While the presentation can get a little stilted, Making is a relatively clear-eyed look at a still-gripping mutation of the American dream. [19 Jun 2015, p.56]
-
This so far is an overall sturdy production that re-details the lives and deaths of high-powered hoods.
-
These too-timid re-enactments, punctuated with the occasional burst of VFX gunfire, are interspersed with some informative commentary by real experts like veteran mob reporter Selwyn Raab and dramatically less informative observations by actors like Vincent Pastore, who of course played a mobster on TV.
-
Even at its most interesting, The Making of the Mob has the flat taste of warmed-up leftovers. That’s because this story has already been told, and much better, during the five-year run of HBO’s Mob creation drama Boardwalk Empire.
-
Because of the episodic nature of the reenactments, and abetted by merely competent acting and bland writing, they fail to gain momentum. This lack of urgency in the production is ironically heightened by a heavy-handed percussive score that never lets up.
-
The dialogue is generally muted underneath the narration and a positively abusive musical score, which never approximates anything less than a swelling crescendo.
