Expand

This is some of the most absolute boring stuff I've ever seen. They are ungodly promoters of "the message" . Bad diolauge, bad actors and actresses, and awful destruction of Tolkien's beautiful work. It's a shame shows are allowed to even be made like this. Go ahead and just keep reading Tolkien's books.

The characters and story are weak, the conversations could be written by a 10 year old. Amazon wonders why the show gets bad reviews and blames it on "review bombing". Ridiculous.

What's good: CGI and visuals are stunning.

What's wrong: The plot is horrible, the dialogues are amateurish, here's an example meant to be a deep speech: "Do you know why a stone sinks and a boat floats? Because the stone only watches down to the bottom and therefore it can only go that way, while a boat looks upward to the sky with it's sails and so it floats". Excuse me? I can't believe it was approved.
The main character is basically mono-dimensional.
What is worse is that that there is no point where "it clicks" and brings me inside its world (Like Avatar or example), it just feels boring, slow and full of unnecessary (but beautiful) CGI.
A fantasy show or book HAS to immerse you inside its world, letting you forget about reality.
This show simply doesn't. It doesn't really matter that it doesn't stick to Tolkien's original work, because as I said I approached it with ZERO expectations.
However it doesn't tell you a new, exciting and wonderful adventure.

It's very funny to see how the negative reviews are downvoted hundreds of times in a very short time, and the positives are upvoted in equal amounts, even though only 600 people have rated the series itself positively.

But of course only the negative reviews are reviewbombing, Amazon would never manipulate the ratings for their outrageously expensive series ;)

That and the defamation of their own customers as racists and trolls is actually enough to boycott Rings of Power and Amazon.

    For the actual review:

If you force diversity contrary to lore, it usually comes across as very artificial and immersion disturbing. But that's no reason for a series to be considered bad per se, as House of The Dragon shows.

If you take one of the most important writers in world literature to sell his product, but then rewrite the story of this writer to the point beyond recognition, that is highly outrageous.
On the one hand it's disrespectful to someone's life's work, on the other hand it's cheating on the viewers who expect something specific under this title.
But even that doesn't have to be a guarantee that the series is bad.

But with these terrible conditions, it doesn't stop there.

First of all, many reviewers think that the series looks good. It's certainly a matter of taste, but I can't share this impression. The world looks extremely artificial. The original Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as Harry Potter and Game of Thrones have created much more organic looking worlds. The look of Rings of Power doesn't create any immersion for me, I feel like I'm in the cinematic opening credits of a video game.
And then there are the horrible costumes including Elvis hairstyle for the elves...who would think it was a good idea to depict Middle-earth in this way when Tolkien's work has been illustrated for over 70 years.
But even bad costumes and cold backdrops cannot completely destroy a show.

But Rings of Power also has extremely stereotyped characters. For example, Galadriel is the worst Mary Sue I have seen in ages, and of course she is the lonely heroine who is held down by everyone else, when on her own she could liberate all of Middle-earth if only she were let... who does that please written? A writing class to avoid the worst rookie mistakes might have been helpful

Speaking of writing: where it really gets cringe here are the dialogues. A schoolchild could have written it. "You didn't see what I saw" "Yes I did" "No you didn't" ...

"The evil here is so strong that the torches no longer warm us. This way."
"How can you be so sure?!"
    "It's colder than anywhere else."

"It's a miracle that the tree grows here with the little light." "Where there is love there is always light."

    Wow

And then we have the tiny little problem that the series (so far) has no story.
We see Galadriel's brother Finrod for 3 seconds, then it is told that he was killed and now Galadriel hunts Sauron, who will definitely show up at some point, even if nobody believes it for whatever reason... This must be enough.
Again, for a modern video game, such a story start would be thin. For a film, let alone a series, this is simply insufficient.

I can still remember a German video game series that was very popular in this country. The last part came out in 2006: Gothic 3. Since there were massive time bottlenecks and money problems during development, the game was never really finished. The starting quest of this unfinished game was "Find Xadras" (For he is apparently a traitor). And this quest then drove you all over the continent of the game world.
At the time, players were upset about this lack of imagination. That was in 2006 in a video game, a small German studio that had massive development problems.

Now here we are, 16 years later, the international giant amazon is producing the most expensive series ever made and the starting quest is: "Find Sauron" (Because he murdered your brother (so even simpler than in Gothic 3)).

    lol just lol

The most positive thing I can say about the series is that it doesn't look as cheap as Xena. In relation to the budget, however, Rings of Power still looks very cheap. And Xena at least had more likeable characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This series could have been the most epic fantasy story ever told but it's not.

Loosely based on the works of JRR Tolkien, a 3,500 year age has been compressed to a few years, with characters new and old that would never have crossed paths and some that are completely different. The story is not Tolkiens original work. Galadriel, the second most powerful elf only to Feanor, who is now portrayed as a warrior with all the toxic masculine attributes you don't want to see is on a random mission with "looks can be deceiving" Sauron. Elrond is playing a role he never was, traveling several hundreds of miles with no provisions or support except for Celebrimbor who he then turns back once reaching his destination. None of the factions make sense with mixed ethnicities in supposedly close nit off the map tribes who have hidden from the world for a thousand years. The elves don't look like elves, they're not tall or fair but short haired, mixed racial, human looking that you'd only recognise when they focus on the slightly pointed ears. For a fan, it's not Tolkien, for a casual viewer you're left with huge holes, no context, characters you dislike immediately and a very slow progression that's frankly pointless detours.

As for the 'woke' controversy/diverse casting, it's... whatever. As a Tolkien fan, I don't exactly like the lore being trodden on, but if it was done well and resulted in a decent show then whatever, can overlook it. Unfortunately, it misses everything it aims for. It's not an outright disaster, but it's bland, mediocre. Dull. And in many ways that's even worse, as this isn't even in the 'so bad it's good' category to become a cult hit.

It's going to do well short term, as people will be intrigued by the budget and expecting a lot given it's Lord of the Rings. But this is LOTR in name only, and I expect people to tune out very quickly.

Galadriel is an emotionless Karen, acted with the passion of a dry potato. Some musical cues are nice but it mostly sounds like they just followed a manual, it is expensive-sounding but ultimately soulless and mostly uninspired. Visually it looks very expensive and is rich in color and light effects, but poor in actual cinematography and camera work - again they just followed a manual. Somehow they managed to make it look fancy and fake at the same time, cgi can't replicate all the tiny little imperfections and details and random texture of real life - and this show uses a LOT of cgi. Enough has already been said about the often embarrassing dialogue, by-the-numbers screenplay and general story that deviates completely from the source material. Half of the characters are pure fanfiction with mostly pointless and unimportant subplots which the show tries to make seem important and is all the worse for it, 'filler' is a drastic word to use but it seems appropriate here. One of my biggest problems is the language, or rather lack thereof; it's just plain straight-up modern day english. Where is the elevated old-english language that Tolkien wrote so beautifully? And why do they pronounce elvish+adunaic names and places in the most forced and unnatural way possible? It sounds like they practiced to make it sound practiced, especially the actor of Galadriel. The total dumbing down of the language is the biggest reason why this show feels empty to me, and in combination with soap opera-level acting it compounds that even further. TRoP largely feels fake and empty, because there is no true inspiration or artistic vision behind it. It is just very expensive confetti, that spits in the face of arguably the most loved and revered work of fantasy that has ever been created, and that is why I give this show a rating of 2/10. Expand

Let's be it. First of all: The storytelling is dull and chaotic. I.e., Gal is going to North 'several years', at least, - but returning from there by 'one moment' and nothing is in between. Oops! Acting and dialogues are rough, pathetic and without any meaning.
If I'd try to be short I'd say - 'do not waste your time!'. But such a sharp opinion requires some details, indeed.

    Let's be it.

First of all: The storytelling is dull and chaotic. I.e., Gal is going to North 'several years', at least, - but returning from there by 'one moment' and nothing is in between. Oops!

Acting and dialogues are rough, pathetic and without any meaning. Fighting cruel elvish children? Mutiny in elvish team? Gal, jumping from the ship and swimming back from the Far West gates and Light of Valinor? Are you kidding?

Women as the 'acting force'... Let me not to explain that it cannot be in THAT world. It ruins one of milestones of story. Rare 'women with sword' in LOTR are just forced to take this role - and they hate it. Here we have, at least, three of them in a first episode at once. And they LOVE it.

Then, again - I presume, creators do not know what is the 'race' word meaning. They ruined races of elves, dwarves and even those we call 'hobbits' to the 'modern requirements' (you know what I mean).

What a saga without good fight? Here's some, in the first episode. And it looks ugly - i.e. troll ruins FIVE elves, but fiercy Gal is coming, camera shows 'zig-zag-zag', and boom! - troll is dead. Game over. Another one is epic fight between elves and orcs, and I don't even want to discuss about this. It's just a one big mess.

Elves are perfect, we all know. But not here. Old elves. Ugly elves. Muscular elves. The only thing you can recognize the elf is his ear.

I don't even want to remark about 'gipsy hobbits' or 'middle age men' (hey - it's Middle-Earth, not middle-age!). Full picture is total waste.

I watched only first episode. I want to see body-positive dwarves - and then I'll drop the show to trashcan. Sorry, Professor! - and I'm glad you don't see it.

So, that alongside the organised efforts to downvote the bad reviews here on metacritic (which happened between wednesday and thursday*), and the deletion of the Imdb reviews under 6/10.

And presumably had something to do with Youtube removing the dislike button after the adverts for the Bezos 'Rings' thing - for which Youtube were paid a seven figure sum to give prominence in their algorithms - got three million dislikes (which, if left, would have countered the artificial prominence and accordingly reduced viewers for the adverts).

Oddly - or not - none of the hundreds of news outlets that ran Amazon's version of the reason for the review-pause have followed up on their story, even as the ban looks set to encompass and pass the release of subsequent episodes of the thing...

Oh, the review. Yes, it's crap.

Didn't like it. It's badly written and the black elf actor ruins every scene he's in. This show spits at Tolkien's legacy.

Dialogue – Whoever wrote the script for this show should never be allowed to write a script again. It was cringeworthy, amateurish and so bad and clichéd that it resembled something a school child would have written. I cannot believe that someone proof read this and thought it was good enough to use in a billion-dollar production. It was reminiscent of a bad Dungeons and Dragons game. Acting – Did they actually have auditions for this show, or did they go to the nearest amateur dramatic society. The acting in this show is subpar, wooden and I’ve honestly seen better acting from school productions. The delivery of lines is clumsy, awkward and unbelievable and dispels any reality they’re trying to create.
CGI – In places it was ok but in other scenes it was awful. Decent background visuals don’t make a decent show.
Politics – One thing that is certain to kill a show is the inclusion of identity politics. Personally, I want a show that allows me to escape the real world for awhile but I guess we now live in a world where amateurish activists make shows/movies and don’t care what works of literature or beloved characters they ruin in their rush to push a political agenda. Tolkien – I don’t know why Amazon would spend so much money in buying the rights to certain elements of Tolkien’s work and characters and then make this abomination of a show. Every aspect of what Tolkien wrote has been ignore and ruined by the rabid need of activists wanted to virtue signal. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, James Bond, Marvel, DC, Charlies Angels, Terminator, Ghostbusters, Men in Black, Mortal Kombat….how many more works of literature and pop culture will be ruined by these people. If you want to make a generic fantasy show then great but don’t use the name of Tolkien to push a show that has little to do with what Tolkien wrote.

It's also obvious to me that a lot of the positive comments are bots and woke people trying to protect a show that is pushing their politics, if not it staggers me that people are so easily pleased with being fed substandard garbage like this.

I used to giving this show 0 points now after watching 3 episodes I'm starting to like or at least tolerate southern elves and numenor visuals. I try stay positive so i give "2" because I care more about plot as nice visuals and CGI. Episodes are still too long and quite boring after half an hour. OF course I dont try see it as Tolkiens adaptation only random fantasy show with catchy names.

Review only applies to the first episode as I haven’t seen the second yet.

So far, this is a disaster. CGI is mostly good, with some very impressive landscape shots which I expect will get re-used as the season goes on. Casting is a mixed bag, but it hardly matters because the show seems to do its level best to prevent the audience from giving a single sh*t about any of its characters.

So far, this is a disaster. CGI is mostly good, with some very impressive landscape shots which I expect will get re-used as the season goes on. Casting is a mixed bag, but it hardly matters because the show seems to do its level best to prevent the audience from giving a single sh*t about any of its characters. The pacing is atrocious, and destroys any hope of getting any sort of handle on the stakes. Too little time is spent on character-establishing scenes, and way too much of the audience’s time is wasted on inconsequential “remember this guy from the books?” nostalgia introductions that backfire immediately because of odd casting decisions and introducing new characters with little to no context to them.

Why they insisted on front-loading their story by dumping all these nobodies on screen all at once is anyone’s guess, but it completely destroyed any investment I might have had in wanting to learn more. Galadriel’s character assassination is so complete that the only scene where she displays any sort of personality trait beyond “revenge-obsessed stubbornness” is unearned, because it relies on a relationship that happened off-screen, several hundred years before the events of the show.

In short, whoever approved this screenplay likely doomed the show for a lot of folks. People are saying that episode 2 isn’t quite as horrendous, but now it’s feeling like a chore to have to sit back with this mess.

It’s not a zero, obviously. A lot of painstaking work went into the effects and the sets. But when you have artists carefully sculpting fake wood statues that are then used as elven mausoleums carved into LIVING TREES, you know you just ruined all that work because it’s all pointless.

    This isn’t Tolkien.

Edit: My score hasn't changed after watching episode 02 and I don't think I'll continue.

Edit 2: I lowered it because it keeps getting stupider.

The changes to Galadriel and Elrond are a perversion of Tolkien!  Galadriel is a Mary Sue in every sense of the term.  She is the best at everything, no weaknesses, smarter than everyone around her and stronger than any man.  This "Warrior Galadriel" is a complete joke and totally unlikeable.  It took the entire Fellowship to take down the cave troll in the Mines of Moria and she takes down a snow troll singlehandily, Matrix Style in seconds.  Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, Boromir, Legolas and all the hobbits barely took down the cave troll.  Elrond is now a scholar and a politician and a Cuck as well.  Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings to create a mythology for England because most of England's mythology was lost due to all the times they were conquered.  It makes no sense for such a diverse casting set in this region and time frame.  And seeing it completely pulls you out of the story.  Tolkien was pretty damn specific when he described all the different races.  If you put some white guys in Wakanda tribes in Black Panther most people would be in a uproar.  Not to mention it would be absolutely ridiculous!  If this was a newly created fantasy show with no connection to Tolkien then I think most people wouldn't have a problem with it, but calling this The Lord of the Rings in the title is where Amazon is pissing off Tolkien fans.  Attacking us as "Toxic Fandom" is getting so old and played out.  "Evil cannot create anything new, they can only corrupt and ruin good forces have invented or made” Expand

It seeks to destroy Tolkien's magnificent novel Universe, but if you really are a gatekeeper for the great old books and Peter Jackson's legendary trilogy, the Amazon series won't put a dent into it, no matter how hard they try. By all means watch it, but you'll only watch it once never to return to this cheap looking expensive paid tv show. I'll say this, it does show me that TLOTR was meant to be a filmic experience on the big screen and not a weekly small screen affair - doesn't work even if it attempts to ape Game of Thrones, that started on the small screen and the world has had over a decade to get use to that show even if it was filmed cinematic for large screen battles.

Bref, quelle grosse daube !

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to give this show a fair chance, but holy Hobbit, what a mess!

Where to start? Elves whose hairstyles are reminiscent of a poorly made Pop music video from the 80s and for whom actors have been cast who don't look like immortals at all. Plus: A one-dimensional main character who, miles away from the shores of Middle-earth, goes for a swim in the biggest plot hole since the penultimate episode of the final season of Game of Thones - and who, thousands of years later, still behaves like a defiant child whose self-made paper ship has just been sunk. For whom nothing is at stake at any time, because this very special elf is able to kill a troll in 30 seconds, which took Legolas and the Fellowship almost ten minutes in the mines of Moria. Infantile harfoots, whose scenes are sometimes reminiscent of a sitcom from the 50s, but where you wait in vain for the laughter to fade in in the background. And when two elves, without provisions, without horses and above all - without any presentable delegation, walk miles to get an audience with a dwarf prince, only for one of them (who, by the way, is the most important blacksmith in Middle-earth) to be allowed to make the long, arduous journey back...then, dear viewer you truly wonder whether this Is High Fantasy or a Brigand's Tale.

Fortunately, it turns out that the diverse cast, which some "so-called trolls" have questioned in advance, cannot and will not have any influence at all on this review. How could it, given that we live in an age in which heated discussions are justifiably triggered when historical or fictional films are not cast with appropriately ethnically correct leading actors because people want to renounce the "white-whashing" of times past. It is anything but politically correct and respectful to miscast, for example, Scarlett Johannson in the live-action adaptation of the Japanese anime masterpiece "Ghost in the Shell" or John Wayne as Genghis Khan. Who would think of casting Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan with Caucasian actors, like in "Breakfast at Tiffany's"? And just to make it absolutely clear: I think that's a good thing! But why do the opposite here? Especially when you know in advance that the majority of Tolkien fans seem to worship all his works as "history" with almost religious zeal.

Leaving aside the pointlessness of such a discussion: not everyone will have the opportunity to see the first two episodes in the cinema on a big screen, so that at least some of the really great images can unfold their effect. And this despite the fact that the CGI effects are unfortunately clearly perceived as such and some things look like ultra-graphic settings in a computer game. But if, like most people, you can only watch the whole thing on a normal TV, then the sheer glamour of this big visually blown-up nothingness fades very quickly and you concentrate on what really makes a good TV series: A compelling script with main characters that you can and want to sympathise with. Unfortunately, the vast majority here is reduced to a moderately written soap opera full of clichés. And no - I don't expect the quality of the whole thing to improve significantly, at least not in the first season, but I sincerely hope for a more differentiated development of the main protagonists in the future - especially that of a certain person.

In the end, all that remains for me is the realisation that this is probably more of a retelling of the fairy tale "The Emperor's New Clothes". Only this time, the majority of critics praise the sheer finesse and epic grandeur of the "outfit", whereas the majority of hardcore fans will put it more honestly:

"The emperor isn't wearing anything at all!"

I'm giving it a 1/10 for some pretty pictures. Expand

Gaudy and nonsensical. And everything else made to look similarly fake and artificially lit to accomodate the cgi. Including the actors, who already looked like a bunch of D&D larper tw*ts as it was.

Overall it strikes the same visual key as one of Johnny Depp's promos for his sausage-perfume. 'Essence of wetness', etc. Also share similar modes of storytelling.

But who signed Lenny-f.ing-Henry !?! Did nobody tell them ? "Top of di mornin', mon !" - wtf...?

And what happened to the head on the Shorty-the-Elf Elrond character ? Was he stomped on ?

You've got to ask yourself how this ever got through the approval process to begin with.

    So incredibly disappointed.

The cast ruined this for me. Few of them looked like they belonged in the world. A handful were trash. It just goes to show that SJWs shouldn't be allowed anywhere near Tolkien's works, bacause they sully his memory with their woke filth.

I didn't care for it. All that money spent and they ruin it with a cast of Z listers. The ugly old hobbit creature - you know who I mean - was easily the worst. They really phoned these performances in. Utter dross.

    1. Your main actor Galadriel is just terrible...... from the acting, dialogues, face expression, actions, etc...
    2. The elf Arondir ....... terrible acting, basically the same face expression, 0 empathy with the character.
    3. The main story has nothing to do with the books, everything was changed for worst.
    4. The female SAM and female Frodo....... I hope they have a real purpose in the series.....
    5. The only salvable characters in the series i think it was Elrond, Durin and his wife. Their acting and interaction was interesting and wholesome.

I wonder how to rate the series? I have been an avid Tolkien reader for over 25 years and was already frustrated after the prologue, since they had already completely abandoned the original. After that, there was really only fan fiction. After 20 minutes at the latest I would have liked to switch off, because this series is simply not for me, but my wife wanted to continue watching. We finished the first two episodes and were both really bored. The dialogues are terrible, I wanted to fast forward.

The main character I can only measure with the original. From one of the most graceful, feminine, good-natured, powerful characters and aura with authority, they made a permanently angry, narcissistic and condescending twen.

So how do I assign the grade? As a fan of the Tolkien originals, 0 points, as the series is unwatchable for me. However, it would be unfair to those who are responsible for the wonderful landscape shots and Bear McCreary, even if it is not his best score.

    2/10.

Transphobic rubbish. The lack of an Asian Trans character is the true betrayal of Tolkiens' vision. How amazon can justify this al-right stance is beyond me..

I wanted to give it a chance, I really tried...but I was not able to finish the two episodes. Every character is just not interesting, the dialogs are so superficial and boring, and the pace of the move is way to slow, and nothing really happens. I really can't find anything positive aside from the CGI which sometimes seems a bit...too much.

We'd been warned that this was going to be garbage. I watched the first eppisode, and it's shockingly bad. The dialogue sounds like it's out of a cop movie, dreadful wire work, I could go on and on about how disappointing this is.

Adar’s début drips with signifiers. ... When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.

The Rings of Power is a reminder of what drew many of us to epic fantasy in the first place: wonder. ... This series set in an ancient realm displays one dazzling and painterly landscape after another. Power also doesn't skimp on action. [12 - 25 Sep 2022, p.10]
