Season 1 Review: With Jeter on alert for giving away too much, the series sometimes struggles to find much more to say about him than what we already know. But that reluctance is also what makes the moments when he cracks, even just a little, far more revealing. When Jeter allows himself to be a little petty, or smug, or a sorer loser than his carefully gracious post-match interviews would betray, “The Captain” becomes that much more compelling, despite its subject’s best efforts. Season 1 Review: Maybe if you bleed pinstripes, a journey through the Yankees dynasty with a guide this less-than-forthcoming will still be gratifying. But everybody else is likely to see The Captain as the sort of Yankees-sponsored piece of hero worship that should have played on the YES Network rather than ESPN. Read full review

Full disclosure: I'm a lifelong Yankees fan, and yes, I loved watching scenes of their dynasty years, with all those players who were great in their own right.

But I don't think you have to be a Yankees fan, or even a baseball fan, to enjoy this series, because at the center is a man ofFull disclosure: I'm a lifelong Yankees fan, and yes, I loved watching scenes of their dynasty years, with all those players who were great in their own right.

But I don't think you have to be a Yankees fan, or even a baseball fan, to enjoy this series, because at the center is a man of real character who knows himself and what he values, and relates to others accordingly. Derek Jeter is a hero to people like me for the way he played; he was immensely talented, and never hesitated to put his best into winning, into team play. But the way he was raised by outstanding parents, with wise love and deep integrity, is valuable in its own way. More so, really.

What poise, and honesty, and even a twinkly sense of humor! I highly recommended this series for anyone who wants a portrait of a man who can lead and inspire, not only because of what he does, but because of WHO HE IS.… Expand
