    The Orville is a comedy version of Star Trek. It's very funny, but it doesn't only have jokes. It also deals with serious, real-world topics in a mature way.

If it means anything or could be seen as an endorsement, Robert Picardo from Star Trek Voyager has already filmed an episode and Marina Sirtis is to guest star in an episode directed by Star Trek: TNG’s Jonathan Frakes soon. This show is the closest you'll get to Gene Roddenberry's vision of theThis show, The Orville, is more Star Trek than the STD rubbish could or pretends to ever be.     I don’t get the critics scores. I mean the first 3 episodes, I was like “this is better than I thought it was going to be”, then that 4th episode, I was “wow, that was good”. That episode was a cross between Heinleins (orphan of the stars) and Asimovs (nightfall), but it was well done. Overall this is a good show for what it is meant to be.

    Forget all the official TV-critics. If you like Star Trek (and I mean the REAL stuff like The Next Generation) you will embrace it. The Orville is funny, dramatic, well written, has really good, likable characters and shows diversity not like other TV-Shows, who always try to shove it up your throat. The Orville is the better Star Trek nowadays and I´m sure Gene Roddenberry would be proud. Go on!

    I don't like Seth MacFarlane, I find his sense of humour crude, childish and unfunny. I know he can deliver good performance but as an "idea guy" I tend to avoid him. So to no surprise, I ignored "The Orville" when it was originally airing, after all, Seth MacFarlane has his hands all over that show and despite me loving the genre I couldn't force myself to watch this. So to no surprise, I ignored "The Orville" when it was originally airing, after all, Seth MacFarlane has his hands all over that show and despite me loving the genre I couldn't force myself to watch this. Instead, I decided to go with "Star Trek: Discovery" (check my review, I run away after 2,5 episodes). I was a fool.
    "The Orville" is a show that, yes, has the MacFarlane sense of humour here and there, even has some jokes so cringy I had to take pause, but it also has the drama and heart of "Star Trek". Somehow Seth MacFarlane captured the spirit of the trek and locked it in place for this show. The topics, themes, characters all are rich and respectful without pandering to anyone. Something that often goes out the window in comedy shows is lore, yet "Orville" keep its lore intact, they never break it and you can see that a great deal of planning went into creating this universe and its people. I remember the first season of "Deep Space 9" and "The Next Generation" as shows looking for their footing, this isn't the case with "Orville", this show knew from the start what it wanted to do and just did it.
    If you like "Star Trek", the real "Star Trek" or even sci-fi, in general, you owe it to yourself to watch this show.    … Expand

    Best sci-fi comedy of all time!! Masterful story writing, excellent characters, super-funny alien designs. I love the actors. Seth MacFarlane and the cast took this show to the Next Level of Entertainment!!!

    Yes! this is Star Trek, not a parody, but a well written, thoughtfull show, it has lots of problems, but given that it is a first season, and given that I have watched the 2nd season, I can tell you the show goes from strength to strength, a good watch for any sci-fi fan.

    Shocking to see how low the critics marked it. I can only blame it on the uneven tone of the first season with it's terrible comedy. The comedy is better in the second season, but overall the comedy in general is only 5% of a show that's fun, dramatic and Star Trek without being Star Trek.     Like the show. It struggles to figure out if its a sci-fi with comedy or a comedy that's sci-fi themed. But with the fun and moral tail it spins its like some of the best of the older Star Trek shows. The kind of show Star trek can't do anymore.

    I am writing this review after watching most of the second season, as well. This show has the heart and writing quality of earlier Star Trek works (pre-2009). It feels more like Star Trek than the actual Star Trek show we are getting at the moment from CBS (ST:D). The only negative aspect for me in the first season was that the humor was not to my taste, but this was improved in season 2,I am writing this review after watching most of the second season, as well.     Best Trekkie Sci-Fi show on TV in a very long time. I don't know what critics are smoking(or who's paying them) but this show is pretty amazing.

    This was another great episode from one of the most underrated shows on TV. I found this episode to be a fun insight into the private lives of the characters on the show and it was a nice break from all of the action. The show works because the writers know when to inject humor and when to pull back from the action and that balance is the reason why the show is slowly becoming popular.

    I dig this show. It was about time to get some positive look into the future, to balance all the grim that scifi presents as of late.

Despite being on a star ship the leadership is drawn into solving a moral problem, usually from another species and just like Gene Roddenberry's original creation (Roddenberry wrote police episodes before Star Trek).     tbh in the beginning i thought this was a meh show because the graphics are kinda 2000's but after watching it for a few episodes it's really grown on me and the story telling is actually really good in a light-hearted way.     This show continues to improve every episode. It started out slightly above average and after watching Season 2, Identity Parts 1 and 2, I'm amazed. This is an Emmy worthy performance. The space battle is one of the best ever for TV. Seth, please keep The Orville going for years to come!!!

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a show that has shown vast improvement in it's second season. It has somehow managed to explore extremely deep issues like identity and discrimination and become a fascinating study on humanity. Although the characters are not very well defined, the writing manages to make you care deeply about each character. They have managed to take great creative risks this season, such as allowing one main character to leave the series all-together and allowing another main character to become a villain in a wholly unexpected plot twist that puts the entire cast of characters in mortal danger. When it debuted people unfairly assumed it was going to be a slapstick comedy in the style of "Family Guy" but this series is so much more and tackles deep issues with style.… Expand

    To start off I'm a huge Star Trek fan having grown up on TNG, Voyager, and Enterprise with the last one having a special place in my heart since I was born in 1998. When I first heard about a Star Trek TV show coming out I was really excited about the prospect of revisiting The Federation. Unfortunately, when Star Trek Discovery finally came out I didn't feel the rush of nostalgia I was expecting and hoping for. Instead, I felt nothing. I thought that maybe I just wasn't interested in Trek anymore, not to mention Discovery isn't a very good show. Then I heard about The Orville. I was sceptical at first and didn't give it a shot for a year since I just assumed that it cannot be the good old star trek without its copyright, I was so wrong. From the very first minutes, I felt the same joy I had years ago and I instantly knew that THIS IS STAR TREK! Except for a few awkward jokes here and there, this is like watching TNG or Enterprise for the first time. If you are a Trek fan and you wish a modern version of your nostalgia, this is it. The humour is spot on and the stories so far have been hugely original. I haven't seen anything like it before and am looking forward to future seasons.     Ever since Data saved Picard in the final Star Trek movie I have been hoping for Star Trek to come back.

    The Orville has given me back my Star Trek. Sure, it may be under a different name, but this show is more faithful to the spirit of Star Trek than any of the alleged Star Trek stuff that has been made lately.     As for the critics, they are on some kind of mission with some weird agenda. I am not sure who is angry at who or why this time, but the critic reviews are obviously part of some hit piece project. Someone some place has an interest in seeing this show fail for some reason.    … Expand

    One big hole in my nerddom has been star trek: I've never consumed book, tv show or movie of this universe. Waiting for the continuation of several excellent sci-fi series (The Expanse, Westworld...), I came across the Orville (see post above). It started out with a very scatological/childish humor but became better and better such that it is one of my favourite shows in today's tv.

MacFarlane could have made this a complete vanity project but has wisely shared the interesting story lines among this talented ensemble cast. I had no expectations of what this show was going to be, I was simply recommended to watch The Orville from a friend and I've enjoyed it as a whole from the first episode. Each episode has a story of it's own while remaining intact with series continuity. I binged the first season and loved it, and the second seasonNot a fan of Family Guy or American Dad. Haven't seen any Star Trek shows. I had no expectations of what this show was going to be, I was simply recommended to watch The Orville from a friend and I've enjoyed it as a whole from the first episode.     Better Trek than STD.... interesting characters, not every problem is solved with violence, told some interesting tales in the vein of TOS and TNG. In my mind I imagined the star trek skin over seth mcfarlanes copy cat and it just works. The only thing that falls flat on occasion is the jokes, but the story and the characters take me past that.

    Hugely compelling and totally anachronistic, The Orville defies the mundane expectation of critics. Where most modern television feels the need to spoonfeed the audience, this show treats viewers like grown-up intelligent people. Routinely grappling with philosophical themes that most shows would run screaming from, without ever thinking highly of itself. The Orville is really refreshing TV.

    Okay, on to my actual review: I'll start by saying you shouldn't judge this show on the pilot, which simply hasn't figured out how to meld sci-fi action/drama with humor and is filled with supremely awkward, sophomoric gags. However, as the first season progresses, we get something that is actually *better* in some respects than the various Star Trek series: a show in which the humor is just one aspect of showing that these characters (aliens included) have very 'human' weaknesses. They get jealous; they doubt themselves; they have bodily functions(!)
    If you've seen an episode or two and are thinking of quitting, PLEASE give it until episode 3 "About a Girl," which in my opinion stands right up there with some of the best all-time Star Trek episodes in terms of its painful exploration of a subject that parallels issues on modern day Earth. [The first comparable Star Trek episode that came to mind was Voyager's "Tuvix."] In a similar vein, episode 7, "Majority Rule," is something every parent should show to their social media obsessed teenagers.
    If you're more interested in seeing your heroes put through the emotional wringer, check out episode 10 "Firestorm." And if you're looking for more of an exploration of hard sci-fi, look no further than episode 11, which involves the discovery of a two-dimensional civilization and a reference to the classic novella "Flatland."
    I read a review somewhere that wrote "This is the Star Trek series you didn't know you wanted." And I really think that's true. All I can say is: thank you, Seth McFarlane.    … Expand

    Amazing Show! Was so disappointed by STD which is violent, cruel dishonest - and SO HAPPY when the REAL StarTrek came along in the form of THE ORVILLE. This follows the same trail from TNG+Voyager+DS9 that we all remember where each episode have a moral story, a teaching story, a story that makes us think, and where it pushes the understanding of humanity a bit further.

    I spent the first 2 episodes waiting for the jokes which is probably why the critics score is so low, The Orville is not a pastiche of Star Trek but a very sweet homage which is actually a lot more enjoyable than almost every Star Trek product in the last 20 years, everyone involved seems to be enjoying themselves and it deserves the cult status it has already garnered

    I'll keep this short and sweet - First episode of of season 2 was funny as; i found myself rolling on the floor laughing, time and again. This is the best Star Trek series going bar none. Do yourself a huge favour and watch The Orville. Feel good TV at its very best.

But it really is a fantastic sci-fi show that has much better stories than I thought it would.     Got to admit I'm not a big fan Todd. Family Guy is ok but I'm more of a South Park fan. That being said I actually enjoyed this show. I've only seen eps 1 and 2 of season 2 but I liked what I saw. Curious to watch season 1 now and that's what a good show should do

    Despite the premise that the Orville was advertised as a comedy show or a parody on old sci-fi, to me it felt like the better and more intelligent modern star trek series. Some episodes show not just good but brilliant story writing. Something I missed so much on the otherwise well crafted DIS. Good stories and world-building is key to a good Science-fiction and Seth MacFarlane understands that.

    Seriously though, awesome show for any fan of Star Trek TOS, TNG and anything other than JJ crap and Discovery. While not Star Trek (sadly) it's as close as you can get, even if it's a parody. Even Trekkies who hate Seth like this series.

    The one major thing I would have to criticize is that the humor tends to be way to obvious and rather crude, similar to what you would expect from an american sitcom.
    You might think it is a weird criticism that I'd like a Seth MacFarlane parody to take itself more seriously, but considering that the more dramatic moments are done so well by comparison I think it is justified. On that note there isn't as much of this kind of humor in there as you'd expect, which is why it luckily feels more often like Star Trek than Family Guy.
    However there are actually some genuinely funny moments hidden in there. Ironically those are when the show doesn't try to be overly funny but rather naturally incorporates more subtle believable humor. It's the kind of humor similar to what you might actually see on TNG, DS9 or Voyager.

    In conclusion, seldom have I ever been more positively surprised by a show, especially considering most professional reviews. It manages to capture the feeling of Star Trek much better than Discovery or the Abrams movies could ever hope to and it makes me feel like this is the canonical entry while those are the parody.    … Expand

    Incredibly and unexpectedly "The Orville" owns the real spirit of "Star Trek". The one of Gene Roddenberry i mean. The focus is the exploration of human soul. The space, the ship, the aliens, are just a pretense to speak about serious themes without been heavy. I really love this show.

Everytime you feel that itch to write a professional review, just stop. Go away, we hate you (sorry to be so offensive, but so many professional reviewers these days just suck big time).

    User reviews are so much more accurate when it comes to the quality of a show. I can't believe that these reviewers are the same ones that gave Star Trek Discovery so high ratings; while I will say that I do enjoy Discovery somewhat, I must say I have been quite disappointed way too many times. Well, I'll do a Discovery review and continue with reviewing that there.

    Final verdict: The Orville is an awesome show, and until now where I have watched 5 episodes, I have to say that it just gets better and better. First episode was pretty good and enjoyable but from there on each episode just got better and better. I really hope this trend continues. Guys, this is NOT a goofey comedy show, this IS actual sci-fi, but intelligently sprinkled here and there with the wits of Seth MacFarlane who also does an excellent job at acting too. Very very well done. I hope this show gets many many episodes and many many seasons!

    Oh and btw just one last thing: if you are pirating this show and like it like I do, for the love of all that is amazing, buy it god dammit! Pay for it, purchase it! it's more than worth it!    … Expand

    I'm a huge Star Trek fan, and this show hits all the right chords to be exactly what fans like me want: action, drama and comedy all mesh up really well in creating a very enjoyable show.
    Of course Seth McFarlane had to insert a more comedic element compared to the other Star Trek series, otherwise it would have been just a rip-off. But I feel that in this case it's never "too much", and it's actually very respectful of the material used for inspiration. In fact, the creator acknowledged from the start that this is an homage to Trek.

    And speaking of respect, I feel this is way, WAY more respectful than the abomination that is Star Trek Discovery (which I will probably cover in another review).

    Granted, there's nothing really "new" here. A lot of the plot points, stories and characters are very similar to what we've all already seen in previous Treks, but that is not the point. It's a great cocktail mixing what fans like me love about Star Trek, with some touches of comedic elements and new protagonists.

    The music is also spectacular, with the main theme being much better than the one found in ST:D; it feels much more "Trek" like.

    Seen the whole 1st Season now and I'm impressed. If you overlook the occasional humor it is the best Star Trek show since Picard showed us the Vision of a lighthearted optimistic future. Maybe the professional critics shouldn't have compared it to galaxy quest but to TNG instead.

    I really wasn't sure I would, but I totally enjoyed this show. I've been a closet Trekkie since I was like 10 and loved it because it showed a future you could be optimistic about. I was really excited about Discovery, but for me, it just kinda just sucked (at least so far). The Orville is MY sort of Star Trek. With cheesy Dad jokes a massive bonus. Bring on season 2!

    I am surprised the critic reviews are so low for this show. I think this show is great, it is a perfect balance of serious and humor when it comes to the sci-fi space exploration genre. I am also a big fan of Seth McFarlane's humor. Can't wait for the second season!

    See for yourself. I love the cast of characters. When they all get together and messing around with one another is brings such a smile to my face. This is one of the best shows on television right now!!! I can’t get enough of this show! Can’t wait till next season keep up the great work, everyone at the orville!!

The second episode was a direct tribute to the original Star Trek pilot, "The Cage," from 1965, in which Captain Pike (the proto-Kirk) winds up in an alien menagerie. I initially cringed at the premise of The Orville's pilot — man is forced to captain starship with his ex-wife as first officer — but the show quickly moved beyond divorce jokes. The humor became less jarring and more subtle as the season evolved (and I suspect you either like Seth MacFarlane's humor or you don't, at all). What's more, the characters actually seem to like and respect each other (despite some terrible practical jokes), a rarity in contemporary TV drama. Even the stock villains of the series, the hyper-aggressive Krill, are shown to have more than one dimension. And in the finest Star Trek tradition, The Orville addresses topical issues by giving them a SciFi veneer (my favorite in that line, the episode where the Orville encounters a world much like ours ruled via something like Facebook). The Orville isn't dark (except for a few moments). It isn't edgy, nor is it campy a là "Galaxy Quest." Most important, The Orville isn't "Star Trek Discovery," which is what its fans may like most about it. And to the dismay of TV critics (and don't imagine Star Trek was universally acclaimed by critics in the 1960s), it's coming back for a second season. Enjoy.… Expand

    Yet again, proof that critics and fans are different pages. This show is everything I have been wanting and didn't know. Reminiscent of Star Trek (even more than Star Trek Discovery). It is funny at all the right moments and serious at all the right moments. Every episode was better than the previous. I hope this show has many more seasons to come.

    If you're looking for the next generation of Star Trek - that's actually palatable - this is it. Modern, comedic, intriguing with good writing.

    There are no political undertones or motives, just good new fashioned sci-fi. I hope there's many seasons to come.

    I really enjoy this show, and I think the 'official' critics are missing the point. Hey, I hate Family Guy too, but I can see that this is something very different. As a majorStar Trek lover, I find The Orville to mostly be a comedy tribute to Captain Kirk. That's a good thing.

    Way better than discovery. It's an odd but welcomed homage to star trek. It is mixed with classic star trek dilemma scenarios with Seth macfarlands crass humour. It's a fresh show, and itches the scratch for new star trek

    I love this show! Parody interwoven with true comedy. The critics are idiots if they can't see the genius of this show. Seth Macfarlane knows whats up.

    This show is the spiritual successor to Star Trek: The Next Generation. It continues to get better and better, and shows touch of social matters in the adventure of the week. There is minor parts of humour mixed in, but sci-fi is the main premise of the show, not humour. Any critic who disliked the show most likely doesn't enjoy Star Trek shows in general.

    While not every joke works, it is overall funny, entertaining, and embodies the spirit of Star Trek much better than Star Trek Discovery. The feel is very reminiscent of TNG.

    It is no Discovery that this show is more Star Trek than Discovery. Gene 'The Orville" Roddenberry would be proud to see his vision being continued despite it being a Star Trek clone.

    First episode was disappointing but the show is getting better and better and after episode 7 I can say WOoooW Orville is a great star trek like show.

    As a Star Trek devotee, from way back with the original series (born in early 60's) and having watched all the series and movies, I really love this show. It's funny and can be serious as well. Seth McFarland makes a great captain,

    I introduced the kid to Star Trek over the summer, so watching The Orville seemed a good idea. We are both really enjoying it. If we have an episode of Discovery and Orville on the PVR, we'll usually watch The Orville first.

    It’s got top-notch special effects and terrific makeup (for its space-alien characters). But it just doesn’t quite gel. At least not yet, anyway.

    Except for Norm Macdonald as the voice of an alien made of what looked like quivering gelatin, I didn’t find much that was amusing about The Orville’s space odyssey. ... From its opening scene with Victor Garber assigning Ed his ship to the final, unsuspenseful shootout with alien enemies, The Orville moved from one lull to another.
