's gonna happen in the next season (s?) but I'm sure they won't recover from this, they can no longer use the source material anymore because if they would, they're gonna tear apart everything they have done with these two season and that would create even more plot holes that they already have (and there are a lot of plot holes). This is another netflix trash adaptation, hope one day someone else will reboot this series.

It almost physically hurts to look at what they are doing with our beloved universe.
Who was this show filmed for? It is difficult to look at it as a unique product, because the bloopers and holes are so large that if I didn’t know the Witcher, I would have turned off the series in the first episodes and forgot about it as if it were a bad dream.

It is impossible to look like a product written in the universe of The Witcher, because there is only one name from The Witcher, and a huge bolt is put on the universe.
And even more so it is impossible to watch, as a film adaptation of the events of the books, because from the events of the books there ... uh-uh, nothing? They would have made an original product based on motives, but I just don't understand why what is happening is happening. Hissrich and Co. just spit in the soul and face of the fans of the saga, both books and games.

Season 2 is bad. Save for episode 01. Also for Geralt and Ciri, both actors fill their roles perfectly.
My two cents, the series is called The Witcher, so put more witcher in it. Also, there is no need to censor boobs in a TV show not aimed for children. Finally, the author of the books and the developers of the games wrote interesting stories, why don't you bring those to the screen.

But my problem (and not only mine - my wife who knows only some of the first short stories agrees with me completely) lies elsewhere. The writing is so absurd and chaotic that you scratch your head and murmur "wtf?".
The first season parasited on the source material and pushed woke culture on us but at least the main characters had _some_ character.
In season 2 the writing is so off that you no longer know what the hell is going on, who's where and where this where is, characters meet at random and noone knows why... the list goes on and on. It's no longer the original saga based on greatly written characters - there's almost none of that left. It's not even a hack and slash show. It's some weird GoT wannabe written probably by some interns.
The only thing I liked about the show was the visuals. I liked the cyan-yellow colour range, I like the lighting in most of the shots. It was pleasing to watch. But that's all.
    I didn't like Geralt's new contact lenses!

This thing can only be called a profanation of Sapkowski's work, the script looks as if it was written by a 12-year-old on the basis of the book's cover. If anyone expects to see in this thing... a good Witcher story in a cruel, racist, greyish world full of deep moral dilemmas and intrigues, it is better not to even start it, and best to forget that such a thing was ever made.
The plot is completely chaotic and nonsensical, while the first episode is quite good, the following episodes make people completely brainless (do you really have to explain every emotion and event to the viewer because the viewer is, according to them, so dumb that he does not understand it?). Construction of characters and the world does not exist, it lacks any authenticity, the kings are shown as total pigs without brains, generally the image of the world saying "look how patriarchal and chauvinistic it is, but women are strong and the greatest" and probably that's all that **** focused on, but the best thing is this, But the best part is that the effect is completely opposite, as a viewer it felt like the women in this fanfic were ridiculed, shown in the most stereotypical way possible, devoid of any elegance, seriousness, calculating and intelligence that in the book basically controlled the world from the back seat. This series only leaves some of the more clever donkeys in the form of women further portraying them as annoying mood swings. Also if Lauren's goal was to promote strong women then something went wrong.
Another issue regarding world building is. the distance, all the scenes feel like they're just across town. For the uninitiated, kaer morhen was far to the north in the keadween, the only people who knew the way there were the witchers of the wolf school and those to whom the witchers had told the location of their habitat, the rest of us could not have known, but anyway it took months to get to kaer morhen from cintra, and according to the series it was a small castle maybe 20 minutes away from the larger cities that even the whores knew the way to.
All of the above are just the tip of the iceberg of **** that this series is. Lauren is telling fans of the books and games that she doesn't care about their opinions, that she doesn't care about making a good series based on the book and keeping the level. It was created by a person who doesn't understand the Witcher phenomenon, doesn't understand why people love it so much, she despises the source material, doesn't give a damn whether it's going to be good or not, it's obvious that she has no idea what this world looks like, so she created another generic fantasy series as if it was based on Xene or Hercules but with the Witcher tag attached to it, so it's just a cash grab and it's just a way to kill the popularity of the title.

The good part is of course Henry trying to save it as much as he can, but he can't do it. The special effects are also on a good level, and that's about it, because everything else is hopeless if you still call it The Witcher, but if you call it something else and don't refer to the world of The Witcher then it's just a generic fantasy series that you can play in the background.

I think Henry Cavill is portraying a great version of Geralt still. It is rumoured he did have to influence some of the writing of his own character during filming, which is likely why his character is the the most enjoyable and consistent throughout but highlights he himself saw how flawed the writing was.
No other characters stood out unfortunately, mostly keeping me bored anytime Cavill was off screen.
Ultimately wherever all that extra budget money went for the second season, it definitely wasn't put towards the writing, and the show suffers because of it.
A real shame as with better thought out writing for their new plot or alternatively just sticking much closer to the original source material the show had the potential to be something special. I won't be tuning back in for a third season

Season 2 was all about character arcs corruption, and also of the Witcher universe. The stories are meaningless, character choices are irrational, the world means little and less considering the characters just simply go to extreme distances in a scene cut (and no, not using the conventional teleportation methods laid by the show).

The worse character development (if you can even call it that) was by far from Yennefer. Not only she lost all the build-up from Season 1, from wishing to be a mother so hard that she'd almost kill herself to protect a random baby, to go to extreme lengths to chase a dragon for that kind of power, even to consider giving up HER OWN CHAOS to do so. What does she do instead in this Season? - I'll spoil it for you, because it's that bad - when she loses her power, she decides the only thing that is reasonable is to sacrifice a child to get the chaos back. Not only a simple child, Geralt's child.

And why did Lauren do that? Because, as she said herself, she wanted "women to be at the center of the story" and to "create another story for Yennefer" which she found more fullfilling. And by doing that they created a terrible, meaningless, clueless, irrational story, in which the script is so bad the acting feel like a submediocre soap-opera.

The sad part is I would not mind changing the story if the changes they made were good, but the writing and execution was very poor. Expand

I am a huge fan of the books, having read them all and a massive fan of The Witcher universe. I can honestly say that I have no idea what happened to this season. Instead we are given painfully generic dialogue, a plot that is as boring as it is nonsensical. Characters with no development or investment, characters that are completely disrespected and lastly, pandering to the "message of wokeness". This is how NOT to write an adaptation or any show for that matter. Henry and Freya do as good a job as they can but i do feel sorry for Henry, as he must be wondering what on earth Lauren has done to the show. It's a Witcher show in name only at this point and does feel disrespectful to the actual books and the fans. Lauren (the show runner) has completely butchered this for her own means, clearly.

Season 1 followed plots from the books and whilst the broken chronology sometimes made things difficult to know where in the books you were; a reasonable job was done. Season 2 however....well.... it made no sense. I was so confused as most of what you see never happens in the books and it really shows. Bitterly disappointed and yet another trashy, bad-faith show to add to the vault of shame to be forgotten about. Such a wasted opportunity!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot has changed this season, but you need to choose the main one. The series began to revolve around Tsiri, I certainly understand everything, but what the hell if the name of the series is The Witcher? Tsiri and Yenefer studied magic for a long time and it didn't take long for her to see here "You are strong, you are a WOMAN, you can believe me" and you build a bridge and teleport to the other end of the world. Geralt needs a second somewhere only 2 m? Expand

Terrible decisions all over the season, it completly departures from the books, kills beloved characters just to subvert expectations and so much more...
Its was a very disappointing season after a very good season 1.

In comparison to the highly successful and exciting season 1 season 2 feels woke and underwhelming. Many characters are done Injustice and the tone of the show has shifted to almost boring and predictable. Feels more like game of thrones season 8 rather than season 1. A mistake I hope can be remedied before the soul of everything that made the show great is ruined completely.

Practically unwatchable. Not only I was incapable of making it to the end of the season, I did fast forward several scenes as they were too embarrassing to watch. Contrary to the books, they created an incoherent world filled with shallow characters. The writing and pacing is terrible. The show is all over the place as they try to squeeze in as much as they can in too few episodes instead of focusing on the main aspects of the story. It results in cheap shortcuts, lack of character development, lack of context of many scenes, superfluous side stories that don’t make sense when it’s not straightforward butchery of the books and characters. I understand taking liberties from the source material when you adapt a book to make a tv show but here is it done very poorly and it doesn’t make sense.

The only decent thing in this show is Cavill’s acting.

I stopped watching before the end of ep. 4

The show has earned a sizable amount of goodwill in an impressively short time, and even if we can no longer see the destination, The Witcher still feels like a hell of an adventure.

Watching the foundation get laid isn’t always exciting, but it does feel like showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is building toward rousing sequences and cares about each of the characters equally. Whether you feel the same doesn’t really matter. “The Witcher” is in it for the long haul, and even if Season 2 feels longer than it should, you won’t regret the ride.

“The Witcher” constantly struggles to balance its dialogue-driven scenes with pushing the plot forward. It can be an exhausting show in terms of pace—every single episode feels longer than it actually is.
