It's been nearly 2 decades since I have been able to say that I genuinely liked the direction that Star Trek was going. Strange New Worlds captures the optimism and sophistication that Trek deserves. Everything comes together for a great though imperfect representation that I'm proud to accept as Star Trek.
Pike and Spock carry over the same great chemistry from Discovery without the convoluted and awkward overarching plot. Uhura is delightful and inspiring. The Dialogue is witty and sharp. The cinematography ditches the rapid cuts and excessive lens effects of Discovery and the story lacks the stodgy stuffiness of Picard. The CG could be smoother and a few FX shots were disorienting and inconsistent. Spatial permanence and motion consistency was iffy at times but it was overall forgivable and felt more creative and faithful than recent forays into the world of Trek. The re-imagination of the Enterprise it self is my favorite redesign from the past 30 years. the story was bold and daring. Immediately relevant but not shoehorned. Over all, Good Trek, I'm looking forward to next week.
May the franchise Live long and prosper

The original series was noteworthy for the inclusion of black females, this new series still has males in it, even a white one. Other than that social justice statement very little is similar to the original series. The original series made the cast sit on crappy, plastic school assembly hall chairs, the new series is all nice chairs and acres of glass, just the thing for a combat style ship. The original series had a quasi military hierarchy to match it's quasi military role, the new series dumps that approach for one that could be best described as emotional middles school consensus, so very wake and unrealistic. The dialogue in the original series might be described as, common, semi-formal, now it's pubescent cool. The original music score may not have been anything to write home about but the new one you would write home about- to say it's not very good.

The actors, well the captain delivers one of the most wooden intro's you are likely to hear (the 5 year mission speech). The doctor, a mere faint shadow of McCoy and the nurse, well has the doctor's role and virtually no chest, a recurring mis-targeting of what the original series was. Gone are the days of attractive women with big **** in short skirts and in with women who, well, you wouldn't look at twice (with the exception of Spock's mate).

Put another way, it's out with a target audience of young adult males 17-25 and with kids

Season 2 starts off with girl boss domination - and no one is buying it. Leave this show to the sexual virtue signalling writers and sycophants.. men, the actual audience who wrote and made this franchise what it is.. are done with it.

Gene Roddenberry’s wonderful legacy was created to champion exactly the opposite: an ideal. His vision of a mankind that finally conquers all distinctions and sets out to explore the universe was deeply meaningful to millions of people across planet Earth. A such, “Star Trek” helped shape the character of many young men and women. Roddenberry dreamed of a noble humanity that we can aspire to. It can even be seen as a guide to proper behavior in the face of adversity as well as an attempt to imagine what incredible ends we can achieve if we can only get past our own selfish and petty grievances. In a nation of people who have lost their identity; in a generation that would rather reject math, science and reality, and at a time when freedom of speech is under attack: replaced by a spineless need to serve as the voice of a political machine, “Star Trek” has been sacrificed. Its message has been completely lost, as it now serves only to trumpet an inhuman perception; one that claims that mankind is irrevocably monstrous. “Strange New Worlds” takes the heroes of a generation and disfigures them, completely ignoring their written past and their achievements. It then proceeds to warp the entire Roddenberry universe to the ends of Woke politics. In this distorted and now tainted presentation: men are corrupt and incredibly short sighted, women are perfect and flawless, and the only way to create balance is thru imbalance. It is a deeply racist and sexist agenda, which pervades every aspect of its product. Helmed by a man who has made it clear he has no love or understanding of the Star Trek universe (and said so even before beginning work on the IP), Alex Kurtzman has sold his soul. He has betrayed his own race, gender and nation by selling Woke ideology to the vulnerable masses. His complete lack of insight, consideration and depth mars his every enterprise, decidedly creating havoc in an industry that was meant to be artistic and has instead turned capitalistic. “Strange New Worlds” is a facsimile of “Star Trek”. One with no spirit and one that pays absolutely no respect its roots or identity. I cannot recommend such a bastardization of a beloved franchise and it is my hope that this explanation will help society grasp why Trekkies are enraged, disturbed and distressed by what the intellectual property has become. Roddenberry is, quite literally, turning in his grave. Expand

I am not the hardest fan, but it is safe to say that I know one or two things about the Star Trek universe. And I like that they return to the original formula. An optimistic, non-capitalistic, and United Planets take on our future. As we can see, those unfamiliar with Star Trek have trouble understanding that concept -- because it is so different from everything sci-fi and fantasy out there. For those, the cheap and generic Star Trek films of the past years are probably the better content. But I hope that Strange New Worlds is the beginning of a revival of the original episodic adventure formula of the 1960s and 1980s, but also the 1990s and early 2000s before JJ Abrams appeared, who seemed to have never understood what the creator of Star Trek was talking about -- for decades. Gone is the grim-dark fascination of the newer Star Treks; this is a return to form where Starfleet and the Federation represent an idealized future for humanity, where optimism, curiosity, and personal betterment are the driving factors in the plots and character arcs. It’s less about the action and the adrenaline and more about careful, thought-provoking questions.

Anson Mount as Captain Pike is a joy to watch. He’s got the oozing charisma and laidback charm of Commander Riker, the careful diplomacy and thoughtfulness of Captain Picard, and the bravado of Captain Kirk. I’ve enjoyed several of the other characters as well: Dr. M’Benga may be one of my favorite Star Trek doctors yet, Nurse Chapel’s bolder, stronger personality is a slightly bizarre but entertaining addition to the show, and I think Number One shows a lot of potential as a really interesting character.

That’s not to say that the show doesn’t have its lumps. I find Lieutenant Noonien Singh quite irritating; her overly serious “I’m a soldier” mentality comes off less like Worf and more like Malcom Reid. Ethan Peck’s portrayal of Spock, while objectively fine, somehow feels off. SNW also shares another common frustration with more traditional Star Treks: attempts to explain the science are riddled with errors and implausibilities that make it hard to suspend one’s disbelief. As usual, the stories of Star Trek are at their best when the scientific principles at play are best left unstated.

Overall, though, this is a thoroughly enjoyable show. If we keep with another Star Trek tradition of the first season being the worst, then this will easily be the best Star Trek show we've had since TNG ended.

Originally guesting on the once excellent (now ruined) Star Trek Discovery, the bulk of the cast were fun and refreshing yet here, where they are shoehorned into a 60’s retro revisit, they come off as a lackluster and fake list of cartoon heroes who gave been built for kids.
They have to their credit brought life to an array of original characters many of whom we have not seen for years (sans Janice Rand) but this is all a wasted opportunity. Forcing left-leaning ideals at every turn, each episode races at light speed from start to finish without the audience ever forming any genuine connection to the characters. Theres a constant reinforcement that ‘that they are the best in Starfleet’ yet the lower ranks engage in disagreements with their superiors at every turn as though they are actually equals, whilst swanning about the decks with their long hair and free spirits.
Its all droll and try-hard.
Great special effects do not alone make this a great spectacle as it has been almost strategically sterilised with political correctness and covered in layers of what is fashionable rather than built up with real substance to be of any serious value. Six episodes in and I cannot do it anymore. You may well have just gone too woke, which will cause this series to go, well, broke.

To the people posting 0 or red reviews, you all sound like you didn't watch any of this but the first 5 minutes of episode 1. This is nothing like DSC and PIC, nor is it a carbon copy of TOS. Sorry to the current people that work on the Star Trek shows, but almost all episodes are poorly written. Great visuals and production values. 2023 addition: I like the actors, like the visuals, like the setup, but yet I couldn't place why I don't like the show... until today. It's shallow, flat, no development. In older Trek shows, the problems were met by the crew, interconnected with their personal issues, but shared and felt by the majority of the cast, where the captain takes the leading role in almost everything.

Here the crew stories are self-contained. One or two of them solve the issue, the rest orbit around, if present at all. The side plots also involve one or two, and the two lines barely interact. Shallow. That's what was bothering me.

The first episode (which is brought to us by the people behind the failed CBS Treks) is much much more heavy handed than I would have liked, but overall a decent enough start. Episode 2 is where it really starts to feel like the kind of Star Trek I've been waiting for. Critically the characters really shine on the whole. Chapel is probably the only character I dislike from what's out so far. Its impressive how good the characterization is in 2 episodes compared to multiple seasons of Discovery and Picard especially since we're supposed to already really "get" who Picard is from 7 seasons of TNG. Pike is wonderful as are Number 1, Uhura and Spock (mostly). Overall I just wish this was the show we got instead of discovery years ago, and it is unfortunate that that show's continuity plays into this one (albeit in minor ways). I hope that it is successful and the people at CBS take that success as reason to move away from the Kurtzman style of Trek. Expand

Some of the acting is not well done. The main character Pike is incredibly boring and not fleshed out. Yes I know his entire backstory. It's not fleshed out here or elsewhere. We are supposed to give him a huge amount of credit for all the epic things he must've done to get to where he is as a leader in the Federation. However we've barely ever seen him actually do anything before this show. His acting style is "lol that's ok, I'm chill." That could work on a comedy star trek like lower decks, but this is not a comedy. He acts like he's on a family comedy show on abc family with a live studio audience. Some of the other characters are good some of the time, but several are one note and boring. Much of the acting is monotone and done with flat affect. Compare that to the extremely expressive face of Michael Burnham from Discovery. The stories have been half ok and half boring with giant plot holes and unexplained key plot features in almost every episode. This show is not for people who care about science fiction and star trek, but seemingly for people who want to check out mentally and casually consume a star trek type of show. My friend and I love star trek discovery because of the acting, the character building, the fascinating stories, and the incredible visuals. We have been incredibly bored while watching every episode of this show so far.
We just finished episode 8. If they make a great comeback this season I will edit the review. Discovery went hard with huge stakes, war, life and death, and sheer peril being dealt with in almost every episode. This show has been an absolute snorefest.

I can't imagine that the people who are dissing NuTrek because it is "Woke" have ever seen old Trek shows. Hell, the first pilot (with Cpt. Pike) was turned down by NBC. Not in the last place because a woman as Number One was unthinkable. How can a woman be in such high and influential position? TOS also had an African woman on the bridge and a Russian helmsman; in the sixties!!

But yeah, I guess nothing really changed the last 60 years. But instead of NBC executives, the "critics" are now adolescent boys still living with their mom because they have no clue what it means to be a real man.

They take the best things from all of the previous series, add in engaging characters, and the freedom of the episodic stories to go wherever it wants to, and you get an interesting, meaningful, and also just plain fun, new ST show. I like Discovery, but I already care more about almost every character we've seen here in SNW than I do in Discovery. Discovery's friendships and "chemistry" feel forced and awkward compared to this cast and these characters. This show's relationships and storylines feel more naturally developed (aside from Spock and a certain other crewmember's flirtations, that is).

As usual, though, we have the incel brigade with their misogyny and hatred of anything that isn't trying to promote toxic masculinity, poison the comments section of every new show that doesn't focus on the strong white male rescuing some weak, sexy woman. So, just ignore those reviews and enjoy the latest, and possibly greatest, new Star Trek series!

This series really captures the essence of Star Trek. The characters, stories, dialogue are very fresh and engaging.

Some of the other recent Star Trek series seem to wander off or drag out story lines and characters. The other series characters and plots can become absurd with the exception of Picard.

The other recent Star Trek series, at times, become a chore to watch instead of feeling compelled to watch. Strange New Worlds is simply compelling. From the captain to the surrounding characters, there's real tension, real depth. Picard still has good moments and some nice flash backs to TNG.

I highly recommend Strange New Worlds both to Star Trek fans and even just drama fans.

However, my problem is that I'm getting standard Star Trek fatigue. Many things are different Capt Pike instd of Capt Kirk, but much is the same Star Trek crapitus from the very beginning, especially the all the Federation rules/regs, how Federation values seem to always trump other cultures, and the hero-captain goes on dangerous away missions which is strategically stupid. It just makes for the same stories and outcomes, only the characters/settings are different. Technically speaking, the series is very good with great VFX and production values. However, they're still weaving in woke nonsense because they're obviously being paid to do so. Ep 7 was all about the lgbtq with its "hot" guest star. Ep 8 threw seriousness out the window with their 18th century dress-up parody where Capt Pike played against type as a gay fop. Ep 9 was the writers proclaiming "let's do an 'Alien' thing!" The season finale was a what-if ep so take it with a grain of salt. Season one is like a report card your kid gets when he's 8, good enough, passes, but doesn't meet potential, there's greatness there, but something's holding it back. It's like there's a few writers that "get it" but there's others that pull it in weird, nonsensical directions. Maybe in a year or so season two'll be better, but when recently has that been the case?! Expand

Great actors, great visuals, the first two episodes are hands down the best Star Trek I've ever seen, excepting possibly "The voyage home"... and then the writing and direction dives off a cliff hard, while the other qualities remain. Situations in the following episodes are physically inconsistent - we see a video feed from a remote outpost under attack that the Enterprise can't spot, cut to the ship hanging right above the outpost, the outpost gets destroyed, and the same video feed still plays. It's jarring, completely unnecessary, would have been trivial to fix, and every single episode contains multiple such blunders.

Characters are paraded around as if moved by overly ambitious writers who have never heard of "show, don't tell", behave irrationally and inconsistently with positions they've argued just before, and more like extras who wandered onto set instead of trained officers. Occasionally, the Enterprise feels like a shuttle with a crew of 16, who get to save the universe in every single episode, from scratch. It's disturbing to see first real greatness and then watch that potential wasted so unnecessarily. I'll watch the next season to see where it goes, but, man, did this leave me disappointed.

Season 2

Absolutely delighted that this stellar show has maintained its superbly high-quality production values, acting and storylines. The show remains inclusive and adaptable while avoiding preachiness or judgementalism. The threads of early Starfleet conflicts remain a prominent theme across this season, depicted in much greater depth and richness. The character development and acting continue to shine - this is a crew I can absolutely relate to and want to get to know better. The humorous moments laugh out loud while the emotional moments avoid melodrama and superfluousness. This time round it seems episodes go more in-depth into each character's original motivations and exorcise old demons that haunt them from the past. Some episodes were quite sad, of love lost in another time and universe, of unfulfilled potential. Could old hatred, and self-hate, be confronted and defeated? Once again happy to see the present Toronto depicted so charmingly. The sensitive nuanced portrayal of the terrible actual trauma of war was really amazing. All too often first-world problems are characterized as trauma, but those who have really gone through the horrors of war know what it is. Kudos to the showrunners for highlighting the terrible subject. The musical episode was a real delight. Each song was meaningful and superbly composed. The lyrics were perfect, amazing how they stitched together a space opera. I found myself strangely angry at the show for the cliffhanger ending in the final episode. The setup was so good it was quite irritating to have to wait a year for the conclusion. Season 1

A different kind of Trek show, the one I have been waiting for during this remarkable renaissance period in the Trekverse. Strange New Worlds is far less frenetic and frenzied than Discovery - there is far more introspection and character development, and far fewer oozy, bubbly moments of feel-good vapid emoting. Pike played by Anson Mount has all Kirk's swagger with Picard's philosophical leanings. He is undoubtedly a new type of captain, and the dark scythe that hangs over his destiny adds depth to his character. His true strength is his insight and instinct, seeing past logic and facts with a well-placed hunch. The rest of the crew is just stellar, Spock, Una, Chapelle, Uhura, etc - all well-developed characters with distinct personalities and nuances. I loved a return to the episodic format of old, each telling a unique story. The penultimate episode was a masterclass in space horror worthy of Alien, and a heart-wrenching forging of character. The season finale was a magnificent send-off, in the grand tradition of all excellent time travel Trek episodes. The consequences of tampering with fate, and the sacrifice for the greater good, are themes explored deeply. It was a delight to see the union of the great captain's Pike and Kirk, with their application of wit, wisdom and vision. Loved the callbacks to the beloved past. Obviously, the cliffhanger finale begs for a second season which we will fully embrace. I have to say this is the most beautiful Trek show I've seen in recent history. The previous shows of this new Renaissance seem rushed and gimmicky, but the vistas in SNW are breathtaking and singular. Extraordinary work - as Eugene Roddenberry rightly stated recently, this show would make his visionary dad proud.

Yes it leaned on tired interpersonal drama to tug it along, and yes it kept resorting to angsty-teen comedic elements that weighed it down, but when it actually decided to focus on its name sake, exploring "strange new worlds," its story telling was okay and it managed to punch above the rest of the mediocre to just plain bad Star Trek that has unfortunately taken over the franchise in recent years. But it can't decide if it is low-rent comedy for angsty-teens who want poorly scripted interpersonal-drama, or a legitimate science fiction drama for adults, and the former seems to be winning out. Season one had a point where it looked like it was going to keep getting better. It was casting off its legacy of being attached, story-wise, to that train-wreck called STD, and it was focusing on good storytelling and intriguing concepts. I was looking forward to season two. But then season two actually arrived and it was like they brought in a whole new writing team that had been ported over from a low-budget WB Christmas special or something. Not to say it doesn't have strong moments, but unfortunately it has become gimmicky, deciding that it wants to focus more on the angsty-teen stuff and the interpersonal drama. And then came the cross-overs with angsty-teen cartoons, and musical episodes that felt like a waste of time and potential -- literally the the lowest possible forms of entertainment that a show can dip into (and usually the stuff that writers don't resort to until 8 seasons into a show that won't die and they have plain run out of ideas for it). We are there in season two...that does not bode well for its future. Honestly, my hopes of Strange New Worlds becoming the quality Star Trek that so many fans have been looking forward to has been greatly diminished. It just isn't there anymore. The fan base has been supplanted by a simpler audience and the quality of the show is catering to that demographic. The chances of that improving are likely zero.

So my review is that SNW is merely okay science fiction that, at this point, has more bad about it than good. It can be interested, it can even be good, but mostly it is just more teen television trying to moonlight as quality entertainment on occasion.

That alone makes it wortwhile watching. However what old actors appear to have and new actors dont are lessons to speak loud and clearly before a camera. The series need a new studio audio recording to become understandable. Furthermore every startrek series comes obviously with tesocial parameters fromthe time they were recorded in. This series are no exemption from this fact. But due to the fact it claims to overdo the original series it sends a message of we know it better then our ancestors. We are the new wisdom in social behaviour and we are the god to know it all. Tha robs the series at least another 3 Stars. Expand

Has been pretty good until Season2 Episode9. A musical was ridiculous for a star trek show!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you watch this show non-critically, sitting on the couch after a long day, it's okay. But if you spend some time actually thinking about the composition and production of the show, it leaves a lot to be desired.

1. The writing often feels unpolished. There are a lot of scenes that have clunky dialogue or could have easily been rewritten to make more sense or to better fit the theme of the episode. There are also a lot of derived scenes that feel like the writers are forcing the plot points at the expense of the characters. The writing feels rushed and more like a first draft.

2. There isn't a lot of polish when it comes to things like folly work. In one episode they are in future Toronto in the center of the city and there is no folly work, no people walking on the sidewalk, no crunch of footsteps, no car noises from the street. Infact, there is no noise at all. The city feels completely empty.

3. There isn't a lot of polish with extras. If you watch, you can clearly see times where the extras miss their timing or their mark and essentially run off screen to get out of the scene in time. I've seen extras who were clearly told to press a button, but couldn't get to the button in time so they just sort of... Don't. It's like they only had time to film each scene once.

4. There are jarring tone changes from scene to scene in some episodes. It's almost like each scene was written (or perhaps directed?) in a vacuum without the context of the scene that will come before or after it. The writing often feels clunky, almost like the writer was given a checklist of things they needed to include in the scene and just wrote it to the rubric. It often feels mechanical and generic or like a campy CW show. We go from serious episode, to lower decks crossover, to a musical that has Spock singing the line, "I thought I was solving for Y, but I'm actually the X" as in "ex" boyfriend. A song lyric I'm pretty sure I wrote in elementary school. In theory, I'm not against a musical episode, but since this series struggles with keeping an even tone it's hard for me as a viewer to know how serious I'm supposed to take everything. Is this episode a campy CW show? Is it a serious sci-fi? Each scene tells me something different.

5. (This is more fan based nit-pick) I find their writing of Spock to be confusing and decidedly not Spock like. It also seems like they have had 2 or 3 episodes where Spock learns to embrace his human side and it feels like they pretty much completely finish his character arc, only for him to be "normal" Spock again in the next episode. In the lower decks crossover episode they even make a big deal of Spock smiling and how strange it is, but then it just ends with Spock basically saying not to worry about it. I don't trust that the writers have an end game with Spock and it feels like they are just throwing stuff at the wall. His relationship with Chapel also seems to only consist of poorly written, cringy fanfic. The scene where chapel has to admit she has feeling for Spock to some incaporial being because the being doesn't know what love is, could have been ripped right out of a teenage girl's notebook.

I want to like this show, and I don't think it's terrible, there are even a few episodes that I think are well done. But it just feels unpolished. I'm unsure who to blame about this. The directors? The show runners? Paramount? The studios' insistence on turning show making into a commodity? All I know is that this show has some good pieces, but just can't seem to put the puzzle together.
