There's just something comforting and familiar about it. Do not go into this show expecting Family Guy. This is a serious sci fi show with comedic elements, not a comedy with sci fi elements. Think of this show as TNG if the show followed a crew of run-of-the-mill folks on an average ship instead of an exceptional crew on a top-of-the-line ship. The show deals with complicated issues in the same way that TNG used to but it lightens things up by letting the audience see that people are still people, no matter how advanced the society gets. All that being said, I feel like the best thing this show has going for it is that isn't bogged down with Star Trek's baggage. It gets to do all the fun stuff from Trek and the stuff the fans love, but it doesn't have to worry about violating decades of canon. If you are a fan of Trek, you should REALLY give this show a watch. You won't regret it. Expand

Of course the critics don't get it. And I couldn't be happier about that. This is the Star Trek parody that Star Trek fans get and love. It's an homage in its most sincerest form that reminds us that even the future can be funny.

    This show is amazingly good.

Other than that, really fine acting, the graphics are top notch, and the scoring is really good - it's used sparingly and therefore is more impactful.

Highly recommended. It's so good that I expect Fox to cancel it any minute.

As I said, I had my doubts, I thought it would be a full blown parody of Star Trek, which I wouldnt have cared for much, but its far far FAR from that.
What would best describe it? Star Trek. But massively expanded on its humor. But no parody at all. Maybe here and there a few puns, but nothing that would make the show look ridiculous. It actually has very serious topics in its episodes, which bring tears to my eyes due to laughter (seriously, some of the best jokes and situational comedy I have ever seen) and due to being such a contrast to the propaganda that is Discovery and blowing it out of Star Trek waters, which is ultimately why it gets a 10 and not a 9 from me.

You love every single character instantly. Yes, every single one of them. They are original, they are diverse, they are good actors, they all fit together well, the dialogs are witty, intelligent, funny and even as deep as Star Trek on its best day. The chemistry is simply amazing.

With Discovery, Star Trek has been raped by the neoliberal ideology to unrecognizability, but this is a more than worthy successor! And thats also why I am not surprised at all, that those very neoliberal "critics" are trashing it that much. They know exactly its 1000 times better than Discovery, but doesnt offer any propaganda value for their side, in fact exposes it.

I can only recommend to watch it yourself instead of trusting these paid demagogues. You will laugh, and you will recognize Star Trek in it.

The Orville is funny, dramatic, well written, has really good, likable characters and shows diversity not like other TV-Shows, who always try to shove it up your throat. The Orville is the better Star Trek nowadays and I´m sure Gene Roddenberry would be proud. Go on!

Whilst like all shows in this genre, the first episode is a bit rocky. However, despite the newness and the oddities shown, clearly inspired by MacFarlane's previous creations and work, the pilot shows the possible beginnings of a story surrounding the captaincy, as well as establishing new races and characters in their roles. Personally, I am looking forward to more of this universe.

At first, hearing about Seth MacFarlane coming out with a Galaxy Quest style TV show intrigued me. If anyone knows Seth MacFarlane, you must know that he's a Star Trek fan. He's provided audio commentary on the "Cause and Effect" episode on the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5 Blu-Ray, and he guest-starred in 2 Star Trek: Enterprise episodes. Between appreciating his humor style in shows like Family Guy and in movies like Ted and A Million Ways to Die in the West, I decided to give this show a shot.

I admit, I was a little skeptical after the pilot. It could either go really well or really bad. Fortunately, after watching episodes 2, 3, and 4, I have decided that I like this show so much that I will purchase it on BluRay when it comes out.

In a nutshell, this is basically Star Trek: The Next Generation with Seth MacFarlane's humor. It goes hand-in-hand. It even belongs in the Star Trek universe by replacing words like "Enterprise" to "Orville", "cutting beam" to "phaser beam", and "Federation" to "Union". Look at the uniforms..very similar to Trek. This is also a good opportunity for amazing directors from the Trek franchise, like Brannon Braga and Jonathan Frakes to prosper by directing episodes. I feel if Leonard Nimoy were alive, he'd give this a try as well.

If you like Family Guy and like Star Trek, give this a shot. You won't be disappointed. I give this a 10/10. Perfection and amazing re-watchability in my book. Excited for a Season 2!

Rather then being on a flagship, a vessel of hope for all of humanity, they are on a middle class ship. The ship is smaller, the people less important, but their lives and stories they have are way richer because of this.

Definitely a throwback to the old style star trek, it's got great deadpan humor and is visually pretty cool. If you liked old star trek you'll enjoy this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a show that has shown vast improvement in it's second season. It has somehow managed to explore extremely deep issues like identity and discrimination and become a fascinating study on humanity. Although the characters are not very well defined, the writing manages to make you care deeply about each character. They have managed to take great creative risks this season, such as allowing one main character to leave the series all-together and allowing another main character to become a villain in a wholly unexpected plot twist that puts the entire cast of characters in mortal danger. When it debuted people unfairly assumed it was going to be a slapstick comedy in the style of "Family Guy" but this series is so much more and tackles deep issues with style. Expand

I love this show! I seriously hope it makes it for the long haul. It's a great Star Trek homage, along with basically the typical Seth MacFalane humor. I'm really enjoying it. The storyline is really good. I've seen homages to Star Trek and the Twilight Zone both so far along with hitting on real life issues here and there. Really a wonderful show.

I am amazed at how badly this was reviewed by the professional critics on this site. So many of the new Sci Fi shows as in Star Trek Discovery displays our future as one homogenized politically correct society. The characters in Orville are evolved and also show the same insecurity’s and weaknesses inherent in being human.
Oh yeah and it is really entertaining

Side note: I was initially baffled by how "The Orville" could have a worse Metacritic score than "Star Trek: Discovery"... then I realized that was only for reviews by critics. I guess the modern desire to make everything as dark and twisty as possible wins the day with them. I guess the modern desire to make everything as dark and twisty as possible wins the day with them. And yes, I *am* going to be treating "The Orville" as another Star Trek show in this review, and I feel pretty sure most of those involved in creating "Star Trek" shows over the years would agree (not to mention the fact that several of them are writers and producers on "The Orville" anyway!)
Okay, on to my actual review: I'll start by saying you shouldn't judge this show on the pilot, which simply hasn't figured out how to meld sci-fi action/drama with humor and is filled with supremely awkward, sophomoric gags. However, as the first season progresses, we get something that is actually *better* in some respects than the various Star Trek series: a show in which the humor is just one aspect of showing that these characters (aliens included) have very 'human' weaknesses. They get jealous; they doubt themselves; they have bodily functions(!)
If you've seen an episode or two and are thinking of quitting, PLEASE give it until episode 3 "About a Girl," which in my opinion stands right up there with some of the best all-time Star Trek episodes in terms of its painful exploration of a subject that parallels issues on modern day Earth. [The first comparable Star Trek episode that came to mind was Voyager's "Tuvix."] In a similar vein, episode 7, "Majority Rule," is something every parent should show to their social media obsessed teenagers.
If you're more interested in seeing your heroes put through the emotional wringer, check out episode 10 "Firestorm." And if you're looking for more of an exploration of hard sci-fi, look no further than episode 11, which involves the discovery of a two-dimensional civilization and a reference to the classic novella "Flatland."
I read a review somewhere that wrote "This is the Star Trek series you didn't know you wanted." And I really think that's true. All I can say is: thank you, Seth McFarlane.

Firstly... I am dumbfounded how this has such a low "pro-critic" score compared to Star Trek Discovery... Firstly... I am dumbfounded how this has such a low "pro-critic" score compared to Star Trek Discovery... This show, in my opinion, is by far the superior show, in terms of humour and quality of storylines as well as respect it pays to the format and universe of Star Trek (more than even anything JJ Abrams managed)

I just binge watched the first 4 episodes of The Orville... And, being a person with an internet connection, I naturally couldn't resist the temptation to make my opinions known.

For the uninitiated, The Orville is the latest Seth MacFarlane comedy. Immediately this may be a cause for concern, as his animation has become increasingly stale (although I was a fan of A Million Ways To Die In The West).

And yet, within the space of its trailer, my feelings went from curious to optimistic.

In the end, these initial episodes far exceeded my expectations, actually feeling less like a "typical" sitcom than the trailer suggests... Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of one-liners. But the structure of each episode much more closely resembles that of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine or even Voyager. This actually works incredibly well; as the world is built throughout each episode, the jokes feel funnier as you realise these are people making funny comments in a consistent world, rather than the changing rules of MacFarlane's previous animations. The plots feel like the kind you would find on any past Trek episode, with the humour instead coming from the character's reactions. You could imagine these characters in the actual Star Trek universe, being given a ship because there's no-one else to pilot it. I mean, I'm sure even in the Federation there must be alcoholism, divorce and tension between senior staff...

Of particular note to me was the third episode "About A Girl". Without giving too many spoilers, it surprised me how well it emulated the way Star Trek would present cultural problems... With my only issues being it was so early in the series there wasn't the chance of more character development which was maybe needed for the situation and characters to feel more relatable. Equally, I can see why an episode such as this was broadcast so early... As a signal that this was aiming to be more than a silly comedy, but to derive humour instead from how it follows (and plays with) the situations from Star Trek itself, I feel it was successful. One thing that did shock me was some discussion this episode was so-called "SJW" and pushing some kind of political message... From people who clearly know nothing about Star Trek or the kind of message that Gene Roddenberry tried to convey from his very first season.

Obviously, this show has many parallels to Star Trek, and personally I found the ship designs, officer layout, and other details to be very similar. Some of the critic reviews note this as a con - but personally, I found it enjoyable and comfortable. Being an avid Sci-fi fan, I'm already familiar with ideas like time travel devices, transporters, shuttlecraft, faster than light space ships, etc. Following this structure does not make the show uninspired or boring, but rather immediately understandable and brings the focus on the social interactions of the show rather than technical ones.

For a long time, I've speculated and hoped for a show similar to Star Trek, but focused more on the social aspects with a sprinkling of comedy - I imagined something along the lines of How I Met Your Mother, but instead of present time, based on a group of friends on a space ship or attending Starfleet Academy and discussing their lives, careers, and romances. This show is close to that idea, and I can't help but be somewhat excited about that. After viewing the pilot episode, I had trouble stifling a smile during the action sequences and had a few polite laughs at various jokes.

Most of the comedy is relatively intelligent (not to say I don't like Seth MacFarlane's style, but this type of show is not really conducive to Family Guy or American Dad type humor), and the occasional petty joke or low-brow joke is there but not overpowering or predictable (yet). Personally, I found this balance to work out nicely - the characters feel believable, there is some drama present to add depth to the characters, an interesting twist towards the end (no spoilers), and remind me of how my friends and I would act and talk in similar situations.

I'm sure there are things that could be better, but I personally think it has started off on the right foot. The science fiction basis is there, the characters are likeable and interesting, the humor is varied but not excessive (like every line is a joke type shows). I'm afraid that Star Trek has such a negative stigma now - with older fans largely disliking the new "reboot" movies and the old shows have not aged well and are perceived as "cheesy," boring, or nerdy. I really hope that more people give this show a chance... I think it really appeals to science fiction fans but not as much to others at face value, which is also why it is named "The Orville" instead of something like "Spaceship Orville" or "Star Comedy Space Adventure" (ha ha) that is more science fiction sounding. I've previewed this show to my girlfriend who has no interest in science fiction whatsoever and she enjoyed it, so I really hope it will catch on because I would just love to have more content for this. Again, I've only seen the first episode so some plot devices may become old or overused as time goes on (such as Family Guy's "oh, just like the time when *flashback*" mechanic that was funny the first few seasons then became constant and boring). To the creators of Orville - thank you, the show is really excellent and I can't wait to see more. Fox is notorious for shutting down great sci-fi shows (futurama, firefly) though so... good luck.

did not went in with much expectation ... but apart from some obvious macfarlane humor, it almost feels like a natural extension of Star Trek TNG.
It has reasonable good CGI, some cool characters, does the whole "exporation" part of Star Trek, AND is funny.

Its sad to say but the Orville as a parody of Star Trek actually does a better job filling the Star Trek gap than the current Star Trek Reboot. Beyond that it is independently funny and the characters are surprisingly well crafted. The critics as usual have no idea what is good.

This show has it all. Humor, adventure, fun characters, and blows Star Trek Discovery out of the water. Amazing show that if there is any justice in the universe will be around for many years.

The Orville is the Star Trek I've been wishing for for years. The heart of Trek is (or was!) optimism, a thoughtful exploration of human society, and *humor*. The Orville delivers at warp 11. I don't know what show those idiot critics were watching. If you want a show that makes you think and laugh at the same time, The Orville is for you.

I thought this show was going to be terrible, Guess what I loved it. It really reminded me of my childhood watching TNG. They really captured the essence of Star Trek a feat the new Star Trek movies and TV show cant seem to do. There are just the right amount of jokes and it doesn't kill the show. The ensemble cast is good. My only gripe would be, I wish Seth McFarlane wasn't in it. I knowI thought this show was going to be terrible, Guess what I loved it. The Critics are way off on this way. Orville is an awesome homage to Star Trek in all the best ways. The ship designs are really cool, and so far the plots have been decent.
I hope FOX doesn't pull a firefly and cancel this, because It really is enjoyable.

Love the new series. It's nice to have a show that is fun and not campy and at the same time fills the void until The Expanse returns. The future is not all doom and gloom.

Pre-viewing impressions led me to believe that "The Orville" was going to be a pile of space junk, via most of the reviews left by critics. Sure it's not none stop belly laughs, & at times can be quite serious, nonetheless it is entertaining. I don't think it was intended to be a full blown comedy anyhow - just a Sci-Fi show with a little humour thrown in for good measure, just like other shows of this genre. There's obvious elements taken from past Sci-Fi shows, such as Star Trek, Star Wars & Babylon 5, but that's what makes it likable. I've been a "Trekkie" since I was old enough to understand the storylines & quite frankly I would favour this over the new CBS effort - Star Trek Discovery, having watched both. Give it a chance & ignore the critics, you won't regret it unless you're a big stick in the mud! Expand

As a Trek long time fan, I'm impressed in the way the first four episodes went. Star Trek Orville has a strong cast, a strong story line, and a lot of humor (both flat and funny). They continue to get better every week while maintaining the humor (a mix of funny and flat jokes). You get a 10 score!

This show is great. I hope it goes for 10 seasons. A mix of pure Star Trek Nostalgia, cultural references, character development and Farlane's humor, makes it relevant for today's audience. Was really impressed by this Star Trek clone. Thought it was going to be so so with the light humor, but found that it really updated it with the times. It's as if you added 10% Family Guy with 90% true Star Trek format. Really liked it and really glad to finally have a science fiction show to watch since the late 90's.

LOVED it...... Quite simply it is fun! I´ve watched the first four episodes and crave more. It´s character driven... I already am rooting for several of them!
I watched Star Trek Discovery and was bored to death... Klingons have been a snooze fest since the beginning of time. The Orville is a lot more interesting, fun and thoroughly enjoyable. May it Live Long and bring Prosperity to

AWESOME SHOW!!! A bit of camp and a whole lot of the true soul of Star Trek! I am so glad this show wasn't what I expected it to be (a Family Guy style comedy in space). Screw Discovery - this show is great!

It’s got top-notch special effects and terrific makeup (for its space-alien characters). But it just doesn’t quite gel. At least not yet, anyway.

The show's smirky tone, embodied in MacFarlane's smug frat-boy demeanor as the captain, never quite gels with the universal humanism the episode is aiming for. [18 Sep - 1 Oct 2017, p.27]

Except for Norm Macdonald as the voice of an alien made of what looked like quivering gelatin, I didn’t find much that was amusing about The Orville’s space odyssey. ... From its opening scene with Victor Garber assigning Ed his ship to the final, unsuspenseful shootout with alien enemies, The Orville moved from one lull to another.
