The User score is what matters here. These are the people watching the show, paying money to get Netflix going. It was nice to see a character (Witcher) so accurate to the game! Ya know, the people spending $ 60 to play the game and another $20 for netflix. WE were happy with this. Y'all wonder why you're loosing money and bo one think of you as journalists lol.

Thanks to this series, I got acquainted with the wonderful world of Andrzej Sapkowski - I started reading books and playing games. Thank you, Netflix, for such a pleasant acquaintance. The series itself is a good one. However, the only good casting is in Geralt and Dandellion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed watching this first season, as it was a season which is really staying close to the books. Every episode I watched, i relatively quickly knew which chapter its source was, and that is good. I also liked the new storyline telling a bit about the background story of Yennefer. The only thing I did not like was the ending: It was my favourite chapter in the book and I don't feel like it has been done justice here.

I don't get why the second season had to be so bad...
I'd still highly recommend giving the first one a watch!

I'll say I was almost shocked at the high quality of this video series. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich was the creator and showrunner for the series - which I did not know until after I watched the first episode. She has a very respectable filmography and I assume she has a very large role in the high quality of the series.

Obviously, not everyone is going to like an action/adventure/fantasy video series - but, if this is the type of subject material you favor, I would highly recommend that you watch this series.

It probably needs to be pointed out that Lauren Schmidt Hissrich first noteworthy writing effort was for the liberal/leftest American TV series "The West Wing". Hissrich has a strong liberal/leftest ideology that she imparts to this series. Some viewers may not be able to accept this because they are so strongly opposed to her political and social beliefs and/or because it is not within the original spirit of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski works. Regardless, the series itself is of high quality within the context of writing, casting, acting, directing, editing, costume, set design, etc, etc.

I just now took a look at the Metacritic user-ratings .This show is obviously not a "10" and it is obviously not a "0" - but, somewhere betwixt. There is an obvious highly emotional reaction to how Hissrich has deviated from the source material and re-imagined the Witcher into a woke/social-justice platform. I'm ignoring that issue for the most part in my review as I prefer to ignore political/religious/social issues in regard to fictional entertainment.

The Witcher was the most legendary looking I ever watched at the time. This is something which might actually become a big franchise in the future if used properly. I have never played the game, though I have The Witcher Enhanced Edition on my GOG account. Because of this at first I was hesitant to watch this show, since I thought I won't understand anything. I have never played the game, though I have The Witcher Enhanced Edition on my GOG account. Because of this at first I was hesitant to watch this show, since I thought I won't understand anything. But later I got to know this is based on the book and not the game, so I was able to enjoy this.
Geralt of Rivia is my favourite mythological character now. His entry in the first scene was very badass, where he rips out a monster and exits. Initially I had only begun watching this for the memes, but slowly I started liking all the characters. In the first episode itself there is the scene where Geralt kills all the villagers and walks out of there. This precedes a meme template which I'm not allowed to write in this review since it's a cuss word.
There is a lot of world building here. We have all the landscapes, the creatures, the people, the lifestyle. It really feels like an RPG. The kids who used to ask everyone to watch Game of Thrones must be rolling in their graves after watching this. It clearly did more world building in just 2 episodes than Game of Thrones did in one whole season. There are many concepts that are explained throughout the series and all the background and context that is required to understand what is happening. The character development is also intense, especially for Yennefer when she transforms into a crooked outcast to a beautiful woman.
My favourite character in the show is the bard. His song, "Toss a coin to your Witcher, oh valley of plenty!" is now stuck in my head and is playing in a loop as I'm writing this review. My favourite episode was the one where all the different characters go out in the mountains to hunt for the golden dragon, and in the end the golden dragon reveals himself before Geralt. It is also the first thing I remember when I think of The Witcher.
It's good to see video game adaptations are finally getting better, and stories from lesser developed countries like Poland are being heard all over the world. I hope this series never gets ruined by the campiness that eventually haunted DCEU or Game of Thrones. This show needs to stay longer. It has inspired me to play the games once I get a gaming PC. It's a cultural phenomenon for us gamers and we must support it if we want to make ourselves and our hobby more recognised.

Then Cavill was impressive for being able to play a very different character, more sombre and brooding than what he's been famous for. Good and very good acting all around, some weaknesses in the dialogues here and there, some strange choices in the storytelling (mainly the timeline treatment, though I did also enjoy having the challenge to piece it all together - might be something that makes me rewatch it before S2 comes out). Greatest disappointment would be how high my expectations went after seeing the first part of Yen's evolution and finding out online that she's supposedly a very powerful sorceress, only to see her presented as... slightly above-average on confidence, knowledge and power for the rest of the season. Maybe they're reserving the more impressive Yen for later, when we start to get bored of seeing Geralt using the same strengths over and over. Oh, and one of the strongest points of this first season is a certain 1-on-1 swordfight scene that was better than any swordfight I'd seen in the last ~20 years. Expand

The main characters, Cavil's Geralt, and Anya Chalotra's Yennefer are very well played, a joy to watch, and have really good chemistry. With Yennefer, it's great to see a badass female character in the truest sense.
The dark fantasy world with Eastern European tinges takes a bit of an acquired taste. For me, the way magic works here makes a bit more sense than in other series.
All in all, it's a good choice if you are looking for something a bit different. I very much hope that the creators will resolve the pacing issues. I would give it a 6 with an heavy emphasis on that I would definitely like to see a second season - which can be translated to a 7.

Quanto as outras interpretações, nada chama muita atenção.

Spends a bit too much time setting up the story, plot and characters, if you are unfamiliar it will be very overwhelming what is happening, who is who and where the current on screen story is taking place due to erratic time skips. Some casting choices are a bit on the safe side but overall Herny Cavill, Freaya Allan and Anya Chalotra are great castings for Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. Only the casting of Triss Merigold is a bit of a head scratcher, while she doesn't play a huge part yet in the series she will judging by the Books and Game. Triss being such a big name in the Witcher universe it was weird not having her play a bigger role in the story.

Overall I'd recommend anyone to watch until the third episode to give it a real shot, has decent fights, true to lore monsters, politics, nudity and overall good acting. Only major downfall of the first season was the slow burn, plodding story for the first few episodes and 1 or 2 uhhhh okay at best CGI moments but nothing thats a show killer. More budget and time and this could be a great show for years to come.

I didn't think that the first season of The Witcher from Netflix was a masterpiece, but I also didn't think it was so terrible that it had NO redeeming qualities (which a score of 0/10 would suggest). From the couple of die-hard fans of the books that I spoke to prior to the show's release, it was evident that they were likely to be unhappy about the show regardless of how it actually turned out. All that being said, I think there were certainly a few areas that could have been better. It took several episodes for the show to really get going, and establish who the main characters were. Without any prior knowledge of the franchise, I can definitely see how someone could feel a bit lost after the first episode. By the end, I thought that the characters and their motivations etc were satisfactorily fleshed out. Still, the last episode felt more like a half-way point for what the story arc of Season 1 should have been, had twice as many episodes been produced instead of the paltry 8 episodes. Overall, I'd give The Witcher a hopeful 7/10. I think that if the show runners listen to critics/fans about the shortcomings of Season 1, they can certainly be remedied when the next season begins production early this year. Expand

This show is seriously fun! Read the first Witcher book and I must admin. They did a pretty good job of remixing the stories into a decent TV Show story-line that was OK to follow but very fun to watch. Hope they make an even better second season now that all the initial character building is done.

After watching the entire show, I'm puzzled about the reviews of professional critics, which weren't too enthusiastic about it.
I'm sure most of them aren't into fantasy stuff and they were already overfed with GoT and, as we all were, disappointed by its ending. And now, yet another fantasy show...I mean, if you're not interested, don't review it!

I think that was an entertaining show and I enjoyed it.
Of course there were some negative points here, mostly the non linear parts of the storytelling.
I was confused especially by the fourth episode, where the plot revolves around a much younger queen Calanthe and her soon to be married daughter which was a story in the past, and then the camera suddenly jumps to Yennefer sitting in a chariot with Queen Lyria, a story playing in the future. I have yet to find out, why they put that plot in there.

Also the entire Yennefer back story arc was probably from the past.
The writers struggled to give all of the main characters a backstory and they didn't manage to work it in seamlessly.

Many who read the books probably had something different in mind for the show, so if you're one of them, you'll probably have plenty of complaints about the show.
I think the cast was good, they played their characters convincingly. Henry Cavill was a very good pick as the lead. I liked the writing and the dialog was actually really good at times. I liked Cavill's deadpan delivery of his wisdom, also providing some very dry humor.

There was enough suspense, excitement and fun and I didn't see the plot turns coming. And that's a good thing. Yes, there is nudity, some boobies and a bit of lovemaking, but tasteful enough.
I wanted to say 'not offensive' but some people are so easily offended.
The fight scenes were well choreographed, the special effects where good enough.
You can't expect top notch CGI in a TV show, especially if it heavily relies on those.
The sheer number of effects would make it too expensive.

I for one, am looking forward to season 2. I recommend giving 'The Witcher' a try!

Its a show with some room to improve, especially on the script and timeline, but the acting is spot on, the fights are also very good, the conversations between the characters are fluid and deep, really good job. One can only hope they put Disney level of budget on this show to make it a more awesome.

I also tell that the Witcher is a complicated IP, it has a lot of characters which are not fully introduced yet as this is only a first season, maybe those who played at least one of the Witcher games or books should be completely sure about this, I've played The Witcher 3 and as I have not found much worthy cinematic or TV series based on video games, I can say, for sure, this is the one we waited for. I was worried this wouldn't be as good, but it's such a really well made version. If you also care about politics and all that, well, I don't think there was any of that, the cast works, the plot is great as I said, the whole worlds looks fantastic, there are some good fighting scenes, not so much monsters yet, lots of magic and creatures. I would give it 10, but, at some points, the series gets too slow for my taste. Expand

And for all those who are comparing it the Game of Thrones, just stop. Just because you love Game of Thrones it doesn't mean that you have to hate The Witcher. I was not that dragged into Game of Thrones after watching it's first few episodes.

Some also commented on how terrible it is when compared to the book. I never read any of the books but this series seems quite nice to me. Maybe when you compare this to the books, this might seem as absolute garbage.

Without having played the games and without having read the books, I can honestly say that The Witcher was pretty interesting from the start.

I actually really liked what they did with different time periods in the storytelling. It creates a little confusion, but in my experience a good kind of confusion that eventually leads to an 'A-ha!' of realization. The only criticism there is that the writing does sometimes struggle to convey not the time period, but the passage of time, leading to some whiplash as we move through each character's story.

Cavill's depiction of Geralt is really good. I was skeptical of his casting, and really skeptical after seeing early promotional set photos, but in the end I was really impressed. Of the two other key roles, I thought Anya was pretty good in the early parts of the story where Yennefer is still unsure of herself, but struggles to muster the charisma of peak Yen. Freya as Ciri does a solid job with what she is called on to do, but her part isn't as demanding so far. Of the rest of the cast, I thought the real standout was Jodhi May, really knocking that character out of the park at different parts of her story.

Other things that spring to mind are that the CGI is pretty 'meh' throughout, occasionally threatening to derail the experience. Dialogue writing is competent throughout, and better than that in places. Fight choreography seemed like a solid B+ to me. Cinematography was consistently very good, often striking without foolishly trying to reproduce Wild Hunt's amazing visuals.

On the whole, I found it to be very compelling, and solid across the board, despite being a very ambitious show.

In addition to the many many people who don't know either. No matter which group you come from, some elements of this show will disappoint you. Henry Cavill did a great job as Geralt. There was a large focus on Anya Chalotra as Yennifer and her roll was really well acted. She has leading lady stuff. Joey Batey as Jaskier (or Dandelion) was just annoying and kinda miscast. There was a lot of noise about Anna Shaffer being miscast as Triss. She is a different interpretation of the character. You don't really see enough of her to know either way.
Overall if it was a new property, everyone would be raving about how good it is, and how it clearly has the potential to get better. I'd say it's just pretty good. I agree it has potential to improve.
Two elements really stuck out to me. Occasional "modern" dialogue thrown in, to appeal to the audience (jarring. Fail). Also the characters relative ages over time. Ignoring that was annoying.
Overall though the main thing is they just didn't trust the audience to stay around. So all the stories feel rushed. They would be better if the show was longer and the stories were allowed to breath more. That one is on the directors and the show runners. Hopefully they've learned their lesson by next season.

Sometimes I feel like I enjoy stuff more than the "anti-woke/gamer" crowd because I'm not holding these "probably not gamers, probably not Witcher-book reading" production teams and actors to incredibly high standards. Not excusing the boring parts, there are some of those, but I just came for a story set in a world where there are monsters, where the men are sometimes worse than the monsters.. and our friend Geralt of Rivia, of course:

The people mad at the show for "not being true to the books" or "being too diverse/woke..." I mean, SURE, whatever, there's some stuff I didn't like too about the casting, but judge them on their performances, not their race. I still really enjoyed binge-watching this though. Though I was sometimes confused about stuff because timeline/plot jump without context sometimes. 0-voting because you hate "woke" & "diversity" can feel like projection from crybabies sometimes. And it's tough adapting "complex on paper" to "more simple on screen," and plus, c'mon folks, it's the FIRST SEASON, JFC..

Critiquing story/plot in the sense that this was probably never ever going to be 100% true to the books is fair, but people need to let up on bashing Netflix just for adding some diversity. I understand that people want to "see themselves" on screen, and that's fair, even if not "accurate." I DO care about the cast being good though, and some people were just kinda alright. Anyways, just letting the reader know ahead of time that tons of the mad people are just being children that wish everything were THEIR conservative, purist tastes.

Played W2 & W3, and a bit of W1, and read only a bit of the first book. I think the professional critics are rating this too low, but there are definitely some things I did not like. Here are things I liked first though:

    -Superman as Geralt
-The actresses that played Renfri, Yennefer & Solaia
    -Geralt & Yen scenes
    -Good dialogue, often funny
-The show's "graphics" are pretty tasty
    -Great atmosphere
    -Some scenes are perfect
    -Feels like good fan-service
-Magic is mostly cool in this show

Okay now what I don't like:

-ONLY 8 EPISODES?! I NEED MY FIX.
-What's with all these NON-GERALT OF RIVIA SCENES? I'M HERE FOR MY BOY!
-Lots of random ass characters getting elevated storywise at the expense of Geralt of Rivia scenes. If you're going to take me away from Geralt of Rivia it should be for Ciri, Yennefer, Triss, Vesemir, etc (the Gang, so to speak), and even then I would rather you quickly come back to Geralt.
-IDK how I feel about the actress that plays Triss. Maybe it's because she looks nothing like the video games though.
-Actually, many characters don't look like how they are depicted in the games, which is gonna annoy people.
-I don't think this is too "new user" friendly. Would recommend this only to the already-initiated.
-Why so much focus on "Nilfgaard bad?"
-Not sure if Yen's main motivation is what it is in the books, but feels kinda random and makes her seem more "traditional" at the expense of her JUST being a powerful woman.
-Yennefer's dress with the cages on the shoulders makes her look skinny, Yennefer is already more of a full-bodied woman in the games
-Not sure if Geralt would ever yell at Dandelion, but that definitely hurt my soul :(
-Ciri's scenes are just awful sometimes, not the actor's fault, but her arc is just kinda boring,
    -"NO" GERALT IN SEASON FINALE
-Some of the characters act stupid, in ways that undermine previous behaviors or just change attitude drastically at certain points.
-Some scenes are kinda bad, ngl, I love CDPR & I'm HEAVILY anticipating next season but yeah, it's rough sometimes.

The only problem is that it starts kind of slow, but as it keeps on going, it gets better. this is a show that demands from the viewer to be invested. Most people who put a bad mark either didn't get past episode 2 or got offended by the casting, i feel like eveything was on point, can't wait for season 2

The show is incredible! It isn't without its flaws and there are a few questionable casting choices, but it's still a great watch. Ultimately, Henry plays the role of Geralt splendidly and as a fan of the games, I was not disappointed.

I like the series alot. The Cast is incredible Henry Cavill IS Geralt, Yennefer is turning into a badass sorceress, the scenery is top noch, the timeline can be confusing but it All comes together perfectly in episode 8. I played all games, read Blood of Elves and Sword of Destiny, I can recommend this Serie to fans and newcomer and cant wait for season 2.

This is the Witcher, if you liked the books or games, you will love it. Unless you are racist of course, and then it'll annoy you.

The Witcher is a messy tangle of plotlines in a world underdeveloped to the point of obscurity.

As a mindless fantasy rollercoaster, Geralt’s journey is five stars all the way to tea-time. Sadly, for those who like brains with their brawn, it may be more of a slog.

It takes a while for viewers to learn how these characters are connected, via an exasperating Westworld-esque narrative knot that takes much of the season to unfurl. ... The Witcher heightens our confusion by fumbling details that would have helped it set a cohesive tone. Dialogue vacillates, from line to line, between theatrical fantasy-speak and modern colloquialisms (“Dragons are, in fact, a thing!”).
