Rich Graff's portrayal of Lucky Luciano is fantastic. He never once stumbles into the pitfall of "trying" to be the boss. The cinemtography is exquisite and the costume design is fantastic.

I got a chuckle when I read one of the Critical Reviews stated that the story told in TMOFM:NY was already told in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. While I love BE, it is a complete work of fiction that is loosely based in fact, not a historical account. Comparing the two shows, one pure entertainment and on based in fact, is not fair nor does it make sense to compare the two. So…. the new offering from AMC presents much to anyone interested in the origins of the American mob. While the production value, acting and dialogue are not as high as many cable shows these days, the show is intriguing and worth watching if the subject is of interest. I found myself learning new details, such as Mussolini’s impact on the mob in America (he jailed them in Sicily and Italy, forcing many of them to relocate…. to America). The show accurately depicts the violence and amorality of the mob and never tries to glorify organized crime. The Making of the Mob: New York is a very good show in my opinion; one that is entertaining and edifying if you want to learn more about the mafia, how it has shaped America and how it came into existence. This serial is a disaster. What idiot directed it? The music is beyond annoying and hardly any commentary can be heard over the loud and unnecessary background music. Lesser film-makers try to mask their ineptitude with music.

This show will be the sweet-tooth for Soprano fans reunion. It may not be as stellar as HBO Boardwalk or as glamorous as other mob hits, but it gets the job done as a docudrama. They give you blow by blow details of how the syndicate became organized, with how all of the players came up to what is called organized crime. Very addictive and leaves you wanting more!

Because of the episodic nature of the reenactments, and abetted by merely competent acting and bland writing, they fail to gain momentum. This lack of urgency in the production is ironically heightened by a heavy-handed percussive score that never lets up.

While the presentation can get a little stilted, Making is a relatively clear-eyed look at a still-gripping mutation of the American dream. [19 Jun 2015, p.56]

These too-timid re-enactments, punctuated with the occasional burst of VFX gunfire, are interspersed with some informative commentary by real experts like veteran mob reporter Selwyn Raab and dramatically less informative observations by actors like Vincent Pastore, who of course played a mobster on TV.
