I just watched the first episode with a few friends and at around the 30 minute mark we were openly mocking the show's terrible acting and writing. If Netflix keeps putting out mediocre shows like this one the "Netflix Original" brand will mean nothing.

As some have noted, this series begins promisingly, but around the halfway mark the wheels start to come off. I wish they had stuck with an examination of the psychological ramifications of long term captivity. Or the nature of consciousness. Or an intelligent discussion of the possibility of life after death. Or some other equally worthy topic. Instead, The OA devolves into a confusing, pretentious and increasingly improbable mess. Watch Stranger Things instead. It's just as goofy, but doesn't make the mistake of taking itself quite so seriously. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 4 episodes of The OA on Netflix is all I can take, I just don't care enough to sit through something so relentlessly humourless. Everyone's dour, like they've been sentenced to a remote part of Scotland to live on stale bread and vinegar, and the only news of the outside world they'll ever hear is of minor celebrity deaths.

The main characters have all died and come back from near death experiences, they meet up to listen to one of them - the OA - tell the story of how she was kidnapped and escaped. Essentially it's an Emos Anonymous pity party for one of their members who suffered the great misfortune of recovering her sight.

There's a 'mystery' element to it - who's kidnapped her and why - which I expect is supposed to hold our interest except it doesn't because it's more soul destroying watching exposition being padded to this extent than actually being held captive.

Why is it that TV shows which strive to be 'deep' have to be so damned joyless and filled with such miserable one-dimensional navel-gazing sad-sack characters.

    Ugh.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm still not sure what this show was supposed to be. There's the literal possibility that OA is an angel, that something truly supernatural is happening. There's a schizophrenic interpretation. A hostage scenario interpretation. Enough possibilities to keep me watching. But the end left me scratching my head as to what the makers had in mind, in no small part due to the silly dance that either had no affect or an indirect one at best. I laughed out loud but wasn't sure I was supposed to. There's no insight into what really happened to OA beyond the cheap Deus Ex box of books that borrows somewhat from The Usual Suspects' twist. But is it a twist? If I figure it out I'll up the rating. Expand

The OA is slow to start but eventually reaches its stride. By the 2nd last episode you're hooked and it feels like it's leading to massive climax. Then the last episode happens and it falls flat on its face. A vague and somewhat ridiculous ending ruined an otherwise entertaining series.

The network governs itself, without any FCC oversight, it also isn't reliant on immediate ratings, and can give unique shows the time to evolve, grow, and gain a following. This is especially important for a show like The OA, which is perhaps the most unique show I've ever seen.

After missing for eight years, Prairie Johnson (Brit Martling) is finally found, only something is dramatically different. The once blind girl can now see, but that's not all, she has weird scars on her back, and seems completely out of touch with reality. Her family try to help her cope and re-integrate, but with only limited success, as Prairie seems to be obsessed with a mission that she must complete. Before she's able to do this, Prairie must recruit the help of five people and tell them her story, where she's been, how she got there, and what happened to her. As we get to know Prairie and discover why she's so weird, we also get to know the five people who will supposedly help her on her journey. All of them are unique in their own way and all of them have their own stories, which while not the main focus of the show, offer a nice interlude from the Prairie Johnson saga.

The OA is a strange show which features multiple dimensions, near death experiences and experimentation, even interpretive dance. If you are not a fan of Science Fiction or desire your Sci-fi with a lot of action and strange beings, you probably aren't going to like this show too much. I found the OA to be very dark, sometimes intolerably slow, and it very frequently repeats itself. That being said it is also a incredible mystery that asks a lot of questions that some people may find hard to deal with. I found the show somewhat difficult to get into but once I did, it became very addicting. I needed to know the whole story and see what happened once the story ended.

The show has been renewed for season two, but much is the case with many Netflix shows, that was a year an half ago. I really don't understand why it takes them so long to get addition seasons of their shows produced. It is very anti-climatic when you think about it, because people who got into it when it first debuted have probably forgotten all about it by now. Not to mention, how do you just start watching a show again that you haven't seen in two years? Many people are going to forget everything except the major plot lines and not wanting to re-watch the first season, aren't going to bother with season 2. With that in mind, a second season is supposedly on it's way, and hopefully it answers the biggest question of them all.

The OA is what happened when the director and writer think their show is much edgier and deeper than it actually is. It started strong with its intrigue and mystery, but ended up with a bitter taste due to a disjointed and non-sensical ending on season 1. It's borderline offensive to anyone with a brain and frankly a waste of time.

Starts with great promise, a story told through blurred lines of reality, the nature of existence and its inherit relationship to trauma, leaving the viewer asking if the central character is what she says she is or is mentally ill. However after 4 exasperatingly slow episodes it turns into some nonsense claptrap that tells us the world's ills can be cured by interpretive dance. However, I viewed this with the most objectivity I could; and objectively, this series was a load of pretentious, pseudo-intellectual, drivel about spirituality and the afterlife (among other ideas). It's comfort food for the New Age inclined individuals who are not concerned with plot holes and/or character development. From the first episode you felt the writers calling you out for thinking about quitting it. I can tell you that I couldn't stop watching it, partially due to the intrigue of the subject and partially to see the "brilliance" I was told about this show. A redeeming quality this had was the, genuinely laugh out loud, unintentional comedy I found in the dialogue, plot holes, and acting/movements (except for the parents, who were objectively great). I don't mind weird topics or different execution, but my dislike of the series is not based on my subjective opinion about the topic, but on traits it objectively was lacking (Story/Characters/Sense). Watching final episode: "Damn... six, seven hours to get to this?? I should have suspected when the yoga moves became important to the story..."
Conclusion: The whole thing is quite clever and intriguing for the most part. I was prepared for twists in an X-Files kind of way... There is a strong twist in the end, but it kind of pushes too far from the atmosphere built with the first episodes for my taste, like when Night Shyamalan does not hit the target. I think some people will like it, but the end made me feel like I lost seven hours with this show. You might feel different, but know that there is this risk and that I told you so.
Still, I can't give anything below 7 for this show because it kicks off so well and maintains it so well for the first half!

The result is extraordinary and truly unique. Nothing is like the OA as far as I know. It is both mystical and dramatic, metaphysical and emotional and especially beautiful in every way. The way it depicts human beings, our world and its contradictions, the suffering we all share, the love we all aspire to.

Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij have crafted an original show, deeply moving and truly immersive in a way that is both the result of the very well-crafted series but also the faith they have in the audience, in the one who watches and chooses to believe.

Lots of loose ends, unanswered questions, corny acting...It was fun and they made a grand effort, but you'll be annoyed at yourself when you reach the end. It wasn't horrible, just lazily written. Like they just took a first draft and decided that was good enough...
    Unanswered stuff:
    1) why did they have to leave their doors open again?
    2) how did she manage to carve dance moves into her BACK? Knife? Glass? Rock? She did it over her shoulder and upside down huh? Yeah?
    3) she got her sight back how? From a bang on the head?
    4) the books they found at the end....So...What? She made the whole story up? Was she kidnapped or not?
    5) she's wearing an electronic bracelet on her ankle at the end. Why? Is she a criminal or someone who was recently a kidnapping victim?
    6) in the beginning she sort of displays superpowery stuff (surviving the bridge jump, scaring the attack dog) but that angle is abandoned...
    7) why did she jump off the goddamn bridge at all? What exactly was the point of that other than to have some bozo film it and put it on YouTube so she can be found? She couldn't have asked someone to call the police for her?

And on and on. And on.

What's kind of interesting is it takes place in a high school town with high school kids at the forefront.

If this had been submitted as a creative paper, it would be covered with a teacher's red ink with questions all over it.
    "Who is this person?"
"How did he hear about the woman in Cuba? Is there an NDE chatroom?"
"From hearing Prairie play the violin he intuited she had a near death experience, really?"
"So wait, he drowns them until their hearts stop? How do they come back to life? CPR?"
"How come the guy prisoners are all clean-shaven? Does he shave them?"

It's like a decent first draft that had potential but they were too lazy or rushed or delusional, and so the finished product is pretty stupid. Did Homer and the others exist? Maybe season two will be better. Hopefully with none of that gag-inducing interpretive dance actor workshop exercise garbage in it...

The series paints itself into a corner and cannot resolve what it sets the audience up for, organically and to any reasonable degree of satisfaction, perhaps due to a poorly thought-out strategy, but more probably, a lack of enough creative intelligence to take its themes and the audience, to a brilliant, revelatory conclusion…a direction that the first 7 episodes suggests it is going in.
We’ve all been sucked into countless films and stories where we go on a fantastic reality ride, only to find out that it was someone’s dream, which then becomes both the explanation and the resolution of the story, often times followed by a finale teaser which suggests that, well, maybe it was real, after all. The OA does exactly this but it leaves us feeling utterly manipulated and betrayed….angry, actually, that we have invested so much into the hope of being taken somewhere spiritually or metaphysically unique.
The film has many great moments, but it also relies upon an extremely dark, perverse tool to keep us engaged…that of the worst kind of human abuse and horror. I’ve seen many films that were nearly impossible to watch due to the abject discomfort caused by the reality of what was happening to living human beings and The OA ranks right up there with the worst of them. The kind of staggeringly cruel, brutal and multifaceted torture that was being inflicted by the most horrible omnipotent monster was never more impacting than in this series….and it was the subtlety and the feigning of affection by the perpetrator that made the abuse so horrific.
The OA, or should I say, Britt Marling and Zal Batmanglij decide to use this most compelling but disgusting tool of manipulation available to keep our attention, (which brings up questions about their unresolved inner monsters for me). Naturally, we join the deceived and doomed captives in their cells and hope against all hope that they will be liberated...somehow.
I was initially very excited about Brit Marling when she came onto the film scene. I was thoroughly impressed with everything about “Another Earth” and couldn’t wait to see what she did next. But since then, I have watched her become a caricature of that brilliance…a weirdly attractive woman with an omnipresent, nagging urgency who never stops forcing the “I’ve got something really fascinating to share with you and you MUST listen to me, because I’m NOT going to get out of your face until you do” energy along with the “oh, I will SHOCK you with whatever I have to, to keep you focused on me” strategy. Her acting is a study in exaggeration, but she has to exaggerate, because the substance and the dynamics are simply not there. In The OA, she takes this to the point of becoming repulsive and grotesque.
For all of the above, I cast my ballot for Brit Marling’s early retirement, and if I could make it retroactive to the film “Another Earth”, I would. This series left the worst taste I have had in my mouth for years. It is an exercise in heavily borrowed metaphysical themes in the hands of weak, unimaginative direction.

But if you keep an open mind and let Brit take you on a special journey then you'll come to appreciate the story. Having said that, the primal, interpretive dance they term "Movements" are just hard to watch and I personally don't think they're appropriate for the storyline. IOW, the dance moves' violent and primal nature don't jibe with the beneficial effects they impart. That much is really stupid and off kilter. Movements based on Tai Chi would've been more appropriate. However, the pace and reveals are very well timed, nicely done. Not that it matters because it is what it is, but the final scene of the finale was not satisfying, it should've left viewers with more than the ambiguity it offered. Explosive outburst every other second as a substitute for real story telling, or to try to distract you from shallow unrealistic, paper cache characters.
Earnestness used in the same way, with similar results. As if androids wrote this. Would make Hamlet feel self conscious and realize he should stop making soliloquies and start writing haikus. Has an element of feeling like fan fiction, like fifty shades of grey derived from Twilight. But written by excited and verbally expressive Vegans who liked 80's movies and once took a class in college, and remembered Schrodinger's Cat and wanted to combine it with Breakfast Club and Bowling for Columbine. Then again, I saw the whole thing, and it's not bad for at least background, and gets points for quirkiness and unique if too fantastic a story. Makes Harry Potter or Lost seem comparatively plausible. Might get better. Sometimes interesting melange of ideas, but executed by computer algorithms or put through a randomizer. Not ashamed to be weird. Blissfully tone deaf. Which is good and bad. At it's best like a Kanye West B side. Every so often it works pretty well, intriguing but also not fully actualized. Makes me miss the comforting complexity and tangiblness of Voldemort. As if I cold touch his face where his nose should be. But come on are we this starved for shows? Uh actually yeah. Ok then. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I binge-watched the show in three nights and love it. To the critics who dislike the show, here is my take:

    1. Complaint: The ending is too ambiguous and doesn't give a clear answer.
It's likely the show is planned as multiple seasons, so there is no compelling reason the creators need to tidy up all loose ends. There is nothing wrong with the cliff-hanging finale that left viewers scratching their heads with the burning question "Is the OA's story for real?", it will be answered in season two.
In the unlikely event that the OA is not renewed for another season, it still looks good to me as a standalone 8-episode show. Not every goddamned TV show has to follow the conventional narrative with a beginning and an end. Why not let the answer linger in the air for the viewers to decide whether the OA is for real or fiction, through their own interpretations? For me, either answer is satisfactory.

    2. Complaint: The school shooting finale is disrespectful and cheap.
All kind of shocking life events are depicted on TV: serial murders, sexual assault, war, disasters... What's wrong with a school shooting, especially considering it happens so shockingly frequently in real life America! For a show involving a group of high school students it is a natural setting for the central theme of the show that faith, unity and sacrifice will defeat evil.

    3. Complaint: the movements (dance) are ridiculous.
The movements are beautiful to me. It serves perfectly as the channel for otherworldly spirits. Check out youtube clips of New Zealand Rugby team's similar Haka movements, always a crowd favorite. The climatic dance scene is beautifully shot, scored and performed. It is transcending. I guess you either like or hate it, a bit like American Football (I am a soccer fan).

    4. Complaints: the supernatural stuffs are cheap new age stuff.
I don't know how to answer this. Is Jesus Christ's virgin birth cheap new age stuff too?

    5. Complaints: too many plot holes.
No show is perfect. Some plot questions will be answered next season. Those critics will have credibility if they can explain to me why the highly trained storm-troopers in the Star Wars never seemed able to shoot straight at the good guys.

It is rare that I run into a show that feels so much like magic. While it took some effort to get through the first part of Episode 1 the payoff was well worth it. Please give this magical and super-interesting ride a try.

I've read a number of negative reviews and I feel as though I watched a completely different series from the one they describe. If New Age/fantasy isn;t your thing, don't watch this. If you like the idea of a character who might be an angel, might be an interstellar traveler or could just be mentally ill, give it a go. High recommendation! Expand

The show is very intriguing and exciting. At times the show seems needlessly slow but I feel it is all worth it in the end. Definitely setting up some exciting things for season 2.

The OA season 1 was nothing short of incredibly captivating and mind-boggling. The dramatic narrative of the main characters mixed with the unexpected sci-fi elements work together in harmony. A beautiful story full of growth, suspense, drama, and more. I couldn't recommend this show more. I can't wait for season 2!

Totally original work. Masterful story telling. Really, an unexpected stunner. For some reason, women seem to prefer it more than men. It is the brainchild of a woman, and gives us a wholly new look at a protagonist. Highly recommended.

Enjoyed the subject matter, did not enjoy delivery and what should have been quite complex was dumbed down and cheap at times..movements in the four dimensional plane as a vehichle to another? Movement? Come on. Hoping this is a growing pain and the next project will nail it because its close. Expand

Starts off as a solid 9.5, then degenerates into a 4, sadly. Overall, it's watchable, I guess, but it would have been so much better if it had a rough start and ended on a high note instead.

"Pretentious" is the best word for it, I think.

Good atmosphere and intriguing story kept me awake whole night just to be disappointed with an ending which felt kind of flat, illogical and rushed. Still, it made me interested enough that I will be back if there is a second season.

It took people that I feel like I could have known in my high school life - some severely troubled - and made them real to the audience. No one was overly beautiful, but everyone had substance. Great acting, great music, and entirely relatable. Life is full of hopeless moments. This series shows that, but it also shows how we are ravenous for hope. What a **** ride! It's well paced mystery that unfurls unpredictably and satisfying everything it sets up. Brit is a force to be reckoned with. The story does take many liberties with coincidence that can make you cringe but nonetheless it's very sure of itself and what it wants.

An episode or two in and sheer nonsensical lunacy of the writing becomes apparent. This series starts with intrigue but then shortly thereafter, the brakes come off and it begins to go downhill... slowly at first and then whoosh! The earth drops out and we're off the cliff and hurtling into the abyss. Stereotypical, boring, slow and getting more and more moronic by the episode. AVOID!!!
