To praise this is to disrespect all the people who worked really hard to make every tiny detail of the original game back in 2013 to be magnificent making it the atemporal masterpiece and legend it is.

It doesnt capture the essence and feel of the game, breaking the lore and making the story more poor, forgetable. Pedro Pascal is the worst live action Joel, and Bella Ramsey is the worst live action Ellie, but she surely is the best fluid liquid goblin, everyone in this series is misscasted. The Last of Us HBO is definitely one of the worst video game adaptation of all time, and not just that, but it is also a mediocre TV show, not even in the top 3 of early 2023. No one with an iq over 100 would think this **** is wothy of the name, the whole spirit and message of the story is changed, characters are nothing but a bad caricaturesque joke nothing alike the game ones. I cant conceive a human so retarded to had played the game and though this show adapt it correctly, must have lower iq than a bacteria, sure it eat its own **** and keep breathing because of luck. game franchise of all time, I’ve put around 1000 hours into TLoU games, and I’ve beat TLoU1 over 30 times and TLoU2 11 times so far. I have been excited for this adaptation since the day it was announced on March 5th, 2020, and being such a huge fan of the games I had very high expectations for this show, and it exceeded all my expectations. The Last of Us HBO is definitely the best video game adaptation of all time, and not just that, but it is also one of the best TV shows of all time. It has become my favourite Tv show of all time and I love it just as much as the games. The writing, casting, visual effects, music, acting, directing, environments, and everything is perfect. In my opinion Craig Mazin is the best writer in TV and Neil Druckmann is the best writer in video games, and together they made something truly remarkable. It captures the essence and feel of the game, while expanding upon the lore and making the story even richer. Pedro Pascal is the perfect live action Joel, and Bella Ramsey is the perfect live action Ellie, everyone in this series is perfectly cast. I love how they had some of the original actors from the games in the series as well. I’d recommend this series to literally everyone, if you’re a fan of the games you should watch this as it’s an amazing adaptation that will let you experience Joel and Ellie’s journey in a new way, and if you’ve never played the game that’s not a problem at all as this show is welcoming to newcomers with no knowledge of the games as well. Looking forward to a new episode of TLoU was the highlight of my week for 9 weeks, I’m sad that season 1 is over, but I will continue to rematch all the amazing episodes over and over again, I can’t wait for season 2! 10/10

Joel is a weak wimp nothing in common with the ruthlees tuff guy of the game. They only share they lost their daughter but even that had very different influent in their personality. In the game he was closed to express his feelings, blocked to every person. Meanwhile in the series he is crying everywhere and open to talk about it with others, like Tommy. Sonthen Ellie with her strong joyfull personality acts like the key to open Joel at the final instances of the s game, on hbo she doesnt have this function and due to her hatefull disgusting personality it wouldnt even work. During the trip you worry about what happens to them because the relationship they have been building is as comforting as it is unique in that ruthless world, it fills your heart, Joel as a relentless but loving father on the inside, Ellie with her joy for live. Well, the series doesn't connect, it feels dead, you never get to feel close to the characters, they don't show mutual affection, it's not a two-way relationship, she's not a broken sensible girl under a happy actitude and she doesn't do anything for him. version without substance. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came to the realization that this TV show is really not meant for hardcore fans of the game. It's nearly impossible to watch without harkening back to its predecessor. Great cinematography and set design make for a visually compelling experience. However, there are several aspects that I did not agree with. First of all, the casting. Pedro Pascal looks the part, but his character is a shell of the video game Joel. No charisma or intensity. Bella Ramsey is not a bad actress. Her effort in bringing Ellie to life is obvious. However, I believe she failed at this, though. Her cadence when delivering lines doesn't hold a candle to Ashley Johnson. Furthermore, the TV show is poorly paced (should have been 2 seasons), ignores the Bill/Ellie potential, miscast Melanie Lynskey, and just doesn't have much action. Its a snoozefest with most of the great dialogue either poorly delivered or just flat out missing from the TV show. Expand

Expand

It didn't start out badly, series one, two and then came series three. I can't understand why a post-apocalypse film would introduce gays? Is it so important against the backdrop of a dying civilisation or is it the political introduction of population reduction through same-sex relationships that lead to demographic decline?! That's what I don't understand. And for that Agenda alone I give this one a 1.

It fell flat for me and took me out of the story usually. I didn't think episode 8 warrants an Emmy for her, but I do think Pedro deserves one. I didn't mind the two, full gay episodes, but they did not move the needle on the story. 3 was a great, dystopian romance story and I liked both characters/actors. I was a bit mispy at the end, but again, Bill meets Ellie in the game, and I think we missed out on that interaction. As for Ellie's origin, I just thought it was dumb. I don't think Storm Reid has the acting chops to pull of any nuance, but then again, the writing didn't give her much. I realize this is DLC and everyone wanted to see a lesbian love story, but it was silly to leave safety to go play video games in a mall. What person, growing up in a zombie apocalypse, does something so stupid? And finally, the Fireflies. I don't get them. In both the game (from my kids) and the show, there's no real sense of who they were fighting. Fedra is the government I guess and that's bad? But nobody other than Fedra took quarantine seriously enough to stop the spread of the virus/fungus. Ironic that the demographic that still wears masks and doesn't believe in the lab leak would be against a government agency trying to stop a pandemic. The Fireflies were a big nothing burger and that hurts the story. Give us something to love about them and hate about Fedra. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first two episodes and some others as well were promising but when completing all 9 episodes it's a huge frustration.

The creators managed to maintain the atmosphere of the game, good effects, and decorations, the acting is also decent. But... that's all.

IMO this show has two main flaws where one leads to another: Action. I understand that it's hard to maintain the same level of action scenes as in the game but by the end of the show I forgot when was the last time I saw the infected. There was one single Bloater emerging underground when you kill several in the game. Honestly, I was expecting at least one fight with this monster. A couple of clickers were killed in the beginning plus a bunch of scenes with one-two infected attacking the character. That's it.
Also, not so many shootouts with regular people/raiders. This leads to the main flaw which turned this into a **** show.

When playing the game, you are building chemistry with Ellie through constant interactions. You carry her over the water, lifting, waiting when she opens the door or throws a ladder, etc. You protect her when she is under attack, you kill A LOT of people throughout the game. In the end, when killing Fireflies, it does not feel THAT bad. Still extremely questionable but due to the 20 hours of experience of helping/talking/protecting, you feel it can be deemed as a rightful choice.

However, the TV show failed to build the crucial part of the Last of Us - the chemistry between Joel and Ellie. They tried to show the bond between them but only close to the end, and for me, it did not work. Eventually, without this buildup all actions taken by Joel look like a horrific psycho massacre. He killed a bunch of innocent soldiers, possibly the very last neurosurgeon on the planet, the rebel leader, he lies to the girl and catches her in some psycho-abusive Father-Daughter relationship...
Again, it's in the game as well. But it does not feel like in the TV show due to the proper buildup of the ending.

And in TV-show, they had plenty of possibilities to give the ending a proper buildup. I mean they lost 1 hour, the whole episode just to cover the story of two guys falling in love. I'm OK with all that woke stuff but the Last of Us is about different things and different characters. The creators missed this part and the whole show became **** What a joke...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why do people complain about The last of us. Simple modern television has become pretty cookie cutter it tells a story with love, but people look to love and love by its definition has become very fresh with gay love becoming a staple to satisfy youth and the media. Now my opinion is the last of us hits the nail on the head and satisfies the June 14, 2013 game release. Pedro Pascal nails a new version of Joel flat at times and Bella Ramsey is elegant. I think some of the show's minor issues are the fact that it feels like it needs to soar to a place instead of let it sit, and in some moments it does that, but near the end of the show in its final episode setting up that sequence of the game we see Joel mindlessly shoot through an entire hospital the change being they all die. In the game Joel runs out of the hospital with a knocked out Ellie as he is chased by the fireflies this time he just walks like The Winter Solider and slaughters them all. I feel like this scene could've worked with a bit more time in just the whole episode it could've been only 54 minutes, and I would've enjoyed it either way. Bella Ramsey was hated the moment they saw her face, and I never doubted for a second that someone who looks different than a video adaptation could play almost the same character as played masterfully by Ashley Johnson. The Last Of Us suffers from a short run time ending which sinks a bit of my enjoyment, but its amazing supporting and lead cast satisfy the need for judgment. 8.3/10 is what I give this show and I find the wait for part II's adaptation all the more exciting Expand

Good, but not great interpretation of the source material.

On the upside, it sticks pretty close to the source material and focuses mainly on Joel and Ellie's realtionship.

On the downside, there are a lot of minor flaws that hamper the overall impact of the show. None is huge in itself, but together, they do deduct from the overall experience. If I'd point our one thing, is that the 9 episodes (and only really 6) weren't quite enough to flesh out Elli and Joel's relationship. It needed a tighter script to really make it work. The game has you spend roughly 20 hours together, while the show barely makes it 5.

Yes, at the beginning I had some complaints about the casting, but over time you get used to these actors, and it's an adaptation, not a casting. The series tells some moments in different ways, sometimes in favor, sometimes not, but it's not bad, on the contrary, it makes it more interesting. All the episodes (except the third one) are just great, I watched them in one breath. And as for the third episode...., well, it happens, the main thing is that it didn't hurt the other episodes of the series. In my opinion, this is the best adaptation of not only the game, but also the best adaptation of all adaptations of books, games, and other things. I recommend it to fans of the game of the same name, and those who have never heard of the game will like it even more.

I'm a big fan of the Last of Us games, I've played Part I, Left Behind and Part II. In my opinion, these belong to the best stories ever told in video games, next to Life Is Strange and God of War. The adaption is very faithful, it follows the games in a good way and tells a few side stories apart from the games. They changed the whole story of Frank and Bill, but the core stays the same, and I'm pretty sure, it fits better in a TV-format this way. The CGI and practical effects are extraordinary, and they are looking great. The production value is just astounding. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are amazing as well. I liked them already in Game of Thrones, but this… Wow. My only problem with the show is the pacing. The most dialogues are very well written, but they are just too long. There are a action sequences, but a few more would have been great. I think the amount of infected was kinda small, and I hope they change this in Season 2. But overall this was one of the greatest video game adaption I've ever seen, next to the Cuphead Show and Cyberpunk Edgerunners. I'm looking forward to Season 2. Expand

If anything it was an extended trailer for the video game. A playthru of the video game is much better viewing by the way. This series could easily have been very successful by coming up with an alternative plot. I suspect that hiring the game designers as the writers was a mistake - the material needed a fresh approach. So I think in summary that is where this series came unstuck - it would be too much like hard work doing a good job and a lot easier to just produce a few low cost promos to boost video game sales, strung together posing as a tv series. This show is a f*ckin masterpiece. Period.

And trust me when I say that I rarely use the term "masterpiece" so as to maintain its significance.

To some, this may seem a bit boring and excessive at times but that would only be the case for those, who expect nothing more from a horror show except for action, zombies, shooting and things like that.
Yes, if you are expecting continuous intense action sequences, savage moments, cold blooded dialogues and things like that, I am sorry to say that this show is not for you and you are bound to be disappointed with it.

Now that we have cleared the negative immature audience out of the scenario, let's talk about the actual show and how perfect it really is.

To me, this show is a love story, the love story of two best friends, the love story of a father and a daughter, the love story of humans with themselves.
But also, at the same time, to me, this show is an eye-opener too. It acknowledges the misconceptions, the dark side, the hate, the agony, the real emotions of humanity and the extent of inhumanity people are willing to go to when it comes to themselves. To me, this is a story of ignorance, stupidity, selfishness and demonism.
To me, this is a show about every emotion that humanity has ever experienced and will experience. To me, this show is a story of everything.

So, any other person out there like me, who is willing to take out some time, think about what's really happening, appreciate the depth of the show and is patient enough to enjoy the actual beauty of this show, this show is a f*ckin masterpiece.

Trust me when I say that this is not just a show. This is a once in a lifetime experience, which you'll definitely never forget for the rest of your lives. This show is gonna be engraved in your minds like it has been in mine for more than 7 years.

This show will teach you dozens of things, make you feel emotions you never felt before and clear many misconceptions of yours about how the society really works.
But all this works only if you are patient enough. So, if you've got patience, this is and always will be A F*CKIN MASTERPIECE.

Video game TV shows becoming mainstream expose the creative bankruptcy of today's TV/Movie industry.

"Pointless", is this show described in one word. There is nothing in here that hasn't been done to death a thousand times before. And even the game, to being with, didn't have anything special for a story. Yes it was alright, but it was not at all the profound masterpiece that a lot of people would have you believe. Now translated over to TV this is just boring filler without the fun gameplay of the video game. Worse, it is further distorted and disfigured by the forced addition of woke ideologies and very, very poor casting.

As I said, a TV show about a video game is pointless. Just watch the gameplay if you really feel so compelled to experience the mediocre story.

Its a shame the showrunner lacked the stones to keep the white cast white - is it just to fill a woke diversity quota with the studio?? I like the new cast but it just felt like a weird choice to make. I'm sure if they looked they could've found a decent white cast for those parts. Plot wise I got the vibes from the original games story!! It translates well to the 'real world'. Effects and action wise the budget is high - it's not an easy genre to be original with but so far this has done very well. Will keep watching this closely. *Update got to episode 6, its clear the showrunner has strayed away from the core of the games story and inserted diversity casting where it isn't needed (Joel and brother Spanish American, Tommy's wife black), added disabled character (Henry's brother) is now deaf). I liked pilot and the bill and frank episode but elsewhere it's hard to accept some of the changes. They don't seem to tell a better story just an excuse to serve the current Hollywood narrative. The more I watch this the more I realise how much of the original game was an accidental success.

*In addition to this in last episode the writers have decided to give Joel a health condition he never had, write Ellie to openly emasculate him in front of his brother and a strange old couple (that are also randomly native American!) and also protect Joel with a watch. It's such a mess.

*I've now finished season 1 and it's been a really mixed experience with only a few moments that struck true to the original material for me. More original scenes inserted here with Ellie's mum (and a great cameo from the original Joel and Ellie actors!). The original game felt like it wanted to be a TV show and in that way, without the interactivity, it feels like a project that couldn't really translate the experience of playing the game in this medium. It's a flawed but interesting curiosity to explore for fans of the game.

Don't make Season 2 because NOBODY want's Abby or that usless Stuff from the second Game again. Would be a waste of Time and i would give it 0/10 already after 5 Min's when Abby shows up. They did already enough damage to that Francise with the Game, don't try it again with that disgusting Plot that a 5 Year old wrote for a TV-Show. The second Game was trash, Abby was trash, all her Friends where trash and even Ellie was trash. DON'T DO THAT HBO or ND and let that Stuff where it belongs to: In the Garbage can to rot. For that Show or Season a 6/10 like i said. Without Ep3 and 6 i would be a 8/10 for me. But Episode 3 was so stupid i can't ignore that.
A second Season with Abby and Joels Death would be nothing more then Episode 3 but every Week.

It stayed the same. Week after week Ellie and Joel do **** without meaningul bonding, just going forward on their journey. I'm not going too deep into this. But the show has had good episodes but in the big picture has failed to capture the story. I know what's happening in ep9. And I think it's too early for that. Realistically Joel wouldn't save Ellie. They aren't that close eventhough the show says so. Editing tomorrow.

1st, love the original "The Last of Us", game from ps3. I originally gave it like a 9.5/10 when it came out. I originally gave it like a 9.5/10 when it came out. One of the best stories told and executed that I've seen in a game since Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, on ps2, my previous favorite game. (I was a 90's kid, so I go back to ps1 and ps2 for my fav games, yikes I'm **** old.. ..lol). Thought this show does a whole lot of the original game justice, (mostly). 2nd, let's address "the Pink elephant in the room". The lack of action without Runners, Stalkers and Clickers, not being apart of the danger throughout Joel & Ellie's traversing across the U.S. in the show. This was an early decision that Masion and Druckman clearly made, in hind sight now I see looking back. That IS disappointing. That being said, the writing, acting and production design are remarkably well done. I would say excellent mostly. Pascal Inhabits the soul and body of Joel very, very well. I would even say this interpretation and version of Joel, while at first glance may seem tame or soft, is actually far far- more haunted, disturbed and therefore compelling. I learned along time ago that when you write/create a story you want to tell, that the story is never in service of the characters, but that the characters are there to always serve the story. Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, I'll admit initially, she didn't look like her and I thought she was too angry and overly reaching with her aggression early on in the show, even though I know she had serious trust issues since everyone dies or abandons her, I get it.. But then I watched Episode 5.. The end of that..Oooof. Hold'n back some man fuk'n tears there with Henry and Sam.. btw those two actors..Perfect performances as brothers. Chef's kiss*. Extremely powerful. And I saw what Bella did acting-wise in that episode and I was like, "Yep she's earned my respect now with that acting!" The writing is top notch. Places re created were shot on real locations for a lot of the show. Of course the composer from the games came and was hired on for the music for the show as well, which was great. I'll stop here, but like I said, this I felt might be the best adapted show from a game to date. And let's face it, HBO always brings that HBO quality, even if you disagree with some of the decisions they made. For me, I am very Impressed and mostly pleased minus the lack of clickers - I'm only grading this show based on what they put into the adaptation, not what was left out. So for that reason it is a 9/10. Expand

Than again the last episode is going to be 44 mins . So pretty much without opening and end credits and behind the show it's is a 40 min episode. Oh boy it's going to be a rush final episode. I'm coming this as a fan of the video game so I was very worried to see how would HBO would do . So episode 1-3 good / great episode. When it came to episode 4-7 . The quality started to drop and it is fine for at least two is just alright. But four of 9 episode show come that is not good . Episode one started good . episode Two great. Episode 3 fantastic. There good amount of people who hated Bill and Frank episode even if you did play the game there where in love . So it can be someone some of us forgot in the game. The part with Henry and Sam could have been one large episode. The meeting Tommy and Left behind needed to been alot better. And the whole part of David was disappointed. So we can have two episodes of Kathleen but only one for David? That needed to be a two episodes . If was just reviewing that episode as a non gamer it was fine . But I'm reviewing this as a fan of the game. Expand

In episode 8 the producers were proud that Joel didn’t make it to the restaurant to kill the enemy. They were proud Ellie was able to kill him by herself. They really complete the circle of wokism here: diversity hires, white people are bad/problematic, religious people are cultist/evil, black people always seem to have a justified/good intent, gay focus in nearly 2 episodes, Ellie’s actor is non binary, Joel is stretched to Latino descent actor and he’s portrayed as more weak/angry. I’m Chinese and I’m sick of the identity politics. This is why I give it a 2 to lower the rating. People need to lash out against the wokism in entertainment that is being used to push an agenda. Entertainment should be based on the merits of the story. Expand

Joel is supposed to be a tough powerhouse of a man, but the show depicts him as a vulnerable sissy who can't throw a punch. They completely rewrite Joel's character which completely puts off the tone of the show. Not terrible, not great. That was just mediocre. It shows how the gameplay was important in the original The Last of Us. Not looking forward to watching the second season

Good start but a lot of over acting and incredibly pointless dialogue. It’s sad that I’m not looking forward to the final episode. I really wanted to like this show too

I think it's terrible that an action, adventure, survival, horror game has been turned into a pure drama series. Action/Adventure 1/10 Horror 0/10 Survival 1/10

Some scenes show Eli as a sadistic character
Some parts are completely vulgar

It’s a very well made show, and a lot of love was clearly put into making it, but there is a big difference between inclusion, and an agenda. And boy oh boy is an agenda shoved right in your face. Those who played the game will especially see this

Druckmann seriously got his balls cut off and destroyed the good story that was TLOU1. Did Anita Sarkesian write you a letter this time around too?
I dont even dare buying the remake of TLOU on PS5 either. Pretty sure he crammed in some gay fisting scenes in there all together with a pride parade. Screw this s**t
Naughty Dog seriously has fallen weak.

This series is hands down the best video game adaptation ever, by a long shot. And ep.7 was another banger, basically following the game scene by scene.
It's a shame people are review bombing ep.3 and ep.7 because of their personal problems.

Anyway, my point i that I knew almost nothing about this, and I was expecting some kind of Walking Dead tv show. But I am really liking this. Love the characters, love the world, and I don't know where the show is going but I want to keep watching. More episodes now, please, thank you :3 Expand

She is just annoying troubled kid. Nobody teaches her manners. Joel is sentimental and simply does whatever others tell him to do so, even Ellie. He is shown soft in dialogues. None of characters are good and interesting role models. Also there is no character development, despite a lot of factors. Characters behave the same except maybe Joel turning into cry-baby.
I think some "modern audiences" will love this show because of fact it is so woke but no one really enjoys.
Additionally 3rd episode is a gay romance. Everyone loves that. Right?
To conclude: Rating 3 is only for visuals and atmosphere from original game. Anything else is a trash. I stopped in the middle of 7th episode. Don't waste your time if it is valuable for you.

Good so far, well acting and a gorgeous scenery. They changed a few things compared to the game, mostly less interacting with the zombies (probably has to be done, because another obstacle every 5 minutes works for a game but not a TV show) and expanded the stories for a few side characters. Although I have to agree the series is much slower than anticipated and to cover the side stories to such a great extent was also a suprise. In parts a bit too boring, but writers choice is understandable. But the tone is always right, it manages to catch good and obvious bad events that can happen in a apocalypse.
However, what really is funny are the reviewers on this side giving the show a zero rating because they don't know that there are gay characters in this show. I mean, they claim to have played the game, and these characters are gay there too. It really is interesting to see how many people don't know the basic story of the game or are just that unobservant while playing. Nothing could be funnier than seeing these people complain about woke agenda and wrongfully claiming these characters are straight in-game. FYI, the first part has a DLC, try to play it. And yes, it was more subtle in the game, but regarding sex and blood HBO has not the reputation to be subtle. And complaining about the ethnicity of a character when this just doesn't matter for its storyline, this is also ludricous, especially when it reflects modern society better this way. You should give this show a try. Knowing the story of the game hasn't ruined it for me, although it is very predictable because of it. When you like the show, it is also probably worth it to try out the game, since its tone and story development is quite different, but both products do it well enough.

It was a good mix of adventure, on the road feeling, a desolate future, and human nature. The same reason why the Walking dead in it's prime was excelent - it was never about the zombies, infected or whatever made our species near extinct, but rather the stories of people - what would you do when the logic of our world changes.

Last of us, the film, started out superbly. But the feeling I really enjoyed in the game really evaporated as it went on.

So maybe my review is affected greatly by this nostalgia I was looking for.
Anyway, here are my observations.

The good:
- atmosphere
- the looks
- Joel's character

The bad:
- The filler stories (ep 3 & 7)
- Elli's character - it's okay if she looks different than the game Ellie. But her character is something else too. She's an angry foulspeaking teenager now, with a psychopatic streak in her personality. It started out bad, but getting a bit better. - The - flow - You have atmospheric episodes, then action, a cliffhanger, then you get an episode that gives nothing to the story. Like many said the flashbacks consume a lot of the show's time for little benefit. It's nice to see character buildup but it can be done with less time. It breaks the flow of the show completely.
- how you treat your audience - when you receive criticism, you blame your audience. Have you ever for once considered, that not everyone is a homophobic trash who did not like episode 3 and 7? Yes, I understand the two what have in common is lgbt romance. Also, aside that, they are also common in their style of storytelling: out of the flow episodes which add little to the whole. The game handled this issue very subtly, because that was not the point of the story.

Yet again, another series promising to deliver thrills and excitement and instead hammers you over the head with its woke credentials. There are not many zombies around, and when they do appear they are an afterthought, like a confusing garnish. The logic of how they function is not explored at all.

After a passable first two episodes, the series plummets into embarrassing, maudlin, and simplistic stories in a hilariously woke post-apocalyptic world. The two excellent actors who play the leads are miscast, and directed in such a way that completely sucks the energy out of every scene. Overall, just boring and annoying. For way better zombie apocalypse thrills, head over to the early seasons of The Walking Dead.
