Excellent story arc, good acting, a setting never explored before, and an enjoyable British mid-60s era make for a great Season 1 of the Last Post. I am at a loss why this show has such a poor rating - perhaps the reviewers were expecting something different? Yes, it is a bit soapy, and I have no doubt that the show may not be historically accurate, but most historical dramas are notExcellent story arc, good acting, a setting never explored before, and an enjoyable British mid-60s era make for a great Season 1 of the Last Post. Yes, it is a bit soapy, and I have no doubt that the show may not be historically accurate, but most historical dramas are not accurate (even the ones that claim to be.) This is the best Amazon series I have seen (which isnt saying much, granted). I I enjoyed this show from start to finish and look forward to season 2. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The end of the British Empire. Set in Aden (now Yemen) at the start of the rebellion during the 1960's. The series does a good job of showing how colonialism corrupts both the occupier and the occupied. The decay and corruption affects the British Military Police and their relationships with their wives. The focus on the unhappiness of the military wives is one of its strong points. It's a bit slow but the filming is gorgeous and the acting is superb. There is more than a passing resemblance to the film White Mischief which dealt with corruption of the British in Africa during World War II which also is recommended. Expand

[Jessica Raine] brings a sultry, complicated vibe to a show that’s mostly square-jawed and obvious. She communicates the depths of boredom, loneliness and depression that afflict expatriate communities, and The Last Post gets interesting, rather than just pretty, whenever she’s onscreen.

Deliberate without being plodding and sumptuous without losing sight of the troubles below the surface, The Last Post is more than the standard period fare.

The socio-sexual side of the story is the real point of it all, and there’s a certain sauciness therein. But the military aspects of the tale are almost too familiar.
