To keep it spoiler free..well.. nobody is ever likely to read this, so i'll just sum it up by the show being an absolute abomination, there is nothing Tolkien'esque about this.. nothing.. I'll give it an extra point for its effects, which are (mostly) very good, but everything else about the show.. the cast, the story, the dialogue (massive cringe) is catastrophically bad...

The first couple episodes are laying the ground work for what is certainly going to be an epic adventure that captures the spirit of Tolkien. I enjoyed this rendition of Galadriel. She may seem angry and snappy at times but there are good reasons for her behavior. Every actor did an excellent job here. This is well worth watching and I can't wait to see the rest of the season. Rings of power has amazing landscape scenes, and the elven cities look fairly good as well.

Unfortunately, this pales in comparison with it's problems. Let's start with the main problems. The dialogue is about as bad as it can get. This is very noticeable in parts where the writers try to be deep and pseudo-philosophical. The characters act like petulant (and dumb) children, especially Galadriel and Durin. The lore is also clearly ignored, I don't want to include spoilers, but there's a lot of things that are not just minor deviations or additions to Tolkiens work, but major and problematic contradictions to the events of the second age.
The fight scenes are marvel superhero level of unbelievable.
Remember seeing Legolas riding that shield down the stairs at helmsdeep and thinking "that's a bit ridiculous". This is that times ten.
The Harfoot scenes are entirely unnecessary and boring.

While I think the show mostly looks as good as you expect from a high budget show, there are some places where the props and cgi looks very fake. This is mostly the case with the very cheap and plastic looking elven plate armor, as well some clearly styrofoam or plastic parts in khazad-dûm. In general, the swords, armor, clothes, etc, also look a lot less believable. It's all a bit generic fantasy looking. Visually It's all more on the level of the Hobbit movies then LOTR.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The scenery is amazing, with epic panoramic views and landscapes. Which is great....if I were at the Louvre. Pretty pictures, however, do not make a great tv show. Corny lines that try to be 'epic' but are just straight up foolish when you think about them; repeating story points or character behaviour patterns right after you literally showed them is poor writing skills; and making your main character utterly unlikeable in the first 2 episodes is a cardinal sin. Some acting is good, some is wooden as heck, so that is a wash. However, the biggest sin of the show is making your main character suicidal. Jumping out of a boat to swim across the sea is quite literally suicidal. This is not Marvel, we do not have super heroes in Middle Earth. Tolkien's statement that elves are immortal does not mean they can't be killed. They can be stabbed, they can be poisoned, they can drown, they can be run over by a cart and bleed out. So jumping into the ocean with no actual hope of survival is indeed suicidal, regardless if it was a 'spur of the moment' decision or not. Fans of Tolkien know Galadriel lives, characters who can break the 4th wall know they will live (but this isn't Deadpool, She-hulk, or Gwenpool); Galadriel the character does not know she lives. So then the writer has to use one of the weakest of writing forms, the '1 in a Million coincidence' of finding a raft in the middle of 100's of miles to save her. The actor herself should have refused to act out this part, it is completely insulting to the character she is playing. Expand

We had spent weeks scaling icy mountains and the rest of my team had frostbite even though elves barely feel the cold and can walk on snow. When we arrived at the top they wanted to immediately climb back down again. Our elf eyes saw nothing until a moment later we saw a huge palace that was clearly visible.

On making our way inside we found a red symbol, resembling the sign of the Crimson King from Stephen King's Dark Tower series, haha yes Frodo, I stopped reading after book 4 too. An Ice Troll attacked without warning and threw my elite elf team against the walls like dolls while I watched expressionlessly for several seconds. I executed sword jump slash (Triangle Triangle Square Cross, Right Left Right) and killed it instantly, after another couple of stabs because I forgot to finish with another Triangle.

My team was so impressed they mutinied and insisted I be court-martialed and returned to Valinor immediately once we had spent months climbing back down. Fortunately all were uninjured and fully capable of making the trip. They were all good friends.

I have a deep hatred of how disrespectful this team has been to those who simply genuinely love the source material, just this arrogant flippant idea they are going to improve the source material and make it more relevant today by modernizing it. I repeat, the way Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and so forth, do not need to be modernized because they are written to be timeless. To say this even simpler, if you make a period piece it's jarring to shoehorn modern ideas into it because anyone who knows that ancient culture will be brought out of the suspension of disbelief. I could not be more disappointed, and for the record, my personal complaints have zero to do with diversity casting, it has to do with a shameless disregard for source material and a general hostility to those who do. Remember, Lord of the Rings was considered for ages an un-filmable series of books. Even Tolkien was against it, to be fair. Regardless, Peter Jackson did an admirable job, and was asked to give notes on this series, was sent a pilot script, sent notes, and in his own words, was ghosted. In the span of two episodes this show already seams to have ruined all the characters from the original stories by making them into something they never were. They have added new meaningless shallow characters just to make the show politically correct or to make it «similar» to the characters in the original works (for example female sam&frodo). If you just wanted to make a story about a strong female warrior protagonist with all the nuances of the people of the world today you should have done so with a new IP, but don’t market it as something in J.R.R Tolkien’s universe because it obviously does not fit in and shows no respect for the source material. The rest of the production.. from script to acting, directing and editing would have caused the creation of the word 'cringe' had it not already existed before. Visually it is beautiful but it does not seem that they have spent more money than in Game of Thrones, but much much less. Maybe in future episodes we'll see that billion dollars they've spent.
As for the story, it seems that it is not the original of the books but rather it is a story invented by them. This does not matter to me if the series is good and entertains me, but it is not the case because the simple concepts are explained ad nauseam, but the complicated concepts are never explained.
At the end of the day it is a boring and soulless series. A missed opportunity to do something great, down the drain.

I was already skeptical about this series when these two guys were announced as showrunners, and then we had the "we need to implement the modern world through Tolkien" and then they fired the Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey for warning the creators that the story they were producing had nothing to do with what Tolkien had written. And then came the whole amazon's PR disaster with the 'super fans' and the cast all saying they want to "correct Tolkien", "modernize Tolkien". (Tolkien's work is timeless, it doesn't need politics or "modernization".). And then I realized, we don't have a group of creators and actors here, but just a bunch of activists that are very arrogant and narcissists when speaking about the world created by Tolkien, saying all the time that they want to "correct it", and also that they want to "see themselves" on it. That's just my opinion, but wouldn't it be better for Amazon to spend the budget buying mirrors for them? Seems that's all they wanted, with a 1bi budget, amazon could send a free mirror to anyone who has a Prime subscription. Another sign of disrespect was the release of this series on the day that Tolkien died. So I ask Amazon, "Why do you hate Tolkien this much?" Why give a 1bi dollar budget to a group of people who hate Tolkien? For whom was this series made? What was the purpose? From the two eps released, you can see how amateur and boring the writing and dialogue really is, characters are lifeless, don't have any charisma, they reduced Galadriel, from a very powerful being, close to a Goddess in the world of Tolkien, to just a character who complains about everything, is always angry and thinks she is nothing without a full body armor and sword. The elves are very uncharacterized, looking old and aged, and with their variety of short haircuts it was very difficult to see the difference between them and a simple human. Galadriel's fight against a cgi Troll was boring, it felt like she was fighting against air, the movements with he sword was too acrobatically, making the fight looking really fake, and her soldiers all looked dumb and useless. Is that kind of fight that you would expect from elves? And what about those hobbit prototype? The so called "harfoots", what are they supposed to be? They looked more like the lost boys from Peter Pan seen in the movie Hook than any characters written by Tolkien. Hobbits were more clean, not dirty with a salad on their heads. Characters dialogues are also boring, they all try to sound “epic”, “poetry” and “wise” and they fail on every phrase spoken. Expand

The pacing was very boring, and a lot of stuff didn't really make sense. It felt like just watching a bunch of scenes strung together with no overall plot. Plus the acting was all around pretty terrible except for a few ok performances. The CG was fine, but honestly not really breathtaking or mind blowing, it just looked like the saem type of stuff from every Marvel movie

There is zero respect for Tolkien’s lore. And I am not talking about all those woke elements, I didn’t actually mind them. I am talking about making an epic fantasy into a Shrek tv show. Most of the characters are totally miscasted, Galadriel especially has zero charm, zero talent. Numenor’s queen looks like a fat pig. All the others poor actors look like cheap cosplayers

The plot is really miserable, blunt, stupid and boring. The scene where they show Faenor’s hammer, clean, new and shiny, and then they talk about the silmarilis is a precise example how random, superficial and barbaric this show is

If you are around 10 years old, never heard of Tolkien and possibly never read a book in your life, you might find this show appreciable. For all the other I suggest you to ‘run you fools’

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well dad, you really f’d this up. Firstly I am not a bot. Nor am I a troll. Nor am I some alt-right guy who has a problem with diversity. Isn’t it sad that we have to start putting disclaimers in front of our opinions and reactions? Ok, off we go. Rings of Power. It looked amazing. It would seem that every one of those billion dollars was sunk into making it visually outstanding. They get a 9/10 for the art direction and special effects. I really enjoyed Arondir. He has an otherworldly quality making him brilliant casting as an elf. Sorry racists but he killed it. He gets an 8/10.

If only the rest of the show came even close.

I don’t use this word lightly, but I honestly hated it. Really, truly hated it. Rings of Power is probably the most disappointing and awful thing I have seen in recent memory.

The writing is not just amateurish, it’s incompetent. The acting is reminiscent of what you see on daytime soap operas. The direction is lifeless. The casting is a dumpster fire, and how any of this was allowed to go beyond a pitch meeting boggles the mind. I understand that the pedigree of the showrunners includes a bad Star Trek film and turning a ride from Disneyland into a movie. It shows. These are the guys who shoehorned in the Not-Hobbits because they said it just didn’t feel right without Hobbits. Who cares that Tolkien said Hobbits were not a part of Middle-Earth at this point. What did he know anyway. He probably didn’t even use focus groups. (thats sarcasm by the way, the bit about focus groups)

To me this indicates that they actually give zero f’s about the substance of Tolkien and more about creating a clever forgery to make a buck. Not-Frodo and Not-Sam are supposed to engender happy feelings I assume for anyone shallow enough to only need surface similarities to feel they’re watching LOTR. The poor actors cast as the Harfoots are really trying. But even the best actors can’t do much if all they’re given are grotesque parodies of other characters. Sadly, Not-Frodo and Not-Sam come across as insulting imitations. But 4/10 for the effort. And then there’s the elves. Oh Elves. Like I said above, at least Arondir was half-decent.

Galadriel is brutal. Stinking brutal. The way the character is written, her lines, the actress’s one-dimensional performance. All of it. The character and the actress are absolutely awful. And this seems to be our main character. The bit where she swims across AN ENTIRE OCEAN. I laughed out loud when that happened. Then I cringed. Then laughed and cringed at once. But not in a good way. Whatever might have been salvaged from this show is lost due to the perfect storm of bad ideas, bad writing and bad acting that is the abortion of Galadriel. She is easily the worst of all the many, many mistakes this show has made. 0/10 and that’s being generous. Gil-Galad comes across as a bumbling idiot and poor Elrond is hapless, ineffectual, weak and pretty much everything opposite to how the character was written. 0/10

Rings of Power is an insult to Tolkien and anyone who loves Tolkien. Sadly, Season 2 has already been greenlit so unfortunately this pile will continue. In a just world, every copy of this project would be destroyed. Burn the sets, the costumes, and pretend it just never happened. But, we live in a world where a mega-corporation can disfigure and ruin something as beloved as Tolkien either as a result of arrogance or a complete lack of understanding of the audience and source material. Again, I didn’t just dislike it. I really, truly hated it. It is heartbreaking to see something you love debased this badly. It’s also worth mentioning that the showrunners and Amazon accusing everyone who disliked this show of racism is vile. The actors of colour and the visuals were about the only things that didn’t suck. It says something about Prime, Amazon and the showrunners when their only response to people pointing out how bad the show is to call them racists. Apparently Bezos’ son said to him “dad, don’t f this up.” Well. Sorry dad. You really, really, really f’d this up.

At least that would explain why both the writing and acting are what one would expect from a middle school drama club which lacks funding, guidance and motivation.
Therefore, the audiovisual quality of the show stands out almost like a beacon of hope in contrast to the writing and acting. Neither of those potentially positive aspects of this show however are groundbreaking or even anything that could be considered special. The quality itself is good, but unfortunately it is also generic to the point where it could be from any fantasy film with a decent budget from the last ten years.
From the trailers I have expected this to potentially be a decent show when taken out of the Tolkien universe. But unfortunately, even that seems to have been too high of an expectation. The plot points are mostly contrived and nonsensical, the dialogue reminds one of what is expected from a teenager who believes himself much more intellectual than he truly is. Sounding "deep" is of more importance than actually communicating anything of substance, while also failing at the former in a hilarious twist.
The at times overwhelming dissonance between what is shown and what is told means that even if there was no original lore that is being blatantly ignored, it would still be a complete failure.

Finally, the show is here, he first two episodes that is, and we can watch it. I have seen the episodes and sadly the hope that I had very fast turned in to dread.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly...

    The Good

The visuals are really beautiful, every landscape shot is true pleasure for the eyes. The music is epic and strong. Durin IV is the best character. And that is it.

    The Bad

It seems like the show was written by unexperienced high schoolers. The dialog is horrible, the way the characters act is blend, boring and at times illogical. There are scenes that are even stupid and hard to believe that characters would behave like that, even their motives seem really off. The writers have tried to make the dialog as something deep and with bigger meaning, but they have utterly failed to do so, instead it sounds stupid, rushed and superficial. The costimography is simply horrible. I have seen cosplayers making bar better props than those in the show, both in quality and design.

    The Ugly

This sadly is anything but going back to Middle-Earth. A complete and total desecration of Tolkien's work. Some of the characters are so changed they are brought to the point of being unrecognizable. Sadly, one of my favorite characters in the books, Galadriel has been reduced to a miserable soldier fully driven by revenge, with no regard for the lives of those around her. Her reasoning is deeply flat and irrational, her actions make her seem even more bland. The show deviates so much from Tolkien's work that this simply is not Middle-Earth. The worst thing is that even we we remove all nomenclature that connects the show to the professor, it is still a bad show, badly written. It feels like the showrunners have no respect for the audience and are offering a shallow plot and even more shallow characters, expecting that the audience will just gobble up the low quality product. The disrespect for Tolkien is also very evident, considering how they butchered the professor's writings and lore.

It saddens me deeply to see the professor's work desecrated like this. His stories deserve better. This show is anything but Tolkien, this is anything but Middle-Earth, and those characters are nothing compared to their original source material characters. Bad in so many ways.

Love, loyalty, loss and lust were the main themes of the magnus opus which is the Lord of the Rings. Amazon's atrocity has no such themes other then to destroy and cheapen Tolkien's mythos. 2-Laziness, this series makes you lazy to continue watching it. It doesn't have a quality soundtrack, it's very random and boring. There is no character that stands out.
The script deserves a rewrite from top to bottom. It has boring dialogues.
The story is not canon. This never happened in the original work. So this series either you take it as an attack on the original work, or you take it as a joke since nothing that happens in this series really happened in the original work.

The bad milk of the showruners and the studio is criminal. Premiering the series on the anniversary of Tolkien's death is not a random decision. Do you want to rewrite the original work?
It is also bad milk to make viewers believe that the work is by Tolkien by putting it in the title. "The Lord of the Rings. The Rings of Power" when this story has nothing to do with the play The Lord of the Rings.

There are ways to make a prequel, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power gets them all wrong. It takes six or seven things that everyone remembers from the famous movie trilogy, adds a water tank, makes no one have fun, provokes mysteries that aren't mysteries, and sends the best character on a pointless detour. The latter is the super elf Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) who spends the premiere telling people to worry about Sauron. In response, the people tell him not to worry about Sauron.

My first metacritic review: first read LOTR in 70's. I have read some of the reviews here of RoP, many negative. First my take then a general remark.
My take: visuals are excellent, writing is poor. OK that it starts slow as long as some coherent narrative emerges with character-driven plots and journeys. If the dialogs don't improve I might lose interest. This was sub-par writing.

Remark: the same sort of sub-par writing that happened with Jackson films which started off great in #1 (because they largely kept to the book), worse in #2 and worst in #3 during which latter they hardly kept to the original dialogues at all. I don't mind that film-makers need to make changes but when they do so and the result is uniformly much worse than the original, it shows the film-makers don't have a good feel for the original. For me the Jackson Trilogy was more bad than good. They didn't convey the evil of the Nazgul, nor the fear they generated, not even close. Aragorn rarely manifest any royal or kingly presence, most of the time he was unempt, unwashed, dirty-looking. That said, Gollum was maybe better than in the book and many scenes in the film and much of the acting was excellent. Just a lot of flaws and unnecessary rotten dialog.

This Rings of Power is like moving on from where Jackson's poor dialog and editing left off. I fear the story is not going to have a core. Part of the appeal of LOTR is not just the fantasy aspect but that it depicts a world that is different from our modern world, a world with more depth and integrity shown both by the good and evil characters. It rings true somehow. The young screenwriters (much like with Game of Thrones final seasons) do not understand the depth and wisdom in the original work and continually undermined it it in LOTR and since here they are making up most of the scenes with character and dialogue, and given how the first two episodes went, I suspect they are not up to it.

The music, costumes and settings were great. It's going to be worth watching. But they will have paid far too much for something whose writing is far too shallow.

this is below a fanfic, it's a shame so much lost potential.
It is so easy to do something good even with Tolkien's appendices, but to many experts the correct prediction, the screenwriters fall short of the grandeur of the professor's work.

Amazing comeback to Middle-earth. The second era being shown for the first time is something to behold. Story already known, but more in-depth. Spectacular visuals, top-notch performances. And an incredible soundtrack mark the triumphant return to the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Blatant disrespect for the source material, poor incompetent storytelling, completely uninteresting characters, constant attempts to parasitize on the film trilogy with an inept attempts to add something of their own – so a rather beautiful image leaves indifferent. Simply, this is not Tolkien, as well as not worthwhile cinema.

Отвратительная поделка, нагло паразитирующая на имени Профессора. Ставлю 2, только за более-менее хорошую графику

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disaster of biblical proportions! If this continues (I've seen 2 episodes) I will stop watching. Galadriel (she's called that in the show but she is not really Galadriel) is such an OP character that I expect her to kill Sauron and destroy the one ring herself saving the fellowship unnecessary trip to Mount Doom. And she'll do it in season one. Season two will be her dealing with russian agression on Ukraine and finally season three she will bring world peace. Last two seasons she will be frolicking in the woods with her best gay friend Elrond. Expand

Adar’s début drips with signifiers. ... When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.

The Rings of Power is a reminder of what drew many of us to epic fantasy in the first place: wonder. ... This series set in an ancient realm displays one dazzling and painterly landscape after another. Power also doesn't skimp on action. [12 - 25 Sep 2022, p.10]
