Season 1 Review: Tales from the Loop is that rare sci-fi show: one that trusts us to breathe in deep the oddities of its world, accept that we aren’t going to know everything, and climb aboard anyways. That trust, built with its tactful scene-setting and human-sized troubles, allows for easy investment in deceivingly simple dramas. If the rest of the episodes are as touching, moving, and casually engaging as what I’ve seen from The Loop, Amazon already has one of the year’s sharpest pieces of sci-fi. Read full review

I certainly don’t think it’s a bad show because it doesn’t, but you can feel the show tentatively holding back for fear of scaring you away with sci-fi jargon and technobabble which are frequently used in other anthology shows of this ilk. Season 1 Review: Nobody would accuse Tales from the Loop of being gripping, but it has other qualities, rare in a frenetic era: it is thoughtful, patient, and unafraid to leave its Big Questions open-ended. This is slow television for slow days, and for all the viewers who switch off after 10 minutes worried they are slipping into a coma, there will be others for whom this is a curious joy. Beautiful, poetic, intense... It's one of my favorite shows of the last years. The cast is incredible, and it says so much about life, death, love. WOW, just wow. The ending is heartbreaking

This will be one of those "you either Really Love it or think it is really boring" series. It is inevitable it will be panned as pretentious for those disatisfied i.e. the commonly used word for Masterpieces from cinema artists like Terrence Malick. Personally, this is a MagnificentThis will be one of those "you either Really Love it or think it is really boring" series. It is inevitable it will be panned as pretentious for those disatisfied i.e. the commonly used word for Masterpieces from cinema artists like Terrence Malick. Personally, this is a Magnificent Series. One with a Much Needed Calming Balm of Zen and Comfort during these times where so much is attempting to generate a lot of fear. There are conflicts and occasional raised voices yet ultimately many of the episodes move into Transcendent territory; whether optimistic or uplifting. At this moment I am watching episode 7. Thus far, episode 6 is my Favorite with episodes 2, 4 & 1 also being favorites. A lot of the episodes pay off with Great Final moments; though episode 3 and 5 were much softer endings. I have laughed some during these episodes, as well. Genteel, expansive, subtle threads of interconnective continuity and lots of Intrigue have me fully invested in this Marvelous Gift during the restless year of quarantine. Keeping company with characters, musical scoring and cinematography like this is what we need more of right now. If u don't enjoy slow gorgeous storytelling...this is not for you. If you enjoying indulging on chocolate or art u love with slow fully appreciative wonder...you Will Not regret this viewing decision.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's one hell of a slow burn, but it's a beautifully filmed, thoughtful show. The cinematography is mesmerizing. The production design fits in so nicely with Stålenhag's paintings on which it is based. The acting is uniformly terrific. And the writing is sparse but lovely. That said, I am now on episode 7, and in almost every episode I find myself constantly saying "Who would act like that?" Currently, the boy's friends have just left him on the island (what dickheads) with a supposed monster on it, and all he can muster is a whimpy, "Wait!" once as they take off in the boat? What 14-15 year old isn't gonna be yelling at the top of his lungs, "WHAT THE F*CK GUYS! COME BACK, YOU **** over and over? Ditto the amazing ep where they switch bodies. The son would have told his dad after their fight right there in his room, "We're in each other's bodies! He's me!"
Because... everyone in this town already knows The Loop makes the impossible possible. So if the guy's kid said, "That thing in the wood switched our consciousnesses!" The dad woulda been like, "Right, let's go switch you back." So all these characters who don't say what's going on (obviously to further the plot, I get it) doesn't feel real...since everybody already knows CRAZY **** IS POSSIBLE HERE. I guess I'm at the point where when a character doesn't speak up, when anybody in their right mind would, it starts to just feel like a lazy way to move the plot along. (If you were freaked out because your friend was trying to steal your body, and your life, you'd tell your dad. Because your dad works at the Loop. And his father started it. So nobody would be very surprised by any of this.)
That's my one gripe about Loop. Otherwise, I'm finding it a dreamy dreamscape of interesting ideas and enjoyable mediations on life between birth and death and the dreams we have in between.… Expand

As usual on here, most reviews are extremely (and unfairly) polarising, but the truth is that this show has both the good and bad mentioned by everyone, making it –in my opinion– just average. The bad: extremely lazy writing with baffling unresolved questions and very flawed world building (gorgeous, mysterious and appealing, but frustratingly nonsensical too). In my onion it's a shallow and superficial show, a sort of melancholic "Lost": very intriguing and wants to be poetic, but has no idea where it's going or why.… Expand

this is not a scifi show but merely a romanticized fantasy drama supported by a sad background music and actors bored to death. The plot is stretched to the max with so many fillers and blank stares that it becomes almost the parody of a postmodern painting. Some will certainly enjoy it, not for me.
