Overall, I think the first episode is okay. There are some humorous parts but I felt as though the cast was trying to make me laugh in places where it felt out of place. Throughout the majority of the first episode, I thought it was kind of drawn out and depressing. There wasn't much comedy in a show that used to make me laugh. I'm referring of course to Roseanne, the show it's based off of. I do feel as though they tried hard to pull at the heart strings by saying Roseanne had died, but it was almost a tongue and cheek move towards the audience and Roseanne Barr herself, whether you side with her or not. I'm hopeful that they can change the feeling this show gives off, but at the moment I'm not too impressed. Expand

The first episode is pretty bad. I didn't watch 'Roseanne' so I couldn't tell you if it's better or worse, but there was one funny line in the episode. I'm not sure if this was how 'Roseanne' was too, but the humor seemed like it was drawn from a humor 101 book, where the punchline was fairly telegraphed. I could appreciate the serious topic of the show (which I won't ruin), but thereThe first episode is pretty bad. I could appreciate the serious topic of the show (which I won't ruin), but there were moments that made me think this show might work better as a drama. Lots of people talk about the stellar acting skills of Goodman and Metcalf. I don't think they were on display in this episode, but I think it's possible this first episode being about putting 'granny rose' into the history books, was a necessary inevitably forced premise, and that things might get better starting with episode 2. I'm going to stick around for at least another episode or two to see where this goes. I am admittedly coming for the humor, and not finding much thus far. But you gotta give a show more than one episode. Expand

I'm trying so hard to like this show, but I'm really struggling with it. The punchy humor just isn't there, and what is there seems forced. It's just not the same. Before, I would never miss an episode of Roseanne. I've even watched the old reruns, some of them 10 times or more and they're still hilarious, and with The Conners, I could care less if I missed an episode or not. Not very impressed.

The result is a very interesting little sitcom, where what’s happening backstage reflects what’s happening on camera. It’s mostly about loss; for Dan, Darlene, and Jackie, it’s become about the redefinition of their roles in the Conner family. The setting snaps so familiarly into place that it’s like a time capsule.

The lovingly biting tone of the working-class comedy remains much the same. [29 Oct - 11 Nov 2018, p.11]

None of them has ever carried a series before, and as good as they were in The Conners debut, the glue that held the show together was the unseen ghost of Roseanne, as aggravating and amusing as ever, invisible but never absent. I'll believe she's replaceable when I see it.
