I've heard good things about this popular cartoon show about Steven Universe (voiced by Zach Callison), a half-alien boy, and his jewel-themedalien friends, but I haven't had the time to see it. A movie, however, I have time for. For someone jumping in, I was pretty entertained.

This movie does a really good job of setting up the plot and basic characters, the main ones anyway. This film has a robust group of supporting characters from the show, but I didn't feel that they were too much of an issue. I mean, I don't think anyone's opinion of the Popeye movie was really affected by whether or not they knew who Wimpy was.

The STeven Universe movie has a very unique narrative tone, something I've never quite seen before. There are moments where the style of dialoque doesn't quite work for me. (It feels more like the creator's choice than the audience age). But overall, I found this to be a pretty good script. The film like the show from what I understand is really big on acceptance and personal individuality, and it does an excellent job. This is a surprisingly strong character piece for a children's film; the main cast have a lot going on emotionally. The movie's villain Spinel (Sarah Stiles) is well-utilized and developed for a character created specifically for this work without any other setup. She really helps make the movie, and her backstory is movingly tragic.

For a made-for-television budget, this is animated surprisingly well. The whole thing looks so good and colorful with fluid action scenes. I love the opening credits. Again Spinel stands out as she is designed and moves like a '30's cartoon character and fights in a fast, rubbery fashion.

This is also a musical. Like the rest of the elements of film, the songs are also really unique. It helps that all the voice actors have great singing voices.

For a person who doesn't watch SU, I got into this fairly easily and had a surprisingly good time.… Expand

The music, the animations, the delivery was all on point. It's a musical so prepare for that, but not a cringy musical. Every song communicated its point, and was relevant to the plot. -Great animation
-Fantastic voice acting
-Amazing music that you will find yourself relistening to for weeks, possibly months. -The film is surprisingly fairly accessible to newcomers, as they do take some time in the beginning to go over the backstory of these characters. -The action in this film is actually really good. You really feel every attack that the characters take in this.
-The film can actually get pretty dark at times, such as when Steven tries to talk to Spinel right before the song, “Change”. You really feel it when he gets punched here and I was legitimately shocked when I saw blood coming out of his nose after this. -Spinel herself has a pretty depressing yet sympathetic backstory, to the point where’s she probably my favorite Steven Universe antagonist yet. -Steven still has a great relationship with the other gems and I love seeing him hang out with them.
-The film has a pretty good message of how you shouldn’t fixate on what you want things to be like and instead focus on how they are now and how you are going to deal with them. -There are few easter eggs in the film that hardcore fans will surely get a kick out of, such as the Gem’s forms from the original pilot for the series being visible as they are going through all their past forms while regaining their memories.

Cons:
-Amethyst’s design for when she first emerged and when she has amnesia looks a little off, mainly with the braces she has on her arms and legs that are the same color as her skin.
-We don’t get to see much of the other Crystal Gems or the Off Colors here. In fact, I don’t think any of the Off Colors or Crystal Gems outside of Steven, Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, Lapis, Peridot, and Bismuth get a single line in this film. -While I think Steg is a pretty cool fusion, he will inevitably lead to some pretty twisted fan art. -The way Garnet’s amnesia is cured doesn’t make a ton of sense when you think about it and it does kinda feel like it only happened this way because the script says this is where she needs to regain her memories. It’s not a huge deal in the film itself, but it is a bit of a nitpick. -They specifically highlight during one of the songs Greg’s arm getting paralyzed by the poison from the injector drill, but by the end of the film they heal it and it’s like it never happened. Again, not a big deal, but it is something I thought was worth mentioning.

Final verdict: Overall, the Steven Universe movie was pretty fantastic. The animation and music are absolutely spectacular and the film has some very positive messages in it. The film also manages to not alienate newcomers too much which is something most tie in films for TV series fail at doing. I honestly feel this movie should have gotten a theatrical release. A must see for any fans of Steven Universe and a worthwhile watch for fans of animated films with an uplifting, old-school Disney-esque vibe.… Expand

When I first saw the movie ... I was kinda feeling uncomfortable... I mean, this was something I wanted to see and at the same time I was afraid of wasting my time. Though fun, the Steven Universe movie doesn't really offer any new insight to the characters and is more a rehash of what made the series so good. Overall decent effort.

Unfortunately I'm a total sucker for musicals and this provides a great soundtrack. Lots of fun and wrapping up a tv show finale through a film is always fun. Better stoned.

The animation, on the main villain was quite good, you can tell the animators took advantage of a higher budget to have fun with her movement, with the rest looking more or less what we've come to expect from a standard episode. However, if you were unsatisfied with the last season finale and was hoping the movie would flesh out the diamonds, you will still be disappointed. You may also feel like there is little point to the movie as much of it is retreaded familiar ground with regards to character arcs. All in all it's a fun enough romp for the fans of the show, it just doesn't do much in terms of plot or character.… Expand
