Horrible. So we have a US destroyer sailing and operating in Canadian Northern Waters. Arrives in July and leaves 4 months later. So next part we have a major air born Virus only this ship escapes due to its northern location. But every one on the planet gets sick, even those in Bio Protective stations. But they pull up next to a ship with dead sick people and are okay?

Now back to the destroyer. So now you have 5 Russian Helicopters flying in -50 weather *cough* and they manage to get that far. *boogle*

Now 3 of them fire 4 missiles at the destroyer. All of them unguided tube launched. But one goes after the chaff and heat launcher? Huh? They are unguided. And why did the close in defense systems not fire? And how did they let such large heavy slow hostile aircraft get that close? Inept?

Now 3 missiles hit the Destroyer 1 in the bridge 2 in the Phased Radar. These Destroyers have Light Aluminum skins. They are not designed to take direct missile strikes, this is not an armored Battle Ship.

We have 0 crew casualties.. and not even a scratch in the paint? Wow... that is one heck of a ship.

Nothing from a military stand point makes any sense, none of the plot makes sense.. none of the science makes sense. Its like they took a bunch of cool ideas tossed it into a blender and poured it into a glass. They figured all the cool things would make a cool drink... its pretty darn sour.

Not great but find myself watching it anyway. As the series moves on one thing that really really bothers me is that the keep referring to the disease as "the disease". Don't you think that "the disease" would have been given a name by someone after months of wiping out the whole planet?

Much of the characters' behavior and dialogue is ludicrously unrepresentative of what actually goes on aboard a warship, including how officers and enlisted personnel interact. Yes, I realize that the show's premise, that of "OMG, we're the last ship!", might well result in behaviors way outside the norm, but not the kind that's been written into this script. Here are just two examples among several. The master chief asks a LTJG on the ship's bridge for "permission to salute the captain." Ridiculous. The XO salutes the captain/CO while uncovered. Would never happen. US Navy personnel never salute unless "covered" (hat on). Only exception would be if on temporary duty with a foreign military service and it might be embarrassing not to return the salute of a junior from that service who was not aware of USN custom. What always puzzles me about such gaffes is how they get past the USN technical advisor who's always part of the deal struck between the movie studio and the Navy's public affairs office when providing Navy assets for such flicks. Other than my parochial complaints. I find the show reasonably entertaining. Expand

Such as a hard swallow or forceful exhale. My father was a Navy man. Emotion was not shown. As for what exposed skin can endure, I can only say I've seen numerous reality shows with people out in -50 conditions and they survive. As to how the crew acts. Again one must remember the premise of the show. No more governments, no rules, etc. So they operate the best they can. It's a TV show. Made for entertainment, which I feel it does very well. I don't know anything about the naval realities so that wasn't the problem for me and for all i know the military part is realistic.
The dialogue is very poor and predictable including some cringeworthy one-liners especially in episode 5, the acting is ok but obviously limited by the script and maybe direction. The story in each episode has major logical fallacies while the overall story is intact (probably that's the faithful part of the novel).

I've watched three episodes now and I find myself interested enough to want to see the next one. Action level are pretty good. Acting is pretty cliche and stilted to match the predictable dialog. The Russian nemesis is a good idea and adds a cat and mouse element to things but in this case it's a little more tense since the mouse can fight back and does.

The characters tend to the melodramatic 95% of the time but they did add in a new character during their stop in Cuba that has some life in him, so hopefully THAT will become INFECTIOUS too, like the virus they are fighting. Most of the characters are likeable, though some get way more screen time than I'd care for and others not enough.

Part of the show kind of has a USN recruiting video quality to it, might just be the stock footage of a destroyer they use.

All in all, its still pretty entertaining and I don't think they've run out of potential quite yet so I'll stick around to the end of the season.

As a retired naval officer, I was reasonably satisfied with the series until the 20 July program. Both the Captain and X.O. would not have left the ship to pursue a dangerous mission up the river. The Captain's primary responsibility is the safety of the crew and the ship and he would have remained aboard his command while the X.O. led the shore party. Great drama in the jungle with the bandidos, but again very unlikely that both the CO and XO would have gone back to save the damsels in distress, risking their lives and the safety of the ship and crew. They would have sent an armed detachment back to fight evil, after they had safely delivered the research monkeys to the ship. The navy technical adviser must have been on vacation for this episode since it was so unrealistic and unbelievable. Even Capt Kirk and Spock would have been disappointed in this episode. This show has great action, excellent characters with good acting and I was enjoying it very much until this episode went "up the river".

The Last Ship, is a Great new show with lots of action. It is like watching a movie over several weeks, with high quality entertainment. This is a survival type show and those who like walking dead or falling skies will probably like this show too.

Solid summer throwaway show. Will probably watch it all as I'm curious to see where it goes. Kind of reminds me of a Robin Cook or Michael Crichton book. A little formulaic but still quite watchable.

Like Falling Skies, this end-of-the-world thriller thrives on drama more than anything. Some characters are believable and visceral, others are a little too rigid and unconvincing. While there are no real low points of the show, it also has a hard time completely taking off - that's a shame given that anyone can see flashes of an excellent TV series here. Because Michael Bay is behind it, there will be opportunities to continue where other shows would likely be paused or dropped. Let's hope Bay and his crew can build on what is a decent foundation for good TV. Expand

Despite it being called "The Last Ship", the show has a diverse array of settings and is not formulaic.

I'd say my strongest criticism is that it has a rocky start. The first episode was interesting, but the second episode was so generic and uninteresting I nearly stopped there. The series does create points in the plot where relative morality to a changing world becomes in question, but the characters just don't seem to care. If 85% of the world or whatever is killed by the plague, you would assume that the crew of the ship would put this into consideration. However, they do make this apparent in anyone not on the ship itself, so while annoying, it's not generically so. Also, some of the character motivations while complex, also seem lazy or simplified at times but in general the writing and directing is good enough for me not to mind.

Overall, while I personally enjoy it, there are several flaws in the series which I can see other people not being able to accept. Comparatively to other TV shows, it's mechanically well done, but the second episode especially may be too cringe-worthy for people to bare.

This had all the ingredients for a show I really didn't want to watch: Eric Dane chewing scenery, Rhona Mitra over/underacting (depending on how you look at it), a warship, Michael Bay... but, actually, it works.

I'm a bit of a fan of dystopian Sci-Fi and I didn't suspect this would tickle my 'when's the next episode' button, but it has. Usually Eric Dane's sonorous tones are enough

I'm a bit of a fan of dystopian Sci-Fi and I didn't suspect this would tickle my 'when's the next episode' button, but it has.

Usually Eric Dane's sonorous tones are enough to make me want to empty out the popcorn and use the bucket for something else and if I were honest, I do think he's miscast, but there's a host of decent supporting actors (surprisingly Alec Baldwin) that bring it on home.

The flaws in this series are legion, but it's escapist, lightweight, shoot-em-up and run-away-to-fight-another-day stuff - the kind I was reading when I was 12 - and as such, if you don't dwell too deeply and don't hold it to any sort of adherence to the laws of physics, you will be fine.

There is one technical decision they made that has been a plus - it could so easily have been a nuclear-powered ship, but making it dependent on oil has meant that there is always this nagging feeling about how long they can run before they need to resupply.

The plot has more red herrings than an East Anglia fishmarket, but it isn't hard to see where things are going, so its a comfortable level of distraction.

All in all, I was excited to see series 2, which is either a condemnation of the rest of the offerings or a surprising bolster to the credibility of The Last Ship as a vehicle to entertain.

But if I wanted a show to be all scientific, accurate and whatnot, then I'd watch the National Geographic or Discovery Channel. The mistakes aren't TOO obvious to the average TV viewer. I do have to admit at times “The Last Ship” feels slightly like a Navy “recruitment ad for the apocalypse”. The show does have some cheesy lines and what are (for now) cardboard cutout characters. And to top it off, the show isn’t much like the book it’s based on (but I could honestly care less about that). However, the reason this show is good is because it’s fun. It’s entertaining. I don’t expect it to be the next groundbreaking epic TV show like The Walking Dead, or Game of Thrones, or Breaking Bad…I just want a fun hour of entertainment. It’s like a “dumb” B-action movie. Leave logic at the door and have fun.

If you liked this review, read my other ones on movies, TV shows, and videogames. I have reviewed the 2014 films Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Edge of Tomorrow, X-Men Days of Future Past, Godzilla, Blended, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Lego Movie, and more. I am actually still trying to find time for other film reviews, such as Robocop, Non-Stop, Divergent, Need for Speed, The Monuments Men, etc. I also review TV shows, such as : Fox's "Sleepy Hollow", ABC's "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD", CW's "The 100", Fox's "I Wanna Marry Harry", NBC's "Crisis", Fox's "Gang Related" and more.
