Beautiful cinematography and atmosphere cannot carry this trainwreck of a script.

It has a great deal more to do with philosophy than with science - which would have been great however it involves some of the worst characters i have seen. Without breaking into spoilers - i would state this - the show revolves around scientists who have absolutely no curiosity. They deal with the emotional fall out of their surroundings but no character ever seems to ask "Why did this happen and what can we do about it?" Avoiding spoilers as best i can - 1) Why did no one ever follow up on the first sentient being who was cast away on an island in the worst lack of human compassion i can imagine. A scientist creates sentient life and essentially abandons it and NEVER ONCE checks on it? Leaving it to be a danger to all around including his own son? How insanely cruel. But i guess this came from a character who did not go to his own sons wedding . . .because...?
2) a boy who is lost in time for 20 years is found and i kid you not - 20 seconds later the show has him playing ball - as if NO ONE was interested in how or why this happened? Every single anomaly in this show is the same... "Something breaks every known law of physics, because of Loop, someone suffers moment of questionable human philosophy because of loop, then everyone moves on and asks zero questions. . . because of . . . loop?
3) GOT season 8 drew criticism for characters being taken to their next character arc with no development. Imagine hitting the x20 fast forward button on those characters and you would have created this show. Why does NO ONE ever seem interested in investigating the most life changing, insane event that ever occurred?
4) This show has the worst case of characters not speaking to one another i have ever seen.
5) Junk science. There are some things that are just so disgustingly contrived. Time is frozen - to the point that the earth is not even spinning? This is stable for a period of months? Not one subtle change? Nothing falls from the sky? All the laws of physics are broken entirely except for the characters . . . because of bracelet? So the young teenage woman who is apparently good at reverse engineering things and is apparently "smart" has zero interest in testing anything? Has no fear of unimaginable repercussions? Doesn't even consider checking the fuel source? In fact the characters don't even MENTION their options or limitations?
6) The last episode glosses over a few monumentally profound scientific issues in a total of about 2 minutes. Why was a certain boy lost in time? What happened to a body-missing-young man? Why were robots in the forest attacking small children? Why was the pond frozen and how did the ball return? Well . . . who cares - kick the ball against the garage and lets move on. Oh and your teacher is an immaculate robot - because... science! What the hell was the point of anything?
7) As far as i can tell - the Loop contributes nothing to the world. Mostly it is inflicting pain and misery around it. And no one cares. Life is grim - that's the lesson! But if you feel bad about it - check this out - here are a number of insanely bright lights that we built that can illuminate a few kilometres of field - because . . . science! Don't you feel better now? Lights in a field!!! 8) And the most glaring issue with the show is - . . . . . .
9) Nothing is resolved and don't ever mention it again. Good bye.

This is what happens if you have no ideas and too much money. I stopped caring about the story and the charcters after 20 minutes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Technically excellent, this show has great actors with great direction acting in great settings with great effects, all shot and edited with great equipment by someone with great experience.
The faults, however, show in the writing and they are, unfortunately, fatal.
The narrative seeing casts anomalies as either completely mundane, surrounded by characters completely blindsided by things that have been happening for 30 years and are often admitted to, and often experienced by, children, or shows a battalion of scientists completely uninterested in science or basic safety procedures overseen by a research institute that isn't particularly keen on research. It's hard to take discussions about the philosophy of things such as someone refusing to give you your body back after you've switched seriously, when the characters have only one altercation and do not even try to get help from people who not only understand these anomalies, but most likely made the technology.
One could think this entire town was some sort of government experiment, were it not for the facts that it houses the people doing the experiments and that in a small town with enough PhDs to fill an encyclopedia no one ever seems to bother doing their jobs. The show will often use the anomalous as a one time gimmick and then will have to write around the fact that most people in the town are supposed to be intelligent and experienced with such phenomena, which makes the theme of loneliness rather weak, as it seems closer to deliberate helplessness. The decision to follow children and teenagers as the protagonists, while definitely has potential, here seems like an excuse to have the characters not think about their actions and their implications. Characters, even those that are supposed to be smart and with people above them to whom they report, will often do nonsensical things, especially so since they know the are in a place that violates the rules of their own world. These odd decisions and senseless characters take the wind out of any philosophical questions this show has to offer.
Overall, this series has an excellent setting and an incredible amount of technical talent behind it, all of which is wasted by a weak story.
tl;dr: Visually appealing, but you're better off reading sci-fi stories from the Internet.
