Season 2 focus on character development and fails. I never got attached to anybody, the characters have too much klischees. The whole bridge crew have problems of a teenager and dont behave as adults and are loosing credibility that way. Its still not a bad show, but far away of being remarkable. Season 2 is not very good. I was excited after season 1 and after they said they would have a bigger budget for season 2 but so far it is terrible. The story is no longer interesting and focuses way too much on soap opera like character development that makes it impossible to get attached to ANY of the charcters. I was close to liking them by the end of season 1 but season 2 has made me hate every character for one reason or another, especially the new security chief who is a bad actor with a bad attitude that shows up very clearly on screen. Its like season 1 they had a bunch of good ideas that gave me hope and then season 2 rolls in and they start pandering to social justice in order to play it safe. The show, at this point (up to the latest episode 3/1/2019), is just a less funny, live action family guy set in space. The doctor was a cool character in season 1 and then suddenly they make her into an idiot for season 2. I find myself watching every new epsidode now saying either "why would they ever have done that?" or "are you kidding me, im supposed to buy this story?". The things they do to move the plot sometimes are just absolutely mindless and hard to watch. Its like theres a new writing staff for season 2 that has never written anything scifi or funny. Seth, I was so stoked for this show. Season 1 left me pining for more. Season 2 left me wishing it never came back. Who knows, maybe they are just pandering to keep the show on air and we will get a great season 3, but I sincerely doubt it. Expand

The show is juvenile and the (few) jokes tend to fall flat, are amazingly predictable, as are the story elements. The miscasting of most of the crew as well as the logical dissonance between them acting that disfunctionally while surviving the rigors of space is far too much of a suspension of disbelief. Talla (Szohr) replacing Xelayan (Sage) was a terrible casting mistake. She is nearly as frail looking (physically) but does not have the same presence, so the void is palpable.

In season two it does hit some points where it is just copying just enough elements of past ST episodes (across all series to avoid copyright charges) and achieves moments of respectability. However those rare episodes are destroyed with ones like A Happy Refrain (episode 6).

I miss the promise of the series premier when the only truly memorable joke was told (anti-banana ray), and the only real comedic action was taken (killed a ship with tree). Since then it has been all downhill. For the shills handing out 10s, if this is so great why are the viewer numbers closing in on the cancellation range? The numbers never lie, and at this rate the show will be axed by Fox, never seeing season three. I know I am not going to waste any more time hoping MacFarlane can figure out what kind of a show he wants to make. At this stage, I think the South Park joke of Seth using "idea balls" to create random story points are far more likely. That he is using a tank of Manatee to combine them is still pretty unlikely.

What a massive shift from the first season, it has now become a romantic drama set on a star ship, the writing is awful and it looks like it has no budget. A real shame this had potential.

The second season of the Orville varied in quality wildly. The first half barely felt like a space show, focusing entirely on the crew. Most of the episodes lacked any sort of backdrop/plot. The episodes after Identity, however, were noticeably higher quality. Situations were more original, and writing had more care.
