The Orville relies entirely too heavily on its inspiration (mostly Star Trek). It repeat plots, but has nowhere near the caliber of writing required to approach the themes with any of the finesse Star Trek had. To The Orville's credit, the cast and guest stars are killer. Each episode had an interesting backdrop, even if they weren't executed particularly well, or entirely original.

The Orville is a comedy version of Star Trek. It's very funny, but it doesn't only have jokes. It also deals with serious, real-world topics in a mature way.

I don’t get the critics scores. I mean the first 3 episodes, I was like “this is better than I thought it was going to be”, then that 4th episode, I was “wow, that was good”. That episode was a cross between Heinleins (orphan of the stars) and Asimovs (nightfall), but it was well done. Overall this is a good show for what it is meant to be.

Forget all the official TV-critics. If you like Star Trek (and I mean the REAL stuff like The Next Generation) you will embrace it. The Orville is funny, dramatic, well written, has really good, likable characters and shows diversity not like other TV-Shows, who always try to shove it up your throat. The Orville is the better Star Trek nowadays and I´m sure Gene Roddenberry would be proud. Go on!

I don't like Seth MacFarlane, I find his sense of humour crude, childish and unfunny. I know he can deliver good performance but as an "idea guy" I tend to avoid him. So to no surprise, I ignored "The Orville" when it was originally airing, after all, Seth MacFarlane has his hands all over that show and despite me loving the genre I couldn't force myself to watch this. Instead, I decided to go with "Star Trek: Discovery" (check my review, I run away after 2,5 episodes). I was a fool.
"The Orville" is a show that, yes, has the MacFarlane sense of humour here and there, even has some jokes so cringy I had to take pause, but it also has the drama and heart of "Star Trek". Somehow Seth MacFarlane captured the spirit of the trek and locked it in place for this show. The topics, themes, characters all are rich and respectful without pandering to anyone. Something that often goes out the window in comedy shows is lore, yet "Orville" keep its lore intact, they never break it and you can see that a great deal of planning went into creating this universe and its people. I remember the first season of "Deep Space 9" and "The Next Generation" as shows looking for their footing, this isn't the case with "Orville", this show knew from the start what it wanted to do and just did it.
If you like "Star Trek", the real "Star Trek" or even sci-fi, in general, you owe it to yourself to watch this show.

Like the show. It struggles to figure out if its a sci-fi with comedy or a comedy that's sci-fi themed. But with the fun and moral tail it spins its like some of the best of the older Star Trek shows. The kind of show Star trek can't do anymore.

This was another great episode from one of the most underrated shows on TV. I found this episode to be a fun insight into the private lives of the characters on the show and it was a nice break from all of the action. The show works because the writers know when to inject humor and when to pull back from the action and that balance is the reason why the show is slowly becoming popular.

    Some nitpicks:
    - From time to time humor doesnt land (around 1 bad in 10 good jokes ratio), which isnt all that bad over all, but sometimes it can feel bit forced. Which gets better in the late season 1.
    - Some of the alien space ships feel bit too clean, but its not all that hard to get used to.)

Overall its great TV and solid successor to the good old Star Trek TNG.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a show that has shown vast improvement in it's second season. It has somehow managed to explore extremely deep issues like identity and discrimination and become a fascinating study on humanity. Although the characters are not very well defined, the writing manages to make you care deeply about each character. They have managed to take great creative risks this season, such as allowing one main character to leave the series all-together and allowing another main character to become a villain in a wholly unexpected plot twist that puts the entire cast of characters in mortal danger. When it debuted people unfairly assumed it was going to be a slapstick comedy in the style of "Family Guy" but this series is so much more and tackles deep issues with style. Expand

To start off I'm a huge Star Trek fan having grown up on TNG, Voyager, and Enterprise with the last one having a special place in my heart since I was born in 1998. When I first heard about a Star Trek TV show coming out I was really excited about the prospect of revisiting The Federation. Unfortunately, when Star Trek Discovery finally came out I didn't feel the rush of nostalgia I was expecting and hoping for. Instead, I felt nothing. I thought that maybe I just wasn't interested in Trek anymore, not to mention Discovery isn't a very good show. Then I heard about The Orville. I was sceptical at first and didn't give it a shot for a year since I just assumed that it cannot be the good old star trek without its copyright, I was so wrong. From the very first minutes, I felt the same joy I had years ago and I instantly knew that THIS IS STAR TREK! Except for a few awkward jokes here and there, this is like watching TNG or Enterprise for the first time. If you are a Trek fan and you wish a modern version of your nostalgia, this is it. Avoid Discovery, watch this instead.

I guess the modern desire to make everything as dark and twisty as possible wins the day with them. And yes, I *am* going to be treating "The Orville" as another Star Trek show in this review, and I feel pretty sure most of those involved in creating "Star Trek" shows over the years would agree (not to mention the fact that several of them are writers and producers on "The Orville" anyway!)
Okay, on to my actual review: I'll start by saying you shouldn't judge this show on the pilot, which simply hasn't figured out how to meld sci-fi action/drama with humor and is filled with supremely awkward, sophomoric gags. However, as the first season progresses, we get something that is actually *better* in some respects than the various Star Trek series: a show in which the humor is just one aspect of showing that these characters (aliens included) have very 'human' weaknesses. They get jealous; they doubt themselves; they have bodily functions(!)
If you've seen an episode or two and are thinking of quitting, PLEASE give it until episode 3 "About a Girl," which in my opinion stands right up there with some of the best all-time Star Trek episodes in terms of its painful exploration of a subject that parallels issues on modern day Earth. [The first comparable Star Trek episode that came to mind was Voyager's "Tuvix."] In a similar vein, episode 7, "Majority Rule," is something every parent should show to their social media obsessed teenagers.
If you're more interested in seeing your heroes put through the emotional wringer, check out episode 10 "Firestorm." And if you're looking for more of an exploration of hard sci-fi, look no further than episode 11, which involves the discovery of a two-dimensional civilization and a reference to the classic novella "Flatland."
I read a review somewhere that wrote "This is the Star Trek series you didn't know you wanted." And I really think that's true. All I can say is: thank you, Seth McFarlane.

Amazing Show! Was so disappointed by STD which is violent, cruel dishonest - and SO HAPPY when the REAL StarTrek came along in the form of THE ORVILLE. This follows the same trail from TNG+Voyager+DS9 that we all remember where each episode have a moral story, a teaching story, a story that makes us think, and where it pushes the understanding of humanity a bit further.

Despite the premise that the Orville was advertised as a comedy show or a parody on old sci-fi, to me it felt like the better and more intelligent modern star trek series. Some episodes show not just good but brilliant story writing. Something I missed so much on the otherwise well crafted DIS. It is obviously derivative of Star Trek, but this is actually rather welcome considering that the newer Star Trek entries don't have much to do with what Star Trek used to be. Which is why it fills a niche that has been empty for far to long.
It features likable characters, mostly solid dialog, the more positive outlook, the focus on diplomacy and exploration and surprisingly solid social criticism, all of which has been sorely missing from the newer Star trek entries.

The one major thing I would have to criticize is that the humor tends to be way to obvious and rather crude, similar to what you would expect from an american sitcom.
You might think it is a weird criticism that I'd like a Seth MacFarlane parody to take itself more seriously, but considering that the more dramatic moments are done so well by comparison I think it is justified. On that note there isn't as much of this kind of humor in there as you'd expect, which is why it luckily feels more often like Star Trek than Family Guy.
However there are actually some genuinely funny moments hidden in there. Ironically those are when the show doesn't try to be overly funny but rather naturally incorporates more subtle believable humor. It's the kind of humor similar to what you might actually see on TNG, DS9 or Voyager.

In conclusion, seldom have I ever been more positively surprised by a show, especially considering most professional reviews. It manages to capture the feeling of Star Trek much better than Discovery or the Abrams movies could ever hope to and it makes me feel like this is the canonical entry while those are the parody.

Pretty neat looking special effects, decent CGI. The stories are interesting and often there is some interesting moral dilemma that can nest in your thoughts for days.

The characters are likable and it is a joyful experience just to see them talk and interact; the dialogue is almost never annoying or pointless. This is not at all flat humor or goofey sci fi. I can't believe how incredible negative the professional reviewers are being. It's amazing how distant professional reviewers are from the actual viewers and sci fi fans. Seriously, an average score of 36? It should be up there in the 90'ies. I think professional reviewers have almost outplayed themselves, they're worthless and pointless and quite frankly guys, just do us all a favour and start doing something else in your lives. Everytime you feel that itch to write a professional review, just stop. Go away, we hate you (sorry to be so offensive, but so many professional reviewers these days just suck big time).

User reviews are so much more accurate when it comes to the quality of a show. I can't believe that these reviewers are the same ones that gave Star Trek Discovery so high ratings; while I will say that I do enjoy Discovery somewhat, I must say I have been quite disappointed way too many times. Well, I'll do a Discovery review and continue with reviewing that there.

Final verdict: The Orville is an awesome show, and until now where I have watched 5 episodes, I have to say that it just gets better and better. First episode was pretty good and enjoyable but from there on each episode just got better and better. I really hope this trend continues. Guys, this is NOT a goofey comedy show, this IS actual sci-fi, but intelligently sprinkled here and there with the wits of Seth MacFarlane who also does an excellent job at acting too. Very very well done. I hope this show gets many many episodes and many many seasons!

Oh and btw just one last thing: if you are pirating this show and like it like I do, for the love of all that is amazing, buy it god dammit! Pay for it, purchase it! it's more than worth it!

Of course Seth McFarlane had to insert a more comedic element compared to the other Star Trek series, otherwise it would have been just a rip-off. But I feel that in this case it's never "too much", and it's actually very respectful of the material used for inspiration. In fact, the creator acknowledged from the start that this is an homage to Trek.

And speaking of respect, I feel this is way, WAY more respectful than the abomination that is Star Trek Discovery (which I will probably cover in another review).

Granted, there's nothing really "new" here. A lot of the plot points, stories and characters are very similar to what we've all already seen in previous Treks, but that is not the point. It's a great cocktail mixing what fans like me love about Star Trek, with some touches of comedic elements and new protagonists.

The music is also spectacular, with the main theme being much better than the one found in ST:D; it feels much more "Trek" like.

When all the world seems to be burying each other on social media, this show – in the true spirit of Star Trek – reminds us of our commonalities and the chance of a world of unity, while tackling current issues in the way only a proper episodic sci-fi can. There was a desperate need for something like this in the world, and The Orville delivered. The only small minus is due to it taking a couple of episodes in the beginning of the season before The Orville finally hit the right note balancing it's comedic aspects. It only kept bettering itself throughout the season, towards an even more Trek-like feel, and I have high expectations for the second one. Truly a gem in these times, and highly recommended for a modern day catharsis. Expand

Watching The Orville is like settling back into your favourite old comfy chair that's had a bunch of modern innovations strapped on. It absolutely recreates the feel of TNG, and so delivers a welcome nostalgia kick - but more than that, it capture the _soul_ of Star Trek.

Clearly written by fans of the show and Sci-Fi, it pokes fun at the genre tropes in an affectionate, laugh-with-you manner as well as dealing with more serious social commentary - and thankfully without the turgid drama that certain elements of society feel they need to hammer you on the head with.

And, most critically, the story and character have real heart. The importance of this appears to have been completely missed by the writers of ST:D, who have been out-Star Trekked by The Orville.

I’m really enjoying this show. It’s punchy, light hearted humour makes things fun and there’s some genuinely cool sci-fi moments. It’s not perfect, sure, but it has more than enough going for it to keep you watching. It does an excellent job of paying homage to shows like (most notably) Star Trek while at the same time obviously ripping it apart (in a fun way). The best new Star Trek show of 2017, now with added d*ck jokes.

No idea what the critics were watching, but it clearly wasn't The Orville.

This show doesn’t know what it’s trying to be. It’s all over the place. It tries to be a comedy, but also tries for dramatic situations and social commentary. Does not do any of those things well.

Could do without the political and social issues ‘cause the forced way they do it, it plays weak, stereotypical, and unfocused. A few episodes in we are given Rob Lowe in blue makeup to give the first officer a pass on the infidelity that was the trigger event in the breakup between her and the captain. She is now the victim? No one knew about this aspect of that particular species?

An obvious ripoff of Star Trek for certain. They’ve been careful to label fictional future technologies with different names, but they have warp drive, a robot crewman, and a holodeck (the weak literary device to let the writers stray into any setting). Interesting that they opted out of a matter transporter clone. Has most of the stereotypical characters as well. Hoped for better and if better doesn’t show itself, will be taking it off my DVR record list.

Find it interesting the reviews have been mostly all or nothing. Either you really like this show or you really hate it! I understand why people want to like it during a time when Star Trek Discovery is marginal and not worth subscribing to CBS All Access. I just cannot understand how a show that is so close to plagiarism and a weak copy job at that actually wins over such a large fan base. Guess that’s par for the YouTube generation.

    This show is amazingly good.

I expected a comedy, and was hoping it might be a bit like Galaxy Quest. It's not as outright comedic, the humor is more underhanded and the scripts are actually better than typical Trek or Star Wars. I am binge watching the series right now, and the topics are pretty heavy handed but handled lightly. It's hard to describe, but it's some of the best

Other than that, really fine acting, the graphics are top notch, and the scoring is really good - it's used sparingly and therefore is more impactful.

Highly recommended. It's so good that I expect Fox to cancel it any minute.

It's A great show, critics are crazy because is really good. If you were watching star trek discovery, sometimes Orville can be like a complement.
Don't see the critics just watch the series, the joke are a lot, but thee stories are good and they get better, just look in all the pages the critic´s score and the user´s and make your own judgment.

its funny, entertaining and diverse. Also unlike the new Star Trek discovery I actually like and enjoy watching the characters go through their respective arc's. This show is a love letter to Gene Roddenberry's initial idea of what star trek should of been. Also This show is more than a star Trek Spoof its really its own thing. Also the show expands on the star trek formula for example notits funny, entertaining and diverse. lowbrow, unfunny, cringefest. i could barely sit through the pilot, if this gets much better afterwards then sorry.
it should be always suspicious when either the critics or users hate something this much.

Seen the whole 1st Season now and I'm impressed. If you overlook the occasional humor it is the best Star Trek show since Picard showed us the Vision of a lighthearted optimistic future. Maybe the professional critics shouldn't have compared it to galaxy quest but to TNG instead.

I really wasn't sure I would, but I totally enjoyed this show. I've been a closet Trekkie since I was like 10 and loved it because it showed a future you could be optimistic about. I was really excited about Discovery, but for me, it just kinda just sucked (at least so far). The Orville is MY sort of Star Trek. With cheesy Dad jokes a massive bonus. Bring on season 2!

I am surprised the critic reviews are so low for this show. I think this show is great, it is a perfect balance of serious and humor when it comes to the sci-fi space exploration genre. I am also a big fan of Seth McFarlane's humor. Can't wait for the second season!

I understand the confusion expressed by critics about The Orville, in which the humor sometimes seems forced and disconnected from the drama. And wasn't this supposed to be a comedy, a parody? And wasn't this supposed to be a comedy, a parody? But no, the show is a straight-up homage to Star Trek, with a few jokes, not a rip-off of that seminal science fiction show, as some critics think. The second episode was a direct tribute to the original Star Trek pilot, "The Cage," from 1965, in which Captain Pike (the proto-Kirk) winds up in an alien menagerie. I initially cringed at the premise of The Orville's pilot — man is forced to captain starship with his ex-wife as first officer — but the show quickly moved beyond divorce jokes. The humor became less jarring and more subtle as the season evolved (and I suspect you either like Seth MacFarlane's humor or you don't, at all). What's more, the characters actually seem to like and respect each other (despite some terrible practical jokes), a rarity in contemporary TV drama. Even the stock villains of the series, the hyper-aggressive Krill, are shown to have more than one dimension. And in the finest Star Trek tradition, The Orville addresses topical issues by giving them a SciFi veneer (my favorite in that line, the episode where the Orville encounters a world much like ours ruled via something like Facebook). The Orville isn't dark (except for a few moments). It isn't edgy, nor is it campy a là "Galaxy Quest." Most important, The Orville isn't "Star Trek Discovery," which is what its fans may like most about it. And to the dismay of TV critics (and don't imagine Star Trek was universally acclaimed by critics in the 1960s), it's coming back for a second season. Enjoy. Expand

The show's smirky tone, embodied in MacFarlane's smug frat-boy demeanor as the captain, never quite gels with the universal humanism the episode is aiming for. [18 Sep - 1 Oct 2017, p.27]

Except for Norm Macdonald as the voice of an alien made of what looked like quivering gelatin, I didn’t find much that was amusing about The Orville’s space odyssey. ... From its opening scene with Victor Garber assigning Ed his ship to the final, unsuspenseful shootout with alien enemies, The Orville moved from one lull to another.
