There are only two or three recurring characters with dialogue in the three episodes sent to critics, only one of which is bestowed with a shred of backstory or distinctive personality. Even ignoring the impolitic elements of character development, however--which again, Moffat really shouldn’t have--the greater sin of The Last Post is that the writing is stodgy and unrealistic plot is as parched for tension and excitement as the dunes in the desert where these men and their families are stationed.

Yes, it is a bit soapy, and I have no doubt that the show may not be historically accurate, but most historical dramas are not accurate (even the ones that claim to be.) This is the best Amazon series I have seen (which isnt saying much, granted). I I enjoyed this show from start to finish and look forward to season 2. Full Review »

The series does a good job of showing how colonialism corrupts both the occupier and the occupied. The decay and corruption affects the British Military Police and their relationships with their wives. The focus on the unhappiness of the military wives is one of its strong points. It's a bit slow but the filming is gorgeous and the acting is superb. There is more than a passing resemblance to the film White Mischief which dealt with corruption of the British in Africa during World War II which also is recommended. Full Review »
