Despite its obvious production quality, it just doesn't translate well onto screen. The characters aren't that compelling, the plot not well-paced or interesting and there isn't that much spectacle to carry the story.

Instead it feels like a story out of the early 2000sm with a simple good & evil story, teenagers, colorful costumes and lackluster world-building.

It just feels like a pre-GoT fantasy story in a post-GoT world.

First of all, I didn't have high expectations, so I can be biased towards the higher score. I have postponed watching until episode 6 was out and I didn't like the first episode at all. After that it's mixed, but getting better.

So far it was quite good, even though changes from the books were mostly illogical, casting is half of the time questionable, and so on. But I can forgive that, even when it's obvious that these changes are made in order to conform to contemporary American political and cultural dogmas.

It makes me want to reread books, and some episodes are quite good and capture the important part of the spirit of the books.

However, I'm a bit skeptical of how many people are giving this 0-1 or 9-10, it reeks of dishonesty and emotions.

The Wheel of Time is an epic/fantasy based on the novels written by Robert Jordan in the 1980s.

The cinematography, editing, costumes, makeup, scenography, stage design, set design and other technical aspects of the series are superb.

But then...
Half of the casting is good. Half of the casting is bad. Half of the acting is good. Half of the acting is bad. Some of the writing is good. Some of the writing is bad.

I'm going to make a wild guess. The series is rated 16+ (young adults). I'm thinking at some point... somehow there was a decision to make a series for teenagers and the project went downhill at that point. Why so much money and talent would be wasted on such excellent technical work to be used on a B-grade project is odd - in my opinion. I think the project was inappropriately budgeted.

Also, again... why there are so many obviously bad casting decisions and bad acting betwixt so many good casting decisions and good acting is bizarre. Something must have gone very haywire within the development. I've seen this in other films in the last couple of years and there seems to be some strange idea that it doesn't matter if half the casting and half the acting is bad. Is it an idea that the good acting will make up for it somehow? Rosamund Mary Ellen Pike (who plays the Moiraine Damodred character) is an actor of the highest quality - and, sure... I certainly understand that it is not possible to cast the entire series with actors of her caliber - but, there is no excuse for casting other characters with such bad non-talent.

In my mind I imagine something like this...
OK.. Scene 29B, take 1... action!.....
Cut.. that's a wrap, good enough for teenagers. We just spent over a $1,000,000 on a 10 minute scene with 11 good actors and 14 really, really bad actors. Teenagers will never notice the bad acting! We certainly aren't going to spend another $100,000 on a second take.

I'm rating this series a 6 - but, understand that is an average of grade-3 acting to grade-9 acting... averaged with grade 7 to grade 10 technicals. A few badly cast, bad actors can destroy what would have been a pretty good series.

Obviously, the issue of how closely a script follows the source material is irrelevant. I'm not sure why so many individuals think that is important.
Books and films are completely different mediums. Making a film that closely follows source material from a book would be an interesting academic exercise - but, not something that is in and of itself necessarily worthwhile. Regardless, as for the writing, obviously the fantasy genre must be something you enjoy or one would assume you would not watch this series. Nevertheless, there are issues with the writing that I'm going to ignore until I've had more time to watch the series.

HDR grading and bitrate quality was awful initially but has since been fixed for all episodes. Sound design is ok, no 5.1 surround mix? Music is eclectic and different but kinda cool.

My main issues are that a good number of the changes, particularly to the magic system rules, very important lore aspects, and some major story and character development have either been changed beyond recognition or removed entirely to be replaced with characters who didn't even appear in the books. Some of these were useful changes that served the tv format, but others were at the expense of the soul and details that made the original book series so amazing. Hopefully the show crew learns their lessons for future seasons and adheres closer to the main story, attempting to recover the plotlines and character development. VFX quality varied wildly throughout the series, from great to terrible, especially episode 8. Without that episode I would've given the series closer to a 7 or 8 overall. This show needs MORE BUDGET AND MORE/LONGER EPISODES to work properly! Pony up and otherwise stay out of the way, Amazon.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am hoping for a better second season. It’s increasingly difficult to grab the reader in the first season of a big show like this, and I think this adaptation suffers from several issues that make loving it difficult. As a fan of the books I am annoyed with many of the choices, particularly at the character level. The first book in the series is not terribly good, but I would expect the TV show to elevate the writing through various changes, rather than making frankly mind boggling character choices. Additionally, the pacing is bizarre, speeding up and slowing down at strange moments and for mysterious reasons. Why? The lack of subtlety in the series is likely a good explanation. Audiences are morons of course and you can feel the writers sneering at you for your own stupidity. That’s fun. Still, quite a bit of potential of this has legs. Perhaps the writers will find their groove. I hope Amazon gives the show some breathing room. Who knows, maybe we will all be making fun of how “meh” the first season was while celebrating its fourth. One can hope. Expand

Rosamund Pike stars as the leader of an all-female organization that’s looking for the dragon reborn (yes, dragons). Her journey leads her to a small village where 4 young people have the potential and embark on a perilous journey. There are some moments of magic and marauding creatures, but what’s lacking is any originality in the approach or style. Some of the locations are impressive, but much of the design is uninspired and some of the CGI is downright shoddy. Fans of the swords and sorcery genre may have the patience, but after watching the first 3 episodes, it still doesn’t have any narrative or visual magic to make it compelling. I've watched this rendition a couple times already and really enjoy the story, acting, music, and settings. I didn't give it a ten because of the last episode leaving us in confusion about some prime characters and how they didn't fulfill their needed parts to continue through the rest of the story. Purhaps we need to trust this will be sorted out properly. I bought Amazon Prime just so we could watch this show and will continue to follow the path to see where the Wheel takes us. Expand

The cast is brilliant, the scenery is gorgeous, and the ability of the show to take the core of the books and put it in tv is brilliant. I love the books and I had concerns coming into the show that it would be unrecognizable. While there have been changes that gave me pause, within the episode or the next I have been able to clearly see why the changes were made. It has been true to the books while not being a word for word or scene by scene duplicate. With about 5 million words across 15 books, it would be impossible to make a tv series that it exactly the same, and frankly, it would be boring on tv if it was. Each episode feels like a movie on its own, and the cold open for episode 7 was one of the best scenes I’ve seen on tv!
It is not perfect, but I understand the difficulties. Between having to stop filming due to the pandemic, Barney Harris leaving the show, and the time constraints of 8 one hour episodes it had an affect on the final product. The show has overcome these obstacles and I can see where they can take the story from here. I am so happy to see the world I have loved for the last 25+ years come to life on screen and I look forward to season 2!

Acting is great, script is really well written, special effects look cool, and when you get more into the music, it's fantastic. It's not 1:1 as the books, but that's part of being an adaptation, show doesn't pretend to be just a copy of the story. Which is great. The worldbuilding is on point, political and personal conflicts are already being introduced and it's just the beginning. It's also the first show with a properly developed magic system. The first three episodes take some time to establish the characters and the world they live in and Episode 4 shows how the Wheel of Time can really blow your mind away. The cast is fabulous. The mystery over the identity of the Dragon Reborn kept non-readers on their toes, and its reveal was well done. Most characters seem to have a bit more personality than in the first book, and it's enjoyable. I'm personally fond of giving Moiraine a bigger place in the show then in the books: she's a mysterious character that knows more than the EF folks, and she's kind of underused in some books. Rosamund Pike is excellent in her role.
The ending of the season is a bit weaker than I had hoped, mostly due to Covid issues. However, it does set up a lot of interesting threads for the next season, which I'll be excited to watch!

Rosamund Pike as Moiraine is amazing. All the characters have not yet been revealed, but this is just the beginning. I think that for this reason the series was immediately renewed for a 2nd season. Each episode is dynamic with unexpected plot twists: you sit and watch and at some point "Aaaa, what the ...". I even signed up for metacritic to leave a positive review! Seriously, I don’t understand people who say the show is bad. Advise then what a good fantasy genre!))) Books are books, a serial is a serial, it does not have to correspond to the written books. What a bunch of whiney babies in here. (As usual.) "They changed something I liked from the books! Waaah! 0 out of 10."

Robert Jordan is one of the most long-winded, boring, overwrought writers ever. I guess if you like learning about every piece of clothing, every piece of furniture, every single item in every single meal, more than you like getting to the fricking point and reading a story... Well then I guess you're a total nerd with bad taste in writing. AKA a Robert Jordan fan. Jordan's also terrible at writing characters. Hey, did you hear that Nynaeve is stubborn? Hey, hey did you hear that Nynaeve is stubborn? (The repetition is a dig on Jordan, which I have to explain for the Jordan fans.) Cuz if you didn't, RJ will remind you every single time he brings up the character even if you're 10 books into his horrendously bloated story!

Sad thing is, the story is good and the world-building is good. So, what Amazon have done here is a massive favor to Robert Jordan by throwing out a ton of junk and turning his bloated mess into a tight, fast-paced, fun fantasy while keeping all the cool world-building and the overall adventure and power-fulfilment fantasy that TWOT has always been. Seriously, TWOT has always been for teen boys. The main character literally spends five or more books pining between a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead. I mean AYFKM? If you're an adult and you're here giving low scores and whining about them changing Jordan... Oof. Maybe it's about time you read some real literature in your life? Nerd.

This is a good TV show. Jordan is no sacred cow. Amazon have done what they needed to take a bloated monstrosity and make it into a pacey TV script. If you can't get that you need to grow tf up. Nerd.

Then you just have all the pathetic keks/racists/losers (same thing) who only come here to cry about the show being "woke" simply because the cast isn't all white. Like are you for real? No one hears you, no one cares. Every show and movie from now to eternity will feature a diverse cast. And I want you to know I enjoy your sad, impotent fury in the face of this fact. =)

The game of "oh, I remember that" and "what, how dare they change THAT" is very entertaining. FX are maybe a little intrusive, but they do a pretty decent job of translating various inner monologues into not-too-heavy exposition.

The society depicted is almost certainly more multi-hued, multi-cultural, and socially diverse than what Jordan wrote, but this is 2021, not 1990, and not everyone is a white male heterosexual anymore.

I will certainly keep watching, waiting to see some of my favorite characters walk on stage in due course.

As a WoT reader since 2001, I am a huge fan of this series and of the work of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

Given the challenges this book series was bound to face if/when it was adapted to screen, I think this adaptation is doing quite well. There have certainly been changes--some I don't entirely agree with--but thus far none have been what I would consider deal-breaking changes. The changes I don't agree with, I do understand their point of view.

The acting has been excellent so far. The production value and the care put into visually creating Robert Jordan's world are clearly apparent. I've been especially impressed by the costuming and the soundtrack so far.

Can't wait to see more of this series. Us readers have been waiting a very long time to see this story on-screen, and so far, I'm generally very happy with what I've seen.

If you're into fantasy, this is the show for you. Book 1 is heavily LoTR inspired and you'll see that in the first season. The show branches out fairly quickly and is faithful to the general plot/structure of the books. That said, it *is* an adaption, but imo, a good one. The show reaches its tone/footing in episode 4 and only gets better episode after episode. As a book reader/fan of 30 years, adaption wise it looks to be done as well as LoTR and the Harry Potter (3+) movies were done. One of the writers (Brandon Sanderson) and the original writer's widow & editor are involved btw. Should say enough! Expand

Plenty money was spent, and the acting is perfectly fine. For any Brandon Sanderson fans out there; shows like this getting mediocre support is why nothing Brandon Sanderson has been made. Fans are cutting off their nose to spite their face. I know some people have strong opinions regarding the theatrical vs the books. BUT fans of high fantasy are not going to get mroe of this unless there is a supportive amrket for high fantasy. I read the book and thought they are better than average. Only 3 and 4 episodes released at time of my revie and WoT is sitting at 6.2. Makes me feel like this lack of strong fan support is part of the reason Brandon Sander (my personal fav for the genre) but also othgers are not going to have their work adapted. I give it a ten because Amazon took a chance with this series and I am glad they did. I would have have this than not having made it at all. I've seen the first 3 episodes so far and I LOVED it. The world is beautiful, the characters are well realised from the books so far, the action is intense and the acting is on point!

I do have a couple issues though. First off is the pacing. It's pretty uneven so far. Sometimes it feels a bit slow and then other times it feels like everything is being rushed, leaving some memorable moments from the book out of the show. That's mainly an issue for episode 1 though. The pacing in episodes 2 and 3 is much better, but not quite there yet.

My other issue is the CGI. Sometimes it looks good and the practicle effects look great. However, there are a couple moments, specifically when it comes to the trollocs that looks a little cheap and wonky. Not awful but not particularly good. And the CGI should be GREAT with this kind of budget.

Overall, I am very pleased with this adaptation so far! It has room to improve and I hope it gets a chance to beyond season 2. Can't wait to watch more!

Perrin and Rand both look the part, but have some room to grow in their performance (Perrin spends a lot of time with the same scrunched look on his face, Rand occasionally comes off as a petulant brat rather than a young man out of his depth and struggling to cope). Nobody is actively bad.

I'm very happy as a book fan, and the non-readers I've talked to so far also seem entertained. Very excited to see how this goes.

But I realized that this series will divide a lot of opinions, especially from the most demanding people as there are changes from the book to the series. And talking about these changes, I was a little bothered, but I thought it was necessary so that the series doesn't get too stuck or dragged. I believe that A Roda do Tempo is heading to the beginning of a great saga that is to come, I just wanted to ask Amazon to improve the CGI, in this I have to say a little more ''negative'' the fight scenes are a a little exaggerated and with some flaws that are immediately noticeable, I'm looking forward to the new episodes and I will highly recommend this series. Other than a couple of small things I think they captured the feel of the series well! Great casting and performances by all the main actors as well. If they can smooth out some of the issues like pacing it has great potential.

Great character book to screen adaptation with a strong beginning to a huge story that just gets better! Shouldn’t be compared to other fantasy series as The Wheel Of Time is its own thing entirely.

Excellent. Great casting, world building with a true sense of scale. Epic. Given the wealth of material available, looking forward to many seasons of potentially great on screen fantasy.

The TV show has some pacing issues, especially in the 1st episode but 2nd and 3rd episodes pick up and it flows better. Acting is on point, soundtrack is great (the main theme!) and I like the lighting and coloring of the sets — it's nice to see a fantasy that isn't washed out as so many others. I also like that many special effects are practical, however, some CGI could be better. The TV show definitely has a potential to be great. Expand

The visuals are stunning, the actors embody their characters deeply and convey emotions and inner feelings long thought "unadaptable", and the world feels real and vibrant. Every change from the books feels considered, and doesn't make the cut unless it makes sense for the world and improves the story in this new medium. Frankly, I expected to have more to complain about. What criticisms I do have are that for new viewers, the first episode can feel like a lot of set-up (not sure how many can still remember the first few episodes of season 1 of Game of Thrones before it became a global hit, but the exposition is on that level). In that first episode, there's plenty of action and exposition but not a whole lot of character. Don't let that fool you, though; the next two episodes use that setup incredibly well and spring straight into a rollicking story and deep character development. For readers of the books, the first episode can feel very fast paced (we're used to all this happening over a longer time period), but from the people I've asked who are non-book readers this doesn't seem to be an issue. Overall the showrunner, cast, and crew have shown that they can adapt this story faithfully and with the appropriate changes needed for the medium. Given how incredibly widely loved this book series is, the depths and breadth of the plot through 14 whole books, and the satisfying conclusion to the series itself, the fact that they've shown their ability to adapt it so well means we are in for an absolutely fantastic ride as the rest of this story is brought to life. I can't wait, and I'm so happy to be able to go on this journey with you all. Expand

Really enjoying it so far. Pacing in the first episode was a little odd, but it improves in later episodes. A lot of potential here.

Fantastic adaptation of a classic. Everything I've seen so far is very well done and high quality. Writing, dialog, and effects all work.
