The laughs are waning by the halfway point, so it’s a relief when the class acts Adam Scott and Bradley Whitford show up later (albeit in small roles) to help steady the ship.

For better or worse, Val is no longer the subject of ritualistic humiliation, which leaves the final season feeling less sadistic but also less sharp.

This return is essentially devoid of humour. Our protagonist is no longer monstrous, the satire is toothless and the majority of Cherish’s interactions are exercises in trite sentimentality.
