    I am happy that the postive vibe of Star Trek has returned, although the writing and acting is not as strong as in the days of TNG. But what not is, can still come, although reaching Picard-level is not possible i am afraid.

    I really hope they will find a more refined way of humor in stead of the childish rudeness and swearing that constantly feels like something that doesnt fit.     This age of HD tv makes the furniture look cheap, although i assume, back in the days it was cheaper. I also hope they will find a way to improve the sound of the voices. It sounds like they are in a studio with nothing on the walls and not in a ship where you would expect they would have pleasant acoustics.    … Expand

    Worst of both worlds; weak humor and weak drama. WHY didn't he go straight comedy on this?! Why try to make a lightweight Trek clone, rather than a farce like Angie Tribeca, Airplane, Spaceballs, A Touch of Cloth...even Family Guy? This is one season and done.

    This show's great, the "professional critics" need to lube up being so dry they can't even recognize a fun well made Trek send up when they see one. I'd say Orville is at least twice as good as Enterprise ever was.

    When I first watched this I was expecting something like Galaxy Quest in a Spaceballs style, not Star Trek the college years. So a few days ago I watched the first 2 episodes again and found that I liked it.
    It is Star Trek at its core with a tongue in cheek approach.     I think everybody thought that this show will be just a parodic comedy full of bad jokes. Nobody expected a legit light sci Fi show (although if anybody bothered to check, Seth MacFarlane gave an interview in which he said that the show was not a spuf but a legit thing). I like it, it has some edginess in it, the characters are normal people in stressful working environment withI think everybody thought that this show will be just a parodic comedy full of bad jokes.     Right now im feeling this is just ok not bad.
    But give it some time it has the potential to become a cult series if they improve it, we all knew this was going to get crappy professional reviews best ignore those they would not know a good tv show if they were PAID to review it.

    Yes, I know, GALAXY QUEST borrowed heavily from Trek as well. But since it was a parody of Trek and Trekkies it made more sense. How are you to satirize Trek and Trekkies with being similar too Trek?

    ORVILLE isn't a parody of Trek. It's Trek trying to be funny. And this is why watching this show makes me feel DIRTY. I'm watching someone steal a show I love and cashing in on lame jokes. If Trek wanted to do this, okay, but I don't think this should be allowed by entities outside of the trademark.

    I know. You don't believe me. So suppose I told you there was a new comedy on NETFLIX called BERGFELD. Bergfeld is a Brooklyn cartoonist with an extremely popular cartoon about a Jewish guy like himself living in Brooklyn. In the cartoon are his three real life best friends and building neighbors --

    1. Alanna -- his cute but sassy ex-wife.
    2. Louie Castanzoni -- his grade school Italian American friend who's as macho as he's insecure
    3. Creamer -- a bald odd ball wackjob friend who gave up porn to become a mad home inventor

    What makes Bergfeld different that Seinfeld is that it sometimes has very dramatic moments.

    You don't think that's a lawsuit? Think again. It's turning a brand into a genre and copying it too closely. So once you can get past all of this --

    -- you realize this sorry show is Seth's way of playing Captain and sitting in the Captain's chair. We get too much of this these days. Jimmy Fallon isn't an awesome talk show host. He's a guy playing out his childhood dream of being Johnny Carson.

    I have honestly never really felt compelled to write a review before, but I think this deserves one! Because I honestly think the critics are wrong! I've only seen the two episodes to air so far, and they're funny, cute, and have a lot of heart. Yeah you probably have to like Seth Macfarlane and cheesy syfy to enjoy the show, but I do, and so do a lot of people.     Never felt compelled to write a review. Great show , critics are wrong . Family guy meets Star Trek . Hope fox doesn't blow this like they did other shows only to bring them back. Show has great possibilities.

    I love this show, I don't remember a time I have disagreed with the critics more. It's fun and easy to watch and makes me feel all warm and tingly inside. Star Trek with testicle and infidelity jokes, I mean come on, what more can you ask for!

    I thought the first episode was a lot of fun, I read some really negative reviews but it was pretty good. It wasn't all that funny (which is kind of important I guess) but it set up the show in a interesting way and some of the characters are really entertaining(my actual honest score: 7.5)

    As someone who has seen almost every Star Trek episode (except TOS), I actually really enjoy this so far. I have no idea why it's being hammered by critics. The hour long format is perfect, and allows slightly more involved stories. I never took Star Trek seriously enough to go to a convention or measure the physical aspects of the ship, but appreciated the interesting sci-fi plotAs someone who has seen almost every Star Trek episode (except TOS), I actually really enjoy this so far. I have no idea why it's being hammered by critics. The hour long format is perfect, and allows slightly more involved stories. I never took Star Trek seriously enough to go to a convention or measure the physical aspects of the ship, but appreciated the interesting sci-fi plot situations, characters, and philosophical approach. The two episodes of this show so far beat out the reboot movies for me. I'm not the biggest McFarlane-show fan, but the jokes aren't machine gunned down our throats like his others and I actually did laugh more often than not. If you're expecting a McFarlane comedy, you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting "serious" Star Trek, you'll be disappointed. But if you want something that straddles that line and pays comedic homage while being intriguing and having the "curious wonder" aspect of Star Trek, you should really enjoy it.… Expand

    Wow, this is a great show, particularly for Trekkies. The humor is not ROFL (not supposed to be), but light-hearted and just enough to get the parody of the Star Trek series. I was surprised that the special effects and filming was up to par with other science fiction shows. The characters are likable and the series entertaining.     "Finally!" is the most accurate comment to give this show. There is finally a true successor to Star Trek. Not in the sense of the newer Star Trek; more like classic Star Trek but with intentional comedy. The critics giving this show hate are horrible. It is not simple slapstick, but is instead taking time to develop interesting characters while incorporating well timed jokes alongside a"Finally!" is the most accurate comment to give this show. There is finally a true successor to Star Trek. Not in the sense of the newer Star Trek; more like classic Star Trek but with intentional comedy. The critics giving this show hate are horrible. It is not simple slapstick, but is instead taking time to develop interesting characters while incorporating well timed jokes alongside a rich and intriguing story.     Good show, some great nostalgia for me- the intro, the score, the ship itself, all very nice homages to trek. And even beyond the trekkiness, its a lighthearted show with decent production values and a good mix of comedy and drama. Based on the 2 episodes that have aired so far, this show get's a thumbs up from me.

    I dont get the critical consensus. Why must this show decide if its a    Good show, some great nostalgia for me- the intro, the score, the ship itself, all very nice homages to trek.     The whole atmosphere of the show feels just right. Even the lighting and the music tickles the nostalgia bone for Trek fans, while giving us imaginative spins on older ideas. The pacing is great, sucking you in and making you chuckle through the first half of the episode, and then giving you some action or drama at the end. Everything feels fresh and warm; it's like comfort food for sci fi nerds, and the amusing thing is it actually sticks MORE to Gene Roddenberry's original vision of a Trek future than the newer Trek attempts have.

    Unlike some comedies, I want to see what happens to the characters. I want to see them succeed. They play off each other in a way that shows really nice promise for character development and actor chemistry. If you go into this show looking for laughs every minute, you'll be disappointed. If you expect a straight up parody, you'll be disappointed. It's more akin to something like Scrubs or Bojack Horseman; strong themes, with gags and flippancy thrown in, but without ever really breaking away from the internal logical boundaries they've set for themselves. The absurdities only really come from the realities, sort of like The Office, but in space.

    Do not listen to the critics on this one. They are way off the mark here.    … Expand

    Wow. I almost always agree with the consensus of critics, but not this time. This is a really fun and funny show. I gave it a chance because I thought the trailer was funny. Glad I did, because the first two episodes have been really great. Not every show has to have the depth of The Leftovers or Twin Peaks to be considered a successful endeavor.

    I really wanted to like the show and I'm not quite ready to give up on it yet it just seems to be a show sure what it wants to be . I hate that sloppy pop culture references they make which just totally kicks me out of it being a science-fiction show . The writing needs serious work.

    It is ultra poor man's Star Trek; which also tries to be funny. It fails on both fronts. It is barely funny. I'll watch another episode to see if it gets better. I think it will get cancelled soon.

    I am a huge ST fan and I loved this. These critics are nuts and I think they wrote their opinions expecting the public would hate it and now they look the fool. The graphics for the show may not have been top notch, but what season 1 of any sci fi series had high funding? I gave it an 8 for this first ep, only because I felt that there needs to be a little work on timing of jokes and finding that perfect balance between comedy and drama that they are going for. I think that given time the show will find its footing and has the potential to be a great show with a 7 year run. Unless of course FOX gives it their usual sci-fi treatment. Just ask Joss Whedon. Anywho, I am looking forward to watching more of this season and I'm fully expecting to see improvements in writing and timing as the crew learns to work together.
    Also, I was excited to see the actress that played Cassidy Yates on DS9 as a main character (Med officer). I hope they get as few more ST alums on there to play parody roles. Would be great to see Patrick Steward play a funny character or a washed up captain to contrast his ST role. I'm sure he would do it.    … Expand

    Until I saw my first episode of The Orville, not since Firefly have I wanted to watch an outer space show. What in the world can the critics be thinking? This show is brilliant. Diversity of characters, humor, special effects, acting, interior design ;o) I love it!!! Please jump on the bandwagon and save this show from critics with an obvious dearth of humor genes. I love The Orville.Until I saw my first episode of The Orville, not since Firefly have I wanted to watch an outer space show. What in the world can the critics be thinking? This show is brilliant.     Loved it. I find some of seths stuff hit and miss, Don't like Ted but love family guy. This was an extremely fun show if you like spoofy stuff. If you liked galaxy quest you'll probably like this.

    Classic case of professional critics having no sense of humor and being way too serious. This show is a remarkably good, lighthearted poke at the whole of the Star Trek franchise. It does not in any way denigrate, but in fact, pays homage to the franchise while providing nice, escapism, off beat humor that is quite enjoyable. IGNORE THE CRITICS ON THIS ONE!!

    While some of the pilot's dialogue was clumsy, and the characters still in the process of finding themselves; the relatively straight foward plot moved along at a watchable pace, and the show did a nice job introducing the characters, the premise and the setting. The humor was on point, never drowning the dramatic elements, but reminding viewers of the levity and self-awareness of the series.

    Wonderful program with tons of room to grow. Looking forward to seeing what adventures The Orville will take us on next.    … Expand

    This is a solid Sci fi show and Star Trek TNG homage, with excellent production values. I felt some of the jokes fell a bit flat and the initial interaction between the two helmsmen felt awkward. Otherwise, I thought it was really enjoyable and worth the time watching it and it was very enjoyable. Will watch again!

Obviously, this show has many parallels to Star Trek, and personally I found the ship designs, officer layout, and other details to be very similar. Some of the critic reviews note this as a con - but personally, I found it enjoyable and comfortable. Being an avid Sci-fi fan, I'm alreadyI ended up watching this show as it was shared to me via a friend's mutual interest in Star Trek. Obviously, this show has many parallels to Star Trek, and personally I found the ship designs, officer layout, and other details to be very similar. Some of the critic reviews note this as a con - but personally, I found it enjoyable and comfortable. Being an avid Sci-fi fan, I'm already familiar with ideas like time travel devices, transporters, shuttlecraft, faster than light space ships, etc. Following this structure does not make the show uninspired or boring, but rather immediately understandable and brings the focus on the social interactions of the show rather than technical ones.

    For a long time, I've speculated and hoped for a show similar to Star Trek, but focused more on the social aspects with a sprinkling of comedy - I imagined something along the lines of How I Met Your Mother, but instead of present time, based on a group of friends on a space ship or attending Starfleet Academy and discussing their lives, careers, and romances. This show is close to that idea, and I can't help but be somewhat excited about that. After viewing the pilot episode, I had trouble stifling a smile during the action sequences and had a few polite laughs at various jokes.

    Most of the comedy is relatively intelligent (not to say I don't like Seth MacFarlane's style, but this type of show is not really conducive to Family Guy or American Dad type humor), and the occasional petty joke or low-brow joke is there but not overpowering or predictable (yet). Personally, I found this balance to work out nicely - the characters feel believable, there is some drama present to add depth to the characters, an interesting twist towards the end (no spoilers), and remind me of how my friends and I would act and talk in similar situations.

    I'm sure there are things that could be better, but I personally think it has started off on the right foot. The science fiction basis is there, the characters are likeable and interesting, the humor is varied but not excessive (like every line is a joke type shows). I'm afraid that Star Trek has such a negative stigma now - with older fans largely disliking the new "reboot" movies and the old shows have not aged well and are perceived as "cheesy," boring, or nerdy. I really hope that more people give this show a chance... I think it really appeals to science fiction fans but not as much to others at face value, which is also why it is named "The Orville" instead of something like "Spaceship Orville" or "Star Comedy Space Adventure" (ha ha) that is more science fiction sounding. I've previewed this show to my girlfriend who has no interest in science fiction whatsoever and she enjoyed it, so I really hope it will catch on because I would just love to have more content for this. Again, I've only seen the first episode so some plot devices may become old or overused as time goes on (such as Family Guy's "oh, just like the time when *flashback*" mechanic that was funny the first few seasons then became constant and boring). To the creators of Orville - thank you, the show is really excellent and I can't wait to see more.     It's not THAT bad, it's just average.
    But painfully so, everything plays by the numbers and jokes fall flat almost all the time...
    Characters are a cliche at best, every situation you already have seen before and it just does not have the tension, the drama, the humor it believes it has.

    I'm not sure what these critics expected but I for one really enjoyed The Orville. They think its a sitcom with scifi added , but its not, its a scifi show that is not stuck up and all about killing that has comedy , and yes its still new but will get better as time goes by.
    And no this is not a paid review.

That's what a pilot of Orville is. A plain and simple story to setup the cast, the world, the tone and the antagonists. By itself it is bad, but as a first episode in a series, it sink you in.     The 1st episode's best jokes were in the trailer and overall it isn't a super funny show but I spent a very enjoyable moment watching it.

    It is refreshing, well acted, has great CGI for a TV show, it doesn't take itself seriously..obviously and it is engaging enough to get you stick to the screen.

    It's basically little more than "Star Trek: The Next Generation" with lame jokes shoehorned in. Plus, it can't seem to decide whether to be a parody of ST:TNG, or a serious rip-off of said show. Ultimately, it comes off as weak Trek cosplay. Avoid!

    ok well I am here to give folks an honest review of this show and the fact is yes I did laugh I wont deny but I expected more funny with seth mcfarlin being the creator of the show however I did have a nice time and will probably stick around if nothing else due to lack of better options on sunday nights I did like the characters and the story but I just wanted more humor

    I watched it with low expectations and was completely impressed. For a S1E1 show it did well. It was never advertised to be a parody or a spoof of Star Trek and I think it did a great job as an homage. Its not Star Trek but you cant do a Sifi show where people are in a ship without referencing Star Trek a little.

    The show looks like it could have potential if only it had some writers. I did not find any of the humor funny. I was so looking forward to this series. But I was greatly disappointed with this first episode. This first season may be the only one unless this picks up and improves greatly. The story was bland and fell kind of flat with me and I love Sci fi.

    This show captured the true essence of Star Trek so well in fact that, if you remove the gags, it could easily have been an episode of Star Trek. But it wasn't and that is kind of a shame. The gags are very funny in places but fell flat at other times. It seemed as though McFarlane created a Star Trek homage and then shoe-horned in a few jokes. At times when watching I found myself hoping there wouldn't be another joke anytime soon. Not because they weren't funny, but because I didn't want my immersion broken. The story in this episode is simple but there is a spark of inspiration in how it unfolded that gives me hope for the series.

    Most of the main characters were set up well and I found them all intriguing to varying degrees. Some have alot of potential and I feel it will make or break the show how well they are written and performed in the season ahead. MacFarlane's Captain and his ex-wife first officer aren't part of that list as I thought they came off a bit bland, though I was impressed with both the actors when they needed shift gear to a more dramatic tone. Rather, it's the supporting cast I speak of here.

    For what the show is, it is done really well so I'm giving it a 9. The jokes didn't always land and at times jarred with the main plot but it made me laugh and felt like a quality parody that really embraced it's source material with a clear passion.    … Expand

    Just what I thought. Critics just couldn't wait to s#*t on this and casual viewers loved it. Well maybe not love, but they didn't hate it as much. I thought it was nice, not thrilling, but nice. It had a few laughs, had decent production values.

    The new Star Trek can probably only hope to be as 'Trek' as Orville.

    I came into watching this thinking it was going to be horrible based on the reviews I read, but was happily surprised by how engaging the first episode was. For some reason people were expecting this to be like Angie Tribeca in outer space or something, but it was actually a fun mix of drama and humor.     Ever since star trek went off the air, the world has been missing sci fi hope, optimism and a sliver of the roddenberry vision. The Orville reminds us what the future could look like when are the best versions of ourselves. TNG + Galaxy Quest + MASH + Farscape. This is everything I could have hoped for and more.

    Enjoyed this new series. The jokes were not great but the atmosphere and cast as well as production quality made up for any lack of humor. The universe is interesting and I would like to see more looking forward to the next episode. One of the best pilot episodes of a new series I have seen.

    Honestly I’m baffled by the harsh reviews from critics the Orville is great!

    What I will agree with the critics, is the Orville isn’t Galaxy Quest, it’s not a laugh out loud, laugh a minute silly comedy; to my surprise, it’s very, much Star Trek: The Next Generation, with a bit of light relief. This is the Star Trek show I’ve long been waiting for.

    I am one of the original Trekkies. I have been a faithful fan of Star Trek since the 1960's. I also enjoy Star Wars. I also enjoyed Galaxy Quest. I like Sci Fi. I like humor. I loved Ep 1 of The Orville and am ready for more of the same. Beautiful looking show that is genuinely entertaining.

This show captures the feel of Trek and adds in good interpersonal relationships and enjoyable humor. The first episode is a little rough around the edges, but that's to be expected from a pilot episode.     The show is fun, optimistic, and it has the potential to become great sci-fi. Most critics claim it's a Star Trek ripoff, and while it certainly has many TNG elements, it's casual dialogues and character interactions reminded me of Stargate SG1. I hope it goes on, as with just one episode you can tell it's going to get great.

    I think the critics may have missed the mark a little bit - this isn't a slapstick comedy - it's mostly a drama that is a bit funny at times. The special effects are top notch, the acting seems decent for a start and overall the premier was enjoyable.

    Whilst like all shows in this genre, the first episode is a bit rocky. However, despite the newness and the oddities shown, clearly inspired by MacFarlane's previous creations and work, the pilot shows the possible beginnings of a story surrounding the captaincy, as well as establishing new races and characters in their roles. Personally, I am looking forward to more of this universe.

The Orville is everything I expected from Seth MacFarlane and more. The supporting cast is flawlessly flawed and heartwarmingly normal.     I loved it. It was funny and family-friendly. It hearkened back to a more noble time in television. Television today needs to loosen up and get away from gritty realism. BSG and "New" Trek is fun, but it's time for something different. ... Happy Arbor Day!

    I didn't expect anything from this show and the first episode really surprised me. I thought it was great. It is a little rough around the edges but it made me laugh a bunch of times and i was really entertained. I'm definitely going to stick with it this season!

A lot of exposition on who the characters are, they establish the relationships, they introduce the bad guys, etc. Understandably the first episode is a little slow and weirdly paces. We get to meet the bad guys (The Krill), and we get to meet many of the players.

    If you are a Trek fan you'll feel like this belongs in your ST:TNG universe. The color pallet, the ship designs, the rooms, everything just feels like home. Just, maybe newer. It's apparent that this isn't some cheap knock off of the TNG universe, but it is a well crafted love song from someone who deeply cares for it.

    This series may not be for everyone. The jokes are a little out of place for the series. The pacing was off, and the characters feel forced. However, if you watch Season 1 of TNG or pretty much any show you can say the same thing. The Orville will become a staple of everyones evening viewing as soon as they find their pace. I think that will happen before the end of season 1.

    What a refreshing pilot! Seth does a great job of bringing fun back to Star Trek.

    The effects are stellar. The cast has good chemistry. The plot of the pilot was simple and yet innovative. The manage to subvert classic tropes without having to go abouts hanging a lampshade on them. I'm excited to see where they go with this. There wasn't weak link character in the bunch.     I can see how all the hack critics are going to slam this show for it not being parody like Family Guy, but actually being a spiritual successor to Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, something we haven't seen in a very long time.

    I wasn't super impressed with the pilot, but it kept my attention throughout and I can definitely see the potential. Good acting, good characters, great effects, okay story. Let's see what Macfarlane does with it going forward. I am cautiously optimistic after the first episode.

    It's great, i love it! It's like a funny Star Trek, i enjoyed every second of the first episode, cant wait to see more. The character progression is spot on, effects are OK and the general art of the ships and stations feels very sci-fi'y to look at. I will keep watching the next episodes and recommend it to my friends, im seeing a bright and funny future in Orville.

    Thie first episode was superb - my family and I loved it. We will watch every episode guaranteed. Thanks so much to everyone involved in making it - I've missed this style of show SO much since Star Trek went off the air.

I dislike laugh tracks but Orville felt like it really needed one to create some atmosphere. The actors didn't seem too much into their characters, and the storyline was just meh. It kept feeling like a really (mediocre) legit Star Trek show, which is exactly what it shouldn't feel like. It should be over the top, not semi serious. I'm not sure what they can do to save it, but I'll give it a few episodes hoping they just got off to a rough start.     I really enjoyed The Orville. I was worried it was going to be non-stop puns and one-liners, I enjoy that in cartoons, but find it hard to watch actors do it non-stop. The Orville actually tries to be a space exploration TV show with some humor thrown in.

    he characters act or at least think more like real people around today than the culturally evolved Roddenberry Star Trek TNG characters. That seems to irk a lot of people, but who's to say human's are suppose to act that way in the future. Sure, they're a bit too quick with the humor to be realistic, but it's still comedic TV.

    The plot of the pilot isn't super original, but the point of the pilot isn't the plot, but as an introduction to the show. It's arguably better than TNG's pilot episode.

    Many feel the jokes fall flat, which is subjective. I don't enjoy Family Guy, but laughed at about half the jokes in this show. Others really loved it.

    People who don't like the "dated" look of the show with it's non-gritty bright design aren't getting the Star Trek TNG roots of the show.

    In summary, it's not super serious, but should be enjoyed by sci-fi fans, and Trek fans in particular.    … Expand

    This show did its intended job ... it was funny & entertaining. The cast, set, and story line were spot on. The "pro critics" should either get new jobs or stop reviewing shows of the genre. Generally speaking, pro critics know nothing about entertainment. Fire them all.

    A Trek-inspired show clearly made with love by huge Trek fans. If you love TNG then you most likely will enjoy this show. While there some poor jokes here and there that may last too long, it is heavily outweighed by the chemistry of the cast and the influence of classic-era Trek. Optimistic and funny, really looking forward to more!

I really enjoyed the way they handled the science with a pretty good attention to detail. There were only a few things I noticed that were used that seemed a little far fetched or didn't make sense.     judging from the pilot, this show is dead already. it's not funny, the cgi is lame and the cast is boring. The pilot was intensely stupid with hopeless villains. Its a poor parody of star trek, might have worked as an animated show though.

The humor is not humorous, the adventure is not adventurous, the story line is just plain dumb, and the acting is at the level of a junior high school production. The special effects are the best part. That probably explains why so much of the footage features exterior views of the Orville gliding through space.     I think it's obvious that there's a disconnect between Critics and the target audience. It's why I have stopped even caring what they think.

    I really enjoyed this first episode. It felt real, unlike how Star Trek comes across sometimes . I mean there are times during serious situations where you just have to make a joke to relieve the tension. This is exactly how this show felt.     Special effects were pretty good and the characters were believable and you could tell they had a good rapport. The alien designs are also very good. I love that blob in the hallway. And the Ogre? The actors already have great chemistry (especially the helmsman and navigator) and the dynamic Ed and his wife is hilarious and yet heartfelt at the end. I'm very pleased and look forward to the coming season.    … Expand

    This show is bright, optimistic and a real breath of fresh air in a genre that has gone dark, serious and gritty - whether we wanted it to or not. If it cuts back on the forced gags, let's the humour flow more naturally and concentrates on sci-fi, it could become a real gem. Good luck Seth. I applaud the vision and critics be damned.

Many critics seem to be complaining that the show was not consistently funny. This would be a fair complaint if the show had many jokes, most of which fell flat. However, the fact is that the show has a handfull of jokes sprinkled throughout the episode, most of which are chuckle-worthy throwaway lines, and character-building moments.

    However, misunderstandings don't warrant a 9/10 on metacritic. What is actually worth watching about this show?

    The Characters:
    Each character presented in this is fairly well defined and has remarkably interesting synergy with each other. The writing is snappy enough to be interesting while distinct between characters as to not seem as if it's grasping for quotable lines. While the writing is nowhere near on-par with the likes of Xavier, it helps carry the story along fairly nicely, and retains that genuine charm which Star Trek performed so distinctly and prominently in its formative years.

    The Production:
    The show, simply put, looks like Star Trek. It is clear that the editors and effects artists put great thought into making it look authentically like a Star Trek show. Everything from the shots to the lighting evokes the classic style of Star Trek to a tee (though perhaps more DS9 than TNG). While by no means do visuals save or doom a show, the effort put into the aesthetics of the show demonstrate the care which went into it. This work is all in service of portraying a familiar, yet distinct and genuine science fiction world, with meshes of old and new imagery.

    The Plot:
    Though little has been shown as to the overarching narrative, and whether or not the show is serialized, episodic, or a mix of the two, the pacing and content of the plot in this show is strangely compelling. You'd think from what is ostensibly a parody show that the writing plays the whole thing fairly loosey goosey, but in practice, the narrative actually has some stakes. The characters are likeable enough as to where you want to see them make it through to the end, and it is made clear from the offset that characters can and will die if something goes wrong. The only issue I found in the story was that the enemy alien race, The Krill (?), seemed a bit too grunt-y to be considered an actual threat. They're quickly dispatched by the main cast, which is by no means filled with combatants. However, given the glimpses we've seen of the future episodes, this is by no means the biggest threat planned for the cast.

    Overall, I'd say the show is enjoyable so far. I may amend the score in future if the quality declines. However, in a time where we haven't seen anything really interesting come of Star Trek in decades, seeing something like this which tastefully and respectfully evokes the charm of the old show is, perplexingly, a breath of fresh air. Definitely give it a go for yourself.    … Expand

    Except for Norm Macdonald as the voice of an alien made of what looked like quivering gelatin, I didn’t find much that was amusing about The Orville’s space odyssey. ... From its opening scene with Victor Garber assigning Ed his ship to the final, unsuspenseful shootout with alien enemies, The Orville moved from one lull to another.
